Chapter 9
Soraru hadn't expected himself to be called on. Out of everyone in here it just had to be me? He wasn't the only one confused, soon other students started to talk around him and express their thoughts.
"Soraru playing? What a joke, I bet he doesn't care at all."
"It could've been anyone, but they had to chose the delinquent."
"Great, we're going to lose now."
"Why can't they just play without him?"
Soraru glared at some of his classmates, causing them to quiet down. He sigh, it can't be helped, and walked towards the court with a bored expression. Mafu and the others looked at Soraru as he walked.
"I wonder if Soraru can play?" Senra remembered about how Sakata said that the raven-haired wasn't athletic.
"Well knowing how the other students are, I don't think they'd let the ball get near him. Pretty sure they'd just hog it." Amatsuki rolled his eyes as that was pretty much what they were going to do anyways.
Mafu looked at Soraru worriedly, they might try to injury him on purpose so he'd get out of the game. Urata and Shima watched Soraru stand in the corner of his teams's side of the court.
Urata sighed, so much for trying to apologize during the game. He could only shake his head as he figured that Soraru wouldn't even play. Sakata stared at his brother before smiling to himself.
Maybe niichan will actually try his best since Mafu is watching. He noticed how his brother seemed to look at the albino a bit more often than before. The coach blew their whistle to signal the match was starting up again.
As Amatsuki said the ball didn't go near Soraru, who just stood in the corner with his arms folded and watched the ball bounce back and forth. The game went on, the 3rd years were behind by less than 10 points and only a few minutes left.
One of the 3rd years tried to hit the ball but it went over their head and headed towards Soraru. He noticed the ball and bumped it back with enough force to get it over the net. The teachers tried to hit it back but missed, resulting in the 3rd years getting the point.
The students looked at Soraru with shock. They hadn't expected him to actually try and play. Soraru just gave them a emotionless stare before turning back to the game as the ball was in motion again. He was able to score points and soon the 3rd years were three points ahead the teachers.
Sakata smirked to himself, I knew it he is actually trying to play this time. Soon all the negative comments the classmates were making about him started to turn positive as they began to cheer for him.
"Go Soraru!"
"You can do it!"
"He looks so cool!"
"That was a nice spike."
Lon sighed as she heard the cheers from her classmates. They really have lightning fast change in attitude. She rolled her eyes at how people in the school only treat others nicely when they happen to do something that they agree with or like. She had seen it time and time again that at this point she isn't surprised. Lon wasn't the only one unsurprised by the cheers from students.
The guys also sighed at the school's whiplash towards Soraru. Funny how one moment they think you're the scum of the earth, the next you're like a god. Mafu could only shake his head at them.
The volleyball match ended with the 3rd years winning. Sakata was going to go congratulate his brother for playing but saw that he was soon surrounded by other classmates and students.
"That's was so cool Soraru."
"Hey are you single?"
"Please go on a date with me!"
"I've always been watching you from afar."
"Wanna hang out later?"
Soraru just ignored them and walked by, not sparing them a single glance. So now they decide to like me? Soraru thought sarcastically as he left the gym to get a drink because he was tired and thirsty from playing. Right now there was a small break before it was the 2nd years' turn to go against the 1st years. As Soraru left the gym, the chatter became lively.
"Did you see that? Soraru looked like those bad boy type of guys from a manga."
"He's so handsome."
"He isn't dating anyone right?"
"I heard he's dating Lon but they don't act like a couple so it's probably not true."
Lon was happy that the rumors of her and Soraru were beginning to disappear but she was disappointed that it was only because the students now think that Soraru deserved their admiration. Urata and Shima went towards the guys who were talking about the match too.
"Well should we go congratulate our new famous star?" Shima joked as he pointed towards the door Soraru left from.
"Yeah or else he'll be swarmed by classmates again and we won't be able to talk to him."
Sakata began to walk ahead towards his brother while the others followed behind. Soraru was walking back to the gym with a water bottle in his hand when he meet up with his brother in the halls.
"You did a good job niichan~"
Sakata ran up to hug his brother, who stumbled back a bit and almost dropped him water bottle.
"Oi! Be careful!" He playfully scolded his little brother who just giggled in response.
"Eh? Wait Sakata you just called him 'niichan' in school." Amatsuki worriedly said causing the redhead to come to the realization.
"Oops~ I guess since I've called him 'niichan' in front of you guys, I just got used to calling him that when you guys are around." Sakata sheepishly said.
"No one's here so it's okay," he reassured the others.
"You're an idiot you know that?" Urata bluntly commented on the redhead's carefree action.
The said redhead just waved it off and smile at his brother.
"Anyways, you finally decided to not be lazy and actually try. I wonder why~"
"Because if I didn't then you'd have pestered me for not even trying." The raven-haired male looked at the smiling redhead in front of him with annoyed eyes.
"True~" Sakata let go of Soraru, "well break's almost over so we should go back."
He began to walk back to the gym as the second match would soon start. The others praised and congratulated Soraru for his performance in the match. It embarrassed him a bit, since he wasn't used to being praised, but he just nodded and thanked them.
"You did really great Soraru. You looked so cool during the match." Mafu smiled at him.
Soraru looked at the albino's bright smile and blushed, he then turned away from him to avoid his gaze.
"T-T-thanks...." Soraru stuttered with his words, confusing himself with his action.
Eh? This is the first time I've stuttered because of a small comment. Why am I embarrassed about being congratulated by MafuMafu? But his smile when he said it was cute....
Soraru used the back of his hand to try and cover up his embarrassed face, he didn't want anyone to see his cheeks turn a dust of red. Mafu managed to catch a bit of his red covered cheeks and blushed himself as he thought Soraru looked cute embarrassed.
Urata was behind the two and only narrowed his eyes at their interaction. Something definitely had to have happen to them yesterday. There's no way Soraru would be acting the way he is right now if nothing happened between the two of them.
He glared holes at the back of the raven-haired as he was trying to figure out what could've happened to have made him start acting a bit nicer to Mafu. Plus in the back of his head there was the thought of how Mafu would blush whenever Soraru was around.
Urata normally wouldn't mind at the idea of Mafu liking someone, but when that someone was Soraru, who is known and seen to act violent at times if it meant protecting Sakata, he was worried that the delinquent might end up hurting his albino friend.
I guess I'm starting to understand how he feels about being overprotective of someone. Urata saw Mafu walk ahead to talk to Sakata, leaving him and Soraru alone in the back. I guess it's now or never. Urata took a deep breath and opened his mouth to speak.
"That was a nice performance."
"Eh?" Soraru looked at Urata puzzled, he hadn't expected the brunette to talk to him.
"I said that was a nice performance. Are ya deaf?" Urata remarked.
"Oh, thanks."
Thanks? That's it? Urata was always frustrated when it came to talking to Soraru. It's like talking to a brick wall, nothing is going to happen.
Urata decided to calm himself, this is for Mafu. Just relax, don't get worked up about it. He was taking a deep breath to calm himself but was interrupted by a voice filled with sassiness and smugness.
"If you're trying to apologize, don't bother. I don't care."
Urata felt his veins pop and soon cross popping veins began to appear in his head. He was getting fed up with the delinquent's blunt words. This fucki—
He cut himself off, at least Soraru could understand what he was trying to do. He was going to apologize quickly and his job would be done. At least that was the idea until his mouth decided to betray his thoughts.
"You think I want to apologize. I'm only trying because Mafu wants me to." Urata's voice was aggressiveness and dripping with irritation.
"Same here. Sakata was telling me how you said sorry after I left you guys that day. He said that I should accept your apology but I doubt you care about it. I'll just accept it so Sakata can stop worrying about it and he can be happy." Soraru gave Urata a smug look as the brunette glared at him.
He enjoyed teasing the brunette and watching him bark back against him. Most people get upset or offended by his blunt words and poison tongue, Urata, however, uses his own poison tongue to bite back, amusing the raven-haired.
"Fine. I'm so sorry for saying things about you without understanding the reason behind your actions." Urata's voice was filled with sarcasm, well only in the beginning.
He did feel bad about judging Soraru before learning why he acts the way he does, but as if he was going to say that out loud. He'd rather die than give him the satisfaction that he won.
"I accept your apology," Soraru's words were dripped with the same amount of sarcasm as Urata's.
"But don't think that I'd act buddy-buddy with you now tanuki. Like hell I'd do that."
Urata could see the smug smile on his face and glared at him for calling him a tanuki.
"Same here. I still despise your attitude." Urata returned the smug look back.
He was glad that he at least apologized to him, even though it was more like a fake, forced apology. Both of them could tell the truth behind the sarcasm and brutal words. If anything they seemed to have gotten rid of the tense, awkward atmosphere around them. Now it was just a rivalry between them.
They made it back to the gym, right in time as it seemed the teams were getting ready to start. Mafu turned to see Soraru and Urata glaring at each other, but now the glare seemed to like they're saying 'I'm better than you', the type of look between two frenemies. He also noticed the atmosphere around then wasn't like a war zone.
They must've made up finally, he smiled as he walked back towards his spot. Senra, Amatsuki and Sakata followed him while Shima and Urata went back to their side, and Soraru went back leaning against the walk. Only this time some girls stared at him with lovestruck eyes, while others stared at him too, with admiration.
The volleyball game ended, the 1st years won by only a few points. They changed back into their uniforms and went back to class. Amatsuki was whining about going back to doing schoolwork while Senra just sighed at his antics. Sakata joined Amatsuki in whining and Senra gave up on them and was on his phone.
Mafu could guess that he was texting Shima, as the blonde would smile and blush. Mafu didn't pay attention to class and let his mind drift off. Urata finally apologized to Soraru, that's great. I don't have to worry about the two of them trying to kill each other.
The rest of the school day went as usual, well at least in some way. Now while the guys were leaving the school they heard gossip about Soraru. However, this time it wasn't words dripped with venom, as if saying Soraru's name left a bad taste in their mouth.
Now it was gossip about how great he is and how people were beginning to act like kiss-ups towards him. They parted their ways and went home with the thought that their schools days were going to be more hectic now.

A/n
Here's the next chapter~~ so Urata and Soraru now have a friendly rivalry. If you want to imagine how it's like just think of Ash and Gary from Pokemon. Pretty much similar to their rivalry. Also looks like the school now appreciates Soraru.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
