Chapter 9
Two days after Antkit's death and vigil, Redwing gave birth to a beautiful daughter, who shared her mother's red fur and her father's nimble frame. Mousenose named her Robinkit.
Fear and dread loomed over the whole Clan that night. Redwing was a very young queen delivering for her first time. But everything went well, to everyone's surprise and relief.
So well, in fact, that in the night of the next half-moon, Sagepaw would proudly walk back into camp with her mentor, now boasting the name Sagepetal.
Robinkit was hyperactive, which was surprising, since both of parents were calm and levelheaded. With no siblings of her own, she was always seeking out her den mates to play with.
She could never quite grasp why Sootkit was too tired to play most of the time.
The she-kit didn't mind very much, since she could just go to the easily-persuadable Lilykit for company whenever she was bored.
Robinkit's liveliness was a welcome sight for the Clan, and after the grief that preceded her birth, many cats saw her as an omen of healing.
It would be long before healing came.
A few days later, MountainClan departed for the gathering with their heads held high for the first time in moons, confident that things were looking up for them.
When they reached the summit of the mountain, where the gathering took place, Birchclaw immediately broke off from the group. He headed towards where FallsClan was gathered, looking for his friend, Seedheart, who he had been having a debate with over the past few gatherings.
However, as he weaved among the cats, he was surprised to be met with hostile looks. He even got hissed at when he accidentally brushed against an apprentice. And while MountainClan wasn't exactly friendly with FallsClan at the moment, they weren't at odds either.
Seedheart eventually spotted his friend, looking around in desperation, and quickly rushed to his side. Muttering to his Clan that he would "escort him back to his own Clan," he led the cat to a private area to talk.
Birchclaw immediately asked what the problem was. Seedheart, shocked by his pure bewilderment, explained that there had been scents and traces of a MountainClan warrior on FallsClan territory for the past few days. Some scent trails had even reached their camp.
Birchclaw was stunned by the news, and quickly assured his friend that he knew nothing of it, and that MountainClan had no ill intentions towards FallsClan.
Seedheart warily took his word.
As the Clans departed from the gathering place, Birchclaw casually mentioned what the tom had told him. From him, the news spread like wild fire throughout MountainClan, although no one knew who could be trespassing, or why.
The tension didn't end there. From that day on, patrols that met at the border started becoming more hostile towards each other, each Clan accusing the other.
One day, a fight broke out. From there, a cat from each patrol called for reinforcements, turning the brawl into a small battle. Stormstar and Amberstar finally met with each other that day to discuss the situation and hopefully come to a truce.
Stormstar came back to camp that night, immediately called a gathering, and asked outright who had been trespassing into FallsClan territory.
No one ever confessed, but the hostility between the two Clans eventually ended.
Two moons later, Coldwind settled into his nest complaining about a strange pain in his chest. He passed away in his sleep that very night.
The whole Clan grieved heavily for the elder. As they did, Stormstar and Icefeather, Coldwind's son and daughter, sat vigil for a minute and then huddled together in the corner of camp.
After the death of his mate, Pigeonfeather, Coldwind had raised his two newborn kits largely on his own.
The elder would be forever known for fathering a wise and humble leader of MountainClan.
However, his harsh parenting that left his children with intense fear of failure and feelings of inferiority would be largely forgotten.
A moon later, Icefeather and Shadecloud's kits reached 6 moons of age. Jittering with excitement, Palekit was apprenticed to Hailfall, Lilykit to Huskfur, and Pebblekit to Raylight. In the same ceremony, Twigpaw and Petalpaw received their warrior names: Twigtail and Petalstorm.
Sootkit would also become an apprentice in a little less than a moon. If you asked him what had gone on during his days as a kit, he wouldn't be able to think of much. And truly, he hadn't done or noticed very much after the death of his brother.
He usually kept to himself, and slept a lot. Just like Spiderfur.
