Twenty-Five
Silence had trickled into the room after what Zephyria had said to Athanasia.
"So," Athanasia started to say, to help break the awkward silence. "Do you and Volrath have-" The Swedish demon trailed off. She wasn't sure why it was so hard to ask this.
"We-" Zephyria started to say, getting cut off, promptly afterward.
"...have a daughter?" Athanasia managed to finish what she was going to ask.
Zephyria nodded. "Yes. Yes we do."
Athanasia rose a jet black eyebrow. "Okay, so what does this daughter have to do with the job you had in mind for me?"
"Well," Zephyria paused before saying, "You might have noticed Volrath seems to know a little about her. I wanted to keep her a secret and keep him in the dark about it."
"So, where do I fit into this equation?" Athanasia inquired.
"Volrath knows about her now, so she's not safe where she's at." Zephyria swallowed. "I'm going to need you to take her some place safe."
"I could probably take her to-" Athanasia didn't get to finish her sentence.
"No. Don't tell me where she is," Zephyria insisted. She noted Athanasia's confused look. "As long as I know where she is and I'm stuck in here, she won't be safe."
"You don't want to know where she's at after you get out?" Athanasia asked.
Zephyria said, "Well, if I do get out, I'll find her, but right now it's best if I don't know her whereabouts."
"If? If you get out?" Athanasia pulled a face.
Zephyria swallowed once again. "Yeah. I doubt I'll ever get out of here. I'll be in here as long as Luka's on the run. It's fine by me though--he's safer that way." Her gaze drifted away as the Greek woman turned her head.
"Zeph," Athanasia breathed.
The Siren Queen seemed to ignore Satan's top general.
"Zeph," Athanasia said once again, repeating herself. She rose her hand to place it on Zephyria's cheek, tilting her head to face the demon again.
Zephyria placed a hand on Athanasia's, slowly meeting the demon's gaze once again.
Athanasia caressed the Siren Queen's cheek.
"Zeph, there's no if. It's a when. When you get out of here..." Athanasia explained.
Zephyria's white-ish silver gaze finally locked onto Athanasia's violet. "When?" She asked in a quiet, but somewhat still melodic voice.
"Yes. When," Athanasia paused before continuing. "You'll get out of here. I promise you. I will get you out. I swear on my mother's grave. I will, Zeph."
Athanasia's mother, Aðalbjörk, had been a high-rank demon--an Vexlian just like Athanasia and her younger brother, Hrafnúlfr. Aðalbjörk had been the mistress of many important men and women through-out history. She had used her influence to crush empires.
But, yet, even though she was that powerful, Aðalbjörk had still died a gruesome death, letting her soul get trapped within Xuviphas.
Athanasia mentally stuttered at the thought of Xuviphas.
"... I'll get you out of here," Athanasia lowered the tone of her voice to nearly a whisper, moving closer to Zephyria. "I'll do anything even if it's a sacrifice to get you out of here. I owe you that at least."
"You don't owe me anything, Athan," Zephyria had lowered her voice too.
"But, I do," Athanasia started to tell Zephyria. "I treated you like garbage all those weeks ago... And-" She stopped.
Nobody in a thousand years would even guess a Viking princess would have ever loved an Olympian. It just seemed like it was ripped right out of a cheesy middle-school level book. But, alas, it happened anyway.
"Besides, I-" Athanasia started again. Why is it so hard to say?, She thought to herself and then mentally cursed at herself. "I-I lo-" No, not today. It's too soon.
Athanasia had been in love with the Siren Queen for nearly two thousand years, but yet she thought it was too soon to confess to it.
Athanasia reverted back to the topic back of releasing Zephyria. "I'd do anything to set you free," Athanasia said. She moved even closer Zephyria--now their foreheads touched each other.
Zephyria's breath actually felt cold on Athanasia's lips, but the demon general didn't mind that. Matter of fact, she welcomed the feeling.
"I'd die for you," Athanasia breathed.
Silence fell upon the room a couple of minutes more.
Then, Athanasia had been caught off-guard by what Zephyria said next.
"I'd die for you too."
Athanasia's heart was skipping every other beat. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. Was she just telling Athanasia what she wanted to hear or did Zephyria genuinely mean it? Athanasia hoped it was the latter.
The two sat in that position, un-moving and not saying a single word for nearly an hour.
The sounds of demon guards strolling up and down the outside corridors is what pulled them apart.
They both knew they were losing time to hide Zephyria's daughter from Volrath--Athanasia knew that especially, but she didn't want this to stop.
Athanasia had pulled back, letting her hand slide away from Zephyria's cheek.
Zephyria seemed to be slightly upset that this had to come to an end.
Athanasia's eyes trailed downward falling upon Zephyria's soft lips. Athanasia wanted to kiss the Olympian, she really did--but, she knew it wasn't the right time for it.
Athanasia sighed softly, standing up. She finally broke the silence, "If I'm going to move your daughter to a secure location, I'm going to need her name."
"Her name is Aisara," Zephyria said.
"Okay," Athanasia started toward the door, only to feel something being slipped into her hand. She looked at it. It was coordinates. It must've been Aisara's location.
Athanasia opened the door, standing right in the door way. Athanasia stood there for a couple of minutes, just staring longingly at the Queen before slipping away and down the corridor, her heart swelling.
