Sonic X Racer!Reader - @_A_Proud_Fangirl_

It was a bright, sunny day. Clouds speckled the blue sky, moving lazily away from the small house in the hill. Birds were zipping between the few trees that surrounded the lone house, singing their soulsongs and playing in the cool breeze that rustled the trees. All was peaceful around the building; all was quiet and calm.

A (f/c) (a/t) was currently at work in her workshop, tinkering away at her most recent project. She was in such a deep focus that the world around her had disappeared. If anyone walked into her little workshop, they could take anything, and she wouldn't be none the wiser until she was done. Her (e/c) eyes moved over her invention, her tongue stuck out in concentration.

As she was working, her phone went off. The (a/t) didn't respond, but a robotic arm did. It moved over the table and to the phone, answering the call for her. Speaker activated immediately, but she didn't react to the male's voice that spoke.

"Hey (Y/N)." It was none other than Sonic the Hedgehog, "How's the project going? You think you'll have it ready by this afternoon?"

"Mhm..." She mumbled, and the robotic arm moved the phone closer to her. A chuckle came from the phone and her ear twitched, finally raising her eyes. She blinked, before picking the phone up, "Sonic? Why are you calling me?"

"Ah, I caught you in robot mode then." Sonic said, a knowing tone to his voice, "Sorry for bothering you."

"No no it's fine." The (a/t) said, dropping the tool she held in her hand in embarrassment. There was a clatter and she jumped, reaching down and picking it up again, Sonic chuckled at the sound, "What's up?"

"Was just wondering if you'd be ready to race this afternoon." The hedgehog said, he sounded keen, the (a/t)'s ears perked in interest, "I've got nothing planned today, so I figured we could race again."

(Y/N)'s cheeks turned a light pink at the mention of racing and she leant on the bench, "You're that keen to race me huh?"

"Hell yeah." The hedgehog said, "You're like, the most fun to race. Shadow's too moody and no one else will race me. I know you've been working on another speedy invention, so I was wondering if you'd wanna test it out today."

The (a/t) smiled warmly, placing the tool down and leaning on the bench. A sort of happiness came from hearing Sonic say those words. She was the most fun to race. And him acknowledging what she was working on... The girl had a major crush on the blue hero and hearing him sound so excited made her extremely fluttery.

"Yeah, I think I'll have it ready. What time were you thinking?" She asked, doing her best to keep her tone calm.

"Probably just before sunset." Sonic said, "Is that enough time for you?"

"You bet. I'll see you then." She then hung up, placing the phone down. The (a/t) let out a dreamy sigh, facing the bench and staring down at her newest creation.

She loved racing Sonic, it was something the two really connected with. She would make some sort of contraption to help her move quickly, and Sonic would help her test it out with racing. Every time he'd win, but the (a/t) would learn more and more with each race. This device she was working on was going to be different. She could feel it in her bones.

(Y/N) smiled, rubbing her cheek self-consciously as she realised she was daydreaming already. Winning against Sonic would be the best thing in the world, finally besting the hero at the thing he was greatest at. And mechanically at that.

She then turned her attention to the rest of the workshop, looking at all her failed attempts. A hoverboard that had no power, it floated but wouldn't move without being pushed. A bike that had been inspired from Big Hero Six, it was a flop as well. She had invented a jetpack that had nearly done the trick but blew up just before the end of a race. The (a/t) had even made a go kart, but that also ran out of fuel, and adding a larger fuel tank would slow the contraption down.

No, this time she was sure her invention would work. So she got back to them, tinkering with them for the rest of the day. The hours ticked by quickly, the (a/t) unaware of the time as she had been sucked back into her fully focused state.

(Y/N) didn't even notice Sonic's arrival, the hedgehog having run around the house and straight into the workshop. He spotted her still hard at work on the skates and stopped himself from walking much further. Instead, he smiled and leant on the doorway, watching her work. The last thing he wanted to do was break her motion twice in one day.

The hedgehog also liked watching her work. Seeing her so passionately putting something together, especially considering the cause, made him happy for the (a/t). She was in her element here, and out in the fields racing him. It's the only time he saw her the most happy.

(Y/N) finished with her work, glancing at her watch her (e/c) eyes widened as she realised the time before she turned to the door. Sonic raised a hand, giving her a small wave and the (a/t) jumped a foot in the air.

"S-Sonic!" She stammered, "You're already here! How... How long have you been waiting...?"

She held her arm and Sonic walked over, giving her a reassuring smile, "Not too long, besides I'd rather you finish your invention over rushing it."

The (a/t)'s cheeks warmed and she turned her head away. Sonic smiled, before turning away and glancing out a window, "The sun's starting to get low. Wanna show me what you made before we race?"

(Y/N)'s ears perked and she nodded eagerly. The blue hedgehog was always happy to ask about her inventions, since she would ramble so much about them. He knew it was something she really cared a lot about, and he was more than happy to be an ear so she could show everything off.

The (a/t) smiled and held up a pair of rollerblades. They were a simple dark grey with a bright green stipe that followed the shape of the shoe, making them look like 'L's and laces that were the same green colour. The blades looked relatively normal, aside from the thrusters on the side.

The thrusters were small enough that they wouldn't cause damage to the shoes, whether it be damage from heat or weight. The girl had thought of everything she could to make sure these were the perfect pair of racing blades. The wheels which were covered with a metal box and some bright green straps that looked like they would wrap up the leg, most likely to be more secure.

Sonic's emerald eyes instantly snapped to the rollerblades and he let out a whistle, stepping over some debris and gently taking them from the girl. He turned them over in his hands, making sure not to bump anything, before a smirk took hold of his muzzle,

"So, you're sure you're gonna beat me in these? They won't blow up in your face like the jetpack?" He teased, handing the blades back to the (a/t).

"Nope, I've regulated the insulation, plus the material is heat resistant just to be safe." (Y/N) said, spinning one of the small wheels, "Considering these are made out of nylon, they'll last a lot better under the heat."

"Great!" Sonic said, "Now, I've seen rollerblades in grass, how are you gonna avoid that?"

"The speed alone should be enough, however I've also put that metal box around the wheels to stop any sticks or grass from getting caught. Whatever gets under that small gap will most likely be destroyed by the speed of the spinning wheels." (Y/N) smiled proudly.

"And what makes you so sure these will work better than everything else?" Sonic asked, tilting his head.

"Because I've taken all the other faults into consideration, and I've done me best to work with the knowledge I've picked up from my failures. I'm certain I'll finally beat you with these."

"Well you definitely sound confident." Sonic smiled, throwing his hand over his shoulder, thumb at the door, "So, lets go test them out then yeah?"

With that, the two headed outside. Once they were in front of the small house, (Y/N) sat down and started putting the rollerblades on. She pulled the longer straps up over her legs, making sure the shoes were, in fact, secure, before Sonic helped her to her feet. A soft breeze blew through her (h/c) hair, and she smiled, moving it from her eyes and glancing at Sonic.

"Where to?" The (a/t) asked.

"My place." Sonic said, "That way you can stay over for dinner."

(Y/N)'s cheeks turned pink at the informal invitation, before giving him a nod, "Decent route. Guess we'll see who gets there first."

Sonic smirked, before leaning down on his hands and knee, "Ready?"

The (a/t) nodded and got into her position as well, she pulled some goggles over her eyes to protect them since she wasn't as accustom to the speed. As soon as Sonic said go, the two took off. (Y/N) clicked her tongue and the thrusters came to life, helping her zip past the blue hedgehog. Sonic blinked in surprise, before an evil smirk spread over his muzzle and he sped up, catching up to her quickly.

The wind was strong, pushing against the two racers as they speed through the valley. The (a/t) glanced over once a blue blur entered her field of vision, and she chuckled to herself. So he was able to keep up with this pace, no surprise there. But he had no clue what was in store for him.

(Y/N) clicked her tongue again and the thrusters kicked into full gear. She blasted off, the scenery around her becoming nothing but a blue and green blur, creating a sort of tunnel vision. Sonic watched her take off, impressed by the speed. He started working his way on catching up to her, this time not as easily. The (a/t) really had gone all out on these rollerblades, she really wanted to beat him.

Finally, the house came into view, and Sonic was once again next to (Y/N). Both had a look of determination, Sonic not wanting to lose his title of fastest thing alive, and (Y/N) wanting to prove mechanics are just as good as genetics. The two glanced each other, throwing the other a smirk. Now it was a game of chicken, who would slow down the earliest. Sonic knew exactly when was the safest to slow down to win the race, the (a/t) admittedly had no clue and was waiting for Sonic to make his move first.

And then the blue hedgehog started falling back. (Y/N) reacted as quickly as the hedgehog dropped from her vision, trying her best to brake. There was a squeak as her hidden mechanic tried stopping the wheels, but then there was a click, a clatter of metal. Her (e/c) eyes widened in the horrific realisation as she didn't slow down, but instead rocketed past the house.

Did her brakes just... Break?

She glanced down at her blades to see a small metal pole sticking out from under the walls around the wheels and her stomach dropped. The speed of the wheels broke the brakes. They weren't strong enough to fight the friction. This isn't going to end well.

"Sonic!" The girl yelled, having to keep moving, losing her balance at this speed would result in more than a few broken bones.

The blue hedgehog was by her side in a flash, glancing at her, "What's wrong?"

"The brakes!" The (a/t) said, giving him a worried look, "They broke!"

Sonic's emerald eyes widened and he looked around at the area, "Shit... Just hold on! I'll think of something."

The girl nodded, turning back to watch where she was going. Any confident competitiveness from before was long out the window, now she was terrified. She should have tested the strength of the brakes before testing out the rest of the blades. A sloppy mistake for an inventor, and all because she was excited to race Sonic again.

The two zoomed over the land, causing flowers and leaves to go flying into the air, the grass behind them flattened to the ground. (Y/N) kept her eyes in front of her, making sure to avoid any small things that could trip her up.

But then the city started to rise in the distance, tall buildings growing before their very eyes. The (a/t)'s eyes widened again as she started to freak out. At this rate they were going to crash into the city, more than just (Y/N) were going to get hurt. Sonic had better hurry up with a plan.

"Alright!" Sonic yelled over the wind, "I have an idea, but I need you to trust me!"

"Trust me, I do!" The (a/t) yelled back, the buildings shining in the setting sun.

"Great! I need you to trip on something for me!" Sonic said.

"What?! Sonic do you know how fast we're going?!" (Y/N) glanced at him.

"I know it sounds scary, but don't worry. I'll catch you!"

(Y/N) lifted her head, watching as the buildings grew wider, taller. She could see lights starting to turn on in the skyscrapers. She closed her eyes, giving a simple nod and holding her feet flat to the ground. It didn't take long for the (a/t) to hit a rock, maybe a stick, before she went flying through the air.

There was a loud bang behind her, and as she came crashing to the ground... Arms wrapped around her instead. The wind was still ripping through her hair, her clothes, but she never collided with the buildings. Instead, it felt like she was turning.

Finally opening her eyes, she saw Sonic staring straight ahead. He was holding her close; the city was now shrinking behind them. The girl felt herself relax immediately, however also mentally slapping herself across the face for forgetting such an important thing. Sonic glanced down at her with a slight smirk,

"Well, at least nothing exploded this time." He joked, and she cracked a small smile in return.

"I guess so..." She said, though the (a/t) couldn't shake the disappointed feeling she felt towards herself. She rested her head on Sonic's shoulder, staring at the blades. Such an important thing, how could she forget...?

"Hey, at least no one got hurt." Sonic said, slowing down as he reached his house, "We handled it in the safest way possible. I noticed you weren't turning a lot during that race, something to do with the wheels?"

"The design... Has flaws."

Sonic nodded and set her down now. The still spinning wheels came to an abrupt stop, and both could see the metal under the walls had started glowing a slight orange. It had gotten very close to melting.

The (a/t) let out a sigh and sat in the grass outside, pulling the rollerblades off and dropping them to the ground. Sonic tilted his head at her, kneeling in front of the girl with a look of concern. He glanced at the wheeled shoes, before taking a seat in front of her.

"Are you okay?" He asked, "That was a pretty scary experience."

"An experience that didn't have to happen if I did things properly." (Y/N) hugged her knees, still staring at the shoes, "I should have tested the brakes, I didn't even think of it. I was so caught up at the thought of racing you again that I... I got sloppy... I endangered a lot of people just then."

Sonic sat there, watching as the girl sulked. He let out a sigh, glancing up as the sun disappeared behind the mountains.

"Accidents happen." Sonic said, leaning back on his hands, "What's important is that no one was hurt, and you'll learn from this. Right?"

The (a/t) was silent for a moment before her eyes moved up to him. She gave a silent nod and Sonic smiled, climbing to his feet, holding his hand out to her,

"Besides, you were really fast. You definitely got a lot closer to winning today."

"You caught me quickly after I lost control."

"You were in danger, I tend to run a lot faster when one of my friends is in danger. Call it motivation." The hedgehog shrugged. (Y/N) smiled and nodded, taking his hand.

"I also heard you break the sound barrier. You don't do that often do you?"

"Only when absolutely necessary. Like saving someone." He pulled her to her feet, not letting her hand go. The (a/t) blushed at that comment, "But really, will you be okay?"

"Yeah." (Y/N) nodded, squeezing his hand slightly, she didn't want him to let go... And he didn't. She felt better almost immediately, "I'll be alright. Just making mental notes on the faults I made today."

"Alright, just don't beat yourself up over it. No one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes." Sonic smiled once again, "But for now, it's getting dark. Fancy joining Tails and I for dinner?"

The (a/t) felt her cheeks turn red again, and she nodded. Sonic gave her the thumbs up, and still holding her hand, lead her inside. (Y/N) stared at their entwined hands, a smile spreading wide over her muzzle. Sonic was right, she'll learn from this and she won't make the same mistake again. He really knew how to make her feel better.

AHHHHHHHHHH OKAY FINALLY THIS IS DONE. I really had a lot of trouble writing this oneshot request, I had to restart it like... Twice. And it wasn't until last night that I really got it to work, got into writing it. I just finished it now (literally updating it straight away since it's Monday) and I'm finally happy with how it turned out.

I hope the ending isn't too short, as I had just reached page 6 and it became mostly dialogue so I decided to wrap it up there. But I hope it was still good and I hope the person who requested this enjoys it!

That's all for now, see you guys next week!

Haven Out!!!
