Chapter 3
Theo knocked on Bobbi's door the next morning as she was finishing getting ready.
"Bobbi?" He called out.
"Hmm?" she answered, her mouth preoccupied with holding the rubber band needed for completely her long side braid.
"Breakfast is ready."
"Coming."
She finished her hair, turned off the bathroom light and headed back into her large bedroom. She sat on the edge of her queen sized bed, floating a bit on top of the big fluffy comforter as she leaned down to slip on a pair of shoes.
She grabbed her phone and her sunglasses for one of the night stands and a long woolen cardigan sweater from her closet before heading out to the living room. When she opened her front door, Theo stood leaning against the wall, looking out at the hills behind the house.
He stood up and smiled down at her as she stepped out onto the small porch and leaned down to kiss her in greeting.
Bobbi hummed as he pulled back, smiling brightly up at him.
"Good morning," she said.
"Morning, bird." He took her hand and led her down the stairs and towards the main house. "You sleep alright?"
He glanced down at her as she walked beside him. She nodded emphatically.
"Yes! Like a freaking baby. My bed was so comfortable. It nearly made up for all the times Alex has had to rip me out of bed the last few months. What about you?" She peered up at him through her sunglasses, the sun shining bright above them. She could see her own reflection in his sunglasses as he looked down at her.
"Good. I needed a good nights sleep. I mean it was little lonely." He started chuckling when Bobbi hit him playfully on the arm.
They stepped up onto the back patio and Alfie looked up at them as they approached, Theo's cackle catching his attention. He set the big bowl of fruit salad, he was holding in his hand, down in the center of the large spread set out on the table.
"Got the tattoos on full display I see?" he said, nodding at Theo's shoulder.
He had opted for a loose tank top and dark jeans while Bobbi had to pull her sweater tighter over her shoulders when the wind swept through the lawn. Theo glanced down at his left shoulder, nodding.
"Yeah. I guess so."
"How are you not cold?" Bobbi said, shivering slightly.
"Its February in LA. That's like May back home," he said. "Are you really that cold?"
"It's chilly," she whined, robbing her arms to try and warm herself up.
Theo wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer to his chest. He started rubbing her arms as well to help keep her from getting chilled.
"What's all the food for?" Bobbi asked, only then noticing that Alfie and Sam had not finished setting out all food for breakfast.
"Rosie's coming over," Alfie answered.
He set down two krafts of coffee and Bobbi immediately leaned over to pour herself a cup, nodding.
"Oh, okay. Makes sense."
Sam entered with a basket of toasted bagels when the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it," he offered.
Bobbi drank her coffee, holding it tightly between her hands, when she heard a loud feminine voice ring out when the door opened.
"Oh thank God this is the right house! I thought for sure some psycho was gonna answer the door. You guys are really hidden out here."
Sam stepped aside and let Rosie enter. She took off her wide brimmed hat as she stepped inside and ruffled her short red hair cut in an attempt to tame her thick locks. Sam gave her a quick high five after taking her jacket and hat and hanging them on the rack near the door. He then led her through the house and out to the patio.
Rosie let out a small whistle as she stepped outside and observed her surroundings.
"This is quiet the place. Private enough for you kids?" she asked, nodding over at Bobbi and Theo, smiling.
Bobbi smiled and set her mug down at her seat, walking around to greet their guest.
Alfie stepped up first and extended his hand toward her.
"Hiya, Rosie. How are you, kid?"
She took his hand then pulled him into a bro hug, giving him a quick pat on the back before pulling away.
"Doing alright. How are you, my dear Alfred?" Rosie smirked up at him as his cheeks went slightly pink.
"Why do we hang out with you again?" he mumbled.
Rosie shrugged as she turned to Bobbi as she approached.
"I don't really know. But I don't think you guys would be able to get rid of me anyways," she said.
She had to stand on her tiptoes a bit to receive Bobbi's hug.
"Sounds about right," Bobbi said, standing up straight again and laughing slightly.
Rosie got a fist bump from Theo as everyone else sat down in their seats.
Sam took the head of the table. As chef, he retained that honor and used it every time.
Theo and Bobbi sat with their backs to the yard and Alfie and Rose took the seats opposite.
The conversation lulled a bit as everyone dug into the feast Sam had prepared. The only words spoken for the first 15 minutes or so were high praises of the food and proclamations of gratitude. Sam answered each with a slight nod and a smile.
By the time most of the food was stowed away in everyone's stomachs, all leaned back in their chairs and relaxed a bit.
Bobbi had her leg tucked under her and her hands wrapped around her mug of coffee to keep them warm. Theo's hand found its natural spot on her knee as he leaned back in his seat.
"You guys are looking good," Rosie said, breaking the silence and starting up the conversation. She glanced around at all of them, nodding. Her curls bounced with the moment of her head.
"Uh, thanks," Bobbi said.
"Nice and tan," Rosie said.
Theo glanced at Bobbi who glanced back.
"Uh, yeah, I guess," Alfie answered.
"How do you guys do it?" Rosie burst out.
Everyone chuckled at her seemingly genuine upset state of mind.
"I mean seriously. I lay out for like 10 minutes and get burnt like you wouldn't believe. But you four travel the world for months at a time and come back looking tanned and toned and what not."
Alfie shrugged.
"Good genes?" he offered.
"But you're all Irish! Just like me! Its not fair."
"Alfie and I are black Irish. There's a difference," Bobbi said.
"And I'm half Grecian, so that kinda helps," Theo said.
Rosie turned to Sam.
"And what are you, my dear Samuel? Half Norse god?"
Everyone laughed and Sam shook his head.
"I mean seriously. How are you all so good looking?"
"It's because we're all from Boston," Theo offered.
Rosie sat up in her seat and leaned forward against the table, her finger pointing over at Theo.
"You really wanna start that again, Harris?"
Theo laughed and shook his head.
"New York is way better than Boston! Always has been, always will be! Go Brooklyn!" Her faint Brooklyn accent got stronger as her excitement rose.
"Okay! Okay!" Theo said, holding his hands up defensively, laughing as he spoke.
The gesture seemed to calm Rosie's hot temper a bit.
"Agree to disagree." He muttered.
He smirked as she glared over at him.
Bobbi laughed as she turned to Rosie to speak.
"Did you have fun Saturday night? I barely got to see you."
She took a sip of her coffee as Rosie started to speak.
"Yeah. It was really fun. And it isn't my fault you're so busy at those things. That hunk of yours seemed determined to talk to everyone with you by his side. Who's this new one you've got and where can I find one?"
Bobbi rolled her eyes.
"His name's Aaron. He's some sort of model or social media influencer. I don't know really. Alex found him for me."
"And you thought the Grammy's would be a good first outing?" Rosie asked.
Bobbi shrugged, nodded her head.
"Eh, better than a real date. Hopefully the next two outings will be just as distracting and I won't have to actually spend that much time with him."
"Did he smell bad?" Rosie asked, her face serious. "I feel like most of the pretty ones look like they should smell great but then they just reek. Except for you Sam. You always smell great."
Rosie sent him a small wink which he returned with a nod.
"He was just boring. And self-absorbed. I've never seen anyone so excited to be seen with me and I think he just liked it for the attention. And he didn't smell like Teddy, so his scent was not to my liking."
"Aw, babe." Theo said.
Bobbi turned towards him and gave him a big, cheesy smile.
"Yuck," Rosie muttered across the table.
"At least you don't have to live with them," Alfie muttered, shaking his head at the sight of the two of them being adorable.
"You're one to talk, Rosie," Theo said.
"What ever do you mean, Theodore?" she asked.
"You've been living vicariously through our relationship for years," Theo said.
"That's a strong accusation, Theodore. Are you sure you know what your talking about?"
Bobbi laughed slightly.
"Rosie, you literally just won single of the year for a song you wrote about us!"
Rosie sat back and crossed her arms over her chest, her nose in the air a bit.
"You can't prove anything," she said, trying hard to act offended.
"It's called 'When Green Meets Blue'," Theo said, staring down at her.
"And you literally have a line where you talk about how a teddy bear fell in love with a little bird," Bobbi added.
"That doesn't prove anything," Rosie countered.
Alfie leaned over to her and spoke in a mock whisper.
"You do realize his eyes are green and hers are blue, right?"
"So?"
"And his nickname is Teddy and he calls her Birdy?" he added.
Rosie froze, trying hard to keep a straight face. Alfie's chuckle at her expression when he sat back sent her over the edge.
"Oh, come on, you guys. You're too cute! What else am I suppose to do? Not write about it? It's not like I've got a love life of my own to use as inspiration. Just let me steal yours."
"At least you admit it," Theo said, laughing.
"I mean, how long have you guys known each other?" she asked.
Bobbi turned to Theo, pursing her lips to try and remember.
"I think since we were kids," she said.
"See! That's adorable!" Rosie exclaimed.
Theo nodded.
"Yeah. I met Alfie first at school."
"Uh huh," Bobbi said, nodding. "And he would bring you over to hang out. I remember thinking you were so cute even then. I had the biggest crush on you all the way through middle school the first part of high school."
Theo crinkled up his eyes, blushing over at her.
"Aw, Birdy! You had a crush on me? That's adorable."
Bobbi scoffed and gave him a blank look in return.
"Uh, Teddy, you do realize our three year anniversary is coming up, right?"
"Yeah, I know."
"So you really haven't caught on that I like you yet?" she said, laughing lightly.
"Still. Its adorable." He leaned over and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Bobbi laughed and heard Alfie fake a gag reflex.
When she looked up she saw Rosie staring over at them, her head resting in her hands as she leaned over at the table.
"This is too cute. I have to write about this."
Bobbi shook her head.
"Speaking of your anniversary," Rosie said, coming out of her cuteness overload coma. "Are you guys gonna get more tattoos?" She gestured at Theo's shoulder.
The top of his left arm was decorated by the image of a forest that then became a flock of birds flying away. Underneath that he had three tribal bands, two thick ones surrounding a small band made up of dots and dashes.
Bobbi pulled up the sleeve of her sweater to look at her arm. On the outside of her left forearm, she had a flock of birds resembling Theo's flying toward her hand and a single band circling her arm just below her elbow. This was made up of dots and dashes as well, spelling out Teddy in Morse code just as his spelled out Birdy. But her band was made out of small stars and squiggle lines, to keep it from being too obvious.
They both nodded their head in agreement.
"Yeah. For sure," Theo answered.
"You know anyone out here?" Bobbi asked.
Rosie had several tattoos on her wrists and a few up her right arm. She had made a point to get a tattoo in every city she visited while on tour and was racking them up in number.
"Yeah. My guy Pablo's great. And discreet. What are you guys gonna get this time and how are you gonna explain it to the press?" she asked, laughing.
"We're trying to get Sam and Alfie to get some with us, so we can claim it was a group thing," Theo said.
"You finally gonna get one, Alfie?" Rosie asked, turning towards him.
He shrugged.
"Maybe."
"What about you, Samuel?" She asked, looking past Alfie.
He shook his head.
"No way in hell. My hair is enough of a rebellious act."
They all laughed.
"What are you gonna get this time?" she asked, turning back to Theo and Bobbi.
"Not quite sure." Theo said, glancing up at Bobbi.
"Something in threes, in honor our third year anniversary."
Theo nodded.
"Yeah. And then we can claim that it stands for the other three members of the band."
"And you'll just get a new matching tattoo every year your together?" Rosie asked, glancing between them.
"Yup," they both said at the same time.
She shook her head, glancing down as she leaned back in her chair.
"Gosh, how are you two not married yet?"
They laughed at the exasperated tone in her voice.
"Trust me, Rosie. I'm trying," Theo said.
"But you guys are like forever now. Why do you keep it hidden?"
At her question, the whole table groaned.
Samuel stood up and started to clear. Alfie joined in his efforts, shaking his head
"Every single time, Rosie. I swear. And I thought you came over to help us write the new album."
"I did. Really. I'm just curious. You guys never give it to me straight. Every time I ask. It took me forever to get you guys to finally admit to me that you were in fact together when we first started hanging out. Even though it was the most obvious thing in the world. I mean everyone knows by now, don't they?" Rosie looked from Alfie back over to Theo and Bobbi.
They glanced at each other, trying to sort of their story so it made the most sense.
The truth was that the label didn't want them together. They hadn't from the beginning. The band was doing great and Theo's image as a bad boy helped sell records. So did Bobbi's reputation as a man eater. It was the perfect marketing ploy for an alternative rock band.
"Some people have figured it out," Theo said.
"A lot of our fans have," Bobbi said.
"The matching tattoos aren't a dead giveaway?" Rosie asked.
"It mainly for our own privacy," Theo offered up as an answer. Bobbi shook her head in agreement.
"Yeah. We're already so much in the news that we don't really want people speculating about our relationship. They try to peer into our lives enough."
"But the fake boyfriends, Bobbi? And Theo you're never ending string of girls?" Rosie asked.
Bobbi smiled as she tried to spot a notebook or a phone laying around. She could tell Rosie was fishing for details to help with her next love song.
"It's to appease the label, really," Theo said.
"Yeah, helps keep up the charade and promote the brand. But we always find our dates ourselves. That's up to us, not them," Bobbi said.
Rosie shook her head, sighing.
"It's a damn shame," she muttered.
"What is?" Theo asked.
"You guys are too cute! And so in love you should proclaim it from the mountain tops!" Rosie said.
"We're good where we are now, thanks," Theo said.
"Besides, we have you to write love songs about us, don't we?" Bobbi said, chuckling.
Rosie smiled.
"That you do, my friend."
