18 - Castiel the Angel
"Dean have you heard from any of the Novak's today?" Sam asked from where he was sitting on his bed, looking at his phone to see if he had any messages from Gabriel, only to find nothing.
"Only a message from Gabriel telling me to be backstage by 6," Dean said. "He wants me to sing Perdition with Angel tonight."
"So he didn't say anything about Michael and Lucifer?" Sam asked worriedly. Dean just shook his head.
"The concerts still on so something must have been worked out," Dean replied. "Or they could be doing it without Michael, but they wouldn't do that." Sam sighed.
"I'm worried about how this is going to turn out," he said.
"Well what's the worst that could happen?" Dean said.
Hah. Poor clueless Dean.
~~
Dean walked through the empty arena and went backstage, the demons allowing him through easily. He found the rooms where all the band members were getting ready and walked in, immediately being able to feel the tension in the air.
Gabriel was pacing back and forth, arms folded and scowling slightly. Michael was sitting on the couch, leaning his elbows on his knees and looking down. Angel sat on the armrest of the couch, looking alarmingly emotionless. Lucifer sat on a chair lazily, a deep scowl set on his face.
Dean stood there for a moment before shaking his head. "You all look like shit. What the hell is wrong with you?" No one responded to Dean for a moment, before Angel sighed and walked over to him.
"You know things aren't exactly great between everyone," Angel muttered quietly, his voice oddly deep compared to what Dean was used to hearing from him. He sounded like Cas.
"Well yeah," Dean said. "But right now that isn't the point." Angel tilted his head in a way that was too much like Cas. Dean bit down on his tongue for snapping at Angel because of that. "You guys are about to do a concert. You're Heaven's Grace, you have thousands of fans lining up outside to see you. Are you really going to go out there and give them some half-assed performance because you've all got personal shit? They deserve better than that."
"It's not that easy Dean," Gabriel muttered. "They'll be able to tell there's something wrong."
"Then just act like there isn't for two hours," Dean said. "Don't ruin this for them. I'd be pissed off if I paid to see you guys and you spent the entire time glaring and not talking to each other."
"Sometimes I forget you were our fan first," Angel muttered. He looked so tired.
"No you know what, you're right Dean," Gabriel said. "We can't bring the fans into this too. Come on guys, we have to do this right."
"Fine," Luci muttered. Michael just looked up wearily, shadows evident beneath his eyes, and he just looked resigned. Angel nodded, despite not looking happy about it necessarily.
"Good now go make yourselves look presentable," Dean said. "Michael you look like death."
"Thanks," Michael said, rolling his eyes, but stood and walked off to another room, hopefully to get some makeup on. The other three started moving about as well, since they all did actually have stuff to do. As Angel went to walk past Dean, Dean grabbed onto his arm.
"Don't forget I said I need to talk to you," Dean said quietly, and Angel just nodded before continuing to walk away. Dean stood there for a few moments, before taking a shaky breath and clenching his fists. He'd wanted Angel to not have any idea what he was talking about, he wanted him to not know what Cas knew. But the evidence was piling up now, especially after Michael's speech where he'd slipped up.
Dean shook his head. Cas wouldn't...why would Cas lie to him?
~~
Gabe grabbed the mic and smiled, slipping into his onstage persona pretty easily. "How is everyone tonight?" Deafening cheers came in response. Gabe smirked a little. "Mind if we play a few songs for you?" The cheering came again. Gabe looked over at Angel standing at the keyboard, looking just as he always did. Michael was ready at the drums, looking just a bit tired. Luci was there with his guitar, and if he looked a bit grumpier than usual, no one noticed.
Gabe took a deep breath and gave a nod, and Michael gave the opening drum beat to the song.
~~
The concert was going pretty well. There hadn't been any drama or anything between them, though Lucifer wasn't being too nice. They only had one song left, and it was Perdition. Dean was supposed to come onstage for just this part.
"So I know you all seem to have accepted Dean Winchester as the other lead singer in Perdition," Gabriel said into the microphone. "So we invited him here with us." The audience screamed, and Dean walked onto the stage with a sheepish smile, waving at them. "So everyone, give it up for Dean and Angel!"
They all got through the song. Dean and Cas sang like they were meant for each other, which yeah they probably were. Dean loosened up on stage and at the end of the song had such a wide smile on his face.
And then Gabriel decided to be a little shit, because he was still pissed off at Castiel.
"So aren't these two cute?" Gabe said to the audience, smirking at the cheers he got in response. "Who here thinks they should kiss?" The response he got this time was even louder.
Angel's eyes went wide and he shook his head at Gabe, but Gabe just smirked at him almost evilly.
"Come on you guys, the audience demands it," Gabe said. Dean was staring down with wide eyes, not looking up at Angel, at Cas. "It's just one kiss, he won't mind." Dean knew Gabe was referring to Cas, but that didn't change the fact that there was a good possibility that Cas was standing right beside him.
"Dean?" Angel said quietly, off the mic so that only Dean would hear him. "We don't have to..."
Dean stepped forward, closing the distance between them. Angel didn't respond at first, obviously being surprised at the sudden movement, but then he pressed back against Dean, moving his lips against his.
Dean cut it off before they could get carried away. Angel stared at him with wide eyes, and Dean just glared back at him. Because Angel kissed like Cas did, and that was not something that could just be shaken off as twins. He had the same expression of shyness that Cas always had after he and Dean kissed each other.
The audience was cheering but Dean didn't hear any of it. He just turned and walked off stage, not even bothering to see anyone else's reaction.
Gabriel of course wrapped up the show, with a small satisfied smirk, and then Cas came running after Dean, finding him alone in one of the rooms where they did makeup.
"Dean, I'm so sorry," Cas said, still in the persona of Angel. "I don't know what was wrong with Gabriel, he knows you're dating Cas—"
"Shut up," Dean growled. He had his fists clenched and was staring at the ground, but looked up into Cas's eyes. "Just...shut up." Cas frowned, a small crease between his eyebrows as he watched Dean.
"Dean I—"
"Take off your makeup."
"I...what?"
"Just do it."
Cas gulped, but walked over to where there were some makeup removal wipes. He picked one up, looking back at Dean to see his determined glare. There was no way Cas could get out of this. So he slowly rubbed away the eyeshadow and the eyeliner, until he looked like Castiel again. Minus the hair and the clothes.
"Dean what's wrong?" Cas asked, still trying to play it off. He took a step towards Dean, eyes concerned. He didn't expect Dean to lunge out and grab his leather jacket roughly, pulling it off his shoulders, but he didn't even try to fight back.
"You lied to me," Dean said through gritted teeth, dropping the jacket on the floor and reaching his hands up to Cas's hair. He pressed against the gel, flattening Cas's hair down to its natural state. "Castiel."
"Dean..." Cas said, his voice so small and quiet. He seemed to shrink under Dean's gaze, shoulders rising and head tilting down, looking less and less like Angel by the second.
"Why?" Dean asked, his voice almost breaking on the word. "Why did you lie to me? This entire time."
"I never meant for it to go this far Dean I just—"
"You just what Cas? Thought you'd pretend you had a brother so you could what, mock me? This whole time you've known I've loved Angel, and you just let me talk about that to you when you knew that he was you?"
"Dean..."
"Was anything you said true? You're...you're a completely different person to who I thought you were Cas, how could you just lead me on like this?"
"Dean!"
Dean shut up, eyes going wide as Cas glared at him, eyes filling with tears.
"I never lied to you about anything other than that I wasn't Angel," Cas said. "Everything I told you, everything we did and everything we had, that was real Dean. I wasn't leading you on. I wanted you to like me for me, not for some musician you were already infatuated with. And I was going to tell you, I was planning on doing it last night and then Michael happened and I just..." Cas took a deep breath, ignoring the tear that was sliding down his cheek. "I thought you'd be understanding. Angel isn't a person, he's just some persona I take on stage. But if that's all you can see me as, then maybe this isn't going to work out after all." He turned away from Dean and walked out of the room, determined not to let Dean see him cry.
Dean stood alone in the room, staring after Cas, his eyes wide at everything Cas had just said. And too late did he realize that he'd said he loved Angel and not Cas. Not that they were at that point yet, but the idea was still there.
Gabriel chose that moment to walk into the room, seeing Dean standing there alone. "Deano. What's up?" He was smirking and acting like nothing was wrong, that he hadn't just forced him to kiss Cas on stage...Gabriel had known, they had all known.
Dean didn't hesitate in lunging forward and punching that stupid smirk off of Gabriel's face.
