Level Upper
In Sakugawa Middle School:
Teacher: And from this, we can see that the most important thing in the ability developing curriculum of Academy City is "Personal Reality," or acquiring reality unto oneself. This is one and only basis for esper powers.
Saten wasn't focusing in class, when Uiharu wasn't here.
Flashback outside of school:
Saten was on the phone with Uiharu.
Saten: Huh? A cold?
Uiharu: Yes. I only have a slight fever, but it just won't seem to go down.
Saten: Oh. We'll get plenty of rest ok.
Saten ends the call.
End of flashback:
Teacher: Saten... Saten Ruiko!
Saten: Y-Yes?
Teacher: You look like you have this all down, huh? Would you explain simply the last point?
Saten: Y-Yes.
Saten looks through the book finding the answer.
Saten: Let's see... let's see...
Teacher: Never mind. Be sure to study up on Personal Reality next time. That's all for today.
After school, Saten was still studying in the
class.
Saten: (Who cares about theories and allegories? I wish they'd teach us some techniques to level up quickly.)
In Academy city:
Sonic, Misaka, and Kuroko were walking together.
Misaka: Sure is hot today, huh?
Sonic: I'm gonna sweat crazy if this keeps going.
Misaka turns around, as Kuroko was thinking about something.
Misaka: What's with the frown face?
Sonic: Huh?
Kuroko: I just can't believe it about Kaitabi Hatsuya being a Level 2.
Misaka: Kaitabi? Oh, the one behind those graviton attacks earlier.
Sonic: That's his name? Man I'm late.
Misaka: But all the destruction he caused was Level 4 class.
Kuroko: Yes, which means that it's... this is...
Sonic: You mean Level Upper?
Misaka, Kuroko: Huh?
Sonic: Misaka, don't you remember? Saten told us about Level Uppers, that can increase your esper power, no matter what level are you.
Misaka: Oh, I remember, but...
Kuroko: Theres no way that can be true. It's a myth.
Sonic: Yeah, but anything can be true. Just because it's a myth, doesn't mean it won't be like that forever.
Misaka: Hey, now, why don't we calm down and take a break, okay?
Sonic: Sure.
Kuroko: Okay.
The three went to a ice stand and waited for the waiter.
Misaka: What do you guys want?
Sonic: I'm getting the blueberry ice! I heard it makes you cool, which I've always been!
Misaka: Ha ha! All right. What about you, Kuroko?
Kuroko: The same thing that you're getting, sissy. It's is mystifying, is it not? When you hear a wind chime, it feels a little bit cooler.
Misaka: Yeah, it's called synesthesia.
Sonic, Kuroko: Synesthesia?
Waiter: Thank you for waiting.
The waiter brought in the blueberry ice, and two strawberries.
Waiter: Here, two strawberries and a blueberry.
Misaka: "The reception of multiple sensations from a single stimulus." We're paying separately, here.
Kuroko: Heh? Sissy, you're the one who offered...
Misaka: Huh? What's that?
Kuroko: Oh, nothing.
Sonic: He he.
Kuroko: Hmph!
In the bench:
Misaka: So anyway, when you see reddish colors, you feel warmer, and when you see bluish colors, you feel cooler, right?
Kuroko: They call them warm colors and cool colors.
Misaka: Right. And this shaved ice is strawberry red.
Kuroko: I get you. The red syrup adds to the fruity image of it.
Sonic: My shaved ice is blueberry blue. It's so good!
Misaka: Mmm. Cold.
Kuroko: Oh, sissy...!
Kuroko takes a bite as she got brain freeze.
Saten: Misaka! Sonic! Kuroko!
Misaka: Saten...
Sonic: Hey.
Saten: That sure looks good.
A few minutes later:
Saten was having a brain freeze.
Misaka: This is starting to become a summer tradition.
Saten: You still want to eat it, even knowing that's what will happen. Oh, Are yours strawberry and blueberry?
Sonic: Yep.
Misaka: Mmhmm. Would you like a spoonful?
Kuroko's expression changed.
Saten: Wow, you mean it? Don't mind if I do...
Saten takes a bite of Misaka's ice.
Saten: Mmm, delicious. Want to have some lemon in return?
Misaka: Thanks.
Kuroko started screaming.
Saten: I really wanna try the blueberry.
Misaka: Same here. (Wait, if I take a bite out of Sonic's... that's a indirect kiss! Well it's not like a real kiss or anything. I'm just getting a bite of it.
Saten: He he...
Saten: *Whisper* Sonic, now's your chance.
Sonic: W-What?!
Saten: He he.
Sonic: Uhh, anyway, sure you can have some.
Misaka and Saten takes a bite of Sonic's ice.
Saten: Mmmm. It's delicious.
Misaka: It really is good.
Sonic: I know right?
Saten: Now's our turn.
Misaka: Yeah. (I'm feeding him now... just calm down.)
Sonic: Sure.
Misaka and Saten gives Sonic both the strawberry and the lemon together as they both put it in his mouth.
Sonic: Mmmm amazing! The flavor with the strawberry and the lemon is delicious!
Kuroko: Ahhhhh! W-W-What... What are you doing?
Saten: Huh? Tasting each other's flavors.
Kuroko: Tasting each other's... each other's... each other's... (I could have done that! Kuroko, that's a good of a lifetime!)
Kuroko goes to give Misaka a bite.
Kuroko: W-Well then, you can third hand kis- I mean, taste my flavor, too.
Sonic: Don't you two got the same flavor?
Kuroko slams her head on the floor.
Kuroko: Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Kuroko, how stupid!
Few minutes later:
Misaka: Come to think of it, Saten, isn't Uiharu with you today?
Sonic: Oh yeah, where is she?
Saten: She stayed home from school with a summer cold. So I'm on my way to drop her off some medicine.
Misaka: Is it pretty bad?
Saten: She says it's nothing serious, but I'm still concerned, you know? Um, if you like...
In Uiharu's room:
Saten: And so, we came to check up on you!
Sonic, Misaka, Kuroko: Pardon the intrusion.
Uiharu: Thanks for going to the trouble.
Saten: Don't you worry about it. Now, don't move.
Saten takes out the thermometer and checks on Uiharu as she was in bed.
Saten: 37.3 degrees. Well, it is slightly elevated, so spend the rest of the day in bed. And no more sleeping with your tummy uncovered.
Uiharu: Saten, I got chilled because you keep flipping my skirt up.
Sonic: That's true.
Saten: No, that's because, as Uiharu's best friend, I'm concerned that she's wearing panties everyday, you know?
Uiharu: Of course I wear them everyday!
Misaka: Yeah, yeah, we know. Now come on, lie down, you're sick.
Saten: I'll go fix you a cold towel.
Sonic: Oh, I forgot to give you something.
Uiharu: Huh?
Sonic: Here. I brought you some ice.
Uiharu: Really? Thank you so much.
Sonic: It's nothing. How about this, every time I go out, I'll give you something.
Uiharu: Really? You mean it?
Sonic: Yeah of course.
Uiharu: Thank you.
Sonic: He he.
Uiharu: Oh, right, Kuroko. Have there been any developments in the graviton attacks case?
Kuroko: There is one thing, but it really is nothing. All we really know is that the culprit's ability was Level 2.
Misaka: But what he did was unmistakably Level 4 class stuff.
Uiharu: So the development is just that there's more we don't understand?
Sonic: Like I said before, Saten said something about a Level Upper, right, Saten?
Saten: Huh?
A few minutes later:
Kuroko: Raise a person's ability level?
Saten: Yeah, but like I said, it's just a rumor. It's an item that's unsubstantiated.
Misaka: Unsubstantiated?
Saten: That's right. The gist of the rumor is all mixed up, so it really is like an urban legend.
Sonic: I don't know. I think it is the Level Upper that is raising people's level.
Kuroko: Sonic could be right. The truth is, as far as cases where the level recorded in the databank and the actual damage do not match up. This isn't the first time it has happened.
Misaka: Huh?
Kuroko: The Tokiwadai stalking eyebrow girl, and the pyrokineticist bank robber, those are the two cases that you already know about, sissy, Sonic. There have also been other cases where the ability does not match the damage inflicted.
Misaka: You mean...
Saten: There really is a Level Upper?
Sonic: We don't know.
Misaka: Is there anything else you know about it?
Saten: Huh? Let's see... I don't know if it's true or fake, but there is something about people who use the Level Upper posting to a message board on the net.
Sonic: Really?
Misaka: Do you know which message board?
Saten: Uh, let's see... let's see...
Uiharu takes out her laptop.
Uiharu: Could it be this one?
They looked at the laptop seeing the places where the message board is.
Uiharu: This message board?
Saten: Ah, there it is!
Kuroko: Nicely done!
Sonic: Good idea. You remind me of one of my friends who's is smart like you.
Uiharu starts to blush.
Uiharu: Oh, really? He he.
Kuroko: Now If we can just investigate their identities and where they hang out...
Uiharu: I can't speak to their identities, but as for the hangouts, look, they seem to get together at this restaurant.
Sonic: You know what I'm thinking?
Misaka: Yep. Thanks, Uiharu! We'll go have a look! Oh, and take care of yourself!
Sonic: See ya!
Sonic and Misaka runs off.
Kuroko: Sissy! That's my job!
Kuroko follows them to the restaurant.
Uiharu: I wonder if they'll be alright?
Saten: Knowing those three, there's nothing to worry about. Misaka's a Level 5 and Kuroko's a Level 4, the pride of Academy City. And Sonic has a special talent of super speed. There's no point in us going, huh?
Uiharu: Saten...
Saten: Say, Uiharu, do you think that if we used the Level Upper, our levels really would increase, too?
Uiharu: Who knows? Oh, but cheating is wrong.
Saten: Yeah, I'm just saying, "if," that's all. It's alright, I wouldn't get involved. Hey, I got an idea! Today at school, the teacher singled me out, and I was stumped. Would you explain this to me?
Uiharu: Please don't ask me when I'm sick.
Saten: Are you hungry? I can make something for you.
Uiharu: It's not right to bride me with things like that.
Saten: Alright. Then I guess you don't want anything.
Uiharu was still hungry after the ice she ate.
Uiharu: I could eat.
Saten was in the kitchen cooking for Uiharu.
Saten: Yeah, he told me to study "Personal Reality," But I just don't get it, you know?
Uiharu: Yeah, what is this? I know in my mind that there's this "reality into oneself" thing.
Saten: "Unto oneself," huh? Unto you, Uiharu; unto me; what is that reality, anyway? Delusions maybe?
Uiharu: Oh, that might be close. Delusions are what they are, but there's also hard and fast assumptions, and the power of belief. Maybe it's a strong feeling like that.
Saten: The power of belief, huh?
Uiharu: I myself am only a Level 1, so I may not be that all convincing.
Saten: Mmhmm, thanks. Honestly, if you said "reality unto oneself" to me, it was as clear as mud, but I get the feeling that I understand it now. I wonder if my level will go up someday, too, if I believe.
Uiharu: You'll be fine. Saten, once you get an idea in your head, there's no shaking it.
Saten: You inadvertently say the worst things, you know that?
Uiharu: He he.
Outside of JonaGarden:
Misaka: Well, this is it. Well, shall we go in?
Sonic: Yep.
Kuroko: There you go again, sissy.
Misaka: You're in Judgement, so people might know who you are. And Sonic, I'll handle it.
Sonic: Alright then.
Kuroko: But...
Misaka: Look, just let me handle this. Okay, you two hang back, sit down, and wait for me.
Kuroko: What could this be? I'm feeling very uneasy.
Misaka: Alright, here I go!
Kuroko: Hold on a sec, sissy!
Sonic: He he.
Inside the restaurant:
Sonic and Kuroko we're sitting in the other side watch Misaka talking with the guys.
Man: You wanna know more about the Level Upper?
Misaka: Mmhmm. I happened to stumble upon your posts on the net, and thought, if I can, I'd sure like to learn more, so... Please! I'm begging you! Okay? You don't mind, right?
Man: Don't know nothing about it. Now scram, will you?
Misaka: Oh, don't give me that.
Man: You're bugging us. Ain't it time for a kid like you to be in bed?
Misaka: (This isn't working.)
Kuroko: My hunch that this would fail is coming true already.
Sonic: Hmm...
Misaka: I'm not really that much of a child.
Kuroko spit some of the shake on the table.
Man2: You sure aren't a child, are you? You're just my type.
Sonic: (Seriously?)
Misaka: Wow! Really? Then, will you tell me more?
The man started to look at her thighs.
Man2: But then, I ain't gonna do it for free, you know?
Misaka: Um, if you want some money, I can pay you a little.
Man2: Money is okay.
The man stands up next to Misaka.
Sonic's expression changed.
Kuroko: Sonic...
Sonic didn't say a word.
Man2: But in this situation, I'd rather have some of this.
The man tries to touch her, but she ducks under his hand.
Misaka: Yeah, but that sort of puts me off.
Kuroko slams her head on the table.
Misaka: I don't know you that well. Are you sure money won't do it?
Man2: You ain't a child, right?
Misaka acts like she's crying.
Misaka: I lied to my parents.
Man2: Huh? Where's this coming from?
Misaka: I don't have... anywhere else to turn but the Level Upper... so... can't you help...?
The man then blushes.
Kuroko keeps slamming her head on the table.
Man2: Whatever, just don't cry.
Misaka: I mean... I...
Man3: Isn't that uniform from Tokiwadai?
Man: Huh? Now that you mention it...
Man3: Sh could make for a surprisingly good money tree.
Man2: H-Hey...
Man: Alright. Don't cry, it's a real drag. We'll tell you more.
Kuroko stops slamming on the table.
Misaka: Thank you, mister.
Man: Okay, let's step out for a bit?
Misaka: Huh?
Man: You think we're gonna to spill our beans in here? Let's go.
They left the restaurant as Sonic stood up.
Kuroko: Uhh... Sonic...?
Sonic: Time for a introduction!
In a hallway:
Man: Okay then, this is far enough. No one will interfere with us here.
Misaka: Then-
Man: First, why don't you give us all the money on you?
Man3: And don't forget your cash card and PIN number. Oh, and any credit cards. Being s Tokiwadai lady, you've got some, right?
Misaka: Uh... I did withdraw some before I can, but I can't give you all of it.
Man: Huh? You wanna hear what we have to say, right? Then pay up, right now.
Man3: Yeah, yeah. You'd better pay up, quick. Or we would strip you bare, and take your wallet that way.
Misaka: What a pain.
The man walks towards her.
Man: Huh? Look, just make with the money-
Before the man got next to her, Sonic was walking.
Sonic: Hey, you!
Man: Huh?
Sonic: I don't know what you're trying to do to her, but you better back off!
Misaka: (Sonic has never acted like this before. Was he pissed about the guys trying to hit on me? Then he does love... but I don't know yet.)
Man: Or else what you blue rat? I'm done with you. Girl give us the-
Sonic punches the man in the face as he hits the fence and was knocked out
Man2: J-Junta?!
Man3: Why, you...!
Misaka: I've had enough. And here I was, being extra nice. But you're gonna tell me everything you know about the Level Upper.
Sonic: Yeah.
Man3: Don't go getting smug with us! We'll show you our powered up strength!
More man appeared behind Sonic and Misaka as they were surrounded.
Sonic: (If they know about the Level thing then...)
Misaka: (Have all these guys really uses this Level Upper thing? If there's this many of them at the same level as Kaitabi...
Man3: Now, take this! This is my Level 2-
Sonic kicks him in the gut as Misaka shocks everyone except Sonic.
Misaka: (With this many of you around, it's hard for me to hold back.)
Sonic: Welp, that's over with.
Girl: You two really did quite a number on them, didn't you?
Man2:B-Boss...
Girl: Hey, you guys, what were you doing to that little lady?
Man2: We're sorry.
Girl: Going after a girl's wallet like that...
Man2: B-But...
The girl slaps the man.
Sonic: Wow.
Misaka: Yeah.
Girl: Are you talking back to me?! I'll bury you!
Man2: S-Sorry!
Girl: You're not apologizing to me!
Man2: S-Sorry!
Girl: Come on, the rest of you, too!
All of the men stand in formation and apologize to Misaka.
Girl: That squares it, right? Can you forgive them? You guys, beat it!
All of the men walked off.
The girl started to walk towards them.
Sonic: Hey there.
Misaka: You must be their boss? Then you must know about the Level Upper, too.
Girl: Never mind that. You two sure took good care of my boys. You're prepared to answer for that, right?
Sonic: Wait, what?
Misaka: Prepared to... Uh, but didn't they just apologize to me?
Girl: That was that, but this is this. I have to pay you two back in full. Here goes!
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
The girl's hand touches the floor as the floor was moving.
Sonic: What the?
Misaka: Wha- What is this?! The ground is...!
Girl: My ability is called "Flux Coat." I'm freely able to control the viscosity of the asphalt.
The girl puts her hand deeply in the ground as Sonic and Misaka couldn't move.
Misaka: (I can't move!)
Girl: Whatcha gonna do? There's nowhere you can run.
Sonic: Misaka, I got an idea.
Misaka nods.
Misaka shoots electricity at the girl, but she uses the ground to protect herself.
Girl: That attack won't work against-
The girl noticed that Sonic and Misaka were gone.
Girl: W-What?! They vanished!
Misaka: Not bad.
The girl sees Misaka sticking to a wall.
Girl: How can you stay up there?!
Misaka: Electrical current. It creates a magnetic field. Directing it toward the rebar inside this wall can be handy, see?
Misaka shoots electricity at the girl again, but she blocks with from the ground.
Girl: Where's that other friend of yours?
Misaka: Up there.
Sonic comes from the sky and spins down like a ball.
Girl: What the?!
Sonic goes down and goes for a kick, but she blocks it with the ground as a big smoke happened.
Misaka: Well? Do you feel like telling us what we want to know yet?
Sonic: Yeah.
Girl: I get it. You two weren't giving me your all on that first attack. And that blast, you missed me on purpose, is that it?
Misaka: That's right. Now, be a good girl and-
Girl: Screw you! I'm not beaten just yet! If you call yourself a esper, then give me your best!
Sonic: Wait, Misaka, don't.
That's not something I'd mind doing.
Sonic: Misaka, what are you doing?
Misaka: Okay, I'll take you up on that.
Kuroko teleports to where Sonic and Misaka are.
Kuroko: Sissy! Wait!
Misaka: Yeah, I know.
Sonic, Kuroko: No, you do not!
Misaka's electricity took out the power.
In Uiharu's room:
Saten was cleaning Uiharu's back.
Saten: Uiharu, don't you want to become a high level esper? Like Misaka, and Shirai, or as strong like Sonic?
Uiharu: Well, nothing beats having a higher ability level, and it would leave me sitting pretty when it comes time for academic advancement.
Saten: Sure, and if we wanted a normal school life, we can always get that outside here. Lots of people come to Academy City because they're enamored of esper powers, right? I wonder what my ability was, myself, and what kind of power I have hidden inside me. I couldn't sleep the night before I came here, I was so excited. And then, on my first System Scan, they told me, "You have absolutely no talent. You're a Level 0." It made me feel like, "Aww..." To be honest, it got me down.
Uiharu: I know how you feel. I don't have much of an ability level, myself. But working together with Kuroko, and playing around together with you, I enjoy every day. I mean, if I hadn't come here, I never would have been able to meet all of you. I think it was meaningful for me to come to Academy City, if only because of that.
Saten: Uiharu...
Saten goes and tickles Uiharu.
Saten: Oh, you say the most adorable things! As a reward, I'll sponge down your whole body for you!
Uiharu: Saten! I can do the areas! I can reachl by myself!
All of a sudden, the power goes off.
Uiharu: Heh? A blackout?
In a alleyway:
Kuroko: This is why we told you to wait!
Misaka: How was I supposed to know that there was something like this around here?!
Sonic: This is gonna go on forever.
The girl was still in that alleyway where the ground was broken.
Girl: I guess I loss.
The next day:
Misaka: What a bummer. We ended up without any information.
Sonic: We'll find out soon enough.
Kuroko teleports behind Sonic and Misaka.
Kuroko: We have a new problem.
Sonic: Huh?
In the hospital:
Misaka: Kaitabi Hatsuya is unconscious?
Kuroko: I don't know all the details, but he suddenly passed out while Antiskill was questioning him.
They all see the doctors in front of them.
Kuroko: I am Kuroko, with Judgement. What's his condition?
Doctor: We are doing everything we can, but he shows no signs of regaining consciousness.
Misaka: Um, earlier, I clocked him good and hard in the face...
Doctor: Oh, he doesn't present any significant head trauma. For that matter, we didn't find anything wrong with him anywhere.
Sonic: Then how did he get unconscious?
Kuroko: So, your saying it was unexpected?
Doctor: There is one other unusual thing; as of this week, we've had patients with the same symptoms brought in here, one after the next. I hate to have to admit it, but this is beyond the capabilities of this hospital and it's staff, so I called in two outside specialists in cerebrophysiology.
They heard the footsteps of two people coming with their lab coats.
Woman: Sorry to keep you waiting.
Eggman: We've received a request from the Mizuho Systems Hospital Director.
Kiyama: I'm Kiyama Harumi.
Eggman: And I'm Dr. Eggman.
Misaka: Huh?
Doctor: Thanks for coming.
Misaka: It's you.
Sonic: E-Eggman!
TO BE CONTINUED!!!
