thirty nine

August 20th, 1978

As much as James and I were ready to start on the whole wedding planning thing, we still had another wedding to go through before ours.

After what seemed like the longest engagement, the day of Frank and Alice's wedding was here.

I fiddled with the hem of my bridesmaid dress as we all sat around a large bedroom in the Longbottom's house. Frank and the other men were in another room all getting ready, while all of us girls were in here helping Alice get ready.

Alice was pacing the room nervously, "I can't believe it, I can't believe that we're getting married."

Lily grabbed Alice's fiddling hands, "Calm down, you love him, he loves you."

The redhead shot a glance at Marlene, who sat up straight as she reached for another melon ball. "Yeah, Lils is right, everything's going to be fine." Marlene stated.

"That's true," Jolie added, "But if it's not-,"

I hit Jolie in the arm, "Shut up, this wedding is happening."

Dorcas stifled a laugh, "You still have time to make a getaway, but I highly recommend that you don't."

"I'm not going to be a runaway bride," Alice announced, "It's just pre-wedding jitters!"

I took a swig of my mimosa before speaking, "Exactly, you will be walking down that aisle, and Frank, the love of your life will be there."

"Please sit down so I can finish your hair." Lily stated sweetly, but sternly. It was about time to get this show on the road.

Jolie refilled her glass with some champagne, "I do love these dresses though, they're quite comfy."

All of our bridesmaid's dresses were a pale blue, corresponding with the color theme of the wedding, but they were all different in one way or another. So we matched, but it wasn't tacky.

Alice sighed nervously, "Good, I'm glad. Do you think everything is-"

There was a knock on the door, interrupting the bride to be.

I set my glass down on the coffee table and stood up, smoothing out the nonexistent wrinkles on my dress.  I walked over to the door and peeked my head out.

James was standing there.

I grinned at him and stepped out into the hallway, closing the door behind me.

He pressed a kiss to my cheek, "You look gorgeous, Daph."

"Thank you, and you look very good."

James tucked a stray strand of hair from my updo behind my ear, "I'm the messenger apparently, so I came to make sure that you lot will be ready in five minutes."

"We will," I replied, "Is that the only reason you came here?"

James grinned as he wrapped his arms around my waist, "Of course not, I also wanted to see you."

I kissed him softly.

"I can't believe this will be us in only a few months." I confessed, gazing into James' hazel eyes.

James smirked, "Not having second thoughts, are you?"

"Of course not, I can't wait."

"Me neither."

I kissed James on the cheek, "I'll see you down there."

He smiled, "I'll see you down there, mon amour."

I turned back towards the door when James' grabbed my arm and pulled me back close to him. He kissed me softly, "Okay, now you can go."

I smiled, "Okay."

Opening the door to the bedroom, I was grinning like an absolute idiot. It's been almost three years, and I still smile every single time we kiss.

"The guys are heading down now, so we should all head down there." I announced as I walked over to my previous seat on the couch.

There was a murmur of agreements from all of the other women.

"I'm ready, I'm one hundred percent ready to get married." Alice assured us all as she fiddled with her bracelet nervously.

I drank down the rest of the champagne in my glass before standing up, "Alright then, let's get this show on the road."

After a beautiful ceremony, the expansive backyard was transformed into a party. Tables and chairs were set up, the music began playing, and people found their seats as the food began to be served.

Despite not having any vows prepared, Frank and Alice managed to easily come up with them on the spot. They had been together so long that they didn't even need to think about why they love each other, or why they want to commit their lives to each other until death.

The ceremony itself made both of their mum's cry, as well as most other mums, including Euphemia. It even brought tears to Jolie's eyes, and Jolie never cries.

The dinner part of the reception went smoothly, and I spent the time talking among all of my friends from school. It was nice to see them all and catch up.

Lily and Marlene are still together, and very happy, Mary and her boyfriend broke up, but she's already on the rebound, and Dorcas started healer training three weeks ago.

We've all postponed our plans for the future because of the war. Dumbledore wrote to us all two weeks ago, informing us about the Order. It's some sort of secret 'society' to fight against Voldemort and the Death Eaters. That's what his followers are calling themselves now. I'm also pretty sure that Snivellus is a Death Eater. I can't I didn't call it.

"Want to dance?" James asked, extending his hand to me.

I intertwined my fingers through his, my ring sparkling as the setting sun hit it. "Of course, darling."

We both got up from the table and joined some of our other friends on the dance floor.

As the music played as everyone danced, it almost made me forget about the obscene things happening outside of this little pod of happiness. My arms were wrapped around James' neck, his arms were around my waist, and we swayed to the music.

You are the sunshine of my life
That's why I'll always be around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you'll stay in my heart

James kissed my head, "What songs are we going to play at our wedding?"

"I hadn't really thought about it," I replied, looking up at him to meet his hazel eyes, "Have you?"

"We don't really have a song, but I think Your Song by Elton John would be a good song for our first dance."

I grinned at my fiancé, "I love that song."

"I know you do, and so do I. Which would make it a perfect first dance song."

"Then it's settled." I replied with a smile.

James kissed me softly, "Then it's settled."

You must have known that I was lonely
Because you came to my rescue
And I know that this must be Heaven
How could so much love be inside you?

Sirius's voice interrupted the comfortable silence that James and I had been dancing in, tucked away in our own little world. The black-haired boy draped his arms around the both of us, "I bet you five galleons that Alice and Frank will have a kid within the next year."

"Why are you betting on-"

James cut me off, "I bet you five galleons that they won't have a kid within the next year, I think it will be a couple of years."

Sirius and James shook hands, "Deal."

I rolled my eyes at the two of them, "Why are you betting on this? Are you going to bet on when James and I are going to have kids?"

"Oh, I already am," Sirius replied, "Ever since you got engaged. I have a bet with Remus, one with Marlene, and one with mum."

"You have one with mum?" James asked, his voice going higher than usual.

Sirius clapped him on the back, "Yes, yes I do."

I rolled my eyes, "I don't even want to know what the bets are, I'll feel pressured."

"Well," Sirius whispered, "You didn't hear it from me, but if you have a kid born in 1980, I get ten galleons."

James let out a soft laugh as Sirius disappeared back into the crowd of dancing people.

I shook my head, "I'm not sure how I feel about having a kid at twenty."

"Me neither," James sighed, "Good thing is we can wait until we're ready."

I pressed a soft kiss against James' lips as the song came to an end, and a more upbeat song began.

The night started to come to an end around eleven. All of the older people had left, claiming to be exhausted as they said goodbye to the newlyweds, leaving all of the people under the age of thirty remaining at the reception.

Alice was no longer in her gown from the wedding ceremony, and she was dressed in a white cocktail dress. Most of the men had taken off their suit jackets as the drinks kept flowing and the music became more turnt up.

I was in the middle of taking shots with Jolie and Marlene when a very drunk James draped his arms around my shoulders from behind.

His tie was fastened around his head in a makeshift headband, his shirt was only halfway buttoned, and his hazel eyes were wild.

"I'm so sorry, love, the boys made me do shots, and now I'm a wee bit drunk." James stated, his words slurring together as the alcohol worked through his system.

I stifled a laugh, "That's alright because I'm a wee bit drunk too."

James leaned in and kissed me, "This is one of the many reasons I love you."

Marlene slammed her empty shot glass at the table, "This wedding is fucking awesome! Please tell me that you lot will be having an open bar as well?"

"Damn right, we will." James replied as he leaned against me for stability.

Lily, whose conversation with Dorcas was interrupted by Marlene's yelling, came rushing over towards her girlfriend. She kissed Marlene on the cheek, "I think that's enough alcohol for the night."

"Buzzkill," Jolie slurred, "Has anyone seen Reggie? I miss him."

James pointed over to the dance floor where Sirius and Regulus were thrashing around, their black hair flying around them. Remus was watching the in disbelief as he sipped on a glass of wine.

Jolie pat James on the shoulder, "Thanks buddy, I appreciate it."

"I think that's the nicest she's ever been to me." James whisper yelled as Jolie stumbled off to the dance floor.

Lily laughed, "I think so too." She turned her attention back to Marlene, who was currently trying to get her hands on another bottle of vodka, "Mar-, hey, darling-, I don't think you need that tonight. Okay? Let's go home before you blackout on the bar."

Marlene rolled her eyes, "Fine, but," She pointed at James and me, "If anything interesting happens, I better hear about it."

I saluted her, "Yes ma'am."

Marlene blew us a kiss before allowing Lily to drag her back to their flat.

"Good to see you both," Lily chimed, "Let me know about any wedding plans!"

Remus walked up behind James and me, "I think it's about time that you two get your drunk arses home."

I shook my head at him, "I don't think so, I would like to stay and dance."

"Yes, I would very much like to dance." James agreed, talking very animatedly with his hands.

Remus shrugged, "You can dance, but only if we can all crash at your place. There's no way that I can get the three of them home."

I intertwined my fingers through James', "That sounds good to me as long as we can dance."

James allowed me to drag him over to the dance floor where we were welcomed by the rest of our friends.
