Ch. 19
Friday
Harry and Ginny still hadn't heard anything from Moony about the dreams, though, they had something else on their minds at the time.
They were both sitting with Ron and Hermione, unfinished pieces of homework littered around them and essays that needed revising or editing. The fire crackled contentedly and Ginny stirred in her sleep from beside Harry, Ron letting out a snore that seemed to shake the common room.
Harry rubbed his temples gingerly, turning to the page in his Herbology booklet about Plying Pumpernickel. He picked up his quill and dipped it in the ink, chewing the end before writing some notes on what potions this specific ingredient was best in.
Hermione vigorously wrote in her Transfiguration notebook, trying to figure out the difference in the spell that made a feather turn into a bird, and the incantation that turns Tooth of a Wolf into a house dog.
Harry returned to his notes, glancing over the next paragraph and sighing before writing the possible uses of Plying Pumpernickel in Healing.
He heard a snap and looked up to see a red faced Hermione digging through her school bag for a new quill. This disturbance fazed through the air like a bell, waking the sleeping Weasley's from their dreams.
Harry felt a pang of loss as Ginny raised up from being tucked into his side and stretched, her doe eyes scouring the extra large pile of homework in front of her. Harry looked away, aware of the stares he was getting from Ron and Hermione as he watched the red head.
The fire continued to crackle, providing a dim light to read and write by, but Harry couldn't concentrate. His thoughts kept drifting to the strange dreams and the pains in his scar he got mostly at night.
Ginny had told him to go to Dumbledore's office and ask for his parents so they could discuss these latest dreams. But he blatantly disagreed as Dumbledore wasn't even confiding in the pair themselves as to what the dreams meant.
This had led to a fight that he should have known he would lose. It continued from Wednesday to the night before, when Harry had compromised and asked Madam Pomfrey for two bottles of Dreamless Sleep a night, or a nice Calming Draught that the two would take with their tea every evening meal.
It didn't stop the horrid dreams of murder and fights, death and loss. No, the Dreamless Sleep didn't even stop them. So, the Bond Mates decided on calling it another name, the Visions.
Sirius had laughed at their name when they mentioned it, saying that they sounded so mystical even for a Wizard and Witch. And talking about how they would have to keep that name from Trelawney or they'd never leave the attic again.
So, every time the Visions would come, the one would send a message to the other, calling them to wake up before it was their turn to have a Vision.
They had figured out, that if Harry had a Vision, Ginny would have one right afterward. And if Ginny had a Vision, Harry would have one the next morning. They related this to Harry's dreams actually happening, as it was always the same time as when he awoke. If it was dark before he went to bed, it would be dark in the Vision.
This changed with Ginny, hers were completely random as illogical. She could have a Vision during Divination when it was bright outside and the sun was high, but during the Vision, it would be dark as it could be, or during sundown or sunrise.
They both spent many nights in the library before they tied this to Harry's Visions being during the present, that they were actually happening while he was dreaming. And Ginny's were the future, as there still hadn't been a report of a missing girl, or a man walking through the street with a jagged dagger in his hands.
Harry sighed again as he finished his Herbology notes and started on Potions. He was doing exceptionally well in all of his classes, except for Potions. It seemed that Snape was bent on making sure that Harry failed his exams, no matter what it took.
Several times that month, the Potions Master had taken Harry's potion and dropped it, or switched it, or spilled it, or knocked into it, spilling the contents or something into the mixture.
Otherwise, Harry, along with his favorite red head, made straight O's. Divination was exceptionally easy now, what with all the research he did with the Visions. Ginny knew everything in all her classes already, since she had been studying and working with the Golden Trio for the entire first term.
McGonagall was exceptionally impressed and actually let a few kind words slip to the Weasley on several occasions. She would pass Ginny's table and drop a parchment piece on the girls desk saying that nights homework, and she seemed to keep 'forgetting' that the specific pieces of parchment she had written the assignments on had a few helpful notes on the back.
Harry of course, knew all of this from Ginny. He was doing even better in his schoolwork against the year before because he had all the knowledge Ginny had from the year before and the year she was in. This made it easy on essays and extra credit.
She had it even better. Not only did she have all of her classes aced, but she also had a lot of Harry's knowledge from the next year from their Bond.
Harry dipped his quill in the ink well and started a new line, doing his best to not let his hand shake from the lack of sleep and nutrition he had. The only time he could ever sleep was in the Common Room, with Ginny. He supposed it had to do with the Binding, but the day that Ron finds out will be the day Harry is six feet under.
So, they had to compromise. They would both try to sleep, and if one of them finally fell asleep with no Visions, the other would take some of the exhaustion from the Bond and fall asleep as well. But if they had a Vision, the other would give an emotion such as restlessness or excitement and wake the other before walking down to the Common Room and falling asleep on the sofa.
A splash of rain flew against the window and Harry looked over to see grey storm clouds forming over Hogsmead. With raised eyebrows, he went over to the window and slowly opened it, causing a loud creak to sound and wake Ron who was falling back asleep.
A roll of thunder hit the town and lightning struck, the rain falling like sleet. Harry was surprised that with such cold temperatures, that it didn't freeze over fully. There was a cracking sound as the fire blew out with a sudden gust of wind.
Harry stumbled backwards, standing beside his friends though slightly in front of Ginny. They were all staring at the fireplace that was now cold and looked as if it hadn't been used in months, as not a timber or ash was heated. They were covered in frost.
Harry and Ginny exchanged glances before pulling out their wands, the other two falling suit as they creeped forward to the window.
"Ron" Harry said, "go get Professor Lupin. Now" There was a tone of seriousness that had Ron stumbling over himself to get out of the Portrait Hole.
A sharp gust of air broke through the window and the sound of glass freezing, cracks that vibrated through the stilled silence. Harry shifted slightly, noting how his hands were getting sweaty even through this intense cold.
Ten minutes and Lupin will be here. Harry reminded himself. The seconds ticked by and Harry felt a bottomless pit form in his stomach. He looked over at Ginny to see a perfectly, almost peaceful, stance. She held her wand level with her heart and her feet spread apart. Her chin was lifted into the air slightly, as if she were judging the creatures that were no doubt lurking by the window.
Five minutes. Harry gripped his wand tighter still, fidgeting as the cold ripped up and down his spine. He kept in his stance, one foot in front of the other, like he was ready to bolt. His wand was held loosely by his side, turned to the right so he could rush into some more complicated wand movements of needed.
Three minutes. The gusts of wind was blowing through the girls hair, forcing the scent of strawberries and flowers into his nose from Ginny, and the smell of parchment and what smelt like mint from Hermione. Mixed together with the rotten and death smell from the Dementors, it made his stomach rock.
He focused on his Bond with Ginny, giving her the feeling of happiness, a memory of laying the grass with the sun beating on their faces, a soft melody that was hummed by Harry into her ears, the smell of sunshine and fresh air. Freshly mown lawn and bark.
A laugh sounding from her mouth as she looked over at him, her eyes dancing. He sent it with all his might and let it fill him. Ginny's stance straightened, then relaxed as she felt a great deal of happiness. Harry looked over to Hermione who was biting her lip with uncertainty. He wanted to tell her the incantation, but was afraid of the consequences that breaking the silence would no doubt have.
He focused on the memory, wind blowing through his hair as he sat up on the hill and Ginny smiling at him as she made a flower crown again. Several birds singing in tune, laughter filling his ears and warmth flooding his heart.
He pointed his wand at the window. A shrill giggle as he picked Ginny up and jumped into the pond. The cool water touching his warm face as he floated on his back. Ginny splashing Ron so hard he fell backwards into a lily pad and came back up with it on his face.
He sucked in a breath as long fingers wrapped around the edge of the glass. A cloaked head brought the shrill scream to his ears. Ginny's scream. He wasn't sure if it was a real memory, but he didn't like it. Rolling down the hill like a barrel, feeling the grass stroke his face as he rolled.
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!" Shouted two voices. A lion burst from his wand, surprising him as he thought his Patronus was a Stag, like his dad's. He watched as another creature fell into step beside the lion. A lioness. The two animals bowled into the Dementor and the shrill screaming stopped as the creature ran away. His lion roared in triumph, earning a stern look from the lioness before the look dissolved into amusement.
The Patroni disappeared and Harry felt warmth flood the room as the fireplace lit, he whirled around to see Sirius, Ron, and Lupin staring at the Bonded with amazement.
They all stared at each other in a shocked silence before Ron spoke up. "'Mione? You alright?" He asked the pale witch. She nodded before sitting down in the chair closest to the fire.
Lupin dug in his pocket and came out with a chocolate bar, breaking off several pieces and handing them out, two to Hermione.
"That was a Dementor" Hermione said after nibbling on her chocolate slightly "It wasn't even supposed to be here. They live at Azkaban" She whispered. Lupin sighed and nodded.
"Yes, it seems we have quite the problem... That doesn't concern you four, this is to do with the Ministry, no snooping and trying to figure out what's going on" He said sternly, staring straight at Harry and Ginny.
"And... You two did a Patronus. And... They were natural mates... You two are soul mates? No one seemed surprised but Ron and I" Hermione said, looking at the Bonded.
Harry and Ginny exchanged glances. "I guess we have some explaining to do" Harry said. Ginny held back a smile before letting out a small giggle. Harry chuckled slightly and made her laugh fully, making him double over, making everyone else start laughing. It was times like this, during the darkest times, that Harry was glad he had these great friends. And that he had someone to share his burdens with.
At this strange moment, Harry Potter was filled with a happiness that he hadn't felt in a long time, a promise that things would move on. No matter what Prophecy stood in his way, there would be more of these moments where he could break down and freely laugh. Just laugh. And not be afraid of what is next.
Times that he truly felt like he could lift a thousand pounds. Times he felt strong. Times he felt love burn through the darkest hour.
Times he knew, it would be okay.
