There wasn't a more perfect way to share the most exciting news. Carlyn and Tre were about to become parents and there was no better time than the day of her wedding to make the big announcement to unsuspecting family and friends. All the ladies in the room were elated to find that the princess of Prince was about to experience motherhood.
"Oh Prince is going to probably turn purple himself once he finds out he's gonna be a grandpa!" Rene said ecstatically as she gently hugged Carlyn.
"Hell I'm about to turn pink! Or maybe blue?" Cat giggled.
"Mom what do I do? I don't know the first thing about having a baby! What if I'm not a good mom? What if I'm not strong like you?" Carlyn said in a rather disappointed and afraid tone.
Regan wiped her tears with a tissue and sat down beside her anxious daughter.
"I didn't know the first thing about being a mom either. That is.....until you came into my life. Prince and I had both gone into this thing blind. Prince was so scared to be a dad when he adopted you and your brother that he called me and asked me a million questions. I didn't know any of the answers so I just thought of and told him what my parents did for me."
"You did? What did they do?"
"The only thing they could do. They loved me."
"That's all?" Carlyn asked her mother confused.
"That's all. Well.....they did have to handle the financial side of things but why do you think I am who I am today? Why do you think you are the person you are? Before your dad came along you felt like you had to carry that chip of your shoulder but once he gave you all the love you were missing you softened your heart to give that same love back. Look at what's happening to you right now. You're in a beautiful custom made dress about to marry a man that is willing and able to spend the rest his life with someone who came from a rough patch and into a field of amazing opportunities and things you probably never thought you'd experience! And now look! You are going to be a mommy! Sweetheart don't be afraid of any blessing that is given to you! I know it sounds crazy but you will be a wonderful mom and amazing wife."
Regan took Carlyn by the hand and assured her that everything would be ok and gently patted her tears from her eyes to avoid ruining her makeup. It made Carlyn smile just from the action alone and the room was suddenly full of teary eyed women. All except for Tori who just remained in the corner quietly and watched from afar. Regan stood up and smiled at her daughter.
"Now. Feel better or do we have to have another pep talk and reschedule this wedding?"
The women giggled a little as Carlyn shook her head no then stood along side her mom.
"Thanks. I feel a lot better now. The only thing now is......how should we tell daddy and Tre?" Carlyn asked.
"Oooh don't you worry about that. It's gonna come out when the toast happens. I feel like it's not your father that's going to lose his mind. It's your good old uncle Andre. You know how he get when any major change happens in your life." Cat said as she fixed the straps to her dress.
"Oh gawd." Regan joked as if she were disgusted.
"MOM!?!? Leave uncle Dre alone he's.....gotten.....better I think. He's married now." Carlyn said with a smile.
"That won't stop him! Let's hope his wife is pretty!" Regan laughed.
"She is she looks just like you." Rene giggled.
"No she doesn't." Regan replied.
"Oh yeah she does! Only difference is that she's shorter and a lot lighter."
"So she's white?"
"Yup! Your sister from another mister girl!" Cat chimed in.
"I wanna meet this girl! I hope and pray that she can keep him in check." Regan said as she fixed her eye liner.
"Wait until you hear her mouth. I thought your tongue was reckless. She's WAAAAY worse." Carlyn laughed.
Everyone laughed as someone knocked on the door.
"Don't come in we're naked!" Carlyn joked.
The door came open and in popped Joey's head to check in on everyone.
"I know that trick Carlz. It didn't work when I was seven and it definitely won't work now." He laughed.
"What's up buddy?" Carlyn asked him once he came fully into the room and closed the door.
"I just wanted to see mom before we had to take our places. It's almost time and I'm so worried about this song. I just don't wanna mess it up." He said as he hugged Regan tightly.
"Oh baby boy you will be just fine. And if prince says something and makes it even sound slightly the wrong way I will beat him." Regan joked.
"Nah it's ok. I'm sure dad just wants it perfect that's all."
"That maybe true but your still a kid you have all the time in the world to become a perfect musician. You know your dad spent hours in your uncle's basement practicing that I had to pull him kicking and screaming into the real world sometimes."
"Seriously?"
"Oh yeah! Your dad has always been they type to never let up for anything. Why do you think his catalog is so......extensive?" Regan giggled.
"Well he is a hard worker. And he loves music. I can see him being like that as a kid." Joey smiled.
"I can tell that you want to be just like him. Just don't lock yourself away from the world ok? Promise me?"
"I promise mom. Well I better get downstairs. I'll see you guys. Don't fall on your face going down the aisle sis!" Joey laughed on his way to the door.
"Get out creep!" Carlyn giggled back as she watched her brother leave the room.
"Well ladies I guess we better get going to. There won't be a wedding if we keep holding up the bride." Rene said making her way to the door.
When she got there she had noticed what everyone else didn't want to mention until after the wedding. Tori wasn't dressed for a wedding. In fact she was dressed as if she was about to go out to a club to find a man.
"That's a nice....little.....dress....you have on
Tori? I wouldn't think you could wear something like that at a wedding. Especially in black."
"Oh! Thank you! I've had this dress for a long time. I didn't want to upstage the bride on her big day." Tori said with a smile letting the snide comment go in one ear and out the other.
"You're welcome. And don't worry dear you could never upstage the bride. Bride beats guest in glam any day of the week anyway." Rene shot back to her as she turned to Carlyn and gave her a wink before pulling the door open to leave the room.
Tori sat silent and watched Rene leave and immediately right after that Cat was next at the door.
"Ignore her. She's just mad because she had to walk down the aisle with Dez to the altar." She joked.
"Cute dress though!" Cat giggled under her breath and left the room.
Tori was beginning to feel the sting of the underlying attacks from the women that have been in Prince's life longer than her and it made her feel very uncomfortable. So uncomfortable in fact that her caramel complexion became a bright shade of red and Carlyn took notice but did nothing but smile like a sly fox. Regan noticed too and nudged her daughter.
"Be nice." She whispered in Carlyn's ear with a hinted giggle.
Carlyn took that comment as give that shove over the edge and hopefully Tori would take a hint and leave.
"Well missy let's get you and this ridiculously huge dress out the door and in your spot. Don't want Tremaine thinking you ran away." Regan said as she helped Carlyn with her dress.
Tori stood out of her seat in the corner quickly.
"Here I can help you guys! I'm sure you don't want to damage the dress on the way out."
Just hearing her voice made Carlyn's blood boil and she belted out a loud deep "NO" throwing both of her hands up in front of her just to keep the distance between her and Tori. Tori was stunned. Her face was nearly pale and her eyes were wide and looked glassy. Carlyn soon realized what she did and had to soften her deep hatred for Tori to make it seem like she was only superstitious.
"No it's.....it's fine. I didn't mean to yell at you I just have a thing about wearing black at wedding. It's bad luck if they come together and not to sound like a bitch but I don't need anything bad to happen today. I hope you understand."
Both Tori and Regan wore surprised looks on their faces. Regan's surprise was more from the hidden dig about the short black strapless dress that Tori wore nearly exposing all of her cleavage. Tori took a step back and smiled.
"No no! It's ok! Nothing to be sorry for! It's your day and you're absolutely right. I'll just get the door for you. Sound good?"
"Yes Tori that's perfect. That's very nice of you." Regan said as she smiled watching Tori head for the door.
"Girl. Harsh." Regan whispered to Carlyn.
"Learned from the best." Carlyn whispered back as they discreetly bumped fists.
"All set!" Tori said.
Regan placed the vail over Carlyn's face and helped picked the train from the floor.
"Alright baby girl. Let's get you married." Regan said trying to hold back tears.
The two walked out of the room and headed down the hallway leaving a dismayed and confused Tori behind. Tori looked back inside of Carlyn's room at the chair she was sitting in and let out a deep sigh. The uncertainty of the relationship between her and the Nelson family women was going to be an uphill battle for her.
