~16~

The safety clicked as Regan threw her blood covered hands in the air as a sign of surrender. Karen stood with shaky hands as she kept the gun pointed and aimed if square for Regan's heart. The two guards who were once standing at the end of the hall also had guns out as well. Regan was rather confused than scared and didn't know what to ask. Did she do the right thing by sticking up for Karen? In her heart of hearts she felt it was deemed necessary but in Karen's mind at the end of the day she's only here to protect herself and her sister.

"Karen?" Regan called to her softly.

Karen had her fingers wrapped around the trigger just tight enough to put more fear in an already shaken up Regan.

"Karen? Talk to me. Why? Why are you doing this? I- I'm trying to help you. Your sister isn't well and you know that. So why protect her?" Regan asked.

"You don't understand!" Karen replied as her eye welled and her voice began to break.

"Then help me understand! She's not supposed to be here! You of all people know that!"

"McKenzie is still my sister and you shouldn't have hurt her! You don't know what she will do now! I do! That's why I have to do this."

Regan stood still confused and shook her head slightly.

"Karen. No you don't. You don't have to shoot me. You are not her. You know that don't you?" Regan asked trying her best to sound as convincing as possible.

The two guards began walking up with their guns still draw a as if they were ready to shoot Regan on sight.

"Guys what are you doing? You know me! What's going on?!?!?" She asked fearful.

Regan was never one to fear security but this time she felt as if her time was up and Karen had them going against her.

"Karen please! Call this off! I did what I had to  do to protect you! Why can't you see that?!?!?"

Karen released the safety and the gun once again clicked.

  "KAREN!!!!"

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Karen whispered through her tears.

"MISS REGAN GET DOWN!" One of the guards said.

Regan quickly dropped to the ground and soon after rounds of gun shots went off like fireworks. A frightened Regan covered her head as bullet casings fell down around her. When the gun fire finally ceased Regan felt a hand on her right arm. The hand wasn't one of the guards. But Karen's. Regan looked up at her and saw her sobbing and teary eyed face.

"I'm sorry Regan. I'm so sorry." Karen wept.

Regan sat up on her knees and took Karen in her arms.

"What happened? Why would you want to shoot me?!?!?" She asked as she hugged her tightly.

"It wasn't you that I was aiming for." Karen said as she cried out even more.

Regan felt a cold chill run up her back and she let Karen go to look at her face.

  "Wh-what? I don't- I don't understand."

"I would never want to shoot you.....or anyone....except....."

Regan looked over her right shoulder and saw what she thought was just a figment of her imagination. A lifeless Tori laying in front of Carlyn's bedroom door. The two guards were already standing by her. She was still breathing but barely conscious. They were already on the radios calling for an ambulance and to get in contact with Prince to let him know what was going on in his home. It wasn't long before the ambulance arrived and placed a neck brace on Tori and loaded her up on a stretcher. As the wheeled her out Regan lead Karen out as she held her close while she still cried out of her own guilt.

"Everything's alright now." Regan said to Karen as she consoled her.

"I want to be with her." Karen said.

Regan let her go and looked at Karen with great concern.

  "Karen I don't know if that's a good idea."

"Regan she's still my sister. I want to be the last face she sees if she...."

Regan felt a pain in her heart as she watched Karen's heartbreak grow in her eyes. She knew that she was doing Prince and everyone in his camp a favor if it was her to confirm she had passed in the hospital.

"Just- be careful." Regan said as she gave her a sad sigh.

Karen nodded and climbed in the back of the ambulance. Regan watched as the team shut the back doors and they sped away to the nearest hospital. Just as they left the gates a black car sped towards her. The tires came to a screeching stop and Prince flew his door open and ran to Regan quickly and took her in his arms.

"Mouse are you alright?!?!?" He asked her in a panic after seeing her hands covered in blood.

"I'm fine I'm alright." She said to him and hugged her friend tightly.

"Are you sure?" He asked her still worried.

"Yes Prince I'm sure. I'm ok. Really."

Prince let out a deep breath of relief and loosened his grip around her waist.

"I got here as fast as I could. What happened to your hands?" He asked as he timidly took them into his.

Caressing her knuckles over the dried blood he looked in her eyes and was still very worried about her.

"They met with you fake wife's face." Regan joked trying to lighten the mood.

She knew that there was always a way to calm prince down and even though it wasn't a way she would use it helped to use the current situation. It was able to get prince to smile and shake his head a little.

"How's the baby? And Carly? Are they alright?" Regan asked.

"The baby is fine but Carlyn is a wreck still. I just wish there was something I can do." Prince said dismayed.

  "There is." Regan replied.

Prince looked into Regan's eyes and was thrown off a little.

"Just continue to love her and be there for her."

The two smiled at each other and Prince pulled Regan close to him and hugged her tightly once again. His eyes were watering up with tears. He was never more grateful for Regan than he was at that moment. Down in his heart he knew that Regan was right about him all along. His heart wasn't meant for Tori. It was meant for her.
