Something Like Normal. II

JOCELYN

I watched around the class room of googly eye girls who would be drooling if their mouths weren't closed as Yuri smoothly introduced himself to the class. I couldn't help be a little jealous but I can't let myself show that I am.

“And I learned four languages in my life. Russian, Italian, Spanish, and English. ”, he finished.

Mrs Harvey who looked to be having her cheap purple eyeshadow eyes googling at Yuri. “Not even I could make it threw a second language, you must be very smart.”

“I enjoy learning new languages and cultures.”, Yuri said.

“Trust me, it become annoying.”, I couldn't help say as I smirked at my Russian friend. “Don't let him fool you, my Italian is better than his.”

“Says the girl who forgot how to say bread in Italian.”, Yuri chuckled and I just rolled my eyes.

“Well it's nice to have you with us this year, Yuri.”, Mrs Harvey said.

“Tell us more about Moscow.”, Lauren said and just looking at her annoyed me to be in this class. We use to be friend back in elementary school, but when middle school came around and she thought she was to cool to be my friend after getting her period first and become obsessed with becoming popular, she dumped me and now we're enemies after she humiliated me in seventh grade by calling me a 'fatass' and made her Sprite drink fall onto my lap at lunch time. “I have always wanted to go there to see the buildings. The Cathedrals, I mean—wow!”, she chuckled.

“Moscow is like every other city, big. To a tourist it's beautiful but if you have lived there for a long time, it's just another normal city.”, Yuri said. “And I haven't been in many of the Cathedrals, I am not very religious.”

“Huh, then coming here was a bad idea.”, Lauren said. “There is a reason why this town is called Genesis, it's very religious here.”

“I have notice and I have been burned every time I walked into a store.”, Yuri sarcastically said. “Jocelyn forced me once into a church back in Rome, I fell asleep five minute into the chanting while she was acting like she was in Heaven.”

“So how'd you to meet again?”, Lauren asked, masking how annoyed she was that Yuri was talking about me.

“Later.”, Mrs Harvey said. “We got to move on with the rest of class.”

YURI

“I cannot eat this.”, I told Jocelyn, putting the fake pizza down on the plate. “I am sorry, but I miss the pizza back in Rome. That has no taste.”

Jocelyn smile big. I always knew when she was actually happy by her smiles; she would open her mouth, showing those perfect straight teeth when she was happy and she would keep her mouth closed if she wasn't really happy. It wasn't long until I notice that when I met her. “I did warn coming back here with me would be a bad idea.”, she said, taking a bite of her hamburger.

“I promised you I would go everywhere you go.”, I reminded her.

She nodded, “I know but now I have to share you.”, she said. “I'm amazed we're alone right now, you know since you have all these groupies.”

“Groupies?”, I asked, chuckling. “I don't know what that is.”

“Groupies would be a group of girls who are obsessed with you.”, she said. “You have fans here, Yuri. It's not everyday a Russian kid just walks into town. Any European actually.”

“Hmm, you didn't seem very impressed when you met me.”, I said, chuckling. “You even said I was Ukrainian.”

She chuckled, “Both of your accents sound the same and we was in Europe, I was expecting to meet every country there. And you were rude to me, you really think I would care about your accent?”

“I was having bad day.”, I said. “You weren't very friendly either then by the way.”

She just smiled and closed her mouth. She looked down at her hand for a second before looking back up at me, “Were you having a bad day because of your father?”, she asked hesitatingly.

I bit my bottom lip for a moment, “You know I only have bad days when it comes to talking to him.”

“I keep trying to wonder why you never talk about him.”, she said. “What did he do, Yuri? You only ever say bad things about him.”

I sighed heavily, “It's about what he didn't do, Jocelyn. He never cared about me.”

“I'm sure that's not true.”, she said.

“I don't want to talk about my father.”, I told her a little to coldly, making me feel bad when I saw the hurt look on her face. I reached out and took her hand, “You are the only few people I know who cares about me, Jocelyn. I'm glad to be here with you.”

“Why does it seem like your mom right, though. Like your running from whatever your problems are.”, she said.

“I had no real friends back in Moscow.”, I told her. “You know why I left.”

“I just want to know more about you, Yuri. You know everything about me and your life is like a mystery to me still.”, she said.

“I understand but—“

I cut myself off when I saw someone come over by the table and we both looked up to see the blonde guy who locker is next to mine. What was his name again? Buck? Something stupid like that. I felt Jocelyn hand slip out of mine and she cleared her throat.

“Sorry, did I interrupt something?”, he asked and I felt very annoyed by the question when it was obvious that we were talking.

“I don't know, did he Yuri?”, Jocelyn asked, giving me that look letting me know she was annoyed.

I shook my head at her, “No.”

“Oh well, hey Yuri man do you think I could talk to Jocelyn alone for a second?”, he asked.

I wanted to say no and to go away but I didn't want to come off jealous. Why should I be jealous of some guy name Buck? Just because he is Jocelyn ex boyfriend  doesn't mean anything, he just wants to talk to her.

But why is this little voice telling me I know what he wants to talk to her about.

“Don't mind asking, he might not tell you.”, she said and got up. “Lets go talk over there.”, she said, pointing her chin over at the other end of the lunch room.

I wanted to start an argument just to get her to stay here with me instead of going with cowboy here but I knew she would hold the fight against me until I apologize and I wont apologize for not wanting to share her with some guy. I held my tongue though and I watched as she left with him.

I was watching them talk when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out my jean pocket and saw it was my dad number. My eyebrows came together and I got up, leaving the lunch room to somewhere quiet.

JOCELYN

“So what's up?” I asked

He sucked his lips in for a second and chuckled, bring his hand up behind his head to scratched nervously, “Just thought we catch up, haven't spoken in awhile.”

“You mean when the night you left me alone at Estrella Diner?”, I asked, crossing my arms and his smile dropped

“Look Jocelyn, I'm so sorry about that night.”, he said. “I was a total asshole to you I know but I was broken hearted.”

I scoffed and rolled my eyes, “Not what it seemed when you yelled at me calling me selfish and you said you never really even cared about me.”

“I only said that cause I was mad.”, he said. “You were leaving to go to Italy in a week, how was I suppose to be happy when my girlfriend going off to another country and I wouldn't see her in a year?”

“You knew Italy was my dream and I could never of had a chance again.”, I told him. I was about to open my mouth to continue auguring with him but what would have been the point? More hurtful things might be said and I didn't want to fight with Buck.

“And you bring back a Russian guy?”, he asked, angry again by his tone, and I gave him a shock You-Got-To-Be-Kidding-Me look. “How could you do that?”

“Yuri is my friend and I didn't ask him to come, he came himself.”, I said. “And why does it matter to you? You broke up with me.”

“Your not even the same girl I knew.”, he said, looking at me up and down, completely ignoring me. “The Jocelyn I knew would never wear expensive brand name clothes. He brought you that stuff, didn't he? I hear his parents are rich back in Russia.”

“It's been over a year Buck, a person can change that long.”, I said. “And it doesn't matter where and how I got these clothes. I'm not going to stand here and argue with you.”, I said, walking away from him and when I was walking back to the table, I didn't see Yuri, confusing me.

YURI

Privet.”, I said to my father as I answered when I got to a quiet space.

“Nice of you to talk to me for once, Yuri Gavril.”, he said and I closed my eyes with annoyance. “I didn't even know you started school.”

“If your manager would text me back, you would have known.”, I said.

“My manager has nothing to do with this.”, he said, sounding like he was trying to control his attitude.”Your mother was the one who didn't give me your number. I didn't speak to you since you told me you wanted to go to America and that was a awhile ago.”

“Is there a reason you called, papa?”, I asked. “I'm sure Arina is expecting you for dinner soon.”

“Leave your step-mother out of this.”, he said and I rolled my eyes. “And I called my son to wish him good luck like any father should do.”

“Okay, well you called.”, I said.

“Yuri!”, he said, his voice hard. “I need to talk to you, so cut it out with your attitude, I am still your father and you wont talk to me like that.”

I wanted to let all my anger out on how he was no father to me. I never had a father in my life, “Okay.”

“I wanted to tell you very soon I will travel to America in three weeks. I have to go to New York but I thought I could stop off in that small town you are staying in and see you.”, he said

“Wow, you can actually make time to see me?”, I sarcastically asked and he sighed heavily. “Bringing the wife and children?”

“It would be nice for Eva and Leo to see their big brother.”, he said.

“Fine, fine.”, I said, not wanting to say anything about my spoiled little sibling. “Why are you coming to America anyways?”

“I have a premier I have to go to.”, he said, catching my attention.

“Whhhy?”, I asked slowly.

“Well if you didn't start a fight with me every time I call you, you would know I starred in my first American movie and it's coming out in three weeks called Catcher. I'm sure with how much you spend outside you don't spend much time watching TV to see the trailer and that I'm playing the bad guy.”

My body froze, my blood turning cold as i gripped onto my phone as my eyes widen. “You're what?”, I asked, shocked. “You never told me about a movie here!”, I said coldly.

“You never give me a chance!”, he said, yelling. “What is the big deal?”, he asked, sighing heavily.

“You are going to ruin it for me.”, I said.

“What—“, I didn't let him finish before I hung up the call and brought my knuckles up to my mouth, trying to think of what I just learned. Jocelyn knows my father name is Vladmir Abramov but didn't know who he was. I had kept his stardom a secret from her because I was afraid she would treat me differently. She is the first person who I could be myself around.

It was easy to hid it back in Italy, mostly everyone at the school was from somewhere else, so they didn't know who I was either. If she found out who I was, it would be like it was in Russia. And if everyone here finds out I'm the handsome Russian action star Vladmir Abramov son, I will never have a chance to live a normal life.

I can't let Jocelyn see that movie trailer, I can't let her see that movie.
