Make Em Pay Part 2 - Happy
Before long, Bobby walked in and handed me a bag and a milkshake from Arby's.
"Here's what Happy said to get ya," he said.
"Thank you," I said. "Something about getting shot really drains you."
He chuckled a little as Ava stirred. She didn't wake up though, so I started rocking her bassinet some as I ate a curly fry.
"Bobby, thank you," I said after a second. "For going after them and saving her."
"Of course," he said. "You are family."
"I know, but it means the world to me," I said. "When Happy was a nomad there wasn't really this community, even in the club members in Tacoma."
"That why the nomads disbanded," he said. "Well part of it. The MC lifestyle is all about the community."
"Well, thank you anyways," I said. "From both Happy and I. I know he doesn't talk much, but I could tell he appreciated everything you guys did for us tonight."
"Of course," Bobby said. He seemed to be trying to decide whether to stay or leave.
"You can stay if you want," I said. "The extra hands wouldn't hurt if something comes up with the kids. And the company would be nice."
"Sure," he said, moving the desk chair closer to the bed and sitting down in it. I continued to eat, feeling significantly better.
"I will say," Bobby said after a few seconds of silence. "I've never seen an old lady take a bullet like that."
"I'd rather not do it again," I said.
"It heals pretty well. I took one about the same place."
"Yeah and Tara patched you up not Chibs," I said. "Don't get me wrong here, I'm thankful, but he isn't exactly a surgeon."
"That's fair. He did a pretty good job from the looks of it though," Bobby said.
"Gonna have some nice scars in a few months," I said. Bobby and I spent another five hours talking. It was nearing dawn when Happy returned.
"Why are you still up?" Happy asked as he walked in.
"We were just chatting," I said. "I was waiting for you."
Bobby stood up to leave but Happy stopped him.
"Thanks man," Happy said. Bobby nodded and headed out. Happy walked over and sat down on the bed near me and Ava. He stared at her for a long while.
"Why?" I asked. He looked up at me and I suddenly had tears forming in my eyes again.
"What?" He asked.
"Why'd they do it?"
"Ransom money. They know the club has decent money and figured they'd pay a good deal to get a kid back," he said, staring down at Ava. I nodded as she stirred.
"Bobby fed her a bottle and changed her a couple hours ago," I said.
He nodded as he picked her up. She settled down again.
"Maybe she's like her Momma and she just needs held," he said. I smiled and nodded. He moved so he was sitting up against the headboard on my left side. I curled into his side and his hand found it's way into my hair.
"You just showered, didn't you?" I asked. He chuckled a little.
"Yeah," he said. "Didn't think you wanted me showing up covered in someone else's blood."
"Wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last," I said. He nodded a little.
"Get some sleep baby," he said after a while.
"I'm trying but my body doesn't trust me. I should've woken up sooner," I said. I was on the brink of tears once again.
"And I should've been home baby," he said. "This isn't your fault or mine. The one responsible are no longer an issue."
"I know that baby but I can't wrap my head around it."
He nodded.
"The guys are going to swing by the house this morning and get it cleaned up so we can head home about noon."
"Thanks baby," I said, looking up at him.
Adam started screaming and I jumped up and ran to him.
"Adam," I said softly. "Adam, baby, it's okay."
"Momma, they took her again," he said, sobbing into my the arms the second he was awake.
"No they didn't baby," I said. "She's right over with Daddy. Do you want to come snuggle in the bed with us for a bit?"
He nodded and ran over, climbing up next to Happy.
"Ava, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you," he said. My heart shattered at that. Luckily Happy kept it together a little better than I did.
"Adam," he said. "This wasn't your fault okay? Some really bad guys wanted to hurt our family. And we all love that you want to protect her, but you're still a kid and it's not your responsibility to protect anyone."
"Adam, baby," I said. "Daddy and I will always do everything in our power to protect you and your sister. We love you so so much."
"I love you too," he said. "But I should've protected her."
"She's safe now and the bad guys won't be coming around for a long time," Happy said.
"Okay Daddy," he said.
"I love you little man," Happy said.
"I love you too Daddy," Adam said. I settled back into the bed, thankful beyond words that my family was still whole.
