17: Faraway Fantasy Land

"Okay! Open your eyes!"

"You mean take off the blindfold?"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Just do it. I'm so excited for you to see this! Wait, what are you- ugh, just..."

Before you could figure out how to untie the knot at the back of your head, he pulled off your blindfold. When your eyes adjusted, you saw that he had lead you to the top of a hill. The breeze that seemed to be constantly blowing around Jeju felt gentler up here, your hair that was usually whipping around your head was much calmer.

There seemed to be more stars than you'd ever seen in your life, twinkling brightly even though they were so far away, and the moon seemed capable of swallowing you whole. Obsidian waves crashed faintly on the rocky shores below, and the wind that seemed to be constantly blowing around Jeju whispered softly in your ears, but those were the only sounds you could hear. You took a deep breath, and your lungs were filled with the scent of sea salt, fresh grass, and sweet starlight.

The magic was nearly tangible here. You kind of wanted to reach out and try to grab a star, because, honestly, it almost felt possible at a place like this.

And you were drinking in every second of it.

You spun in a circle, trying to take everything in. It was almost unreal, as if Jungkook had somehow whisked you off Earth and to a faraway fantasy land.

Everything seemed to be underneath you. That didn't make any sense, though. Did he bring you up Mount Halla? Isn't that, like, a 10 kilometer hike? You voiced that concern to Jungkook.

"Don't worry about it," he replied. "It's just a mostly unknown spot that happened to be within driving distance. It's pretty though, right? Do you like it?"

You turned to him. He was wringing his hands and seemed a little anxious. "Like it? How can you say such a thing?" You smiled a little at his widened eyes. "I love it, Jungkook."

The worry left his features. "Thank goodness. It took a lot of poking around the Internet for this, you know." He pulled a face, making you giggle.

"So." You clapped your hands, looking around. "... why did you bring me up here again?"

"Oh, uh, right. I'll be right back."

He grinned apologetically and started jogging to the silver car parked some distance away. You shook your head but smiled, turning your eyes back to the incredibly bright night.

"H-hey, Pepero! Can you help me with this?"

You turned around to see Jungkook struggling a few feet away with what seemed to be a large picnic blanket.

"Really, Kookie? A picnic blanket?" You wrinkled your nose playfully. "You're such a hopeless romantic."

"Hey, I know you're into this kind of thing," he protested.

"You're right. Where are the heart-shaped candles and rose petals, already?"

"Stoppp."

——

A guitar strummed softly from smartphone-quality speakers, courtesy of Jungkook's "super awesome playlist you'll love it." You and him were sitting cross-legged on the spread-out blanket, munching on snacks he brought and watching the waves down below.

"Are you gonna finish that?" you asked, pointing at Jungkook's half finished piece of bungeoppang. (a fish-shaped pastry filled with sweet red bean paste. basically taiyaki)

"Yes," he said, taking a bite.

"I'm still hungry thoughhh," you complained, balling up the slightly greasy paper sleeve.

"Yeah, sorry. I didn't bring anything other than this, 'cause I kinda panicked and only ordered one thing," he said, his face perfectly resembling a 😅 emoji.

"Don't apologize. You're all I need," you smiled and wrapped an arm around him.

"Ah, who's the hopeless romantic now?"

"Mmm, about that..." Then you leaned over and took a bite of his bungeoppang.

"Pepero!"

"Haha..."

"Hey, did you remember that it's our 300-day anniversary?" (Koreans often celebrate anniversaries every 100 days)

"Of course I remembered! Your gift is at home because I don't trust myself not to break it while we're here. What, are you saying I'm not a good girlfriend?" you exclaimed, clutching your heart dramatically.

"Not at all, I was just making sure!" he laughed, throwing up his hands as if you were holding him at gunpoint.

"Yeah, right," you said and punched him lightly in the arm.

"Ha, was that the hardest you can go?"

"Are you challenging me, Jeon?" you scoffed. "I wasn't trying to hurt you."

"Yeah, right," he said, parroting you from earlier, and pushed your shoulder.

"Hey-" You pushed him back slightly harder.

He pushed you again, not enough to hurt, but enough to make you fall on your side.

"That's it."

And then you jumped on top of him.

"N-ah! Pepero- Y-Y/N! Noo, ah! Stop it, Y/- stop- aaH-"

"You asked for it," you smiled innocently, not stopping.

"But- nAHh! Stop! No, no, I'm, aha, s-stop-"

You paused. He rolled over, clutching his stomach and gasping for breath. You let him rest for a few more seconds, but continued ruthlessly attacking immediately after.

"N-no! Sto-ah! Ahaha, I-I-I- stop! Aah! Stop tickling me! Y/N!"

You pulled away for a second. "Yes?"

"Lungs... hurt... ah..."

"So, what do you say?"

"Wha...?"

"You pushed me over, Kookie, and that hurt my feelings," you said, tilting your head and making puppy-dog eyes.

"Ah... s... sorry..."

"That's better."

"You suck," he grumbled, sitting up and smoothing out his shirt.

"..."

"Y/N!"

"Haha. Um, it's getting kinda late-"

"Wait!"

"What?"

"Uh, I'm gonna, uhh... can you close your eyes?"

"What? Wait... ew, why didn't you go before we left?"

"No, it's not that! Ah, just close your eyes."

You rolled your eyes but covered them with your hands. You heard the grass rustling faintly as Jungkook got up and jogged away, then some more rustling when he came back.

"Okay, now open them! Or, like, lift your hands or whatever."

You took your hands away and looked down.

A white box, about the size of a decorative pillow, topped with a humongous blue bow. That's what was in Jungkook's hands. He held it out to you expectantly.

You just stared at it.

"Uhm... what do you want me to do with this?"

"I dunno. How about you take it and open it?"

"Oh, it's for me?"

"Obviously. I'm holding it out to you, right?"

"Mm, right." You blushed at your stupidity and took the box from him. It was a little lighter than you expected. The blue bow easily came undone, and you pocketed the ribbon to throw away later or something.

Hesitating, you glanced up at him for confirmation, and he chuckled and waved you on.

You cradled the box with one arm and slowly, very slowly lifted the lid.

Holy crap.

You tentatively poked it. Oh my god, it was so soft.

Holy crap.

You immediately set the box down and took it out, holding it up so you could see the whole thing.

The moonlight made the deep blue silk glow, the tiny rhinestones on the sheer chiffon looked right at home against the nighttime sky, and the whole thing was so freaking majestic you didn't feel worthy of touching it. Since you were on your knees, the fabric spilled onto the dewy grass, so you quickly jumped to your feet and held it higher.

Holy frickety frackity freakin' crap.

Your eyes randomly wandered over to the box. Written on the inside in neat black marker was one word...

'Prom?'

You turned to him, wide-eyed.

"Jungkook..."

"It's okay if you don't want to I would totally understand if somebody else already you know because you're like really pretty so of course I'd have competition I was just asking in case you wanted to but don't be afraid of telling me no I wouldn't get hurt maybe just a little bit but it wouldn't be too much I-"

You shut him up with a kiss.

"You're the sweetest, kindest, most amazing little bunny I've ever had the good fortune to meet," you said gently, once you'd pulled away. "How in the world do you think I can refuse you?"

He blinked.

"Yes," you said, for extra clarity. "Yes, yes, what part of Y-E-S do I need to explain?? I, Park Y/N, would love to go to the senior 20XX prom with you!"

Slowly, almost carefully, he broke out into his signature bunny grin.

"Now, that's what I'm talking about."

——

"Did you do it?"

"Yeah!"

"Alright! Baby Kookie's finally grown into a big boy!"

Jungkook had raised his hand to high-five his brother, but abruptly sat down onto a hotel armchair so that Junghyun slapped only air.

"Hyung! I'm not a baby."

"You'll always be a baby to me," Junghyun grinned, leaning down and pinching Jungkook's cheek.

"But I don't like it when you call me that," Jungkook said, puffing out his cheeks so that his brother couldn't keep hold.

"Yeah. Only I'm allowed to call him that," you said, pushing Junghyun out of the way playfully and pinching Jungkook's cheeks yourself.

"Hey, how come Y/N gets to do that and I can't?" Junghyun complained, plopping down onto the desk chair and rolling halfway across the room. "Totally unfair."

"Because she's mine, and I'm hers, and it'll be that way forever and ever," Jungkook said, wrapping an arm around you and pulling you onto his lap. You grinned and booped his nose. He booped you right back, and it soon turned into an all-out boop war with lots of giggling and squealing.

"Mom's gonna kill you if you have a tiny Kookie running around in a few months!" Junghyun called from across the room.

"Shut up!" Jungkook exclaimed.

"That goes for you too, Y/N!"

"Y/N!"

"Y/N!"

"What do you want, Junghyun?" you mumbled.

"Kook. Jungkook, not Junghyun."

You blinked and felt your cheeks heat up. "Oh. Sorry. I kinda spaced out."

"Yeah? That's called being Jungshook."

"... sorry?"

He laughed. "ARMY, our fanbase, is constantly making up tons of memes." He took out his phone and showed you that one iconic Jungshook gif that the author is sure everybody knows about.

Your eyes widened. "What is this, I love that-"

"Yeah! There are a ton of other cool ones out there as well. ARMY will literally get anything remotely interesting and change it into a meme. Like how Hobi hyung doesn't like snakes, Jin hyung's pasta and pizza, Jimin hyung's jams... or rather, lack of..."

You picked up Jungkook's pencil and scribbled in a blank corner.

"Wha-"

"That's my number, in case you're too lazy to look for it. Save it. Send me as many memes as you can."

"Oh. Okay. Okay, I can do that. I'll send you one right now." He took out his phone and tapped a few things.

Your phone vibrated.

"Jungkook, no."

"Jungkook yes."

You rolled your eyes. "I asked for quality memes, not... whatever this is."

Your phone vibrated again.

"Wh-wha-" you sputtered. "How did you send that, you weren't even on your phone!"

Another buzz from your phone.

"Kook?"

"Yeah?"

"What the heck."

"Yeah!"
