For The First Time
(OKAY SO I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL THESE PROMPTS/IDEAS IN FINDING ON TUMBLR)
(This is an AU where some people are born colorblind and the only way they can see colour is when they touch their soulmate and it's absolutely incredible so I had to do it.)
(Akko POV)
Achromatopsia. Total color blindness.
I don't know how, but somewhere in my family history someone had it, cursing me with the same fate.
The only thing I want in this world is to see a rainbow. I know they're beautiful, but I've never seen one myself.
"Akko? Akko!" I'm pulled from my thoughts as Diana Cavendish looms in front of me with a not-so-pleased face.
"W-What?" I ask, blushing with embarrassment.
She sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"I asked if you could hand me that pen under your chair? It rolled off of my desk a moment ago." she says, pointing at my seat.
I look under my seat, picking up the fountain pen and holding it out to her.
She reaches for it, our fingers brushing slightly. For the slightest moment I'm overwhelmed as new, unfimilaiar shades take form around me.
Diana has yellow hair and blue eyes.
Wait.
I can see that!
She looks at me with a raised eyebrow, placing the pen in her pocket as the colors fade and I'm back to seeing black and white.
"Did... Did you just.... Did you see that?" I ask, blinking rapidly as if I could somehow will the colors back into view.
"See... what?" Diana asks, clearly confused.
I sigh, gathering my things.
"N-Nevermind. It's not important." I say, standing to leave.
Well, maybe to me it is. I think as I exit the room, a tear in my eye as I realize that was probably the only time I will ever have a chance to see color.
(Diana POV)
What just happened? I think panickedly.
When Akko handed me my pen, it was as if all the colors suddenly popped and got more vivid, more vibrant and bright.
But as soon as I pulled away, it was gone, as if it never happened.
Was I imagining it? Did Akko see it too?
Akko couldn't have seen it, she's colorblind! Am I going crazy?! I start to panic, combing a hand through my hair.
I head back to my room, determined to get to the bottom of this.
Chromia-Lovelus-Phonia. (Not a real thing, I made it up.) Where one is born colorblind until they meet their soulmate, triggering their eyes to have the ability to see in color for the first time.
Could... this be what Akko has? I wonder, staring down at the book before me.
But if that's true... Why would it affect me? Am I... No, I can't possibly be her soulmate...
My face slowly starts to heat deeply at the prospect of being soul mates with Atsuko Kagari, the girl I've had a crush on since we were kids.
I put my face in my palms in an attempt to cool my burning face as I hear laughter from the end of the library.
Akko.
I quickly stand from my seat, moving swiftly towards the exit to avoid seeing her.
I turn a corner and nearly slam straight into her, staring deeply into her eyes as I feel my blush return.
"Diana..." she starts, reaching her arm slowly towards me.
I reach my hand out as well until our fingertips are slightly touching.
Her eyes widen as the colors seem to jump to life before me.
"Can... Can you see this?" Akko has tears in her eyes.
I nod slowly, smiling at how cute she looks when she's filled with joy.
"Oh my gosh! So this is real? This is actually happening?!" she's slightly jumping up and down, glancing all around the room as our fingers still touch.
"Yes, it's real. Do you know what this means, though?" I ask, referring to the whole 'soul mates' thing.
She shakes her head, still distracted with whatever she was looking at.
"It means.... I'm your soul mate." I say, my face burning as I resist the urge to pull my hand away in embarrassment.
"Like, for real? As in like in the stories and stuff?" she asks, looking deep into my eyes.
I nod, biting my lip.
"I understand if you don't feel the same way but I-" I'm cut off as Akko leaps towards me, wrapping her arms around my neck as she pulls me into a deep kiss.
I immediately kiss back, wrapping my arms tightly around her waist as I lift her to my height.
She pulls back, tears in her eyes.
"Oh my gosh, Diana. Of course I'm happy. Thank you so much. I can finally see!" she whispers in a breaking voice, tears threatening to spill violently from her face.
I take one hand, gently wiping her eyes as I feel my own become wet.
"I'm so happy too. I love you, Akko. I'm so happy you're my soul mate." I tell her, caressing her cheek as I stare lovingly into her eyes.
~~~~~
(Akko POV)
Today is my birthday.
Diana says she has a surprise planned for me.
I finish getting ready as I notice the rain was letting up.
I hope it stops raining soon. I'd hate for the rain to ruin Diana's surprise.
"Akko, are you ready babe?" Diana calls through the door.
I open the bathroom door and wrap my arms around her in a hug.
"Yup! Can I have my surprise yet?" I ask excitedly.
She giggles, gently pushing me back from her as the color fades once more.
"Not yet. You can't touch me yet, either. I want you to be completely surprised." she says with a wink.
Don't touch her? Then how will I see the surprise clearly? I think as I nod my head in agreement none the less.
She takes a gloved hand, taking mine in her own as the colors stay black and white.
I groan and pout in annoyance.
"C'mon, you'll ruin your own surprise." Diana giggles, making me giggle as well.
"Okayyyy." I sigh, rolling my eyes with a smile as she pulls me outside behind her.
We climb into her car as I sit up front, window down as the wind blows through my hair.
"We're here." she says as we park in some old grass field on the side of a hill.
I look ahead at what appears to be some sort of picnic at the hills peak.
"Diana, you didn't." I say in disbelief. She's always spoiling me.
"Yup. Now come on." she takes the gloved hand, holding it out to help me up the hill.
Once at the top we sit on the blanket against a tall tree, leaning against it as she pours two glasses of grape juice.
She hands me the basket as we begin eating.
All of a sudden she tenses, smiling widely as she stares straight ahead.
"Akko! Are you ready?" she asks, looking at me with excited eyes.
"Ready for what?" I ask.
"Your real surprise." she whispers, placing a quick peck on my lips.
She takes off the glove, placing her hand between us on the blanket.
I close my eyes, placing my own atop hers.
She guides my face with her other hand, kissing my cheek softly.
"Open!" she squeals happily, squeezing my hand.
I feel tears of joy threaten to spill at the sight before me.
The dark orange sun, beginning to set, as it gently hit the deep blue water of the lake at the foot of the hill. In the sky was an actual rainbow surrounded by peach clouds.
"Oh my God!" I cry, now full on crying with happiness.
"Do you like it?" Diana asks quietly, twirling her hair.
I turn to face her, studying her face for the thousandth time.
Her beautiful blond hair had an orange hue from the sun, her bright blue eyes sparkling through the shade of the tree, the gentle pink blush dusting her cheeks and the tip of her cute little nose.
I love both my hands to rest on the sides of her face, staring deeply into her eyes as I let out another sob.
"It's perfect. You're perfect. This is perfect." I say, crashing my lips into hers.
I have never felt so happy in my entire life than in this one moment.
