⋆ 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗘 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪𝗦 𝗛𝗘 should be out of the car by now. The students gathered their things to get to their classes, hanging around the courtyard, watching the Dean give an announcement, and welcoming new students. He knows he should be out there, enjoying himself on the first day of community college, but instead, he's sitting in the car, staring at the steering wheel. His fists tightened around the wheel, Brooke's knuckles turning white.
"Okay, Brookie, it's just your first day at Greendale; you can chill and relax! Just... Take your seatbelt off, get out of the car━Jesus, stop being a coward! Just focus on your goals; don't have a mental breakdown already," Brooke whispered to himself as he rocked back and forth in the driver's seat. He glanced at the clock, seeing the seconds tick by, knowing that he would never be able to if he didn't get out of the car. Brooke's mind started to devise escape solutions, and his hand was about to reach for the handbrake before a loud smack appeared at his window.
"Holy fuck! Please don't rob me!" Brooke said as he jumped, the seatbelt stopping his head from hitting the car roof. His heart beat out of his chest as he peeked at a man standing outside his car with a massive smile. Brooke exhaled, trying to regain the air in his lungs before winding down the window.
"Please tell me you aren't here to rob me," Brooke said softly, his cheeks blushing from embarrassment, only to set the man tilted his head to the side, his tie flowing with his movements. The man gave a small chuckle, which caused Brooke to chuckle along with him, hoping it wasn't a ruse to take all his prized belongings. However, it was only his first day of community college, and Brooke was already embarrassed by his actions.
"Oh,━ your voice is very handsome... Hi there, buddy! I'm the Dean, Dean Pelton, and I thought I should let you know that the bell has already gone, and you have five minutes to get to classes! Also, has anyone told you you look very dashing with those glasses," the man, who had introduced himself as the Dean, said as he placed his hands on his hips. Brooke squinted his eyes, avoiding the sunlight, before looking at the watch and realising that his car clock was at the wrong time. Brooke frantically got his things together, trying to catch the books flying out of his bag.
"Sorry! Excuse me, ━ it's nice to meet you though, Dean, but I have to go," Brooke quickly said as he apologised, opening the car with the help of Dean Pelton, who stepped out of the way and closed the door behind him. The Dean smiled before waving at Brooke, who quickly shot down the sidewalks, nearly tripping over the bushes. He pushed up his glasses towards the bridge of his nose, scratching the back of his neck out of nervousness. He scrambled through his pockets, still keeping up his quick pace, to find the list of classes.
Going through the doors of Greendale, he slowed down to gather his thoughts. Brooke hadn't realised that he finally got out of his car and wasn't procrastinating anymore, but instead in the building where he would spend the next few years. Brooke sighed happily and chuckled about how stupid he felt a few minutes ago, not realising how easy it was.
"All I needed was a bald man to tell me I was late ━ Oh my god, I'm late!" Brooke's sudden realisation bolted him again towards his first day of class, ━ which seemed to be something about music theory that excited Brooke.
Before he could turn the corner to another hallway, he nearly crashed into another student. Brooke apologised quietly as he picked up the papers that the other student had dropped. Brooke's eyes stopped on the Spanish folders, raising his eyebrow.
"Oh, hey, you taking Spanish 101 as well?" Brooke questioned the other student, who nodded, taking the folders from Brooke's hands.
"Thank you. I thought this would be played out as a classic high school scene, where you end up being mean towards me, but I'm glad it wasn't that outcome. I'm Abed Nadir; I saw you sitting in your car before the day started. Oh, yeah, I'm also in your Spanish class, which answers your question," the stranger spoke, and Brooke sighed, glad to be meeting someone who was going to be familiar in classes.
"That's good to know━" Brooke started to speak before he rechecked his watch and bit his lip, seeing that the minutes were still ticking. He apologised quickly, and Abed smiled before walking in the other direction. Before the two parted ways, Abed turned around to face Brooke.
"If you are interested, there's a Spanish study group starting today; maybe you could come along," Abed said before turning away quickly and getting to his class. Brooke smiled, glad he could already be a part of a study group on the first day of Greendale. Maybe he would complete his goals already, but he didn't want to get too cocky about it.
━━━━━━
⋆ 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗘𝗗 how big this place was and was on the verge of being lost. He was also on the verge of a breakdown but kept breathing, his hand clamping up, clicking his knuckles for comfort.
He had found all of his classes, somehow, and now he was struggling to find the study room for Spanish. Brooke decided to take on the invitation to join the study group, even if he came from a family that spoke Spanish. He was ashamed to say that his mother tongue never came easy to him, and his family never got to correct him on it. So he lost his language, and he only knew English. But Brooke was determined to bring it back, one way or another.
"This is why I never ask for directions..." Brooke said as he grumbled, trying to peek through the blinds and find Abed's familiar face, but found only strangers. Brooke sighed as he bit his lip, looking around the library, becoming more frantic than he was this morning. Even then, his hair was frazzled from running his hand through his curls, but nothing calmed him down. He was not planning on having a mental breakdown, but he felt his body betraying him with every second he was wasting away.
Before he gave up and started to plan a sad dinner in his mind, eating takeout while doing homework until the early mornings, he heard his name being called from one of the rooms. He sighed a breath of relief and saw Abed waving from the doors. Brooke hurried over to the study room and walked in slowly, becoming shy as he grasped the messenger bag's shoulder.
"Hey, everyone, I found our missing 8th member; now, all we need to do is wait on Jeff," Abed said as he went to sit down at the table. Brooke awkwardly stood, not knowing which seat was available, but a brunette smiled as she waved and gestured to the chair on her right. Brooke thanked her quietly as he pulled out the chair, took a seat, and placed his books in front of him.
"So, you're new around here. I haven't seen you before," the brunette questioned Brooke, who turned his head to face her as he reached for his glasses. Before Brooke could respond to her question, another student entered the study room, and Brooke turned his body around to face him.
"You guys aren't going to believe this, but,━" the stranger said as he smiled before catching a glimpse of everyone surrounding the table. It seemed he was not expecting more people to show, but Brooke sat in his seat, straightening his back to make himself comfortable. "━the rest of the group is here..."
"Are you the board━certified tutor?"
"That means you do my homework, right, Seacrest?"
"I need to call my babysitter if we gonna be late."
"What board certifies a tutor?"
Brooke stayed quiet, not knowing what was happening. He awkwardly coughed as he reached for his books, opening to a random page, hoping to avoid what seemed to be conflict stirring up in the study room. He leaned on his hand, his beard becoming scratchy from growing for weeks, as he bit his lip again, a bad habit already developing.
"Where's Britta?"
"Not sure, but I invited more people from Spanish class. Is that cool? I also asked someone new around Greendale; he's nice; that's all I know about him," Abed said as he pointed over to Brooke, who seemed to have the spotlight on him. He gave a small smile and a thumbs━up before facing the stranger, who was gathering his things.
"It's... The... Coolest... I'm━ I'm gonna go to the bathroom... And bring my jacket, wallet and keys with me in case there's a fire," he said, grabbing his jacket before slipping out of the study room. Brooke raised his eyebrow, seeing him leave, before turning around to face the rest of the group that was also as equally confused as he was.
"Do we want to get started or wait for him to return?" Brooke said as he took his hand off his chin, reaching out to his books and staring at the cover. No one responded to him, but Brooke didn't take it to heart, seeing as they were already talking about something. Brooke started to drum his fingers, finding something to distract himself. He could feel the vibrations against the table and moved his head softly before stopping as the group wasn't speaking. He crossed his arms, stopping his fidgeting as he looked up at the faces of the group, who smiled at him.
"All right. Look at this crew! All ready to study all night," the stranger who had left previously with his jacket was back in the study room, sitting next to Brooke. Brooke nodded and gave a friendly smile before looking back at his books, becoming nervous for no reason, blaming it on his timid personality.
"I can stay at least till 10.━"
"But who studies with strangers, right? My name is Jeff," the stranger, who had finally introduced himself to the group, stood up, opening his arms. Jeff looked around and made eye contact with Brooke, who glanced back. There was a moment between them, only to be interrupted by the older man who had spoken earlier.
"Jeff, it's a pleasure. My name is Pierce Hawthorne,━" Pierce said as he reached for a handshake. Jeff climbed on the table, trying for a handshake, but Pierce moved back. "━And, yes, that is Hawthorne as in Hawthorne Wipes, the award━winning moist towelette. I'm also a toastmaster, so maybe I should do the introductions," Pierce said as he sat back down, with Jeff doing the same thing.
"You know Brittles━"
"Britta."
"Ay━bed? Ay━bed the Arab. Is that inappropriate?"
"Sure."
"Roy, Roy, the wonder boy."
"Troy."
"Little Princess Elizabeth."
"Annie."
"Uh, I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name?" Pierce said as he looked over to Brooke, who pointed to himself, unsure if he was talking about him. Pierce nodded impatiently, and Brooke cleared his throat.
"Brooke Flores━" Brooke started to speak, only to get a gutful laugh from Pierce. Brooke blinked out of confusion and looked at the others, hoping to get an answer from them. Unfortunately, Annie shrugged her shoulders, confused by the laughter, so Brooke was left in the dark.
"I'm sorry, your name isn't Brooke. Are you sure?" Pierce said as he raised his hand towards Brooke.
"Well, my parents gave it to me, so I'm sure," Brooke chuckled, which got a bit of a laugh from the other group members. Even Jeff, who seemed uninterested in being there in the first place.
"It's just... Well, it's a girl's name," Pierce said before laughing, thinking he was humourous. Brooke sighed, not wanting to press it anymore, seeing that it would become a huge issue, and Brooke was not a person for conflict. Although he didn't want to admit defeat to Pierce, he knew there would be more battles to win.
"And, finally, this beautiful creature is named Shirley," Pierce said as he touched each other. Shirley straightened her shoulders, and Brooke couldn't help but feel uneasy, watching this action unfold before him. He shuddered and instantly felt terrible, so he crossed his arms and looked back at the books before him.
"Is that even close?" Jeff asked Shirley, who gave him a look, and Brooke raised his eyebrow.
"I'd like to know why I had to find out about this group on accident," Annie said as she looked over to Jeff, who forcedly smiled.
"Oh, this is getting way more like Breakfast Club now," Abed said as he looked around, trying to think of possible casting calls.
"Love that film, Emilio Estevez━ I mean, great film," Brooke said as he quickly covered his tracks, but no one was focused on him except for Abed, who nodded in approval for pop culture references. Brooke sighed in relief, trying to catch up with the rest of the conversation.
"Okay, um, maybe we should get started..." Britta said as she opened her Spanish book, only for Jeff to close it and face Annie with a focused look.
"You know, I've been a part of many study groups that fell apart because of unresolved tension. Shouldn't we address Annie's concern? Did we not invite her?" Jeff said as he looked around the group, hoping to get some answers. Brooke shrugged his shoulders, not involved since he was the one who got invited to the study group.
"Well, Annie, sweetie, it's not behind your back━"
"Can we stop with the 'pumpkins' and the 'sweeties'? Being younger does not make me inferior. If anything, your age indicates that you've made bad life decisions," Annie snapped back, and the response took Shirley aback. Brooke's eyes widened as he opened his mouth like a goldfish, shocked by the conversation.
"Shirley has a response to that," Jeff said as he pointed to Shirley, holding her bag close to her chest.
"Mmm, mmm..." Shirley shook her head quickly, and Brooke leaned closely.
"It looks like you do.
"Shirley, go ahead!"
"Okay, okay. Um... I'm sure I've made some... Some bad life decisions. And maybe Annie's decisions will be better━ uh. Still, I think she needs to decide whether to be considered a child or an adult because children get pity but not respect, and adults get respect. Still, they also get the back of their head grabbed, and their face pushed through jukeboxes," Shirley began to speak, but with each sentence, she was getting angry. Brooke slowly got back up from leaning close, eyes still widened.
"Okay! Why don't we try learning 'jukebox' in Spanish?" Britta said as she tried to divert the conversation back to the original topic of the study group. Brooke nodded quickly as he opened his Spanish book, only for Jeff to close it down, his hand grazing Brooke's. Brooke started into space. His body froze at the thought and cleared his throat, but he returned to reality when he noticed Pierce leaning forward, touching Shirley's hair.
"Pierce, what the hell?" Brooke spoke as Pierce darted over at him, looking confused, not knowing what he was doing in the first place.
"What are you doing?" Shirley shouted at Pierce, and he jumped back.
"Pierce! Let's discuss this creepiness."
"Pardon you?"
"What are you doing?" Britta peeked over at Jeff, clearly furious that Jeff was again diverting from the original topic. Brooke sighed, slipping down as he looked up to the ceiling.
"This is going to be a long night..." Brooke whispered to himself, rubbing his eyes out of tiredness before fixing his glasses.
"Are you unaware that Shirley finds your advances inappropriate?"
"What advances?" Pierce said innocently, which made Brooke scoff out of laughter and shock.
"You have been sexually harassing me since the first day of class," Shirley said sternly to Pierce, who placed his hands up in defence. Brooke gritted his teeth, crossing his arms out of frustration.
"Sexually harassing? What? That makes no sense to me; why would I harass somebody who turns me on?" Pierce said as the group groaned, pointing out the irony in the sentence that came out of his mouth.
"Saying she turns you on is harassment, dude!" Troy said, and Pierce scoffed as he turned around, facing him with a look in his eyes.
"Hey! I am a prominent business leader and a highly sought━after dinner guest, and I will not take courting advice from some teenage boy!"
"Well, this teenage boy is a quarterback and a prom king!" Troy said before giving thumbs━up, pointing towards him. At this point, Brooke became a fly on the wall and leaned against his hand, doodling on the refilled paper. Jeff chuckled as he pointed to one doodle of a sausage dog with a top hat. Brooke smiled before giving Jeff his pencil, which, as a result, got him to draw the bowtie on the dog.
"You're not prom king anymore, Troy. This isn't Riverside High," Annie groaned as she pointed to Troy, who was taken back and confused.
"How'd you know I went there?"
"Because you're still wearing your stupid letter jacket! More importantly, I sat before you in Algebra," Annie said as she nervously fiddled with her pencil. Brooke caught on to this act pretty quickly; he knew of all the different nervous habits because he had tried all of those habits.
"Were you that girl hooked on pills and then dropped out? You're little Annie Adderall!" Troy said a bit too excitedly, and Annie's reaction to that didn't go so well, seeing that it was something almost shameful for her to admit.
"Okay, guys, isn't this going a bit too far━" Brooke started to speak, only to get interrupted once again by Annie, who looked furious and on the edge of breaking her pencil.
"And you're a stupid jock who lost his scholarship by dislocating both shoulders in a keg stand!" Annie shouted at Troy, who became very defensive quickly.
"Keg flip! They're tough to pull off!"
"Don't talk to me."
"You don't know; I'm a legend."
The group all started to argue amongst themselves, and Brooke and Abed were the only ones who weren't part of the conversations. Brooke began whispering some Spanish numbers, the words somewhat mispronounced but still recognisable, trying to understand his family's language. Abed slammed his hand on the table, making Brooke flinch without realising it, his hands close to his chest, trying to protect himself.
"You know what I got for Christmas? It was a banner year for the Bender family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me; he said, 'Hey, smoke up, Johnny.' No, Dad, what about you!" Abed shouted, which slowed the table's argument, giving focus to Abed. Brooke exclaimed to himself, sensing that it was a familiar quote.
"Well, uh... That actually was from The Breakfast Club."
"Nobody puts Baby in the corner."
"Dirty Dancing," Jeff said as Abed gave a thumbs up before Jeff reached into his pocket, his phone vibrating.
"Hello? What's wrong with your voice?━" Jeff said before he sighed and hung up the call. He stood up, leaving his jacket this time. "━I'll be right back. But it would help if you guys had this stuff out while I'm gone. No stone unturned. Go," Jeff said before quickly rushing out of the study room.
"Oh no, don't leave me━ , oh dear," Brooke said as the argument started up again. Brooke started to drum his fingers again, this time the noise not being able to be heard by the other study group members.
━━━━━━
⋆ 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 more than a few minutes, and Brooke had found himself repeating the exact Spanish phrase repeatedly because he had kept losing his place. Somehow, he hadn't lost his cool with the study group, which was good because he didn't want to lose this budding 'friendship', but it seemed to be dissolving on its own.
"Wow, guys, did you know that por favour cállate means, please shut up? How long have we been on the same argument? 3 minutes?" Brooke said as he spoke to the group, only for it not to be heard because of the argument. Finally, Brooke raised his books to his head and softly hit his forehead, which seemed to sum up the current feeling.
"All right, everybody! I wanna say something," Jeff said, returning from god knows where he went. Brooke quietly cheered, glad that the arguments were finally over.
"Well, you don't have to yell. I don't appreciate your tone," Shirley said as she shook her head, having a motherly tone towards Jeff.
"You know what makes humans different from other animals?"
"Feet," Troy said confidently, adding a smile to his face. Brooke looked confused and was about to question Troy, but Jeff gestured for Brooke not to press on.
"We're the only species on earth that observes Shark Week. Sharks don't even observe Shark Week, but we do. For the same reason, I can pick up this pencil, tell you its name is Steve, and go like this,━" Jeff said as he broke the pencil. Abed gasped at the sight of the pencil, and Brooke raised his eyebrow at what Jeff was trying to say. "━And part of you dies just a little bit on the inside. Because people can connect with anything, we can sympathise with a pencil, forgive a shark, and give Ben Affleck an Academy Award for screenwriting."
"Big mistake."
"People can find the good in just about anything but themselves. Look at me; it's clear to all that I am awesome. But I could never admit that because that would make me an ass. But what I can do is see what makes Annie awesome. She's driven. We need driven people, or the lights go out, and the ice cream melts. And Pierce, we need guys like Pierce. This guy has the wisdom to offer," Jeff explained, pointing to each person mentioned, and Pierce chuckled egotistically.
"The Dalai Lama and I..."
"We should listen to him sometimes; We wouldn't regret it. Look here at Brooke, who managed to survive his first day at Greendale with us and didn't stab one of us in the eyes while muttering numbers in Spanish! We need him to be the glue that everyone needs," Jeff said as he looked over to Brooke, who softly smiled before looking down at his lap, feeling giddy about being spoken like that.
"And Shirley, Shirley has earned our respect. Not as a wife, not as a mother, but as a woman. Don't test her on that because that thing about the jukebox was too specific to be improvised. And Troy! Who cares if Troy thinks he's all that? Maybe he is. Do you think astronauts go to the moon because they hate oxygen? No, they're trying to impress their high school's prom king. And Abed. Abed's a shaman. You ask him to pass the salt; he gives you a bowl of soup. Because you know what? Soup is better. Abed is better. You are all the better than you think you are. You are designed not to believe it when you hear it yourself."
As Jeff continued to speak, Brooke thought about his words carefully. His words meant something, and they targeted Brooke's heart specifically. He looked down at the doodles he had done earlier and smiled at the sausage dog with the fancy outfit.
"I want you to look at the person sitting next to you, and I want you to extend to that person the same compassion you extend to sharks, pencils, and Ben Affleck. I want you to say to that person; I forgive you," Jeff said as he turned to look at Brooke, who did the same.
"I forgive you." The group all turned to each other and apologised confusingly, not knowing why.
"You've just stopped being a study group. You have become something unstoppable. So I, at this moment, pronounce you a community," Jeff said with a small smile, looking at the group, trying to use a smooth voice to win everyone over.
"Oh, that's nice. I like that."
"This isn't like Breakfast Club anymore. Now it's like Stripes or Meatballs. Anything with Bill Murray."
"I agree with Abed that tonight has been very special. And now, excuse me; I have a dinner engagement with Britta. Britta?" Jeff said, looking to his right, but Britta smiled. On the other hand, Brooke gave a dramatic gasp respectfully, placing a hand on his chest.
"I lied. Thanks for calming everyone down. But since you're not a Spanish tutor, just a lying creep who purposely upset everyone in an attempt to get with me, I'd appreciate it if you left and stopped wasting our time. Everybody ready?" Britta said, cocking her head before opening her Spanish book.
"Fine! And I'm happy to report that one of the benefits of being a lying creep is having all the answers to tomorrow's test. And I'm happy to share them with anyone whose time I wasted more than they wasted mine━ except for Brooke, Brooke's cool," Jeff shouted before looking over to Brooke with a nod and walking towards the door, but Pierce stopped him.
"Uh, Jeff, if you have all the answers, why did you start this group?"
"I don't have a study group, Pierce. So I made it up."
"What about the 'Look Left' speech?" Annie said, speechless.
"Made it up! That's what I do. I make things up. And I got paid a lot of money to do it. Before I came to this school━shaped toilet, I was a lawyer!" Jeff said, and Brooke sighed, looking back at the doodles again, wondering if any of this was real.
"Oh, man, this ruins everything..."
"I thought you were like Bill Murray in any of his films. But you're more like Michael Douglas in any of his films," Abed said. Jeff scoffed and stormed out of the study room, taking his jacket with him. Brooke sunk in his chair, not expecting the study session to turn out like this. He looked over to the others, who were opening their books, and Brooke did the same, but he looked to the empty chair beside him and wondered where he had left.
━━━━━━
⋆ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 coming to a close, Brooke found himself yawning every few minutes. He made a mental note to himself to go to bed earlier next time, but he wasn't sure if there would be a next time for the study group. Brooke secretly hoped there would be because even if they seemed like a group of misfits, it was a good group of misfits that bonded with each other.
As he gathered his things, crumbled paper of Spanish sentences written out to be memorised being shoved into his bag, he felt nervous about the test tomorrow. Although he didn't think he was prepared for the papers, considering he had missed all the lessons beforehand, Brooke quietly swore to himself to start late at Greendale.
"Hey, Brooke, you coming?" Britta said as she stopped by the door. Brooke hadn't realised he was the last person to leave the study room. He quickly nodded as he put his bag over his shoulder and caught up with Britta, Shirley, and Abed down the library hallways.
"Oh, Abed, I wanted to thank you for inviting me to the group," Brooke said with a smile, and Abed gave a thumbs up in response, making Brooke do the same thing. Small conversations began amongst the four, and they approached the library doors. Brooke peeked over Abed's shoulder to see Jeff sitting on the steps, talking to Pierce and Troy.
"Shouldn't you be rolling around on a bed covered in test answers?" Britta said sarcastically to Jeff, but the papers he previously held were now scattered on the floor. They were empty, and Brooke slowly walked towards Jeff, sitting at the open spot.
"I don't have any of the answers. I'm going to━ I'm gonna flunk the test."
"If you study for an hour, it's not that hard. You seem pretty smart. You got a sports coat," Troy started to speak, but Jeff shook his head, biting his finger, and Brooke instantly sensed his nervous energy.
"Well, the funny thing about being smart is you can get through most of life without having to do work. So, uh, I'm not sure how to do that..." Jeff started to speak, and Brooke noticed that both Annie and Britta were communicating through signs and mouth words to each other.
"Please? So sad..." Annie pouted towards Britta.
"He makes me wanna," Britta mouthed back with a gagging motion.
"What's going on? Can you guys hear me? Am I deaf? Can you hear talking right now?" Abed said as he panicked, noticing the conversation happening behind him. Brooke quickly reassured him that he wasn't going deaf, shaking his head fast. Abed sighed as he nodded, mouthing a thank you back to Brooke.
"Jeff, we didn't get that far without you. So if you wanna come back upstairs..." Britta sighed before looking to Jeff, whose eyes lit up. "well, it is your study group, so..."
"Come on, let's study."
"Sounds good."
"Come on!"
"Pressure."
"I'm sorry I called you Michael Douglas, and I see your value now."
"Well, that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me," Jeff said to Abed as he followed the rest of the study group back inside the library. Brooke walked beside Jeff, their shoulders matching the same height.
"Oh, Brooke, what's the name of the dog?" Jeff whispered to Brooke, who, in turn, leaned his head close to Jeff with a smirk.
"Carlos, it's a funky name!"
"Carlos? Why not Wilhelm━"
"Really? I am not naming our dog Wilhelm; no, I'm sorry━"
