Better Days - Happy
Description: Kozik's old lady bonds with Happy after she loses her old man.
The second I locked eyes with Happy I knew something was wrong. Kozik wasn't with the guys. I shook my head and Happy jogged forward.
"I'm so sorry," he said. "Was supposed to be me." I sobbed into Happy's chest and he picked me up and carried me to Kozik's dorm room.
I grabbed Kozik's hoodie that he'd left on the bed and curled up around it and his pillow the second that Happy sat me on the bed. I cried for hours until I fell asleep.
When I woke up, Happy was still in the same spot he'd been in on the couch.
"What am I gonna do?" I asked softly.
"We figure it out together," he said. He handed me an envelope. The words "To my beautiful bride" were scrawled on the front in Kozik's messy handwriting. I opened the envelope to reveal a letter.
To my beautiful bride and the mother of my unborn child,
I know we planned on forever and if you're reading this, that means our forever was shorter than we expected. I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise to you and our baby. There's no words to describe how sorry I am to have left you so soon. I love you doll. And our perfect baby. I love him/her (I'm still hoping for a prospect) already. Tell him Daddy said to take it easy on you. I'm sorry I won't be there to hold your hand through your appointments and labor. You'll do great. You're an amazing mom already and you're just starting out. I believe in you so much baby.
I've entrusted Happy with your protection baby. He's got you and the little one, no matter what. He'll take care of whatever you need, we both know it. The guys still don't know you're pregnant but tell them soon before Gemma puts two and two together and is pissed. You'll have enough on your plate without that.
One final thing before I run out of time and don't get to say it. Please move on. It doesn't have to be soon or for a few years. Just, when the time is right and you're ready, I want you to know you have my blessing to move on and be happy.
I love you baby doll. Always have and always will. I'll be keeping tabs until we meet again.
Love, Kozik
I sobbed more as I read the letter, dreading what the next few days and weeks would bring.
———————— Three Years Later ———————
"KJ," I said. The two year old looked up at me as I sat his breakfast in front of him. "Wanna go see your uncles today?"
"And Happy?" He asked. I nodded as I kissed his forehead.
Happy was a huge help throughout my pregnancy and delivery. He more or less lived with me while I adjusted to being a new mom. He also offered up his mother's advice and old tricks when he remembered them. He was more than enough help that I easily named him godfather. I knew Kozik would approve.
I missed my husband more and more each day but it also got easier with time. I go to his headstone once a week and just talk to him.
Today is especially tough though. Today is three years since he passed. I still wear my wedding bands just on my middle finger now. I was easing into being ready to move on. I knew Kozik wanted me to be happy and to move on.
I looked at the picture hanging in the hall. Kozik and I on our wedding day. I shook my head as my eyes watered. It's been a month since our wedding anniversary and I've cried damn near every night.
"Momma," KJ said as he finished up. I looked at him and he ran over.
"Why are you sad?" He asked as I picked him up.
"I just miss your Daddy a little more today," I said. I heard a bike pull up out front and before long the door was unlocking and I knew it was Happy.
"KJ, (Y/N)," Happy said. I sat KJ down and he ran off as I poured Happy a cup of coffee.
"How're you holding up?" Happy asked.
"I've had better days," I said.
"But," he prompted.
"But better days lay ahead too," I said. He nodded and hugged me tightly.
"We all miss him baby," Happy said. I nodded as I cried into his shoulder.
"I've got Junior for a few. Go see him," Happy said after a few minutes. I nodded and kissed my sons head while he continued to play with his motorcycle toys. I grabbed my keys and drove the short distance to the cemetery.
I kneeled by Kozik's headstone and started talking to him softly. I mainly just filled him in on what's been going on with me and with his son.
I sat there for about half an hour just talking and remembering my husband. I held his dog tags tightly in my right hand as I spoke. They made me feel close to him.
"I still love you Koz," I said softly.
"Excuse me, ma'am," a soft voice said behind me. I turned as I wiped my eyes. "I'm Amy and I'm a medium. Um did your husband pass?"
"Three years ago," I said.
"He says he loves you and he's so proud of you," she said. "He's also asking about KJ."
"Our son," I said. "I gave birth about six months after he passed."
She nodded and hugged me tightly.
"He said to be happy," she said.
"Be happy or be with Happy?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Both," she said. "He trusts no one more than his brother."
I chuckled as she looked concerned. "Brothers by choice, not by blood. Thank you."
"You're welcome," she said. "He's been bugging me to come find you for a couple hours now."
"He was stubborn that's for sure," I said. She laughed and we both headed off.
When I pulled back into the driveway, Happy had KJ outside looking at his bike. When KJ saw me he instantly ran over to me.
"Herman Evan Kozik Junior," I said softly. "What have I told you about running in the driveway?"
"Not to," he said but I couldn't stay mad at him. His bright blue eyes had instantly gone sad and his blonde hair was a mess.
"Can you go play for a minute?" I asked. "Momma and Happy need to have an adult conversation."
He nodded and ran off as I sat him down.
"Ran into a medium at the cemetery. Apparently Koz wouldn't quit bugging her about finding me," I said. "He said to be happy and to be with Happy cause there's no one he trusts more than his brother."
"How confused was she?" He asked.
"Very," I said. We'd never believed in mediums, but this had happened before. Happy had taken me out to dinner one night shortly after KJ was born and she had stopped us in a restaurant to tell me my husband was proud of me. I broke down in sobs and we ended up leaving early.
"I'd like to be with you too," he said softly.
"One day at a time?" I asked. He nodded as he held my left hand.
"You moved them?"
"Felt it was time to start trying to move on," I said.
"And you chose me?"
"Everyday," I said. "You've been by my side through so much and I already know how great you are with my son. Plus you're willing to try things at my pace."
"Whatever you need," Happy said.
"I know," I said and nodded before he pulled me into a hug.
