forty two

After being promptly woken up at nine in the morning on my wedding day, things got crazy.

Remus, Sirius, and Regulus visited me soon after I woke up. Remus brought me coffee, Sirius gave me a speech about 'the joys and struggles of marriage', and Regulus hugged me.

The girls arrived at ten, excluding Jolie, who was the one to wake me up, and we had breakfast together in my bedroom before we all got ready.

Despite the nice breakfast, with Euphemia popping in, it was the last bit of calm before the storm that I like to call My Mother arrived.

As soon as I heard the knock on the door, my stomach dropped.

I shot Jolie a glance, and she finished the rest of her mimosa before getting up. "Missus Beaufort, Beatrice," Jolie exclaimed, "It's so lovely to see you."

My mother smiled, her lips pressed into a thin line, "It's lovely to see you too, although I wish it were under different circumstances."

Marlene's eyes darted towards me, a confused and borderline concerned look on her face.

I stood up from the couch in the suite-like bedroom, "Mum, Bea, I'm glad you all could make it. Where's dad and Henry?"

My not-so-little sister hugged me, "Dad wanted to speak with James, and Henry is with the boys."

"Hi, I'm Lily, it's lovely to meet you both," Lily said, coming to my rescue. "We'll leave you to talk as a family."

My mother smiled, "Thank you, dear."

All of my friends flooded out of the room, taking Beatrice with them, leaving me alone with my mother.

She sat down in one of the plush armchairs, and I sat across from her on the couch. I smoothed out my silk nightgown before folding my hands in my lap.

"Do you really hate him that much?"

My mother looked up at me, seemingly startled that I was speaking to her. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a tight bun, streaked with the occasional grey hair.

She rest her hands in her lap, "No, I don't. He's a fine young man, but I don't understand why you feel the need to get married so young, you're both only eighteen."

"You and dad got married at nineteen." I replied, my voice indifferent.

My mother looked down at her formal black dress and sighed. "Yes, we did."

"I truly do love him," I added, "And I'm sorry if you don't approve of this marriage-, actually, I'm not sorry. You made a mistake when it came to marriage, and you took it out on all of your perfect children. I am not you, and I'm not making a mistake, regardless of what you think."

My mothers' lips were pressed into a firm line, "Very well then, it is your life. You've practically been without us since you were fifteen, so I assume that I have no right to make decisions for you."

Her voice was cold.

"I need to start getting ready." I stated, my voice unwavering despite the emotion that rooted itself in the pit of my stomach.

My mother stood up, "Very well then."

The oak door closed with a bang as she left the room, leaving me all alone.

As much as I would have liked to scream, or cry, or punch something, this is my wedding day and I would not let my 'mother' wreck it for me.

Just as soon as the door closed, there was a knock and it opened again.

Beatrice and Henry smiled at me from the doorway.

"Come in, you two."

The two sixteen-year-olds made themselves comfortable after Bea closed the door softly behind her. Henry sat beside me on the couch, and Bea occupied the chair that our mother had been sitting in.

"Big day," Henry said, "You nervous?"

I smiled, "Not at all, I know it's the right choice. I'm more excited than nervous."

Beatrice tucked her blonde curls behind her ear, "That's good, I would be planning an escape, but that's just me."

Henry rolled his eyes at his twin, "That's only because you're terrified of commitment, Bea."

I laughed softly, "Jolie used to be that way too, but look at her now."

"Maybe one day." Beatrice replied.

"I still wish you both would've agreed to be a bridesmaid and a groomsman."

Henry smirked, "I know, I would've looked gorgeous in one of those dresses."

I rolled my eyes, "Yeah, I bet you would've."

The room fell silent briefly.

"I know I was never there for you guys after Seb moved out, and I'm sorry for that, I really am."

Bea's greenish-grey eyes pierced mine, "You have nothing to apologize for."

"I just want you to know that I'm still always going to be around, no matter what."

Henry hugged me, "We know you will, Daph."

There was yet another knock on the door, this time belonging to someone that I hadn't seen in the longest time.

Beatrice hugged me before following Henry out of the room, "It's going to be a busy morning for you."

As the twins left, my dad came in.

I stood up and returned his embrace as he hugged me tightly.

"Daphne," My dad said, "You picked a good one."

He sat down on the couch next to me. "I spoke with James, and even though I've only really met him twice, he's a good one."

"You think so? Because mum thinks otherwise." I muttered, slightly bitter.

My dad shrugged, "You know how your mother is. All I care about is that you're happy and if James makes you happy then I like him."

I rest my hand on top of my dad's reassuringly, "Thank you, Dad. I'm really glad that you're here to walk me down the aisle and give me away."

"As am I," He replied, "However, there is one more person who wants to talk to you, so I think we should cut this conversation short."

I frowned, "Who could be so important?"

My dad kissed me on the forehead, "Well, I am just your dear old dad. I'll see on the aisle." He teased as he left the room, clapping the newest arrival on the back.

He held his arms out, "If it isn't my favorite sister."

"Sebastian!" I exclaimed, wrapping my arms tightly around my older brother.

"Ouch, you're suffocating me, and more importantly, you're wrinkling my very expensive suit."

I rolled my eyes at Seb as we parted from the hug, "Oh whatever, it's been too long since I last saw you."

"I know, right?" He replied, "Last time I saw you, you were single, and now you're getting married in a few hours."

"It's been three years?" I questioned.

Sebastian shrugged, his blonde hair falling into his face, "I guess so."

"How's Penelope? You propose yet?" I teased.

Sebastian smirked, "Nope, didn't want to steal your thunder, and we have a trip planned in March, so I'm thinking of proposing then."

I hugged my brother, "I'm so happy for you, Seb."

"And I'm so happy for you, Daph. He seems like a good guy, and he's going to treat you right until the day you die."

"Yeah, he will."

Sebastian smiled, "I can hear the girls in the hallway, which means it's my cue to leave."

"I'll talk to you more at the reception, okay?" I asked.

"I wouldn't have it any other way."

After the conversations with my family, I was more than glad when all of my friends returned to the room and began bustling around me.

I showered and changed into a warm, fluffy robe so that we could begin the process of getting ready.

All of my bridesmaids: Jolie, Lily, Marlene, Alice, Mary, and Dorcas, were all dressed in their gowns when I got out of the shower.

They wore long-sleeved emerald dresses, with a v-neck and slit, paired with white high heels.

"You all look stunning," I admitted as Lily brushed my hair, despite my protests that I could do it myself. "Do you like the color? Because James said that 'it's a Slytherin color', and I told him that he's not the one wearing the dress and that green isn't strictly Slytherin."

Mary poured a glass of champagne, "I love the color, it makes everyone's eyes pop."

"Agreed." Dorcas said as she held out her glass for Mary to refill.

Jolie was starting on my makeup, keeping it natural, but not too natural.

"Close your eyes unless you want eyeshadow in them." Jolie stated, bring a brush-covered in a nude-colored eyeshadow to my face.

Marlene laughed, "Let's talk about your honeymoon."

Despite my eyes being closed, I still rolled them.

"What about it?" I asked, "We're going to St. Lucia, for two weeks, but apparating back on Christmas, then continuing the holiday until the new year."

"Open," Jolie stated as she finished my eyeshadow and began on my mascara, "And you know that's not what she meant."

Lily, who finished curling my hair with the flick of her wand, laughed, "Can we expect a baby Potter in about nine months from tomorrow?"

"Nope, not a chance." I announced, crossing my arms across my chest. "We don't want a baby, yet, so we're still 'practicing'."

Mary clapped her hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh.

"I like that idea," Jolie agreed, "That's what I do."

Marlene laughed, "At least I'll never have to worry about unwanted pregnancy."

"I second that." Lily joked as she pinned parts of my hair.

Dorcas laughed, "At least you're all getting some."

We all burst out laughing but were quickly silenced by a knock on the door.

"Who is it?" Jolie yelled.

"It's your favorite Black brother."

"Regulus?"

The door cracked up, and Sirius's head appeared in the doorway. "That hurt a little bit, Jo. Can I come in?"

"Sure," I replied, "What's up?"

Sirius grinned, "Looking lovely ladies, will you be ready to head down in about ten minutes?"

I turned around in my chair to look at Sirius, "Yes, I just need to put my dress on, and my heels."

"I'll see you down there, Vixen." Sirius said before kissing me on the forehead and disappearing back into the hallway.

I stood up from my chair and grabbed my dress from where it was hanging, alone, in the wardrobe.

"Jolie went with me dress shopping," I said as I stepped behind the changing partition and slipped off my robe, "But you lot haven't seen it yet, so I'm excited to see what you think."

Lily laughed, "Oh please, you'd look amazing in anything."

I stepped into the dress and pulled it up, slipping my arms into the lace sleeves, "Thanks Lils. Jo, can you come zip me up?"

Jolie appeared behind me, quickly zipping my gown, "It fits so well, too."

"Perks of alteration."

My best friend stepped out from behind the changing partition and grabbed my emerald green heels from their spot on the floor.

I lifted my dress as she slipped them onto my feet, the color of the heels identical to the bridesmaid's dresses.

"Okay, you're all good?" Jolie asked, giving me one last look.

"I'm perfect," I replied, with a smile, "You ready to see?"

The girls replied with a chorus of agreements.

I stepped out from behind the changing partition and jokingly did a spin.

"You look beautiful!" Alice chimed.

Mary nodded, "That dress is amazing."

Everyone else agreed as another knock sounded on the door.

"As long as you're not James, you can come in." I chimed, turning to look at myself in the mirror.

Remus peaked his head in, "We're all ready-," He smiled at me, "You look beautiful. You have no idea how impatient James has been all day."

I laughed, "Thanks, Moony, and it's been less than twenty hours since I last saw him. It's bad luck to see each other on the day of the wedding."

"Well duh," He replied, "But you know how he is."

The girls grabbed their bouquets and made their way to the door, heading down the stairs.

I linked my arm through Remus's extended one, "Let's go have a wedding."
