By the time I post this, Sonic 2 movie is still in theaters, so I managed to complete a "What if" within the time a movie was running.

Last time we left off on this What if...

Maria had managed to work with Silver to undo the damage in the timeline and wipe Solaris from existence all together.

You'd think with all of this happening that she would be done with all troubles...

...but whoever is with Shadow is bound to find danger anyways.

Unleashed

I forgot to mention that Maria had grown a bit when 06 had come around since she was no longer in stasis for 50 years.

While Maria was never given an age in the games, Sonic X claimed she was 12 years old around the time of incident, so her body was that of girl entering her teenage years.

I say "was" because a year or so passed between 06 and Heroes, so she likely could be 13 or 14 years old by 06, maybe even 15 years if it took longer for Mephiles' release.

(I mean did you really think EVERYTHING in the Sonic games happened in a year? No! Don't go thinking Sonic is like Ash where he somehow stays the same age no matter how long his adventures go!)

What I'm trying to say is that Maria probably hit puberty at some point, with the only family there to help her through it being Shadow.

Maria usually educated herself with Shadow and Tails' help since they didn't want to attract the attention of the public school with the confusion that she was 50+ years old.

Though Maria and Shadow did have to go to a nearby town often to get more food and supplies, which meant Maria could interact with other humans after years of isolation.

Who knows? Maybe she may get more than friends from here on out.

Since Eggman was still in prison during 06, even when it was wiped from the timeline, there was less trouble for Sonic and friends to stop.

For several years both the human world and Mobian world were in peaceful times with no villains around...

...but peace NEVER lasts forever.

Metal had still gained enough power and resources to attack the prison and free Eggman, bringing him back to his base.

Yeah...he's back!

As soon as Eggman is back, he looks through all data Metal had gathered going around the world so he could come up with a plan.

Last time he was leading, Shadow turned against him, stopped him from using the Eclipse Cannon and brought him into custody.

How was he going to match against his grandfather's creation helping Sonic?

He eventually discovers some ancient carvings that give whereabouts of ancient temples connected with the temples of day and night.

It's here that he eventually finds the Gaia manuscripts that tell him about the power of a dangerous being.

Just like in the beginning of Unleashed, Sonic shows up to fight Eggman, turns Super to destroy nearly everything and gets lured into the trap.

Eggman drains the energy from the Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic before blasting it all onto the planet below.

Everyone on the surface below feels the ground shake as the continents break apart, forming like floating islands surrounding a magma core.

Dark tendrils come out from the cracks as a colossal being rises from it.

Dark Gaia has just been unleashed onto the world!

Sonic is ejected from space as a Werehog just like in the original and lands on Chip.

As everything is going on, Shadow and Maria feel and see what's going on, not sure what to make of the situation.

The dark hedgehog decides to contact Tails on an update of what's happening, soon figuring out hours later about Dark Gaia, Sonic's new form and Chip.

Shadow realizes this is really just another adventure that Sonic has under control, but he couldn't help but feel something is off.

Most of Sonic's adventures go okay, until it gets about halfway and Shadow calls Sonic about an emergency.

It turns out that Maria is possessed by Dark Gaia's minions during Sonic's trip in Spagonia or Holoska, creeping out a new friend of her's and Shadow.

Sonic and Chip arrive and use the camera on Maria, with Shadow there to help fight.

The fight to free Maria is the most difficult exorcism in the story and wears out Sonic and Shadow by the end.

Shadow offers to go along with Sonic on the rest of the temples and deal with Eggman, finding it personal now that the doctor was the reason Maria was possessed.

Chip thinks Shadow is a bit scary at first due his whole edgy first impression, but he soon grows used to him being the way he is.

Most of the Gaia temples actually go by even swifter with Shadow there to assist with the boss fights and practically demolishing the giant monsters.

In fact, the Egg Dragoon nearly gets one-hit KO'ed by Shadow and Werehog Sonic near the end, but it was really no match for them either way.

When it comes time to fight Dark Gaia, Super Sonic and Super Shadow team up to beat the monster, blasting the eyes and other weaknesses with everything they had.

Unfortunately, Shadow didn't have enough energy left after the fight to help get Chip to the surface with them, having to face the fact he was gone now.

It's unknown to me if Maria would really be in the rest of the games.

You see....Sonic's creator recently came up with his "Two Worlds" theory where there's a Human world and a Mobian world to explain why humans and Mobians are never seen together as populations.

With Maria being a human, I have no idea if she would stay in the human world or go to the Mobian world with Shadow.

Colors and Lost World don't give details as to which planet Sonic and team are on.

Forces is clearly in the Mobian world since all of the Resistance members are animals.

And Frontiers has not answered which world it's in.

This is why I don't like the "Two Worlds" theory because I have to deal with the confusion of both worlds.

But let's assume the rest of the games happen on Sonic's world, so what would happen then?

Maria might leave with Shadow to live there after finding the human world was a little pressuring.

Around Unleashed, Maria was dating a human boy, but I don't know if said date would move to the Mobian world with her or not.

Let's proceed though...

Colors

I'm going with the DS version on this one, which has the other characters as side missions.

Maria replaces Omega at the Asteroid Coaster and gives Sonic a mission, then later meets up with Shadow to give the 3rd mission for the planet.

Turns out she was up here because her date wanted to have a special occasion together since the park was in space.

Generations

At the time of Sonic's birthday, we learn that Maria's boyfriend proposed to her, making her engaged.

When the Time Eater showed up, Maria was taken into the erased timeline where Sonic met Shadow.

Maria and Rouge could only be restored once Sonic defeated Shadow in a recreation of their first encounter.

Maria is also present at the end to encourage Sonic and Classic Sonic to win.

Lost World

Maria and Shadow stay absent, leaving this part of the story unchanged.

After Generations and building up towards Lost World, Maria married her fiancée and got pregnant with a child.

Like I said before, Shadow immediately turning against Eggman upon release forced the doctor to plan longer whenever he invades the world, meaning there's bigger gaps in time whenever he launches an attack.

Maria gives birth to a little girl, having her mother's very eyes that Shadow had known since his beginning.

I couldn't decide if she should be called Hope as a reference to her comic book counterpart or Rosey in recognition of Amy being a potential godmother.

For now I'll stick with Hope so it'll be easy to spot her in this page.

Hope not only has a healthy relationship with her parents, especially her mother, but she loves her Uncle Shadow too.

Shadow enjoys whatever time he gets with Hope, feeling this was his chance to help raise someone since he doubted anyone would have a child with him.

Eggman is assumed dead for years after Lost World, no one any the wiser to his next big scheme.

Episode Shadow

When Shadow was trapped in the illusion caused by Infinite, Hope had managed to try to contact him, despite interference making it difficult.

Unfortunately, Hope and Maria lost complete contact with Shadow after he managed to escape the illusion, assuming he was going underground to find out how to beat Infinite.

Forces

Maria and Hope stay with the main body of the Resistance after Sonic is defeated by Infinite.

While Hope handles the small jobs, Maria helps in the infirmary and working systems at the base.

The two girls refuse to believe Shadow betrayed everyone and sided with Eggman, knowing this wasn't like him at all.

Maria comes to the conclusion Eggman must have found a way to make duplicates of Shadow in quick demand, either being robots or lifelike illusions.

Hope also helped Tails out with fixing Omega and reprogramming him to their side, figuring this was the only robot other than Metal Sonic to cause trouble, so it made sense to use it against Eggman.

When Classic Sonic arrives, Tails and Hope travel with him to meet up with the Resistance to take down Eggman.

From here on out, Forces mostly stays the same, except with Maria and Hope as members of the Resistance.

When the war is over, Maria can finally relax with her daughter and live out the rest of her life in peace....

...or can she?

Since Sonic Frontiers hasn't come out yet at the day I post this, I can't continue this What if.

Maybe if someone wants an extension of it into the IDW comics, I might could do that here or make an IDW edition What if book.
