fifty two
November 30th, 1979
I descended the stairs into the foyer, where the smell of dinner being cooked filled my senses. James was singing in the kitchen while he was cooking, and his voice carried through the house, making me smile as I made my way to the kitchen.
He was examining the food in the oven through the oven window, his eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the roast.
I sat down quietly on one of the stools at the island, finally drawing my husbands attention away from cooking.
"Hello darling," James announced with a grin.
I smiled, "What's for dinner?"
"A roast, potatoes, and carrots. It should be done soon."
I nodded, "Sounds good."
James hummed softly as he turned his attention back to cooking.
I drummed my fingers softly against the granite countertops.
Is now a good time?
I sighed as I lifted my head up from where it had been resting in my hand, and cleared my throat.
"James, I'm late."
My husband, who was busy making dinner, glanced up at me, "No you're not, the Order meeting isn't for another hour or so."
I huffed, "No-, I know that. What I mean is that I'm late."
James put on an oven mitt and grabbed the roast from the oven. "I don't get-," James set the roast on the stovetop a little too hard, his eyes widening.
He pushed up his wire glasses and discarded his oven mitt. "Late, as in?"
"Yes," I replied.
My husband leaned against the counter, his eyes wide, and his face holding an expression that I couldn't quite understand.
"How late?"
I thought for a second, "A week or so?"
"Bloody hell," James muttered.
"James, darling," I assured, "There's no need to freak out or jump to conclusions."
James stared at me, his hazel eyes warm-hearted. "I'm not," He replied, "I'm just thinking. We should get you into the doctor to make sure, and then depending on what we find out-"
"That sounds great, and we will do that, but right now I just want to eat the dinner that you made for us." I shrugged, "Plus we have the Order meeting tonight, so we can figure all of this out tomorrow."
James threw his hands up in the air dramatically. He sighed, "You can't spring this news on me because now I'm too excited to eat and I'm going to be restless all night."
I rolled my eyes at James.
"Just sit down and eat dinner with me please," I teased.
The sound of our front door being flung open distracted us.
Sirius came strutting into the kitchen, his Doc Marten's loud against the tile floor.
"Hello fuckers," He announced, "We came over for dinner."
Remus shook his head from behind Sirius, "He's such a dumbass."
"Why did we give him a key?" I asked jokingly as I got up and grabbed four plates from the cabinet.
"Because you would get bored without your favorite token gays," Sirius stated.
James shrugged, "You're not wrong."
"Can we eat?" Remus asked. "I'm hungry and the food smells really good."

December 1st, 197
St. Mungo's
"Hi, I have an appointment."
The receptionist looked up at me over her glasses. Her face was expressionless, "Name?"
"Daphne Potter," I replied.
The receptionist looked at the records, checking for my name, before looking at James beside me before looking back at me with a blank look. "Fifth floor," She stated, "You two look young."
"Thank you?" James said questioningly.
I grabbed James by the hand and dragged him towards the elevator.
"She was weird," He muttered.
"I think she was judging us," I added.
The elevator doors closed behind us and we started up towards the fifth floor.
James sighed, "She's probably just jealous that we're happily married and have a great sex life."
I hit James in the arm while trying to stifle a laugh.
The elevator doors opened and James and I stepped onto the fifth floor of St. Mungo's.
The floors were bright checkered tile, and the walls were an odd shade of blue that looked more like grey. Chairs, couches, and tables were scattered around the waiting room, and a series of hallways darted in every direction.
James and I sat down on one of the couches as we waited.
My husband was tapping his foot nervously as he kept looking down at his watch.
"James?"
He looked at me with a startled look on his face, "Yes? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, are you?"
"Of course I am, why wouldn't I be?" James rambled.
I smiled at my husband, "You won't stop tapping your foot and you keep checking the time. You only do that when you're anxious."
James sighed, "Bloody hell, what is taking them so long?"
I laughed quietly, "Are you nervous?"
"A little bit," James admitted. "But it's a good kind of nervous."
I laced my fingers through James's, "I don't want us to get our hopes up though."
Before James could respond, a Healer dressed in dark green robes appearing in the waiting room and called my name.
We both stood up and followed the Healer down a hallway as she spoke in a cheerful voice.
"Hello Missus and Mister Potter, I'm Healer Diana."
I smiled nervously as she led us into a room down a brightly lit hallway, "Hello."
"So I saw the notes," Healer Diana said as she closed the door behind us, "You can sit up there honey, and it looks like we'll do a pregnancy test, and go from there."
James looked nervous from where he was sitting in the chair next to the exam table. I squeezed his hand reassuringly.
"There is a pregnancy detection spell, but all it will tell me is whether or not you are pregnant, not the logistics," She explained. "If that is positive, then I'll use this ultrasound machine to find out more information. Does that sound okay?"
I nodded, "Yeah, that sounds good."
The Healer smiled softly at James and I before pulling out her wand.
She instructed me to lie back as she explained that there would be a glowing light it I'm pregnant.
James held my hand tightly as the Healer began to cast a spell. Our eyes locked with each other's and James' cool hazel eyes settled any nerves that I was feeling about this.
"Congratulations," Healer Diana said.
I looked away from James and saw the glowing white light hovering above my stomach.
When I looked over at James, his jaw was dropped, and he had a stunned look on his face.
"James, darling?"
A smile quickly came over his face, making him look just as young as he had when we fell in love.
"I'm going to be a dad!" James exclaimed, smiling ear to ear. He placed his other hand on top of mine. "Oh my god, we're having a baby. A literal human being."
I laughed, a wide smile dancing across my lips, "Yeah, we are. We're having a baby."
Healer Diana smiled kindly at us, "Would you like to do the ultrasound now?"
James and I both nodded excitedly as she turned on the ultrasound and brought it over to the exam table.
"This will be cold," She said as I lifted up my shirt and she squirted some gel onto my stomach.
I knew it was going to be cold but it still shocked me when it touched my bare stomach.
The Healer used the transducer probe and rubbed around the gel on my stomach. She stopped moving and a clear image appeared on the screen beside the exam table.
She peered at the ultrasound, "You look around six weeks, which would make your due date August 10th. We should be able to find a heartbeat too."
The transducer probe was moved around a bit more before the rapid sound of a heartbeat played through the screen.
I smiled widely, blinked back the stinging in my eyes. I stared at the screen, looking at the small figure in the frame.
Our baby.
James was smiling like an absolute idiot when Healer Diana printed out a picture of the ultrasound. He was smiling like an even bigger idiot when we made an appointment to come back in 4 weeks.
He held my hand tightly as we stepped back into the elevator and went back down to the ground floor.
"We're having a baby," James exclaimed quietly.
I kissed James on the cheek, "Are you happy?"
James scoffed, "How could I not be? The woman that I love is pregnant with my child!"
"I'm glad," I replied, "Because I'm really goddamn excited."

James and I wanted to tell our friends as soon as possible, and I was practically bubbling with excitement when the doorbell rang.
Jolie and Regulus met me in the living room, and were followed by Sirius and Remus.
"Prongs, we had dinner here last night," Sirius stated, "Why would you want to have us over again tonight?"
Jolie frowned, "Hey-, we weren't invited."
"That's because we were in the middle of eating when Sirius barged in through the front door," I explained. "You're lucky that we always have extra food."
James laughed nervously, "Dinner won't be ready for awhile, who wants drinks?"
All four of them agreed, and were quickly given glasses of wine. I quietly sipped my water as everyone began to settle in.
Regulus and Jolie were sitting on the couch, and Remus was seated in an armchair, which Sirius sitting on the plush arm of the chair.
I leaned against the back of the couch, and made eye contact with my husband. He nodded at me reassuringly, trying not to smile.
"So there's actually an occasion for tonight's dinner," I announced.
Regulus furrowed his brows, "And what would that be?"
"Wait-, why aren't you drinking?" Sirius interrupted. "If one of us drinks, we all drink."
"That is never a good idea," Remus suggested.
James crossed the room and stood next to me, draping his arm across my shoulders.
I took a large sip of water before explaining.
"Yeah, funny story, I'm actually pregnant."
Sirius stood up dramatically, "What?"
"Congratulations!" Jolie exclaimed as she stood up and hugged me tightly.
"You had unprotected sex?" Sirius yelled. "When?"
Regulus hit his brother in the arm, "Shut up, congratulations you two."
Remus hugged James and I, "It was only a matter of time."
Sirius took a sip of his wine, "When?"
James and I exchanged a look with each other before James cleared his throat. "Based on the due date, November 3rd."
"November 3rd? That's my birthday you fuckers!" Sirius yelled. "You two left my birthday party early to have sex?"
"Surprise!" I joked.
Sirius crossed his arms, "While I am still processing this news, I'm happy for you two."
He hugged James tightly before hugging me next. Sirius whispered in my ear, "Please make me the godfather."
I rolled my eyes at Sirius before sitting down on the couch between Jolie and James.
My best friend was beginning to bombard me with questions, but I didn't mind at all.
"How far along are you?"
"Six weeks."
"When's your due date?"
"August 10th."
All of our friends were just as excited as James and I were, and were already beginning to discuss what would change in our group once I had the baby.
When dinner was ready, we all ate slowly, chattering excitedly about the big news.
Sirius said that the only logical name for the baby would be Sirius, boy or girl, because it's an "amazing name that automatically makes someone a sexy bitch". Let's just say that we vetoed that name.
Our friends didn't leave until around midnight, and even though I was exhausted, it took me awhile to fall asleep because of how excited I was.
I only wish that our baby could grow up with grandparents.
