How A Child's Fun Became A Passion
It started out as nothing more than me dancing and singing,
To every song I knew words to.
Singing at Christmas time,
For family.
And nothing more.
Then I started public school,
And I found a love for those silly songs about worms,
No one else seemed to have.
Fifth grade year came around,
That meant mandatory fifth grade choir,
A way out of my parents trying to force me into band or orchestra,
And nothing more.
But then suddenly it was.
I came to adore our long-term sub music teacher,
Who valued each of her students,
And knew us all by name.
Who called each of us special,
And who told me through my grandma I had an amazing voice,
Choir was no longer a get out of band or orchestra card,
It was something I waited for all week.
Under pressure from her and grandparents,
I auditioned,
Fearfully,
For the honors choir at our local center for the arts,
And chose choir as a elective for middle school.
Auditions went well,
I met my choir teacher for the honors choir and school choir,
And found out soon I made it in.
The year finished off with a solo for me,
The summer flew by,
Faster than ever before,
The two choirs were what I looked forward to,
The entire week,
And soon seventh grade year was upon me.
The seventh/eighth combined choir,
And honors choir again,
With one added on,
The after school jazz choir.
By eighth grade year,
Something had changed,
Singing had become a passion,
Something I was seeing myself doing later on.
The choir musical approached,
And I got a huge solo,
And everyone said I was by far the best part.
Voice lessons were coming to mind,
Seeming to be the next step,
But the pieces would not line up.
Then by total surprise,
A friend tagged my mom on a piano teacher's page,
For my sister,
Who also teaches voice.
New to town,
Time for new students,
Inexpensive,
Willing to let me just have a few,
As we had limited scholarship money.
It almost seemed to good to be,
But I had my first lesson,
And suddenly,
That small dream was coming true,
And the dream are getting larger by the day.
From child's fun,
To get out of orchestra and band,
To a hobby,
To a passion,
To a career to be.
