What If I Say No? - Happy

Description: When Gemma's adopted daughter meets Happy for the first time at a family dinner, he demands a date.

"I don't like saying I told you so," I said, glaring at my brother as I did the dishes. Ma insisted that the dishes were washed before dinner because they've been sitting in the cupboard for a year and a half while the guys were inside.

"The hell you don't. It's your favorite phrase," Jax said. I smirked a little. Tara had walked out on him while he was inside and he was finally up for joking around about it.

"'M glad you know me so well," I said. He chuckled a little as he played with Abel.

I finished up the dishes as Ma continued to work on dinner across the kitchen from me. I still had to dry them but I could take a short break.

"How's my favorite nephew doing?" I asked.

"I'm your only nephew," he said. I laughed a little cause he was right. Blood relative or not Abel was my only nephew.

"You're still my favorite," I said. "Are we still having movie night tomorrow?"

He nodded excitedly.

"Thank you," Jax said.

"You need a break," I said. "Ma and I did loads of taking care of him. He's a cutie but he can be a handful alone."

Jax nodded a little as his phone rang.

"One day," he muttered as he stood up and handed Abel to me.

"Isn't four a little old to be passed around like a baby?" I asked, laughing at my nephew.

He nodded and I sat him back down at the table so I could get back to work.

A couple hours later, we were all dressed and ready for the first family dinner in nearly two years. Sure, Gemma and I had dinners while the guys were inside but it wasn't the same. Apparently there were some new brothers who were going to be joining us today too.

"Abel, simmer down please," I said softly as he ran into me.

"Aunt (Y/N)," Abel said. "Are you going to marry one of my uncles?"

"I don't know kid," I said, looking to Gemma.

"I bet she does," Gemma said.

"Ma," I groaned, dragging the syllable out a little. I knew she thought that one Happy Lowman and I would make a great couple. This was so much so her thought that she had assigned seats for dinner tonight where I had to buffer between Happy and Tig.

About half an hour before dinner was done, the brothers started arriving. Opie and Lyla came without their kids, which was fair. They needed a break. Jax was here already, as was Clay. Chibs, Tig, and one I didn't recognize all showed up together. Juice was damn near late cause he got stopped by the lovely new Sherif again today.

I wasn't really sure when the rest of the guys showed up because I was being pulled every which way running beers and helping set the table.

"Need any help baby?" Tig asked.

"Now Tigger," I said, turning to him. "I may be wearing shorts and a tank top but it is only cause it's a million degrees."

"(Y/N)," he yelled, pulling me into a hug. "What, how have you been?"

"Good. Got the degree and now I'm back home. I owe Gem and Clay for taking care of me and putting me through school. Start back at the garage tomorrow. Been out on personal leave."

"I've missed your pretty face doll," he said.

"I missed you too Tiggy. We gotta go shot for shot Friday. The year and a half of sobriety might mean I win finally," I said.

"You're on," he said.

I smiled brightly, looking forward to another night of drinking with Tig.

I forced him to help us finish up getting ready and he agreed so I wouldn't kick his ass. Before too long we were able to be seated and start in on dinner.

"I'm (Y/N)," I said, turning to Happy and smiling gently. "Don't seem to recall your face."

"I could say the same thing little girl," he said. His voice was deep and raspy, almost scaring me when he spoke. Still, there was something oddly attractive about it.

"I'm Gemma's daughter, well, adopted," I said. "My mother was a croweater so I was raised around the club. Don't know my father although my best guess is Tigger."

"Hey, I only slept with your mother after she had you," he said.

Happy looked between us like we were crazy. He face didn't change but something in the way he held his eyes did.

I took a bite of some salad as I waited for Happy to say something. He just ate in silence so I turned my attention back to Tig.

"Doll, you got a boyfriend yet?"

"Um no," I said. I glanced at where Jax sat with Abel trying to convince him to eat.

"What those preppy college boys not good enough for ya?" Chibs asked. He was sitting across from me with Juice and Jax on either side.

"As if those pretty boys could handle me," I said. A few of the guys laughed. "But no. Went on a few dates here and there but when I have to walk you home, there's a problem."

"Aye lass. You'll find someone deserving of you and us," he said.

"To be fair, if I'd brought anyone here y'all would've scared the shit out of him," I said.

"So a college degree, no old man, what else is new?" Juice asked.

"Work in the garage with Ma," I said. "And taking care of the cutest nephew." I turned to look at my brother who was very clearly struggling.

"Need help?" I mouthed the question so Abel wouldn't hear. Jax looked exhausted and he nodded. I stood up and walked around the table to Abel's chair.

"What's going on buddy?" I asked softly.

"Not hungry," he said.

"That's a lie. You've been bugging me for dinner for two hours," I said. An exaggeration but he wouldn't notice.

"Not hungry," he said. He was about to have a meltdown.

"Okay, then. You don't have to eat right now, but we're having dinner so you are going to sit at the table and practice your manners," I said. I could feel eyes on me and it was more than just Jax watching us.

"Can I sit with you?"

"You don't want to stay with Daddy?" I asked.

"Miss you," he said.

"Ask Daddy," I said. Abel turned to his father and asked the question and Jax just nodded. Transitioning to being an only father has been hard for him.

I took Abel over to my seat with me and sat back down to eat. Within a few minutes he was sound asleep on my lap.

"Jax the boy sleeping enough?" Clay asked, nudging Jax to look at Abel.

"Transition back home's been rough," he said.

"I'm willing to stay with you for a bit to help out," I said, almost reflexively.

"Yeah, that'd be great," Jax said.

As dinner wrapped up, I was helping Gemma clean up when I felt the same intense stare I'd felt earlier in the night. I glanced over my shoulder and sure enough Happy was standing in the doorway, sipping a beer and staring at me.

"Can I help you?" I asked.

"You're hot," he said, moving towards me.

"Thanks for the obvious observation. You can quit staring at me." I'd cut him off because I'd heard it all before from brothers, hang arounds, and even the college guys.

"I was going to say I'd like to take you out sometime," he said.

"Yeah because when I tried talking to you earlier that went over so well," I snapped. He backed me up to the counter and placed a rough kiss on my lips.

When he pulled away he smirked. "You do know how to be quiet. I'll pick you up tomorrow night."

"Can't I have a date," I said, smiling a little. He turned to me with dark eyes and retraced his steps back over to me.

"Cancel it."

"Can't," I said.

"Cancel the date," he said. He was clearly angry and I was having fun fucking with him.

"I can't," I said. "Besides, it's none of your damn concern if I have a date."

"I don't date. Get that through your thick skull."

"I know that," I said. "Your reputation precedes you Happy."

"Then how come you're not understanding that I want to get to know you little girl," he said.

"You're not used to being told no are you?"

"Cancel the Damn date," he said.

"(Y/N)," Gemma's voice chided me from the doorway. "Quit fucking with him."

I lost it and started laughing. "Sorry Ma."

"What's she talking about little girl?"

I looked up and Happy's dark eyes were darkening more with anger.

"It's with Abel. We have a movie date," I said. He looked slightly more pissed off than usual.

"Tuesday night eight o'clock," he said. "I'll pick you up at VPs house."

"What if I say no?"

Happy was walking away and ignoring me.

"Trust me doll, no one tells him no."

I turned to Tig. "Oh so you think I should date him?"

"You might as well at least get a good fucking out of him. He doesn't ask just anyone out," Tig said.

"God knows the college boys couldn't even find my clit," I said.

"Ain't worth the time in bed then," Tig said. I nodded in agreement and Tig started to help me with doing the dishes yet again.
