I've Been There

When the wind blows too hard and you feel a storm inside,
When the shutters bang and startle, when the sea's too rough a ride,

When you feel all alone and there's no one that you knew

I want you to remember that I've been there too.

I've been there when the wind blew me about

I've been there when the tide just took me out

I've been stranded without a single friend

But the thought of you sustained me past the end.

In the morning sun still rises high

When it's over, clouds still pass you by

When all the trouble passes, too

I will still be thinking about you.

So remember this when times are hard

Remember, after your last trial

How you looked back and found a shard

Of gold among the wreckage cruel

And keep a little story to remind you

A loving Father watches above you

Family in Heaven worries about you

And here below, others wait for you; I'm one of those who worry, too.

Take the gold, and put it in your pack.

Share that gold when you see that others lack.

When another hears your story, it may have a familiar sound, when there's trials, there's always someone else around, and when you share your gold, perhaps a friend you've found

Until I come to you.

Until, my love, it comes to you.

The wind won't carry gold away

My love is gold, like gold will stay

When once again, our wings will play,

On gentle breezes, flowers of May

Follow the April storms, that's their way.

And if you keep the story for the next rainy day,

The wind will take your story, to spread the gold and pay.

Every life's a story, and every thread is trueIn the ears of one who's heard it, and saw the sky's still blue

A trial's a bit of training for the comfort we imbue

Upon a friend who's straining the boat to hold onto,

Upon a friend who's fainting, when trials obscure the hue,

Upon a friend who's starving, the meal that's made for two.

I've been there when the wind blew me about

I've been there when the tide just took me out

I've been stranded without a single friend

But the thought of you sustained me past the end.

In the morning sun still rises high

When it's over, clouds still pass you by

When all the trouble passes, too

I will still be thinking about you.

Remember, after your last trial

Of gold among the wreckage cruel

And keep a little story to remind you

I looked up, and I didn't hear cries across the commons. Marlie held Queen Tamin in her arms, and she looked up. "O, Amber, your comfort is well here! When Le cries, many fall unwell. See him? His friend Asha comforts him now."— from Am Not, an unpublished story I'm rewriting.

White Bird, White Birds is a fictional musical that plays a part in Amber's backstory.

She went with her parents to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta to see it when someone fired a gun and the crowd trampled them. Amber remembers the music in that show and how it affected her that night, but these songs are the only ones she can perform. She can't learn new ones. But in them, she has a special Gift. The title, Am Not, refers to all the things she feels she is not, after a devastating head injury. Amber connects with all the injured Zheien in this little community, many of whom have memory problems like her and need their healers near.
