Thirty-Four
Nothing felt right.
After two years of living in the late 1100s, the present seemed so foreign to Jasoslav.
The skyscrapers he saw towering above him felt unreal—he was almost in awe about the cars. He rubbed his eyes and blinked a couple of disbelief afterward.
"No time to stand and gawk," Koios told the group as he ushered them to a taxi.
"Where are we going?" Akachi asked Koios.
The Slavic god of fate and time lowered his voice, almost hushing it. "I can't say," he started to say in response. He swallowed. "I don't know who's working with Perseus and Lucifer and who's not."
"Great," Bohdana began, sounding frustrated. "We don't even know who we can even trust."
Sethunya rolled her eyes. "Let's just do what Koios says."
After Jasoslav, Lukyan, Akachi, Seth and Dana slid into the cab, Lukyan questioned, "What about you?"
"I'll meet you there." Koios make a gesture to the man in front of the wheel before slapping the top of the cab and disappearing.
Jasoslav's gaze wondered up to the front mirror that reflected the image of a young man with golden locks and ocean blue eyes behind the wheel of the vehicle.
Jasoslav didn't even have to say anything for the man to strike up a conversation.
"How are you folks doing?" The man began. "The name's Yarilo. I'm a friend of Koios's."
In unison, both Jasoslav and Bohdana seemed to say, "Yarilo?"
"What?" Akachi began to inquire. "You know him?"
"He's a Slavic deity," Bohdana started to say in shock.
"And a part time taxi driver," Yarilo added on. "But you already knew that on account of the fact you're in my cab." He paused. "Why are you so surprised to hear of my existence? You know Koios. Why am I any different?"
Dana responded with, "Well, Koios… he's Koios. He's forgotten from the pantheon for a reason." She swallowed. "But you? You're a major deity. I just-" She trailed off as if she couldn't think of the words that would allow her to continue.
"Well," Yarilo began, energetically. "It's good to know I still have fans." He wetted his lips. "I would've thought they'd all have converted to monotheistic beliefs like uh… what's it called?"
"Eastern Orthodox?" Bohdana suggested.
Jasoslav raised an eyebrow. "Judaism?"
"Yeah…" Yarilo began. "Those were what I was looking for." He stopped for a moment before continuing. "You know, it happened so fast. It was unexpected, honestly. One day the tribes worshiped my pantheon, next thing you know, they were all over Robert. Hell, the whole world was."
"Excuse me, who's Robert?" Akachi questioned Yarilo.
"He's a guy…from the time of the Kozgamek war. One of those celestials… like Xisuthros and Irzinog. He's a massive pot addict too. But, uhh, most people around the world know him as 'god' or whatever…" Yarilo began to inform the others. "I personally know him as Robert. Other friends of mine call him Bob or Bobby."
"You're telling me god's name is Bobby?" Akachi asked, trying not to laugh.
"Yep!" Yarilo breathed. "Honestly, he's not really a god even. A god of watching 'Breaking Bad' while being high maybe."
Laughter sounded off from Yarilo's passengers.
"Look, we're here," Yarilo told them, bringing the car to a stop in a woods.
The group exited the vehicle and Yarilo looked at them, through the rolled down window. "Good luck."
Then Yarilo took off, blaring NSYNC as he did.
"I see you've all met my brother, Yarilo," Koios's voice sounded off behind the group.
The group all turned in unison to face him.
"Come on," Koios beckoned, heading up a pathway that led deeper into the heart of the woods.
─┉─¡! • !¡─┉─
Koios had lead the group to a cabin in the woods that vaguely reminded Jasoslav of Jalila's cabin in the Prizrak Realm.
Koios knocked on the door before straightening his jacket.
"Oh! You must be Jalila's friends!" The demon who answered at the door with dirty blond hair responded. "Come in! Come in! We've been expecting you," they said.
The group hesitated before entering, the demon shutting the door behind them.
The demon rushed in front of the group. "Hi! I'm Zemfir Yaropolk. I'm sure my good friend Jalila has told you about me."
"The name does ring a bell," Jasoslav told them. "I think she brang you up once during our stay in the Prizrak Realm."
Zemfir clapped, excitedly. "Oh, goodie!" They turned to face a corridor and shouted down it, "They're here!"
A few moments passed before a Turkish woman came out of the corridor to meet with them.
"Good day, I'm Raijax Onuuth–one Jalila Sultan's associates," the woman said to them. She then waved, giggling a little. "Hi, Koios~"
"Raijax," The Slavic god responded.
"You might be wondering why I called you here," Raijax began to say. "Well, for the past few years, Zemfir and I have been tasked with spying on Perseus's every move." She took a deep breath. "Before, it was just, little minor inconveniences that he pulled… but now, it's bigger—so much bigger."
"Miss Onuuth, what do you mean?" Jasoslav questioned.
"Perseus will open the gates of Xuviphas," Raijax said, her voice wavering.
"Why?" Jasoslav asked as Akachi and Lukyan exchanged looks.
Bohdana and Sethunya had tensed and Koios looked like he had seen a ghost.
"He'll do it to appease Xisuthros," Raijax told the group.
Jasoslav's heart sank. "What?"
"I-I don't know what he hopes to gain from this," Raijax told the group. "All I do know is how many lives are at stake." She shook her head and exhaled. "Perseus plans to destroy the world and the realms."
