CHAPTER 08

Weird people.

The feeling of deja vu was real. I let out a loud shriek and than it all happened again. Blood oozing from my hand and me trying my best to not let it get on the floor. Everybody entered the kitchen to see what was the fuss and I could feel the disapproving look from Rob. His eyebrows were up in that uncomfortable look that said "again?".

Lacy was holding a towel to my hand, trying to stop the flow. This time it was a deep cut, I could feel it. A few pained tears escaped my eyes and than it was all commotion. My brother came running to my side, drowning the whimpers I couldn't hold in and drying my tears with his shirt. Brent and Marcus were taking a look at my hand, discussing something about stitches and Ana looked at the two lost boys in the front door.

"Could you guys please get us the first aid kit?" She smiled kindly at them.

The boy who I guessed was Lucas ran upstairs probably going to fetch the damn thing for me while Max just stood at the door. His eyes were huge and fixated on my hand. On the bloodied rag. On the few droplets of the red substance on the floor. His face paled, and I managed to see his trembling hands through my tears.

And than he did something that surprised us all. Maximilian Tucker hunched over and threw up. Right there and then, in the front door carpet. I just loved how that kid was a little surprise box. He was holding his weak body on the door and spitting on the floor.

"Shit." He murmured.

"Fuck." Marcus sighed. "I forgot about his thing. Max, go outside, yeah?"

Lucas came back with the kit and wasn't surprised when he saw the nasty thing on the carpet. "Dude, you're so stupid." He said to his brother.

"Shut up, asshole."

"Boys! We have ladies here." Lacy reprehended them. "This is Maya Reed. Maya, that dork over there is Lucas and you already know Maxie."

I smirked. "Nice to meet you Lucas. Hello Maxie."

"Hey Maya." He said looking down, covering his sight from the blood. "Are you okay?"

"Oh, yeah. I am fi-" I was absolutely not fine. I couldn't even finish the sentence because Rob decided to throw antiseptic alcohol in my hand. And when I say throw, I mean turn the bottle on my cut.

My head turned so fast that I felt it crack. Bitting my brother's shoulder, I managed to not scream bloody murder in that moment, but I could still hear the fait gaging in the background. For a moment there I pitied poor Max, but then another wave of pain shot through my body and I didn't care about the boy anymore.

"Okay, so it's clean." Rob said looking at me with sad eyes. I knew he hated seeing me in pain, especially if he was the one to cause it. "I don't think you need stitches, but we are gauzing that thing up."

I nodded and looked at Max. He was sitting on the couch, his back facing me and head down on his hands, while Lacy cleaned the mess he made.

"Lacy, Marcus, I am so sorry." I said sighing. "I didn't mean to ruin the dinner you guys put so much effort into."

"Ruin? Who said this dinner is ruined?" Lacy said laughing with a glint in her eyes, moping puke of the carpet. "This just spice things up, darling."

"W-what?"

"It's normal for things to go weirdly in this house. We are used to, and all these adrenaline junkies," she said jokingly, pointing at her family sitting on the couch. "learned to laugh about it."

I smiled widely and shook my head, not believing what I had just heard. This woman was amazing. Actually, this whole family was amazing. They all had a special connection - you could feel it in the air. It was there all the time; you could see it when they worked together, the way they knew each other on the palm of their hands, the knowing smiles. Everything was just perfect.

Walking to the boys, where Lucas was whispering something in his brother's ear, I sat down by my friend's side. "Hey." I said. "You okay?"

Max didn't raise his head, but nodded nonetheless.

"Come on, head up Maxie." I said pulling lightly on his hair. "Keep your head down and you'll get sick again."

"No." he mumbled. "M'tired."

I laughed softly at his statement and rested my hand on his shoulder. "Come on Max."

Slowly, he lifted his head up. His blue eyes were a little puffy from the tears and his mouth was pale, along with his face. "Do I look that bad?" He chuckled, with a husky voice.

"What?"

"You scrunched up your nose." He said touching the base of my nose. "A reaction to my face. Do I look that bad?"

"No, not bad. Just pale." I smiled. "Nothing some food can't fix."

"Yeah." He said swiftly looking at my bandaged hand.

"Don't look." I said hiding it. Truth was, I was ashamed because of what happened earlier. I shall never go near a kitchen again.

"No, it's okay. There's no blood." He said taking my hand and softly tracing the pad o his thumb over the bruise. I flinched a little, but then relaxed. It was just Max.

We talked a little bit more and soon enough we were laughing at stories he'd tell me. According to Max, Aria and Ryan had a long lost love story somewhere and that's the reason why his girlfriend broke up with him. Aria Karp had always been that eccentric girl, though. She had a short temper, but as Max told me more about her, I knew I had chosen the right person to be my friend. She was loyal. And she could be nice too, I was the living proof of it.

"Guys, dinner's ready." Ana called us and we followed her to the dining room.

It was a beautiful sight. Just like my fridge earlier that day, the table was full. Mashed potatoes, salad, steak, pasta. My mouth started watering and I didn't care about my cropped top anymore. I wanted that food, belly or no belly. So I dived in.

I was devouring my salad when it happened. A pea hit my cheek. I looked around to see the boys discussing business. Ana and Lacy were really entertained with their baking stories; it could've been anyone.

Few seconds later, another one came flying in my direction. It hit my forehead. But I succeeded in catching my aggressor. Lacy was trying to contain her laughter as she threw another pea. It hit me than. Her target wasn't me. It was Marcus, who was sitting right to my left.

Looking at her, I swiftly pointed a finger at him. She nodded and I loaded my spoon with a couple of peas. If I got the angle right, it would be a two-in-one bonus. My elbow hit the end of the flatware, and I knew I did a good job. Rob tried to play it off by awkwardly laughing and Marcus still had a pea on his hair.

We took a couple more shoots until they realized what was going on. Fifteen minutes later, give or take, Lacy was ordering all the boys around, making them clean up the mess they made. When it hit them who was attacking them with peas, they decided to retaliate. With smashed potatoes. Safe to say, dumbest idea ever.

Hours had passed and we all had a great night, but it was still a school night and the team and I needed to get home. We all bid our goodbyes and walked to the cars. But this time I wanted to go with Rob. I had enough awkward situations for a night and my superpower was drained.

"Hey, where are you going?" Brent asked grabbing my hand. "Our car is that way."

"Oh I was just-" He didn't even let me finish. That motherfucker didn't even let me finish, squeezing my injured hand and pulling me from the door.

"What?" He asked when he noticed me staring at him with wide eyes and open mouth. Suddenly he blushed and squeezed my hand a little bit more, growing nervous. "Oh, I am just holding your had to guide you, it's nothin-"

"You're hurting her, dude." Said a husky voice from behind me. "You're squashing her injured hand."

I looked at Lucas and thanked him with my eyes, breathing slowly, controlling the pain.

"It was lovely knowing you Maya. I am sure you'll be around a lot." He said smirking and winking me goodbye. No one ever winked me goodbye. It was funny.

"Lovely meeting you too, Lucas." I said laughing with him. "See you some other day, yeah?"

He nodded and looked behind me, to an apathetic Brent. He looked bored, actually, fixating his eyes on his shoes.

Once inside the car, he opened his mouth and closed again. I was thankful for that. But then suddenly his powers kicked in.

"Are you and that Max guy dating?" He asked on a hurry. "If you are that's okay, I won't tell Rob, I just wanted to kn-"

"Shut up Brent."
