House On The Water
Salsa music played from houseboat in the New York Harbor. It stood up crooked but it was still floating from how banged up it looked it's hard to believe.
A small chihuahua named Tito dances to the salsa music as it played.
"Tito! Stop that racket! I'm trying to watch the show." The bulldog sitting in front of the tv said. Tito glared at him as the tv play and the bulldog lip sync it word for word.
"Hey, Frankie man, whatcha watching man? I mean, does he get the girl? What happens?" Tito asked popping up in front of the tv.
"Shut up, you little rodent." Francis said.
"Hey, man, this stuff is boring man. Come on, let's watch some boxing. I want to see some action." Tito laughed as Francis tried to swing at him with his paw.
"Hey, Frankie, ¿Qué pasó? You're getting slow, man." Tito laughed again.
"My name is Francis. Fran-cis. Not Frank. Not Frankie. Francis." Francis exclaimed to the chihuahua.
"No kidding, man? Hey, so what did you bring in today, "Frahn-cees?" Tito mocked.
"It's none of your business, you intrusive little pipsqueak." Francis scoffed.
"Look what I got." A Great Dane said coming over with a broken tennis racket.
"Oh, good show, Einstein. Now, all we need is the court and the net." Francis joked at the big dog.
"You think this place is big enough?" Einstein asked.
"Hey, what we need is some good quality stuff, man." Tito said throwing up a piece of leather with his nose and catching it in his mouth. "Check it out." He said.
"Oh, shredded leather." Francis commented.
"Shredded wha!? What you talking about, man? That's a primo wallet, man." Tito said.
"Rubbish, you mean." Francis said back.
"Alright, That does it, Frankie man. You insulted my pride! That means death!" Tito said.
"Behold, the runt." Francis mocked.
The two bickered back and forth until Rita came into the mix to break them apart. "Cut it out, you two." She said.
She looked into the chest that said 'Loot' written on a piece of paper. "Fagin's not gonna be too happy about this. So, Francis, you got the food, right?" She asked.
"Oh well, no, I..." Francis stammered. The three dogs groaned.
"Ahh, Frankie. It was your turn to get the food today." Rita said.
"It's newspaper burritos again!" Tito said.
"Hey, whoa, whoa. Cool it, Dodger fans. I'd like to introduce you to...your dinner. Hot dogs à la Dodger." Dodger said throwing them towards his friends.
"Hot dogs! All right, Dodger man!" Tito said excitedly. Unknown to Dodger, the orange kitten followed him to the boat house and he was right outside of it.
"You remain our pre-eminent benefactor." Francis said.
"Yeah. And you're okay too." Einstein said.
"So, how'd you do it this time, Dodgie baby?" Rita asked.
"Let me tell ya, Rita. It was tough. Only I could have done it." Dodger said.
"Did you have to fight, man? How many were there, man?" Tito asked him.
"Picture the city. Eighth and Broadway. The crowds hustling. The traffic roaring. The hot dogs are sizzling." Dodger said.
"I love a story with food in it." Einstein commented.
"Enter Dodger, one bad puppy. Not just out for himself, but community-minded. But he's not the only one out there." Dodger explained.
"Enter the opposition." Dodger added. Rita rolled her eyes and sighed knowing Dodger was over exaggerating. "A greedy, ugly, psychotic monster, with razor-sharp claws, dripping fangs and nine lives, all of them hungry." Dodger said.
Oliver was up top watching the dogs talk and Dodger telling his story that was not realistic at all.
"He comes at me, eyes burning. I knew my time had come." Dodger continued. "Suddenly...." As Dodger said that, the wooden planks that were on top of the boat snapped with Oliver falling inside. The dogs freaked out and ran or hid.
"Well, what is it?" Rita asked as Oliver struggled in a coat.
"Hey, man, check it out, huh?" Tito said sniffing it. One of Oliver's paws grabbed his nose. "It's a alien!" Tito exclaimed running from it.
"Cool it, guys. It's just a cat." Rita said baring her teeth.
"Ay, madre, un gato!" Tito said.
"Felis domesticus." Francis said. Dodger had a surprised look on his face. How did he not know the kid was following him?
"Now, how'd you find this place, cat?" Rita asked bearing her teeth.
"I-I followed this dog." He said.
"He's lying! He's lying! He's lying! He's ly-." Tito was cut off by Rita kicking him off. "Shut up, Tito!" She said.
"Why would a cat follow a dog?" Francis asked.
"Yeah." Einstein added.
"I-I just wanted some of the sausages I helped him get." Oliver said.
"He's a spy, man! Come on, let's eat him. You're dead meat, kitty." Tito said.
"But, I-I saw him come down." Oliver said looking over the boat then spotting Dodger. "Hey! That's him! Over there."
"Hey, kitty. What took you so long?" Dodger asked.
"Relax, kid." Rita said winking at Oliver and walking over to Dodger with the others.
"Dodger, razor-sharp claws?" Tito laughed.
"Dripping fangs." Francis chuckled.
"I kind of like those burning eyes." Rita mocked fluttering her eyelashes.
"Hey, keep it down, guys. The game's on." Dodger said trying to ignore the teasing he was getting from his friends.
"Oh, boy, Dodger. Top dog has to get help from a cat." Tito laughed turning off the tv.
"Hey, Tito, cool it, man." Dodger warned.
"Come on, let's see this big, bad kitty fight in action." Tito said.
"Hey, Tito, look!" Dodger said as Tito looked in a different direction making him stop teasing him. And Dodger pounced on him, causing a chain reaction dragging Francis into their horse play.
"Oh, boy! Dog pile!" Einstein said jumping on to them.
"Oh, what a bunch of overgrown..." Rita stopped when Tito was thrown and hit her in the back of the head.
"All right. That's it." Rita said. Barking and the sound of bottles breaking scared Oliver and he jumped into the chest of stuff as he watched to the dogs.
"All right, knock it off! Enough! What's the matter with you guys? Don't you understand? Sykes will be here any minute and I don't have..." Fagin said as Dodger and his gang spotted the dog treat he was holding.
They tackled him, licking him, happy to see him. "All right, settle down." He said. Car horn sounded outside the boat house on the deck.
"Sykes!" Fagin exclaimed. Outside two Doberman get out of a slick black car. Their names are Desoto and Roscoe. They walked in a great the gang as Fagin walked out with chest of stuff in his head to greet Sykes.
The two Dobermans chuckled as the walked over to Dodger and the gang. "You guys miss us? One of them said.
Fagin walked out on the dock to Sykes' car. He went around the car to driver's side window almost off the edge of the dock.
Fagin chuckled and said. "Hello. Oh, lovely evening. I was just saying this to your two lovely, purebred..."
Sykes cut him off. "The money, Fagin." Sykes said holding out his hand as Fagin gave him the chest full of useless things.
"Actually, I've got something much better than money. Some luxury items that should make a considerable dent in my debt to you." Fagin said as Sykes looked through the chest of items.
Sykes sighed roll back down his window giving back the chest to Fagin.
"I don't want your garbage, Fagin!" Sykes shoveling the chest at Fagin making him drop it into the harbor below.
"Oh, please, Sykes. Oh, please. Oh, please." Fagin begged.
"I don't think you grasp...the severity of the situation." Sykes said opening his car door making Fagin almost fall but he grabbed hold of the mirror.
"Oh, no! Oh, no, no, I did grasp it. This is how I grasp. Look." He said snapping of the mirror of the car. "Accident. Accident!" Fagin said almost falling but Sykes grabbed him by his shirt.
"Mr. Fagin!" He snapped.
"Sorry." Fagin said. "Now, I lent you money and I don't see it.." Sykes said.
"Do you know what happens when I don't see my money, Fagin?" Sykes asked rolling up his window on Fagin.
"People get hurt." Sykes said taking a drag of his cigar.
"People like you get hurt." Sykes said blowing out the smoke into Fagin's face.
"Do I make myself clear?" He asked.
"Clear! Perfectly clear!" Fagin wheezed out.
Back in the boat house, the two Doberman were talking to the gang well one was talking the other was sniffing around the joint.
"You know, Rita, I can't figure out why you'd rather hang around a dump like this, when you could be living the uptown with a class act like myself." Roscoe said to her.
"Isn't it rather dangerous to use one's entire vocabulary in a single sentence?" Francis commented.
"Hey, Frankie man, get down, brother. You bad, man." Tito said giving the bulldog a low five.
"Hey, you got something to say to me, fat boy?" Roscoe growled at Francis.
"Come on, man. You guys don't scare me. I'll kill you both, man. Come on, let me at them, I'll kill them!" Tito growled as Einstein held him back by his tail.
"Go ahead. Let him go." Roscoe mocked.
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?" Einstein said sternly.
"Like you, old man?" Roscoe said getting up into Einstein's face.
"Hey, Roscoe. Roscoe, is this us losing our sense of humor?" Dodger asked strutting up to the Doberman smugly.
"Nah. I ain't lost my sense of humor." Roscoe said kicking over the tv as the glass shattered. Oliver watched at parts from the now broken tv fully at him.
"See? I find that funny." Roscoe said with a smirk on his face.
Back in the deck, Fagin was begging Sykes for more time for him to come up the money that he owned him.
"Three sunrises. Three sunsets. Three days, Fagin." Sykes said.
"Three sunrises. Three sunsets. Three days. That's nine! Nine?" Fagin said.
"No, Fagin. Three days." Sykes said. Fagin has only three days to come up with enough money to pay back Sykes that means he's going to have to get creative to figure out his debt.
Sykes slammed on his car horn, signaling his dogs come back scaring Fagin over the dock and into the water below.
"Hey, Roscoe, look what I found." Desoto said pulling a newspaper Oliver was on out of his hiding place.
"Forget it, Desoto. We gotta go." Roscoe said.
"I like cats. I like to eat em." Desoto said. This scared Oliver which the kitten went into defensive mode and scratched the big dog on his nose.
Desoto growled causing both dogs to go after Oliver. Dodger slid in front of the kitten. Roscoe growled.
"Get out of my way, Dodger." He said.
"That's enough, Roscoe." Dodger said as the rest of the gang jumped in and around Oliver to protect him, growling at the big Dobermans.
The car horn sounded again. "Run along, Roscoe. Your master's calling." Rita said. Another car horn sounded.
"Come on, Desoto." Roscoe said. "We ain't finished, Dodger. You guys are gonna pay for this, starting with that cat." Roscoe said as the two dogs left the boat house.
"Oh, yeah? You guys don't scare me! Come on and say it to my face! Come on, come on, come on, come on." Tito said.
"Yeah, those creeps will think twice before hassling us, man." Tito added as Francis low fived him.
"All right, kid. What'd I tell you guys? Old Dodge can really pick em, huh?" Dodger asked giving Oliver a set up to a low five but pulled to back hiking his thumb.
A door creaked open as Fagin came in soaked. Mumbled about how he was going to make up his debt to Sykes within three day as Dodger and the gang comforts him. Oliver watched them in awe as the as they did so.
Seeing the love he never got to have. His mind drifted back to Charlie and the way they locked eyes with each other maybe he'll find her again one day.
"Thanks, guys." Fagin said to his dogs for comforting him through this tough times. Einstein licked him as he chuckled. "That reminds me. I saw Desoto's nose. Who did that?" Fagin asked.
Dodger grabbed Oliver by the scruff of his neck and held him up to Fagin and Fagin took him gently from Dodger mouth and placed him into his hands.
"You? You? That took a lot of guts." Fagin said scratching Oliver's chin as Oliver purred. "We've never had a cat in the gang before. We can use all the help we can get." Fagin said.
Then, Fagin stretched and groaned, cracking his neck relaxing into the chair he was in.
"All right. Time for bed. We've got a big day tomorrow." Fagin said as the dogs turned in for the night. Einstein want to her a story from the book he had in his mouth.
Fagin said 'no' at first but gave in when Einstein whined in sadness. The dogs, Oliver and Fagin fall asleep after reading with Oliver in Fagin's lap.
Oliver gravitated towards Dodger the most and looked around him to find him getting in his own bed made from a black rubber inter tube with pillows and a blanket.
Oliver jumped down from his spot in Fagin's lap went over to Dodger's bed passed Rita. He snuggled in Dodger's side.
He looked to Rita, who smiled lovingly at the small kitten. Dodger gave in and let him sleep and smiled a little at Oliver as he went to sleep himself.
