01: Satesfied

Y/n
Despite the soreness in my hands, I gripped tightly onto the wine glass. I clench my fist, my nails digging into my skin, in an effort to stop myself from crying and making a fool of my self. I hang my head low, thoughts of what would have been if I hadn't sized him up so quickly flooding my mind.

I felt guilty... guilty that I fantasized about my sister's husband, guilty that I love him, guilty because it won't go away. But I love her more.

And if it means I should give up my own happiness to ensure hers, then so be it.

I watch them share kisses and dance romantically across the dance floor. I felt a hand reach for mine from under the table. I look over at John, a pained smile spreading across his face.

I wasn't the only one who loved Alexander. But I was the only one who knew of John's scandalous secret. I reach over and kiss his cheek, watching as it turns bright red.

"Hey, John..." I mumble, hoping he'd hear me. He looks over at me. "You're not courting anyone, right?"

He smirks, "No, why?"

"Well, the love of our lives just left us so..." I wiggle my eyebrows teasingly as he blushes and laughs.

"Why, Ms. Schuyler, I would love to court you."

As I attempted to count the petite freckles scattered across his face, I felt my chest tighten. My stomach did summersaults and the world around me seemed to darken. I feel lightheaded...

Rewind...

"I'm so excited!" Peggy beamed. This would mark her first Winter's Ball, she's finally of age to attend the ball.

Angelica nods mindlessly, applying a thick coat of lipstick to her dark lips. We barely got to see her after she eloped with John Church. It was a surprise father had even bothered to let her step foot into our house after this scandal. But I'm not complaining. It's nice to have my sister back.

"The food! The dancing~" Peggy sways, humming a quiet tune.

"What 'bout you, Liz?" The bed sinks under my weight as I sit beside Eliza. "Lookin' forward to anything?" I elbow her in a teasing manner. Eliza simply blushes and rocks back and forth in embarrassment.

"Well... um, father suggested I look for a suitor at the ball," she said. I wiggle my eyebrows, a smirk stretching across my face.

"That so?"

"Yeah..."

"Ohhhh," Pegs teased. "Lizzie's gonna get laid."

"PEGGY!" Eliza exclaims, Peggy, Angelica, and I break into a fit of laughter. She proceeds to rant about how annoying we've been acting lately. I shrugged it off, zoning out in the middle of it.

I wonder how all this will turn out.

Third Person
Inconsequent polite conversation, dancing, wine. It seemed like a typical ball, but with the Schuyler sisters present, no one could avert their away from them.

Angelica and Y/n dazzled the room, mingling with the guests. Meanwhile, Peggy was dancing for the 10th time with a different man and Eliza was engaging in polite conversations with important figures of the war.

"Hey, why aren't you dancing, Betsey?" Peggy walks to her older sister.

Eliza glances down at her sister, "I've been offered to dance a few times but I'm not in the mood to dance so I've declined. I'm afraid some whom I've rejected will see me dancing with someone else and get angry."

Peggy rolls her eyes, "Who cares!? Live a little, will ya?" Before Eliza could respond, she was dragged to the dance floor.

"No, Peggy-"

"Shut up or I'll kill you," She threatened. Afraid of losing her life, Eliza simply obeyed her younger sister.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted her elder sister being approached by a man. She smirks to herself before focusing on dancing.
