Chapter 15
"Hey, I'm up for a swim. Anyone else?" I throw out there hoping to defuse this time bomb that is ticking.
"Who's this?" Dillion nods towards Doug.
Doug, clueless about the tension between Dillion and his girlfriend, reaches over and sticks out his hand. "Doug Walters."
For a half-second, I thought Dillion would refuse to shake it. He gets that, "I don't give a crap smile on his face" but reaches out and gives the guy a firm handshake.
"Good grip," Doug commented, rubbing his hand discreetly, trying to act as that didn't hurt. Olivia is glaring daggers at Dillion. "You ever play ball?" Doug asked.
"Not my sport," Dillion answers. His eyes never leave Olivia's face. "So how long have you two been together?"
"You sure you wouldn't like to get back out there?" I offer again. "I know I sure would feel safer with a swim buddy since it's my first time in the ocean." Nothing. Completely ignored. I can see he refuses to budge and I sigh.
Cat smiles at me. "I'll go with you."
Crap, that's the last thing I want to happen right now. Leave these three alone on the beach ... together. Oh, hell no.
"You know, maybe I should wait?" I try to stall though I have no real good reason and Cat gives me a confused look.
"No, dude. I'd like to go, too," Doug offers, taking off his shirt, and he's in great shape. Okay, he's totally ripped. This is so not good.
"O and I have been going together for just a few months actually," Doug tells Dillion as he kicks off his shoes. "I actually have your sister to thank for getting us together."
Doug smiles warmly at Cat, who beams back at him. Dillion's chest is rising and falling at a rapid rate. Both Cat and Doug are completely unaware of the anger that is simmering just beneath the surface. Dillion is desperately trying to rein it in.
"O?" Dillion questions, one eyebrow raised, again his question aimed at Olivia.
Olivia shrugs. "Just a nickname. I think I like it," Olivia challenged, wrapping her arms around Doug's now half-naked form and snuggling in. Doug smiles at her before kissing the top of Olivia's head.
"Whatever you say, Kitten," Dillion smirks like he's totally not buying it.
"Kitten?" Doug asks, his eyes squint like he's trying to discern if Dillion is being a smart-ass or hitting on his girlfriend.
Olivia looks up at Doug and laughs. "Don't sweat it, sweetie. Dillion is famous for his nicknames. When we were younger, he used to call his sister Tiger and me, Kitten."
"He calls me Bright Eyes," I add in not exactly sure why.
"It was cute when I was younger," Olivia pulls away from Doug before saying, "but as you can see, Dillion, I'm all grown up now."
"Oh, I can see that right fine, Kitten." There was no mistaking Dillion's look for anything but appreciation for what he is seeing. Some might even venture to say he had a look of desire.
Dahhhh! This is bad, REALLY bad.
Doug looks threatened, Cat looks ticked off, and Olivia... Olivia appears to be a cross between annoyed and amused by the slight curve to her lips and the challenge in her eyes.
To make things even more interesting, I hear off in the distance someone yelling. "Dillion! Babe! There you are!" And this long-legged, olive-skinned beauty comes running up to him. She throws her arms around his neck and nearly knocks him off balance. His arms instinctively wrap around her to keep them both from falling into the sand.
"Ew!" she said a second later. "You're all wet!" she complains, pulling away to examine her now damp clothes. "You could have warned me," she adds before swatting his shoulder.
Dillion smiles at her. "You didn't exactly give me a warning there, Brit." He picked up his towel from his chair to hand to her.
She pushes it aside, "It's too late now, but at least I know why you didn't answer your phone. I asked you to wait until I called so you could tell me where to meet up, remember?"
Dillion looked genuinely apologetic. "I'm sorry. I expected to take a quick dip and then be right back out. I must have lost track of time, but hey, you found us."
Brittany shook her head at him like she's totally used to this kind of thing from him and finds it cute. "Well, it helps that it's only March, and this place deserted. Made finding you rather simple, actually."
Dillion pulls her in closer, and she quickly grabs the towel from him to use as a barrier between her clothes and his wet swim trunks before he kisses her on the nose. "It was thoughtless of me, but I'm glad you're here."
Brittany just melted in his arms. It was obvious this girl adored him.
"Hi!" Cat spoke up and grabbed Brittany's hand. "I'm Cat, Dillion's sister. This is Olivia, my best friend and her boyfriend Doug and that over there is Alex he's my..."
Cat hesitates a moment, and I felt compelled to jump in. "Her fiancé."
"You two are getting hitched?" Doug asked with obvious surprise.
Cat's eyes flashed to Olivia, who sent some sort of silent transmission back.
"That's right, Doug, but let's keep that to ourselves shall we."
Doug frowned at Olivia. "Why? Ooh, yeah. I gotcha."
I didn't. Not it at all. Why did Cat hesitate? Why did Olivia say she'd like Doug to keep things under wraps? What the hell was going on?
"Who's ready for a swim?" Doug asks, but none of us answer him as all of us have unanswered questions we want to be answered first.
"And you are?" Olivia inquires, turning to Brittany.
"Oh, I'm sorry. The name is Brittany Ricci, I'm Dillion's +1 for the evening."
Brittany's answer made it rather clear that they weren't in a serious relationship and it was hard not to see Olivia note this too as she glanced past Brittany at Dillion, who was grinning at her.
Olivia smirks back at him before saying, "Oh good, because I was going to say it's obvious you are way too good for him," Olivia says with a teasing lilt to her voice.
Brittany laughs as she looks back at Dillion. "Don't I know it," Brittany's eyes nearly sparkle as teases in a very audible whisper behind her hand, "But don't worry, I'm just using him for the sex."
Olivia, I can tell, was not expecting to get that for a response, and she looks upset for a brief second, so brief it would be indiscernible by anyone unless you were as tuned in as Dillion and me.
It would appear that although Olivia, who is perfectly fine with flaunting the fact that Doug and she are a couple, most definitely does not like the thought of Brittany and Dillion being together.
Dillion looked encouraged by this revelation, but I wasn't so sure that was a good thing.
"I'll walk you to the bathrooms so you can get dressed in your suit," Cat offered to Brittany, who smiled and thanked her.
Once Cat and Brittany walked away, Olivia took her time stripping on the spot to reveal her two-piece suit, if you could call what she was wearing a suit. It seemed to be missing most of its pieces. She took Doug's hand, and they ran off towards the surf together. It made me grateful that Cat was pregnant because it meant her choosing something far less revealing for herself.
Dillion looked about to follow them until I grabbed hold of his arm. "Where do you think you're going?"
He looked down at my hand, and I promptly removed it. "For a swim, why?"
"Why? Why? He asks me why?" I said incredulously.
Dillion waits with eyebrows raised for me to respond.
"Maybe because Olivia is the girl that you went to prison for," I blurt out and Dillion's eyes grow wide.
"Yeah, it was hard to miss now that I know the story," I tell him.
Dillion swears and runs his fingers through his hair. "I was that obvious?"
"Obvious is a strong word, but I'm pretty sure even Cat and Doug felt the weird tension between the two of you. Dillion, you gotta get a grip, man."
Dillion lets out an exasperated sigh. "Yeah, yeah, you're right." He looks back to the water to see Doug lifting Olivia in the waves before sliding her down his form and giving her a kiss.
I see Dillion's hands clenched into a fist. "Dillion? Dillion?!" I yell at him.
"WHAT?!" he growls back at me.
"Not the kind of grip I was talking about," I warn him. I look pointedly at his hands, and he slowly releases them.
"Do you have any idea how hard this is for me?" Dillion grumbles.
I thought immediately of the time I came to pick up Cat at Liam's apartment and seen him kissing her. I so wanted to tear him apart. It took every ounce of my will not to.
"Yeah, I got a clue, but there are several reasons you need to rein in, whatever this is. Cat for one doesn't know about you and Olivia, remember? Two, Brittany is here. Three, if you ruin this day for Cat, I'll kill you."
Dillion's shoulders slumped in defeat. "All good points, Bright Eyes, but I don't know how I'm supposed to survive an entire evening of that guy pawing at Olivia or them kissing and being all lovey-dovey. AGH!" Dillion kicked the sand in frustration. "This whole situation is freaking impossible."
"Just try to keep your distance. When they come in from the water you take Brittany out. If things get to be too much around the fire, offer to take Brittany for a walk on the beach. Whatever it takes, but you can't lose it here and now. Okay?"
Dillion looked a little lost but agreed, "Okay."
"Thank you!" I say, to Dillion, relieved he agreed.
Cat and Brittany come back giggling and talking like old friends. I can tell Cat likes her, but I know for a fact, this girl is not sticking around. I have a definite feeling that the first chance Dillion gets he's going to make his intentions known to Olivia because it's obvious it's far from over between them.
