Doesn't Change - Happy

Description: You and Happy have a fifteen year old son who comes out as bisexual.

"Hey Ma," my son, Axle said as he walked into the kitchen. I was working on dinner as the younger two kids played with some toys in the living room. Happy and I had Axle when we were pretty young so we took about eight years to have baby number two and another five after that to have number three.

"What's up?" I asked. He looked stressed about something.

"When is Dad gonna be home?"

I glanced up at the clock. With any lucky it would be like five minutes.

"Pretty soon," I said. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah," he said and turned to walk away.

"Axle, what's going on?"

"I'll talk to you and dad at the same time," he said.

"You're not in danger are you?"

He shook his head no and went to the living room, sitting down on the couch and pulling his phone out.

I continued working on dinner until Happy got home about ten minutes later. The younger two, Milo and Poppy, ran to greet him as he hung his kutte up.

He took them back to the living room and said hi to his oldest before making his way to the kitchen.

"Axle," I called softly.

Happy kissed my cheek before going to grab a beer.

He made his way into the kitchen and stood awkwardly near me. He was putting me between him and his father and that worried me.

"What's going on?" I asked softly as I turned to face him.

"I, uh, I've been thinking a lot and, I don't really know how to say it. So, I'm just gonna say it," he said. He took a long pause and we waited but when he still didn't seem to have the words, I reached out and placed my hand on his cheek to gain his attention. He was crying.

"Axle, we love you. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing is going to change that," I said.

He nodded and grabbed my hand.

"I'm bisexual," he said. The words were so quiet that I almost missed them.

"Thank you for telling us," I said. "That's a huge thing. We love you."

"She's right kid," Happy said, walking over and hugging his son. "You thought we were going to be upset?"

"Well, yeah," he said. "You're pretty conservative."

I scoffed a little and started laughing.

"The club is a hippie commune," I said. "They look conservative and scary but they're not."

"And your ma would kick my ass if I was anything but supportive of gay rights," Happy said.

"That's what you get for marrying someone who isn't straight," I said.

"What?" Axle asked.

"I'm bisexual too," I said. He came over and hugged me tightly as he sobbed into my shoulder.

"I love you baby," I said softly as I held him. He was bigger than me now so I didn't get to hold him often. That means I take every opportunity I get to hold him.

After a few minutes he calmed down and went to the sink to splash some cold water on his face.

"Uh, since you took that well, I've been talking to this guy," he said.

"No dating til you're sixteen," Happy said. "That rule doesn't change just cause you're dating a dude."

"Okay fine," he said, smiling slightly.

"Your birthday's pretty soon. I know you just wanted something low key and family but if you want to invite him that's fine by us," I said. Axle nodded and thanked me.

"You are an amazing young man," I said, hugging him one more time.

"Ma," he groaned as I hugged him.

"Okay, I'll let ya be," I said. "Go check on your siblings for me. I've gotta talk to your dad."

He nodded and kissed my cheek before running off to the living room.

"How could he think we wouldn't be supportive?" I asked softly. My eyes were watering a bit.

"It's okay baby," Hap said, pulling me into his arms. "He knows now. That's what matters."

"I know, but what if he hadn't come out?"

"You called that one when he was in the second grade and watched Shark Boy and Lava Girl on repeat for a month straight. He was obsessed with Shark Boy."

"I mean to be fair so was I," I said, laughing slightly.

"He's a good kid. This doesn't change that," Happy said. He kissed my lips before grabbing a beer from the fridge.

"What?"

"I'm going to celebrate with my son," he said.

"Absolutely not. He is fifteen," I said.

"Then we'll smoke," he said.

I glared at him and he put the beer away. He grunted in annoyance. I rolled my eyes at him and he kissed my head before leaving me to finish dinner. I heard him and Axle talking about Axle's soon to be boyfriend and I smiled slightly. My family was far from perfect but you could always feel the love that surrounded us and that made it better than anything.
