2 - The Competition

Sam walked into Dean's house, knowing where he'd find him. He walked into Dean's music room, set up with this fancy sound editing system and a mic for when he recorded songs. Dean was sitting on the chair, focused on the acoustic guitar in his hands.

Sam sat down in another chair, listening as Dean played the tune of a song, recognizing it as one of Heaven's Grace's songs.

Dean stopped playing and looked up at Sam. "Hey Sammy."

"It's sounding good," Sam said.

"Still needs work," Dean muttered. "It has to be perfect."

"You're your own worst critic Dean," Sam said, leaning back. "Play what you have so far."

Dean nodded and started playing the song. Sam listened carefully, comparing it to the original in his mind. Dean didn't sing along yet, but hummed the tune softly.

"Not bad," Sam said. "Your timing is out in a few places."

"I know, I'm working on it," Dean said. "Do you think I should record layers over for this one?"

"No, keep it as one," Sam said. "It's more impressive when you do that if it still sounds awesome."

"So it just needs to sound good," Dean muttered. "No pressure there."

"Sing it this time," Sam said. Dean glared slightly but started playing the song again.

The song, for the record, was called Perdition. It told the story of one who was trapped in a bad place, but was rescued by what looked like an angel. There were many people who made really deep meaningful theories about the lyrics, but Dean liked the more obvious one.

He sang through the song, hitting all the notes perfectly, before finishing it and looking up at Sam.

"You know, you should change it around a bit," Sam said. "Like, some of the notes. Go high where it's supposed to go low or something."

"I guess I could..." Dean said. "But I like how it is..."

"Well, your style of singing is also different from...Gabriel, his name is Gabriel right?" Dean rolled his eyes but nodded. "It's different, so you should sing it differently."

"Yeah you're right," Dean said. "Okay I'll try and figure this out then..." Sam could tell that Dean was going into that zone where he's focused, so he walked out of the room to find food in the kitchen.

Sam was currently in college, doing...well he wasn't really sure. He started with law but gave up on that. Psychology was fun for a bit, so was art, but Sam couldn't really find a passion in anything. Right now he was kind of stuck on what to do.

Dean was a mechanic who did music on the side. Sam thought he could do so much more with the musical talent he had, because damn could Dean sing when he tried. But Dean didn't have the best confidence when it came to his singing.

Sam heard Dean singing in the other room, changing the tune of the bridge and smiled. He was confident that Dean would win this competition.

"Alright, we gotta get ready," Michael said, shoving the sleeping Lucifer off a couch. Lucifer hit the ground and glared at Michael.

"How could you betray me like this?" Lucifer asked.

"Easy, I just had to push," Michael said. Luci pouted before standing up. He walked off to get clothes from his suitcase, bumping Michael's shoulder with his as he passed. They always did this, just small touches and points of contact between them throughout the day. Neither commented on it, it'd just always been that way.

But you know what, let's have a flashback to when they first met.

Michael was playing drums in the schools music room, headphones on to hear the rest of the song. He didn't hear someone else walk into the room, drawn by the sound of drums.

Michael jumped as suddenly there was a boy standing in front of him. Blond hair, blue eyes, tattoos and piercings.

"You," the boy said. "Want to join my band?"

"I uh..." Michael said. "Maybe? A bit of context would be nice?"

The boy blinked. "Right. My name's Lucifer Novak, I have a band with my younger brother Gabriel. We need a drummer and no one around here is good enough."

"But...I am?"

"Yep," Lucifer said, smiling brightly. "Just then, you sounded uh..." Michael could've sworn he saw Lucifer blush just then. "You sounded amazing." Michael smirked slightly as Lucifer's voice grew sheepish.

"Okay fine," Michael said. "You have to show me what you guys are like first though."

"Great!" Lucifer said. "I'll bring Gabe here now, we can try something." Lucifer all but vanished from the room, appearing about a minute later with a short golden haired boy in tow. He picked up a guitar that was in the room and started tuning it quietly.

"What just happened and how did I get here?" Gabe asked as Michael got up from the drums and walked to sit closer to them.

"This is Michael," Lucifer said, putting his hand on Michael's shoulder. Michael stared at the hand. "He plays drums. We need a drummer. He wants to hear us play."

"Okay okay fine," Gabe said, and Lucifer started playing a song. Gabe started singing along, and Michael was entranced by them.

"So?" Lucifer asked when they were finished.

Michael tried to act nonchalant despite his excitement. "Sure, I'll join you." Lucifer's expression brightened and he pulled Michael into an unexpected hug. Michael blinked before slowing hugging Lucifer back.

Gabe stood off to the side watching with confusion because since when did Luci hug people...

Now back to the current world.

Of course, Michael never realized that it wasn't normal for Luci to be so touchy, because Luci was always that way with him.

Meanwhile, Castiel getting ready for the concert.

Cas took off his beloved trenchcoat and found some of his stage clothes. Ripped jeans, a plain black shirt and the wing jacket. He spiked his hair up, he put on the eyeliner and the blue eye shadow because it matched his eyes...and then he looked like a different person.

"I want to see fans react to the process of you changing your appearance," Gabe said, leaning on the doorway to the bathroom. "It'd be funny."

"No one must know," Cas said dramatically as he walked past Gabe.

"Hey you know we're getting entries for that comp thing already," Gabe said. "There are quite a few good ones out there."

"I guess we'll see," Cas said, shrugging. It'd been a while since he'd seen a really amazing cover of one of their songs.

~~

A week passed pretty quickly and before they knew it Dean was setting up to record his cover of the song.

"Are you sure it's okay?" Dean asked.

"Yes Dean, it's really good," Sam said, helping with the camera. "Just play it well okay? And feel the song or whatever it is musicians do."

"Great advise," Dean said, rolling his eyes. "Just say when." Sam pressed the record button and gave Dean the thumbs up. Dean then began to play the song.

He had changed it around a bit like Sam said. Added some high notes in the singing, played the chords in more interesting ways. He also used a stomp box, something he could tap with his foot while playing to create something similar to a drum beat.

Pretty much, it sounded damn awesome.

Sam started clapping at the end of the song because it was the first time he'd heard Dean sing it that well.

"Told you you could do it," Sam said, smiling.

"Sam are you still recording?" Dean asked, glancing at the camera. Sam made a little meep sound and fumbled with the camera before turning it off. Dean was quiet for a second. "We're leaving that in just for that sound you just made."

"What Dean noooo," Sam whined. Dean just chuckled, taking the camera from him.

~~

"We've gone through all the entries and found all the ones worth watching," Crowley said. "For example that guy who clearly didn't even know the song and was probably doing it for his girlfriend."

"Wow harsh," Gabe said. "Right then, give us the rest." Crowley brought up the playlist on the Tv, and gave Gabe the remote before sitting down. Luci, Michael and Cas were also sitting there, they were all going to watch them together.

"Okay, here we go," Gabe said, hitting play.

The first person to choose a winner was Gabriel. He'd chosen a redhead girl, who really did look like a nerdy fangirl, but in an awesome way. Crowley nodded and noted this down, saying the girls name was Charlie. She'd only used simple piano chords but the singing made up for it.

Next Lucifer chose a pair, a girl called Jo with her friend Ash playing guitar. Ash had seemed really into it which appeared to amuse Luci.

Michael chose an asian kid called Kevin, who'd made a badass piano cover. Because when piano covers are done well, they sound amazing.

Which left Cas to choose.

"Come on Cas, you don't like any of these?" Gabe asked.

"I mean they're good," Cas said. "But...I don't know."

"We're almost at the end of the list," Gabe said. He clicked on the next one. "Oh hey Cas, this guys singing your song."

Cas looked at the screen as he heard the beginning notes of the song he'd written, Perdition. And this guy looked like a gift from god, Cas would definitely like to grip him tight and raise him from perdition.

But then he started singing. Even Gabe stopped and stared at the screen, because this guy was good. This guy was really good. Add in the guitar skill, the stomp box that was obviously made to echo through the room, and the high notes...

The guy had changed the tune a bit, changing one note to a higher one and holding it for longer. Which was just impressive.

And then he stopped playing and there was clapping in the video.

"Told you you could do it," a voice said from behind the camera. The guy singing glanced at the camera with amusement.

"Sam are you still recording?" he asked and there was this adorable high pitched meep sound from behind the camera before the video cut out.

"I wanna see who was behind the camera," Gabe said.

"He wins," Cas said. "What's his name?"

"Dean," Crowley said. "Dean Winchester."

"Dean wins," Cas said.

"Cassie, looking a bit sure of yourself there," Luci said, smirking. "You like the guy?"

"You all have to admit he's an amazing singer," Cas pointed out, and Gabe, Luci and Michael all nodded in agreement.

"Right let's watch through the rest and see if we change our minds," Gabe said, before playing the rest of the entries.

~~

Dean fell off his chair when he got the message. The message saying that he'd won the competition and that he would get to meet the band.

He texted Sam immediately before going to read the rest of the details. The band was currently hanging out in LA, which is where Dean would have to go to meet them. Travelling costs were paid for as part of the prize, and he was allowed one person to travel with him.

"Sammy you're coming," Dean said, calling Sam up.

"I don't think I have a choice," Sam said. "Not that I'm complaining. Any chance I'll get to see them too?"

"I don't think so," Dean said. "But dude...I won?" Sam just smiled, feeling a swell of pride for his older brother.

"Of course you did," Sam said. "Now...think of this, you get to meet Angel." Dean's mind broke around about then. Because he was going to get to see Angel, alive and in person.

*is about to go to sleep* *writes a 2000 word chapter* ...oops?

Heh I think I'm gonna have fun with the song names in this...wonder what would happen if I actually tried to write lyrics for them. I might do that.

Also, here are real life things that I'm thinking of adding: karaoke night with Rich and Matt/Gabe and Michael. Louden Swain. Rob/Chuck singing Fare Thee Well. Jason Manns. That musical Felicia/Charlie was in.

Oh and I'm going to the Twelve Apostles in a week for a few days, should be fun :D ...Been there twice already but meh, it's really nice and peaceful and beaches.

*Gives everyone strawberries and cream* (I'd never had that before yesterday)
