Chapter Ten- What Now?
Nearly a week after they had left, Bucky and the rest of his team arrived back home mere minutes after Emily and the other women returned. But as he walked in, he froze. The whole tower was silent, and that worried him. Emily walked in right behind him, her hands clasped over her incredibly swollen stomach.
"Noelle?" He called, worried, and within seconds, FRIDAY answered.
"She is in her bedroom, sir. The same place that she has been since almost an hour after you left." He dropped his pack, sprinting for his daughter's bedroom. Emily froze, staring at Tony as he entered the room.
"You had something to do with her not leaving her room, didn't you?" He shrugged slightly, setting his glass down on the counter.
"So? Why would it matter if I did?" Her face paled, and she turned to leave, moving as quickly as her swollen stomach would allow. Meanwhile, Bucky tried to open Noelle's door, hearing her muttering and panicked breathing.
"Noelle? Ellie, it's me. It's your dad. FRIDAY, open the door!!" He begged, hearing her cries growing louder.
"I'm sorry, sir. But her room is on a master lockdown. I regret that I am only allowed to release it for Mr. Stark or Mrs. Rogers." He slumped against the door, fighting back tears, but then he heard Katherine's frantic voice.
"FRIDAY, override master lockdown, alpha code seven-delta-eighteen, passcode ESME-574." His head shot up, and she nearly crashed into the wall, Emily struggling up the stairs not far behind. He swung open the door, choking down the bile that rose when he saw the sate of her and her room. The pillows had been ripped open, furniture had been moved, books and clothes had been yanked from shelves, and the two mirrors in there were shattered. But the worst part was actually seeing Noelle, curled in the corner. He moved slowly towards her, his flesh hand extended.
"Noelle?" He whispered. As he got closer, he could see a couple pieces of bloodstained glass on the floor, as well as the fact that her arm and hand were crisscrossed with cuts, some of them still bleeding. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder, and she recoiled, lashing out at him in a panic.
"nu! Nu, lasă-mă în pace! vă rog...nu!" (No! No, leave me alone! Please...no!) He gently caught her, holding her close and rocking her, singing softly as her tried to calm her as she flailed about, panicking.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these sunken eyes and learn to see. All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to be free. Blackbird fly, blackbird fly. Into the light of the dark black night. Blackbird fly, blackbird fly. Into the light of the dark black night." Her cries slowly turned into sobs, and as they did, she buried her face in his shoulder, curling into his arms.
"What happened, dragă fată?" He whispered, and she looked up at his, tears filling her eyes.
"He locked me in there.... You were gone.... I couldn't get out. I...... It was like I was there all over again." He sucked in a sharp breath, gently cupping one side of her face in his hand.
"Who?" He whispered, barely daring to breathe as she took a shaky breath.
"Tony." She breathed, and it took everything in Bucky not to jump up and go after him right that second, but he knew that his daughter needed him right then. Emily came in, sitting down beside them. She pulled Noelle close, tears streaming down her cheeks. Bucky slowly stood, and when he saw Emily's slight nod, he slowly walked out, partially closing the door behind him. He moved quickly towards Tony's lab, not caring that Steve, Katherine, Ethan, Sarah, and the twins were in there with him. Bucky's flesh hand closed around Tony's throat, lifting him just barely off the ground and slamming him against the wall.
"Why, Tony? Why the **** would you think that was a good idea? Why would you do that?" He heard the desperation lacing his voice, and he was struggling not to cry right then because of what he'd seen in his daughter's bedroom.
"I didn't...... What are you talking about, Barnes?" Katherine's face paled, and the went over to one of his tablets, tapping on a couple things. She gasped in shock, nearly dropping the tablet, but managed to catch herself.
"Dad......Why did you do this? And have you even looked at it since you locked the door?" He shook his head, and she stormed over, nearly shoving the tablet in his face.
"First off, why the **** would you put a ******* camera in her **** room?! Second, why would you lock her ******* door?!" Steve gently shooed their wide-eyed children out, as they stared at their furious mother, shocked that she was cursing at their grandfather. He closed the door behind them, and Bucky released Tony, slumping into a nearby chair.
"Tony......You made her think she was back with Hydra again. I don't think she's come out of the panic attack since you locked the door. She hurt herself, Tony. Her arm.... It was covered in blood. I couldn't even tell how bad it was because of how much blood there was. I think...... I think she tried to kill herself so that they wouldn't get ahold of her again." He said softly, fighting back tears. Tony stared at him, in shock as the realization of what he had done to her crashed over him. He stumbled back, leaning against the wall, and slid to the floor. Steve gently placed a hand on Bucky's shoulder, startling him.
"I'll go get Bruce." He said softly, and Bucky nodded, standing. He left Tony and Katherine in the lab and went back upstairs to find Noelle in her bathroom, gently dabbing at the dried blood that caked her skin in some places.
"Need some help?" He asked softly, and she didn't even look up.
"I thought...... I was sure that I was back with them. I couldn't......I remembered you, and I wasn't going to let them do that to me again. Even when I didn't remember, there were so many times that I wished that I could just die instead of having to go through with their torture over and over again." He moved over, gently taking the washcloth from her, and he started to gently clean her arm off.
"I know. It's so hard, not remembering anything. You constantly feel like you would be better off dead, that no one would miss you, and because you can't remember anything, you think that's true." She nodded slightly.
"I keep forgetting that I'm not the only one that's been through this." She said softly, allowing a tiny smile to creep across her face. He chuckled softly, smiling, and sat down beside her on the edge of the tub.
"Hey now. I might be a little old, but you do have to remember that me technically being over a hundred is quite helpful for you." He teased. She bit her lip, but couldn't quite hold back the giggle that escaped. He smiled, gently hugging her.
"You want to see if your mom, Steve, Katherine, and your cousins want to do popcorn, candy, and Disney movies after Bruce takes a look at your arm?" She smiled, looking up at him.
"Only if we watch Beauty and the Beast first." He chuckled, ruffling her hair slightly.
"You are most definitely your mother's daughter." She smiled, looking back down at her knees.
"Mom says I look more like you, though." He chuckled, ruffling her hair and setting the now bloodstained washcloth in the sink, filling it up with water so that it could soak.
"You do look like me. But you act a lot like her. Come on. Let's get you cleaned up the rest of the way." She slowly stood on shaky legs, following her dad down to Bruce's lab, and within twenty minutes, they were headed down for the movies. Bucky sighed softly as he watched his daughter. She had so many more scars than he did....And he wasn't completely sure how to help her with some of them.
