Sonicbronyuniversez Review one: The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar

Sonicbronyuniversez walks out onto the screen in the form of a German Shepherd with an emerald in his head

Sonicbronyuniversez: So I thought about doing intros, and I decided, why not this?

Sonic and the black knight with me plays during the intro, with the lyrics starting when the clips are shown, with one verse playing in between clips

Sonic homing attacks shadow in Sonic adventure two and then Steven from Steven Universe is seen sacrificing himself to Aquamarine. Sonicbronyuniversez is seen bashing The Hero from The amazing world of Gumball and then he's seen praising the episode known as The Choices. Ash is seen in a battle with Alain in the Pokemon XY anime as Greninja blocks Charizard's Thunder punches by using his Water shuriken as a sword. Twilight is seen blasting Tirek into the floor and then Kion is shown using the roar of the elders in anger against Janja in Never roar again. Dipper and Male Pines from Gravity Falls are seen doing their awkward sibling hug. Aang from Avatar the last airbender is seen battling the fire lord and then Korra from the sequel series, The Legend of Korra, is shown to be doing some probending. Weed from Ginga Densetsu Weed is seen using the Zetsu Tenrou Battouga on Hougen just as Goku appears on the sceeen. Goku turns Super Saiyan blue and gets into his famous pose when going up against Frieza in Resurrection F as the music stops as soon as Goku says his next line.

Goku: Don't blame me if I break you.

The intro ends with Sonicbronyuniversez being shown and the title of the video/story is shown above him

Sonicbronyuniversez dashes up to the screen and exits Ultra Instinct, more than ready to get to the review

Sonicbronyuniversez: So I thought about doing reviews for a while now, and one day when I was at school, I said why the hell not and got onto a laptop. And I already knew what I was going to review first, and that's the pilot movie to my favorite children's show currently airing, that ISN'T targeting over five year old's but can still entertain. This is, The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar. As I said, this is targeting little kids, but the way this show handles itself is fantastic.

Sonicbronyuniversez: Don't get the wrong idea, there have been (Shows the fog scene from The Lost Gorillas, which is his least favorite scene from that episode.) some episodes that got under my skin, or some that are (Shows Bupu whining to the guard at the grass grounds in Beshte and the hippo lanes, which is a scene he neither likes or hates) just the worst, (Throws the episode clips off) But I genuinely do love this show. And in contrast to how I feel, some people really hate this show, and to them, I feel they don't give it a chance. Just because it's confusing with the timeline, doesn't mean it's bad. Then again this special had some pretty high expectations since it's been a decade since we got any more Lion King related media. So how does the Lion Guard pilot movie stand out? Well let's FIND out.

Sonicbronyuniversez starts playing the special for us as we dive in

Sonicbronyuniversez: So after an admittedly poorly executed joke involving Kion and Bunga unintentionally inturupting Kiara's teaching of Queen, and they're seen playing baobab ball, which honestly looks pretty fun. Kion is then a savage when Kiara asks him what he's gonna grow up to be in a smug fashion, which also foreshadows some of Kion's inner thoughts in a pretty unique way from what I've seen. We then get this fun little song as they run through the Pride lands.

Sonicbronyuniversez shows the clip that plays during A beautiful day when Kion and Bunga are playing, talking again after about five seconds

Sonicbronyuniversez: While not my outright favorite song in the movie, that we'll get to later on, it's still a fun tune that shows how much Kion and Bunga are enjoying themselves. (Screen turns dark) Little do they know however, that their lives would become something much more. (Screen turns back to normal) Until then, fun for life boy!

Sonicbronyuniversez shows the clip of Bunga tickling Kion and then them watching the baobab roll into the Out lands

Kion: Aww. It rolled into the Outlands. Game over.

Bunga: Says who? I'm not afraid of the Outlands.

Kion: Neither am I! It's just... My dad! He says we shouldn't...

Bunga: Oh! Puh-leeze! Simba's a big ol' scaredy cat when it comes to the Outlands. You know what my uncles always say!

Bunga jumps into the Out lands, leaving Kion with a subtle eye roll

Kion: Hakuna matata.

Sonicbronyuniversez gets back to talking as the scene continues

Sonicbronyuniversez: Don't worry dudes. I'll get to Kion and Bunga's dynamic soon enough. For now though, let's see how they deal with meeting the henchmen of the special's main antagonist. And then this happens when Cheezi calls Bunga Janja's lunch.

Kion uses the roar of the elders, stunning Cheezi and Chungu

Sonicbronyuniversez: Alright, so I'm just gonna bring this up while I can. All the hate I see for this show seems to be for the fact that it's not respecting the Lion King formula. Since when has it disrespected it? Just because there's this cool roar thing doesn't mean the whole show is gonna be abysmal. So anyway, Kion and Bunga head back after Bunga says his unbungaleavable thing that I admittedly don't understand the point of, and then we get a line that even the LG haters seem to like.

Simba: Son, we need to talk...

Kion: Oh no. Dad, we already had that talk. "Can you feel the love tonight..." I know all about that mushy stuff!

Sonicbronyuniversez: Did Kion have a crush on someone beforehand? Anyway. We then learn about the Lion Guard as Simba and Raifki take the duo to a lair, and their backstory is actually pretty cool.

Simba: When your grandfather Mufasa was about your age, his younger brother, Scar, was leader of the Lion Guard. Scar also had the gift of the Roar. The Roar made Scar feel powerful. But that power went to Scar's head. He began to think that he should be king, instead of his older brother Mufasa. So Scar ordered the Lion Guard to help him take down Mufasa. When the Guard refused, Scar was furious. And then, Scar used the Roar to destroy the Lion Guard. What Scar didn't realize was that by using the Roar for evil, he would lose the power of the Roar completely.

Sonicbronyuniversez: Sure it messes around with Scar a bit, but that's giving him development aside from wanting to be King. So then we get this moment from Kion and Bunga that's really well done when Kion starts to look for Guard members.

Kion: Dad said the Lion Guard needs the Pride Lands' bravest, strongest, fastest, and keenest of sight. So I think I'll go ask the bravest animal in the Pride Lands first.

Bunga: Kion, wait! Before you go asking whoever you think is the bravest, think about this... I might not be the biggest honey badger. But I know what's in my heart. And I'm not afraid of anything, or anyone!

Kion: I know, Bunga. That's why...

Bunga: I'll help the Lion Guard fight hyenas. Or jackals! Or crocodiles! Or vultures!

Mzingo: Vultures?

Sonicbronyuniversez: That's Mzingo by the way. He's the special's tertiery antagonist.

Bunga: Or great big rock slides or wild fires or floods! I will stand with the Lion Guard! I'll never give up! I'll, I'll...

Kion: Why don't you stop talking so I can ask you to join the Lion Guard?

Bunga: Say what...

Kion: Come on, Bunga! You're the bravest animal I know! I want you to be the first to join the new Lion Guard.

Bunga: Zuka Zama!

Sonicbronyuniversez: Now one thing I should bring up is that Kion and Bunga have a great dynamic. I really like this one, as it's much more than just an intelligent one and an idiot being bff's. Bunga's a lot smarter than we think, he just doesn't show it. And Kion's a lot more vulnerable than the hates make him seem. And with that in mind, I like Kion a lot more than Bunga, but they do work off each other pretty well. And this moment is a great example of that, and my favorite one at that. So then we cut to Kiara and her friends and, they're okay in this. At least they aren't bitches. Zuri's pretty obsessed with her looks, and Tiffu's just a nice kid. Thank god Baboons somewhat redeemed them for be after Can't wait to be Queen botched them. Anyone who saw my ten words or less on season one knows what I'm talking about here.

The scene where Kion tells Kiara, Zuri, and Tiffu about his new role is shown

Sonicbronyuniversez: So basically, Zuri gets her claws broken, even though she pretty much brought that onto herself, (Mutters) stupid bitch, (Speaks out loud) and then Kion tells the others about his new role. In which they take it...

Kiara: (Chuckles) You and Bunga? Protecting the Pride Lands? Does Dad know about this?

Sonicbronyuniversez: To be fair, annoying Kion is clearly not her intention. This is just one of those cases where these two act how siblings would act. Anyway, Timon and Pumbaa aren't on board with this, with Timon's reasons being pretty unusual, and then it leads to Bunga singing this...surprisingly catchy song about his catchphrase.

Bunga: ♪ Life's exciting, life is fun

♪ Zuka Zama Zom zom zom

Bunga is seen riding an elephant as he continues to sing

Bunga: ♪ A big adventure for everyone

♪ Zuka Zama Zom zom zom

Sonicbronyuniversez: This song is a really good one. Better than the first one, which was also good, but this one just made me more into it. It showed Bunga's personality really well, and even though it didn't entirely work, it was still a lot of fun. And then this happens.

Kion: Timon, Pumbaa, please. I really do need Bunga on the Lion Guard. He's the bravest animal I know.

Timon: Bravest animal you know?

Kiara: He's brave, all right. Brave bordering on stupid.

Bunga: Thanks, Kiara!

Sonicbronyuniversez: Okay, that shows Kiara's point almost perfectly. And then Pumbaa farts. Yeah, this is pretty predictable, and I feel it'd be funnier to see other characters in the show farting. Like Kion, Janja, and maybe Jasiri. Though, this wasn't as annoying as it could've been. Fondly enough though, all three of them do so in The Legend of Kion. Especially Jasiri. For some weird reason I really like making her fart in my story, and I plan to have her fart the most out of everyone in both the Wattpad and Fanfiction version. Probably because she's a tomboy. And no, that's not all she does so don't whine about it! Anyway, The Legend of Kion is a story I made. It's in script format on here though, so go to Fanfiction for a better version of that made you interested. (Looks at clip telling him not to self advertize) Hey dude, if others can do it then so can I! Why is everyone so critical with me that I can't even write a chapter without people whining about the issue with canon, even though it's not meant to be canon! It's, FANFIC people! You take an idea, and you do something with it! Not follow the timeline perfectly! (Breathes in and out) There we go. Script format doesn't ruin a story, and The Legend of Kion doesn't have forced personalities, or an issue with canon. Because it's not meant to BE canon. It is a combination of Lion King, with Dragon Ball elements. It's my own take on Lion King, so if you're gonna say it's against the timeline in your review, then leave. Because that complaint is invalid. Anyway, back to the review.

The scene with Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu in the volcano is shown

Cheezi: Janja, I'm hungry!

Chungu: Me, too!

Janja: You two only have yourselves to blame. To think that you were scared by the roar of a lion cub!

Cheezi: Janja, see, Kion's roar, it wasn't like, like a normal roar. It was, uh... (NERVOUS LAUGH) Super loud!

Chungu: And the clouds! They turned into roaring lions!

Janja: Oh! So you're scared of clouds, too?

Sonicbronyuniversez: I'll just bring up how much I like this trio together. I love how Janja's just openly insulting them, and they're hardly even affected by it. It really shows that they AREN'T bad characters or villains. Too bad the shoe never expands on them, as I especially like Janja. So anyway, Mzingo shows up and tells Janja about his plans, and then when he describes his own plan, we get this catchy little tune.

Janja: Tonight, we Outlanders will feast. Hyenas and vultures alike! Tonight, we strike!

Janja laughs as the theme for the song Tonight we strike played

Janja: ♪ When you live in the Outlands, It's better to make your own rules. Ask anyone outside the Pride Lands, The Circle of Life is for fools. (Vocalizing) We go where we want when we want to, And we eat; Yes, we eat as we please. That Kion can't give us a curfew.

Mzingo: ♪ Or tell us to stay in the trees.

Chorus: ♪ No! Tonight, we strike! Tonight, we strike! No one's safe, So the time is right! The Circle of Life's gonna feel our bite! Tonight we strike, Tonight, we strike!

Sonicbronyuniversez: I'm not even kidding right now dudes; I was surprised when I heard these instrumentals. This is my favorite song in the special, and for good reason. First off, Janja has a surprisingly good singing voice, and the song itself is a lot of fun. I love seeing the hyenas and how they work off each other in this; like seriously; whoever the fuck wrote Cheezi biting Janja's ass should get an award. If this was the last song in the movie, I'd be perfectly fine with that.

Kion is shown searching for the guard as their perspective clips are shown

Sonicbronyuniversez: So anyway, we then cut to Kion who's searching for guard members, as I should state is oblivious to what Simba really meant before we went into the final territory. Anyway, he first goes off to find his snarky egret friend Ono; who is hilarious, and then his super polite and friendly hippo buddy Beshte; who's my least favorite guard member, but I still like him, and then we cut to Fuli, who's a lot like Sonic and Rainbow dash, except...nowhere near as good as either of them. Yeah, I do think Fuli's overrated, as one, I don't ship Fulion, and two, I find her to be in this show just so they could have a female member in the guard. Which is perfectly fine, I mean they at least made Fuli likable, but I just don't think of her as best character. Though, I can see why people do. And I actually respect Fuli for not being anywhere near as bitchy as she could've been when judging Kion's roar, and then when Kion shows it, this happens.

Kion lets out a squeak when attempting to do the roar, much to his confusion

Kion: What in the Pride lands?

Sonicbronyuniversez: Great swear avoiding too.

Fuli laughs a bit at Kion's roar

Fuli: Kion! You call that a roar?

Fuli chuckles a bit

Beshte: Didn't sound like a roar.

Bunga: That wasn't the Roar! That was a squeak!

Sonicbronyuniversez: Yes it was Bunga. So anyway, then Zazu finds Simba and lets Kiara and Tiffu do their hunting thing. And we then cut to what is the least favorite part of a Facebook friend of mine. And I can see why he hates it; but it's important to note that Simba's merely trying to be a good father here. Not like in The Savannah Summit, where he thought giving Kion a second chance when he didn't even lose the first one was usable. No, this Simba is merely looking out for Kion, and wanting what's best for him. Yeah he's harsh about it, but that's the thing. In case where your son has to protect the Pride lands, you have to be strict about it. You can't just say, 'Hey dude. Great job.' You have to criticize what you don't like. Again, I can see why some people hate this moment. But like I said; Simba's just being protective. While I don't adore this moment, I can see why it happened. And Kion walking off, though a typical cliche I'm neutral on, feels natural. And he didn't run off like a baby. He just walked. That's how you do it.

Kiara and Tiffu are then shown at the hunting grounds, seeming to be getting ready to begin tracking them

Kiara: Be sure to stay low while we're tracking the herd. And we need stay downwind, so they don't catch our scent. That's why it's important to watch how the grass moves.

Tiffu: Are we going to attack them?

Kiara: No. My dad says we should only take what the pride needs, to keep the Circle of Life in balance. If we took down gazelles just to learn how to do it, pretty soon there wouldn't be any left. Then we'd be as bad as the hyenas.

Sonicbronyuniversez: Not necessarily, as you'll mostly be doing it for training. Much more understandable.

Kiara: (GASPS) What's Mzingo doing up there? Vultures only circle like that when they're expecting to eat.

Tiffu: Kiara, look!

Kiara: Hyenas. And Janja's leading them.

Tiffu: There's so many of them!

Sonicbronyuniversez: There's like six, calm down. So after that, Kiara heads off to find Simba, Kion is next shown telling us something we already know, and then he sings what's easily my least favorite song in the movie. Not that it's a bad song, but it's the only song I don't like. It feels really genaric and like a pop song slowed down. Also, Kion's lament? You wanna see a lament done right, check out Steven Universe's Full Disclosure; where Steven's struggles are shown through visuals and emotions rather than words at the beginning. Yes, he talks to Renaldo beforehand, but it's overall how you do a lament correctly. Steven doesn't flatout say his problems in any way shape or form. And I get that Lion Guard is one of the smarter young kids shows, but that's why I expected more. Now that I think about it actually, Steven Universe does a lot of cliches that I normally don't like correctly. With that out of the way though, this happens.

Mufasa: Kion...

Kion: Heyvi kabisa... Are you...

Mufasa: Yes, Kion. I am your grandfather.

Kion: Mufasa. I've heard a lot about you.

Sonicbronyuniversez: Not gonna lie, this is pretty damn cool. So then we hear a reprise of the song that's a bit better than the main song, and then Bunga shows up and tells Kion about Janja's attack. Then when they see the attack, Kion says something that could make everyone who complains about the so called racism in the show shut the fuck up!

Kion: They don't care about the Circle of Life. They're not hunting for food. They want to throw the Pride Lands into chaos.

Sonicbronyuniversez: There's more to that, but I just wanted to show it for anyone who thought this show was racist when lines like THAT are spoken. Oh, and Ono says ditto. Awesome. So then one of the better of the shows fight scenes happens, seriously, the fights in this show can be terrible; and then Bunga lets out one of his new powers when he gets close.

Kiara: Bunga? Have you lost your mind?

Bunga: Never had one, Kiara! Now, if you don't mind. Scram ya, goofy gazelles! Take this!

Bunga lets out a giant fart onto the gazelles, making them run off

Sonicbronyuniversez: When you think about this scene rather than just saying it's the worst thing ever, you'll realize that honey badgers actually do that. Just not as big as Bunga's. That's...admittedly pretty clever. I know I made a running joke about about that in my ten words or less, but it really was good to great every time. So then we get to the climax of the battle with this in mind.

Kion: We're the Lion Guard, Janja. We defend the Circle of Life. You and your kind are not welcome in the Pride Lands. Ever!

Sonicbronyuniversez: Then Kion roars, and then everyone who says Kion's pointless can shut their crapholes. Though, there is one more line before the ending I wanna talk about.

Janja: You win today, Kion. Next time won't be so easy.

Sonicbronyuniversez: Says the main antagonist of season one, and still can't win once! Seriously dude! You've lost the most times out of everyone, and you're the only ones who I feel try every time! Hell, you didn't even try in The Rise of Scar; and that could've been an amazing battle if it wasn't for the pointless dry season plot! (Breathes in and out) Okay. I'm done. I'll save my anger on THAT for the review. So then the movie ends, and then we get the songs Here comes the Lion Guard, and It is time. Both of which are amazing; especially the latter in this nightcore I found.

Sonicbronyuniversez: I swear dudes; I feel like I'm watching a fantasy series whenever I hear that nightcore.

It is time nightcore by Funny Cat plays as the video wraps up

Sonicbronyuniversez: So yeah, overall, the movie itself was pretty good. Not a masterpiece like the first movie was, but still worth watching and a worthy pilot to the show, which turned out to be even better. The characters were charming, the story was well done, the songs, for the most part, were great; especially the last two. And the animation and voice acting, though voiced by kids and animated in flash, both manage to hit with me. And our snarky yet brave and playful hyena friend managed to fix the lack of brave females perfectly; even if she's not a main character. Overall, I give this movie a 6.5/10 for a nice movie rating. As I said before, there's a lot about this movie you can like. And the end credits song, It is time, is amazing and fits the emotion the show can have perfectly. While I wouldn't say Lion Guard is as good as Steven Universe or Gravity Falls, I'd say it's in my top ten favorite cartoons of all time. Though, if it had a higher rating for the demographic and could take more risks, it admittedly would've been in my top five, if not my top three. That's actually one of the reasons I made The Legend of Kion.

A screen flashes and Sonicbronyuniversez is shown leaning on a tv with Return of the roar playing

Sonicbronyuniversez: Check out the movie dudes. It really isn't THAT bad. Sure it has it's flaws, but what movie doesn't? And if you're not into this stuff then feel free to cehck out my work of The Legend of Kion on Fanfiction, or on here if you can find it. Both versions are different. And I also have some other reviews planned, so feel free to make some requests if you want. Until then, peace out dudes.

Least favorite part: The boring scene before Zuka Zama

Favorite character: Kion

Least favorite character: Zuri (Mainly because she didn't do crap)

Final response: Not my favorite movie ever, but still one I can say that I like.
