Even Though She Isn't Yours - Happy

Description: Your oldest daughter plays travel volleyball and Happy and her biological father bond during a tournament.

"Hey mom," my oldest daughter said as she was getting ready for bed.

"Yeah baby," I said.

"You and Hap are going to my tournament tomorrow, right?" She asked. I'd had her at 16, and unfortunately her father and I broke up shortly after having her. We'd stayed good friends and he is still a huge part of her life.

"Yeah, we'll be there baby," I said. "It's your last one."

"I know. Just making sure," she said. She said her goodnights and headed to bed as I started to tidy up and wait for Happy to get home.

He arrived home about an hour later.

"Hey babe," he said, kissing my lips quickly as he took his kutte off. He hung it up by the door and took his gun from his waistband, unloading it, and putting it in the safe he has in the closet by the front door.

"Emma wants to make sure we'll be at the tournament tomorrow," I said.

"Of course we will baby. I told the guys about it and that I wasn't taking my phone so they can't call me away," he said. He and I had gotten together when I was 20, so he's been a big part of Emma's life too.

"Good," I said. "The babies are in bed asleep for a few hours already and Em went to bed like an hour ago."

"I'm going to go shower and we can head to bed," he said, kissing my head as he walked by me.

The next morning, we got up pretty early and got everyone around before driving the half hour to where the tournament was. I'd been able to talk Happy out of wearing his kutte, but he insisted on bringing his gun "in case anything happened". I wasn't impressed but I knew I would lose that argument so I dropped it.

When we got there, Emma's dad and step mom were already waiting for us. She jumped out and started talking to them the second she laid eyes on them. Happy and I got out and grabbed the other two kids. Our two year old son, Isaiah was asleep again so Happy just held him as I took our three month old daughter Amanda out of her car seat and put her into a baby carrier.

"How have you been?" Emma's dad asked as he walked up.

"Great," Happy said as the two shook hands. This was their coparenting technique, and hey it's worked for the past ten years so they must be doing something right.

We headed into the gym and set up "camp" for the team. Other parents started showing up with the rest of her team and Emma was off socializing before long.

The day passed relatively quickly. Happy and Emma's dad were beyond excited to cheer loudly for Emma. The two were as close as Happy can get to anyone outside the club. It was nice that the father of my first born and the father of my younger kids got along so well.

Before long, we'd won out the pool and all the bracket games. We were waiting for the gold medal game to start when my phone rang.

I grabbed it and answered it as I bounced Amanda in hopes she'd fall asleep.

"Hello," I said.

"Hey, it's Jax. We just finished up for the day and the club wants to know how she's doing," he said.

"The gold medal games starts in about fifteen minutes," I said. He relayed the news and everyone cheered loudly.

"Does she need a fan section?" He asked.

"Ask your daughter if she wants her fan section," I said, looking at Happy and Emma's father. The two glanced at one another before Happy called Emma over.

Within a few seconds she ran over and took the phone from me. She handed it to me after she'd hung up with Jax.

"They're on their way," she said before returning to her team. I was thankful that she had the club despite not being Happy's daughter. It started out with Happy and I dating and me being around a lot. Then we went into a lockdown and she made friends with some of the other kids and now the club all treat her as their own.

Eventually the game started and the guys from the club arrived, standing in a group around Happy and I. Chibs had taken Isaiah and held him, talking to him about the game as they watched.

Emma's team won! Everyone was very excited because it'd been a pretty intense game. The team took tons of pictures together and Emma ran around hugging the guys from the club and thanking them all for being there to support her.

When things had finally settled down and we were getting ready to leave, we were one of the last groups still there.

"Ready?" Emma's dad asked as she stood up and grabbed her bag.

"Yeah," she said. "The girls want to go to like a team dinner thing sans parents if that's cool."

"Yeah of course," her dad said.

"Be careful," I said. She nodded and hugged me.

"Call if you need anything," Happy said as she hugged him too. "And congrats again."

"Thanks Hap," she said. She headed off with her father as Happy and I took the babies out to the car and we started to head home.

As he drove, I thought a lot about how lucky I was to find him. He helped me raise my daughter alongside her father and eventually her stepmom. I didn't even ask for his help, he just offered one day and I started to let him help more and more.

"What's got your thoughts?" He asked.

"How lucky I am to have met you," I said softly.

"You're a dork," he said in response.

"Ah, but I'm your dork," I said.

He chuckled at me. "Yeah, I guess I'll keep you around."

"I think how's a little late to decide you don't like me anymore," I said.

"Yeah, I think so," he said.

"Seriously though Happy," I said. "You're amazing with all three of em and I really was so lucky to find you to help me raise Emma even though she isn't biologically yours."

"And I was lucky enough to find you," he said, bringing my hand to his lips and kissing it so he could keep his eyes in the road.

"I love you Hap," I said.

"I love you too baby," he said.
