With a Smile and a Song

As the prince laid on the princess, animals slowly began to crawl over to him. One brave little rabbit even hopped over to him to smell him.

"Snow," Y/n said, poking his head, but otherwise not moving. She was afraid to scare him off. Snow ignored her, not hearing. "Snow!"

He looked up, jumping up in surprise. "Oh!"

Quick as they could, the animals ran away.

"Please don't run away! I won't hurt you." He watched as they all looked at him, frightened and a bit confused.

"I'm awfully sorry. We didn't mean to frighten you. But you don't know what we've been through. And all because we were afraid..." He smiled apologetically to them. "I'm so ashamed of the fuss I've made when my princess has stayed so calm. What do you do when things go wrong?"

A bird tweeted.

"Oh! You sing a song!"

He tweeted back happily and flew over to the two, landing on Snow's finger. Snow sang a tune for the bird to sing back, then Y/n did the same. On the last one, Snow gave such a high note, the chirping broke, making them both laugh.

Snow:
With a smile and a song,
Life is just like a bright sunny day
Your cares fade away
And your heart is young

The animals began to rush over to the two, drawn by the singing.

Y/n:
With a smile and a song,
All the world seems to waken anew,
Rejoicing with you
As the song is sung

A chipmunk ran up to them. As the prince reached out, he ran away, but then came back with a multitude of other animals.

Snow:
There's no use in grumbling
When raindrops
Come tumbling
Remember you're the one who can fill the world with sunshine

Y/n:
When you smile and you sing,
Everything is in tune and it's spring
And life flows along
With a smile and a song

"I really do feel quite happy now," Snow said, smiling. Then, to Y/n, "I'm sure we'll get along somehow, dear. Everything's going to be alright. After all, can't we just stay at your palace?"

She shook her head. "Your stepmother will think to look there, I'm sure. What a crazy woman..."

His face fell. "You're right," he sighed before regaining his cheery demeanor. "Then we'll just have to find something else."

The princess then turned to the animals. "Maybe you know where we can stay?" she asked. A bird nodded back. "You do? Won't you take us there? Please?"

They took them deeper into the woods, where a small house, more like a cottage, resided. It was out in the open, rather than hidden in the rest of the forest.

"Oh, it's adorable!" Snow gushed. "Just like a doll's house."

They went up to the window, clearing the dust away.

"Ooh, it's dark inside."

"That probably means there's nobody here," Y/n pointed out.

"Well, maybe. But just in case..." He went up to the door, smoothed back his shirt, and knocked. When nobody answered, he knocked again to the same deadly silence.

"Guess you were right," he admitted.

Suddenly, the door began to creak. He opened the door and stepped inside.

"Hello? May we come in?"

As the door shut behind them, Y/n said, "I thought we established that nobody was here."

"Oh, hush." Despite this, he chuckled.

They walked further inside, not sure what to expect, when he let out a sudden shriek. The animals, who had been following the two, ran away.

Y/n put her hands up in defense. "What is it?! Who needs to die?!"

But when she looked at her prince, he was sitting happily in a small chair.

"What a cute little chair!"

"Snow!" she scolded, putting her hands down.

"What?" he asked all innocently, looking around. "Why, there's seven little chairs. Must be seven little children." He suddenly frowned. "And from the look of this table, seven untidy little children."

He walked over to the table, covered in old junk and grime. He picked things up from the table. "A pickaxe. A stocking, as well!" He opened one of the pots and reached inside. "A shoe, too!"

He put the shoe down, then looked towards the fireplace. "And just look at that fireplace! It's covered with dust." He blew some of it off, making the chipmunks sneeze, the last one falling into a beer mug, making them both laugh.

"Anything else, Your Highness?" she asked sarcastically.

He pointed at the ceiling. "Look. Cobwebs everywhere."

She looked up. "Okay, good point."

When he turned, he saw the sink, piled high.

"My my my! What a pile of dirty dishes! And just look at that broom!"

It was in the corner, looking old and very unused.

"Why, they've never swept this room. You'd think their mother would..." He stopped, realizing a sad thought. "Perhaps they have no mother. Then they're orphans. That's too bad."

All he could remember was his own mother, whom he had never really known. He could, however, remember her raven hair and her bright smile, paired with a tittering laugh.

"I know! We'll clean the house and surprise them! Then maybe they'll let us stay.

He took off his cape, which Y/n took immediately and hung it up, then did the same with her veil and crown as he gave directions.

"Now, you wash the dishes. You tidy the room." He then turned to Y/n, smiling as he handed her a duster. "You clean the fireplace." He took the broom. "And I'll use the broom."

The birds began to whistle a tune.

Snow:
Just whistle while you work

They whistled back.

Snow:
And cheerfully
Together we
Can tidy up the place

Y/n:
So hum a merry tune

She and Snow both hummed together.

Y/n:
It won't take long
When there's a song
To help you set the pace

Snow:
And as you sweep the room,
Imagine that the broom
Is someone that you love

He took Y/n by the hand and spun her around a few times.

Snow:
And soon you'll find you're dancing to the tune

The animals who were doing the dishes were licking them clean.

"Charming," Y/n said, deadpan.

Snow looked where are was and quickly out a stop to them. "Oh, no, no, no, no. Put them in the tub."

They shrugged and the squirrels pushed them into the sink while the deer pumped water.

Y/n:
When hearts are high,
The time will fly,
So whistle while you work

"Uh uh uh. Not under the rug," Snow said when he saw that two of the squirrels were trying to hide the dirt. Looking around, they spotted a hole in the wall, where they swept it in. Suddenly, a mouse came out and squeaked angrily at them before going back inside.

After they finished the inside, they went to sweep off the front porch.

Both:
So whistle while you work

After finishing cleaning, they began to walk around to explore a little.

"Let's see what's upstairs," Snow suggested, holding a candle out towards the staircase.

When they went up, several beds were smushed together with a giant window on the other side of the room.

"Oh, what adorable little beds!" he said as he looked around.

"Look," Y/n said, pointing. "They have names. Let's see. Doc. Happy. Sneezy. Dopey."

"What funny names for children," he said, giggling, then continuing from where she left off. "Grumpy, Bashful, and Sleepy." Suddenly, he yawned, placing the candle down. "I'm a little sleepy myself."

He lied down on the bed, the other animals surrounding him. Y/n giggled as she blew out the candle and pulled the blanket up on him, then lied down next to him, snuggling up next to him. He stroked her hair for a bit until they feel asleep.
