~20~
Prince sat on the cold hospital floor still sobbing with his head down in his knees. This man was fighting all the evils that crossed the Paisley Park threshold with what fell like a pocketknife in the middle of a gunfight. His soul was screaming for someone or even....some thing to help him. He was getting far to weary carrying his hurt emotions in for so long and he could feel everything bit of tearing apart like a thin sheet of paper in a shredder. What was happening to his own little corner of the world that was considered to be his safe haven? Who is this shell of a man he's now become before he met his fraudulent spouse? Where can he go from here now that he has hit the bottom. The answer to all of his questions was standing just down the hall at the nurses station filling out a visitors pass to see her long time friend for herself and her in home travel companion Tony. Once she was done she quickly turned on her heels to find the unexpected. The man who had raised her since she was adopted.
"Oh no..... Tony!" Carlyn called as she took off down the hall and dropped down to her weeping father's side.
Tony was only steps behind her and met Prince on the other side facing the nurses station.
"Daddy? C'mon. You're stronger than this. Stand up." She said in a soft and calming tone.
Prince continued to cry as Carlyn and Tony stood to their feet and helped Prince off of the floor and in to a chair across the hall. Tony stepped away as Carlyn sat beside her father and continued to console him in her arms.
"Come on dad. Please don't cry. Whatever it is we can....we can fix it. You don't have to go through this alone."
"I do my sweet dove. I do." He said in a sad a broken tone.
"Daddy no you don't. You have me and Tony! And even Joey! All of us! Regan is even gonna help you get through this. We're all here for you just like you've been here for all of us. This is just a small setback in the grand scheme of your life. Come on daddy. You still have that chance to put that S on your chest and save the world. You've been a hero to me.....to Joey.....to Regan! Don't give up the good fight just yet. We need you. I need you."
Carlyn wiped the tears away from Prince's face with her thumbs and raised his head. Prince looked into his daughters' eyes and could see her passion for him to keep going. He smiled and gave her left hand a gentle squeeze against his face.
"Thank you my dove. I don't know what I would have done without you." He said to her pulling her head to his.
"You'd probably still be sitting on that cold hard floor. You know that's not good for you dad." Carlyn chuckled.
Prince shook his head and then turned to Tony.
"Tony my man."
"Ye-yeah boss?" Tony replied in a nervous voice.
"Tell anybody what you saw here today and you're fired." Prince said to him sternly.
"My lips are sealed sir." Tony replied.
Prince giggled a little and shook his head.
"Relax my friend. You know I wouldn't have gotten this far without you. What sense would it make to fire you. You're family! You know that you'll always have a job with me."
Tony let out a sigh of relief and smiled.
"I know boss. Should I get you anything?"
Prince thought for a moment and then turned to his daughter who was still holding his hands.
"Get my attorney on the phone. I need to deal with this marriage situation and keep it from getting out to the press."
"I'm on it." Tony said and made his way down the hall to do what was asked of him.
"Daddy I'm so proud of you!" Carlyn said as she hugged Prince tightly.
"Let's just hope you stay that way my dove." He said.
"I can never stop being proud! How's Nali? Any news? Did her surgery go ok?"
Prince hesitated to answer but he knew that he didn't want to be the one to give such bad news knowing that his own daughter had her own troubles to deal with.
"I think you should go in there and talk to her. It's not my news to give." Prince said to her and kissed her forehead.
"Well if you want.....you should go up and see the baby. Mom and Tre are up there.....but that's only if you want to."
Prince smiled and stood to his feet.
"If you want me to.....I'll go see my grandchild."
"Fifth floor last door at the end of the hall on the left."
Prince smiled once more at his glowing daughter as she waved to him. His heart was aching to see the new addition to the Nelson family but at the same time didn't want to see the newborn so small and surrounded by tubes and machines. Putting his fedora on his head he made his way to the elevator and waited as it's doors slid open to greet him inside. Stepping in and pushing the button to get to the NICU he took a deep breath and counted to 10 in his head. Nothing could prepare him for what he was about to see when he met his granddaughter for the first time. Was it going to be just like when his own son Amir was born? Could it actually be worse? How was be going to be able to hold himself together when he gets to see the innocent face that was abruptly brought into the world? All he knew was that it was his daughters wish to see her baby.
"Alright Skipper. Get it together. Be the Superman your kids know you to be." He whispered to himself.
The elevator stopped and the doors slid open once again where he was met by a blinding white light. He raised his hands to Shield his eyes as a cool breeze rushed across him. Slowly taking a step Prince was able to open his eyes just enough to see a figure standing in front of him.
"Come daddy!" A small voice said in the distance.
The child like figure then banked left down a small corridor giggling the whole way.
"Wait." Prince said softly.
The child was still giggling as if it was all a game to them. Prince came off the elevator and followed the figure.
"Hey! Wait! Stop!" Prince called but was unsuccessful to keep up.
"Daddy come on!"
Prince continued to follow the sound of the voice until he reached the end of the corridor and was met with a black curtain.
"Hello?" He called but didn't get a reply.
Prince pulled back the curtain and was met with the most wonderful vision of love he had ever seen. He fell to his knees as he once again looked upon the face that was identical to his own.
"My boy!" He said as tears filled his eyes again.
"Hi daddy!" Amir said with excitement as he ran into his fathers arms.
Just as Prince was about to look upon his son one more time the sound of machines filled his ears. Prince was still on an elevator but he was finally at the NICU floor. He shook off the memory and wiped his tears. Taking a deep breath he stepped off the elevator and found his way to a small room where Regan was waiting. She could tell that her friend was very shaken up.
"Skipper? You ok?" She asked.
Prince cleared his throat and shook his head.
"Can I.....can I see her?" He asked.
Regan simply smiled and led the way. Prince's heart was never more overwhelmed with love than it was the moment he laid eyes on Princess Regan Erinalia.
"She's so.....precious! And so tiny!" Prince said as he smile at her.
"And the name fits her perfectly!" Regan said as she gave him a nudge.
Regan and prince watched and Tre took the tiny child out of her isolate and into his arms.
"Would you like to hold her dad?" Tre asked.
"I would love to!" Prince said with excitement.
Regan gave Prince a sterile gown to put on over his clothes and he sat down in a rocking chair in the corner of the room. Tre laid Princess in his arms and it was almost immediately where she opened her eyes and smiled at her grandfather for the very first time.
"I love you too my little dove." He said to her.
Prince was finally getting his life back one piece at a time. All from a simple look in the eyes of a child.
