Cause This is Where the Car Broke Down - Opie
Description: You're on the run from your hometown with your son when your car breaks down and the TM mechanics have to come save you.
"God bless," I mumbled as my car started smoking.
"Momma?" My son, AJ, asked from the back seat. He's two, so he didn't really know what was going on as I pulled over and killed the engine.
"It's nothin' baby," I said. I got out as I popped the hood. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I sighed a little and went to grab my phone when a police car pulled up behind me.
"What seems to be the problem ma'am?" He asked.
"I'm not really sure," I said with a chuckle.
"Well, I happen to know the owner of a garage. I can give em a call and worse comes to worse they can tow it," he said.
"That'd be great," I said. He grabbed his phone and called someone as I went to get my son from his car seat.
I stood in front of the car talking to the chief for a few minutes as we waited for the tow truck.
"So are you planning on staying in Charming?" He asked.
"'M gonna have to for a few days," I said.
He chuckled a little as a tow truck pulled up in front of my car.
"Hello ma'am," the taller of the guys said as he approached us. "Unser." The chief did a polite little nod before allowing the man to come talk to me.
"What seems to be the problem?"
He was tall, definitely several inches above six feet. He was wearing a dark beanie to cover his hair despite the heat of California.
"Started smokin' so I pulled off. Luckily the Sheriff stopped and called y'all," I said. "Might be the three days straight on the road."
"Well, that could do it. What're you running from?"
"We ain't got enough time to unpack all that," I said.
"Maybe you and I could grab a meal and talk some time then," he said. "You got a place to stay while we're working on this?"
"I'll figure somethin' out. I'm sure Charmin' has a park," I said, bouncing my son a bit.
"Well, now that Sack has your car hooked up, you're going to have to come to the garage with us for paperwork and such," he said.
"Works for me," I said.
The police officer offered to take AJ and I since there wasn't enough room in the truck and within ten minutes I was standing in the office of the garage filling out the paperwork.
"So, what brings you to Charming?" Gemma, the lady working the office asked as I finished up the paperwork.
"Well, this is where the car broke down," I said.
"I know a girl on the run when I see one," she said.
"With all due respect ma'am," I said. "I'm just tryin' to give my son a better life than he had where we came from."
"Hey," the guy from earlier said, peeking his head in the office. "I have news."
"Good or-?"
"Yeah, good, well for your car," he said. "Just overheated. Gonna cost about two hundred to replace the water pump."
"Two hundred and how long?"
"Gonna take at least two days to get the part in," he said. I nodded a bit.
"I'll get you the money," I said.
"What about transportation?" Gemma asked.
"I can walk," I said. "Charmin' don't seem too big."
"I can drop you by a motel on my way home," the guy offered.
"I can't ask you to do that. I hardly know you," I said.
"You didn't ask. I offered. And the names Opie," he said.
"(Y/N)," I said.
"Give me twenty minutes or so and I'll take ya," he said. I nodded a bit and sat down on the couch with AJ. I talked to Gemma for a while as I waited for Opie to finish up.
It didn't take too long before I was in the front seat of Opies car. AJ was in the back and our bags were in the trunk.
"You got kids?"
"Two of em," he said, nodding a bit.
"What about a wife?"
"She passed away," he said.
"I'm so sorry," I said.
"Thanks," he said. "So, are you planning on sticking around?"
"I guess that depends on how Charmin' treats us," I said.
"Where are you from?"
"Don't matter," I said. "I ain't goin' back there."
A few months later, I was still in Charming. I'd been able to land a job and an apartment and Opie and I started dating.
We were at his place watching a movie with all three of the kids, well they'd all fallen asleep, when he first told me he loved me.
"(Y/N)," he said softly as I leaned further into his chest.
"Opie," I said.
"I love you," he said, looking down at our interlaced hands nervously.
"I love you too," I said. "I'm real happy this is where the car broke down."
