Just open your eyes
The sofa was a little damaged but otherwise okay. The damage had been done when Chi had not so long ago almost lost control. Subaru had pulled it over into the right position and Ayato laid Yui down on it. Chi went to Kanato and hugged him. He hugged her back with one arm as Teddy was in the other. Reiji left to go to try and find a cure for Yui like he said he would. He hoped that if there was someway to stop the awakening then Yui would come to life again. Chi hoped he was right, it was the only hope she had of ever seeing her sister alive and well again.
"It looks like she's getting whiter." Said Laito after a few minutes of silence. Chi unburied her head from Kanato's chest and turned to see that he was right, she did look paler than before. Was this something to do with the awakening? She hoped Reiji found an answer quickly. Chi pulled away from Kanato and went to sit down next to Yui on the floor by the edge of the sofa. Her eyes were level with Yui's who were of course still closed. Chi reached out and gently took her sisters gloved hand in her own pale cold one. Her fingers moved to check for a pulse. Nothing. Kanato moved around the back of the sofa and looked down at Yui and Chi as he held Teddy close to him. Shu bent down to look at Yui beside Chi.
"She could awaken at any time." He said standing up.
"There has to be someway to drive the old bitch out of her." Ayato said to Shu from behind Chi but he got no answer and the five all looked at Yui in silence. Subaru was nowhere to be seen. He had left along with the knife that Yui used to stab herself with straight after he had moved the sofa. Laito sighed.
"I suppose I should go and find our Uncle." Richter and trailed off somewhere too. He escaped right from under their nose but one thing was clear. He wasn't dead.
"Laito...finish the job." Ayato said after him.
"Why of course." Laito replied with a sick smile and left the room. After he left Shu took a seat and Ayato took to leaning on the arm of the sofa at Yui's feet. Subaru had turned up again too but no one said anything to him and he said nothing back. Suddenly Yui arched her back and sounds of pain left her mouth.
"Yui." Chi said in a worried tone and she assuringly clutched at her sister's hand.
"It seems she's in a lot of pain." Kanato stated as everyone watched Yui wither in agony. Ayato walked over and knelt down beside Chi.
"Hey." He said directly to Yui. "Wake up." He'd done it before but no matter how many times he told her to wake up she never did. She moaned in more pain.
"What the hell is going on with her?" Subaru asked in his usual aggressive voice but there was a hint of tenderness attached to it this time.
"I suspect it's the awakening. It looks to me like it's already started." Shu answered.
"I'm a little worried because there doesn't seem to be any pressive situation. No mortal woman has ever awoken with the power of a vampire before right?" Kanato asked.
"That's right." Shu answered bluntly.
"What about Chi?" Ayato asked.
"Chi's a different story. She was never fully mortal from the beginning, she was always part vampire. That's not the case with Yui, she is and always has been nothing but a mortal." Shu told him. "The only reason it's never happened before is because no vessel has ever been able to endure the process."
"So it's completely different this time. She has that woman's heart beating in her chest." Ayato said looking down at Yui.
"I still don't understand how this is all possible. Ayato will you not explain it to me?" Chi asked him. Ayato looked at her and said nothing for a while but then he opened his mouth to speak...
"When Yui was a child Richter found her and implanted the woman's heart in Chi's infant body. Then she was delivered to the Church, then of course she came here with you and you know the rest." Chi thought back to everything that had happened.
"She had complained of chest pains from time to time and the first day we got here when we ran into the attic to hide she asked me about a woman standing outside. When I looked though I saw nothing. With everything that was happening I brushed it off and completely forgot about it until now." Everyone silently listened. "Do you think this could have been prevented if I had paid more attention back then?" She asked them.
"Probably not." Shu answered bluntly. "Even if you did know what was going to happen the only way of stopping it would be replacing her heart. Such a thing would be impossible now, when an infant her body would have been able to adapt very easily to a new heart. You'd been a professional to do such a thing now and even then it would be very dangerous."
"So this was always fated to happen then? Nothing I could have done." She said out loud.
"Tell me the truth...do you really think she is going to die?" Ayato asked suddenly. "Isn't there anyway we can save the girl?"
"Yes there is." Said the voice of Reiji as he appeared in the room. "But it's incomplete."
"Reiji, what is that you've got in your hand?" Ayato asked noticing the small glass vial in his hand.
"A custom made remedy that will kill that woman once and for all."
"This is unusual. It's unlike you to come forward with an unfinished product." Ayato commented.
"Why is it incomplete? What's it missing?" Shu asked.
"I believe that all I need it a piece of Cordelia."
"That's impossible. We disposed of every trace of that woman." Subaru answered him.
"We haven't actually. I have something." Kanato said suddenly. "I didn't want to do this but I feel I must. I said I wouldn't let Yui die because Chi would be upset." Then he took Teddy and ripped his head off. The inside of the teddy bear came out and Kanato rummaged inside it and pulled out a small vial. "Maybe you can use this. I don't need it anymore." He walked over and placed it in Reiji's hand. What was that? A piece of Cordelia? Chi's eyes widened. That was Cordelia's burnt remains. Kanato had been keeping them inside Teddy all this time.
"Is this what I think it is?" Reiji asked opening the bottle. He got no answer and simply placed the ash in his mixture. He swirled it around until the pink liquid inside turned and dark purple colour. Then he lifted it up and it suddenly turned blue. Suddenly a smile crossed his face.
"So that did the trick." Reiji handed Ayato the liquid and he undid the lid. Then unexpectedly he placed the whole thing in his mouth but didn't swallow. He walked forward and Chi instantly moved out of his way. She was nervous, this had to work if it didn't Yui was gone forever. She took Kanato's hand and looked down at Teddy who had his head tore off still. It was a little hard to believe he had really tore his precious Teddy's head off for her. Ayato knelt down and kissed Yui, letting the liquid leak from his mouth into hers. Yui instantly swallowed and they waited. When nothing happened straight away Chi's grip on Kanato's hand got tighter. Please work, she thought to herself. Ayato bent his face closer to hers again.
"Yui." He called softly. Then very slowly she opened her eyes.
"Ayato?" She replied.
"Hi." He said as Chi felt a flood of happiness and relief flood over her. Yui lifted her hand up and looked at it.
"I'm alive but I don't believe it. What am I doing here?" She asked him.
"Don't worry about it. There's no real need for you to know that." Laito had silently entered the room without anyone noticing. Yui looked around.
"You're all here. Chi..." She said weakly. Ayato moved out of the way and little and Chi came to kneel down.
"Hey, I thought I really had lost you there for a minute." Yui smiled at her.
"Are you still...staying away from me?" She asked nervously. Chi smiled.
"No, I think I've got a handle on things." Yui slowly sat up.
"What happened to the room?" She asked.
"That was entirely your sister's fault." Reiji told her. "It would seem she still cannot control her power or her emotions." Yui looked at them blankly.
"I'm so thirsty...I wonder why..."
