A Wedding Special
THIS IS NOT THEO AND BOBBI'S WEDDING SPECIAL! PLEASE DON'T HATE ME!
*Disclaimer* So I wrote this like a year ago and I thought I would share it will you guys just because. It is not Bobbi and Theo's wedding but it is Sam's.
To catch you up, in the last chapter I posted for this book (and trust me, I'm aware how long it's been since I've updated), I briefly mentioned that Sam got engaged. His wedding becomes a big plot point as the story goes on and occurs towards the end of the story, right before the big finale.
I wrote his wedding special way before I even knew how the rest of the story was going to play out. I just wanted to. I thought it would be fun. And it was. And I love what I wrote. Even re-reading it today for the first time in forever I still loved it. So, without further ado, I present to you "Sam's Wedding". Enjoy!
***********
The roar of the engine slowed down to a gentle purr as Theo decelerated and pulled off the highway. New England was pulling out all the stops and the sight that met them as they drove through the open iron gates was the finale.
The gravel avenue that stretched out before them was lined with trees. They stood no more than a few feet apart and each offered a variety of changing colors, their vibrancy even louder against the background of a high gray sky, threatening no rain, only there to act a canvas for the color show.
Bobbi barely found the capability to tear her eyes from the passing color as Theo sped on up the hill, the leaves flying by. She only turned when another sight altogether presented itself past Theo's profile.
The Atlantic Ocean roared just below them and beyond the steep cliff as they rose higher and higher along the road. The sound of crashing waves, breaking against the sharp rocks acting as the northern coastline for Massachusetts, left no room for any other conversation in the car.
Theo's eyes stayed dead ahead and only the slight hint of a smile at the corner of his lips and the squeeze of Bobbi's hand in his hand gave any sign that he noticed her now watching him, certain he was the prettiest out of all the sights offered to them.
At the top of the hill, the winding lane came to a dead end at the foot of a large manor set on the edge of the cliff and acting as watchmen for the rest of the mansions spotted throughout the coastline. Even the small islands spotted among the waves offered no rival to its height and majesty.
Rising high on an already high hill, the white manor occupied the majority of the plateau, leaving only space for sprawling lawns of neatly cut grass and scattered gardens. Its many windows acted as portals to the inside, the various balconies and patio doors open to let in the unseasonably warm October breeze.
The large stained glass windows that greeted each visitor acted as the eyes, their tall peaks looking out onto the horizon. They glanced down at Bobbi and Theo as their car rolled to a slow stop in front of the mansion, even the car feeling the sense of majesty the house demanded.
A loud horn coming from behind started the wheels forward again and Theo followed the directions presented to him by an awaiting parking attendant. The bustling crowd filling the grounds and enlivening the area with energy all wore the same as the parking attendant. Each set of black slacks, white button-downs, and maroon vests were neatly pressed and dressed right.
The mass of moving workers increased when Theo finally brought the car to a stop and set it in park outside a wall of doors, all open and emitting steam. Inside, a glimpse of the inner workings for such an occasion could be seen as people moved to and fro among the giant kitchen that sat just beyond the row of doors.
Bobbi exchanged a quick wide-eyed glance at Theo before following his lead and stepping out of the car. Their companion car took it's spot just next to theirs as Theo grabbed the garment bags hanging in the back. Rosie's low whistle voiced the sense of complete awe and wonderment Theo and Bobbi had held themselves. Her head leaned back in an attempt to catch a glimpse of where the house ended as it reached for the sky.
"Did this place somehow get bigger since we left last night?"
"Definitely feels like it." Bobbi closed the gap between them and Theo followed.
Alfie let out his own whistle as he finally caught a proper glance of the place, his and Rosie's own garment bags flung over his shoulder.
"This place is huge! I figured the Griffin's were loaded. But this is something else!"
"It's not technically ours. Just an old family estate now a historical landmark owned by the state. But welcome to Griffin Manor, nonetheless."
All four sets of eyes turned in the same direction as a voice stepped from the bustle of the kitchen to greet them. It was a woman standing tall, matching Honor's general appearance. She had replaced Honor's long brown hair for her own short curly black speckled with the smallest hint of gray.
"Glad to see my second half of a bridal party possesses the ability to show up on time."
Bobbi's wince was mirrored in Theo and Alfie's own expression but Rosie's nose seemed to rise half an inch into the air.
"Yeah. Sorry about that."
Bobbi bit her lip as Rosie smoothed out her vowels and added a hint of posh to her speech.
"Our private jet had some technical difficulties. Couldn't be avoided. I'm sure you understand."
The woman's smile stayed in place and she seemed almost on the brink of laughter, following right behind Bobbi and Theo.
"Actually I don't. Sam told me you guys missed your flight. Regardless, glad you could make it. I'm Maureen, Honor's sister, bridesmaid, and wedding coordinator. We were never properly introduced at the rehearsal yesterday as you were unable to show up due to your 'technical difficulties'."
Rosie slammed her mouth shut after a futile attempt to respond. Maureen's smile stayed the same and her courteous manner remained steadfast. Bobbi turned to let out her suppressed chuckle, Rosie's look of indignation proving too much. She was met with Theo's shoulder and turned her body towards him until she could contain herself.
Rosie was not given the chance to retort as she had barely gathered her wits back around her when Maureen was leading them into the house, a "This way." shot over her shoulder.
Through the massive entryway, the impressive array of windows allowed the cool light from outside to flood the high ceilings, aiding the large crystal chandelier that hung down from above.
All four heads turned each direction, trying to catch a full glimpse of the majesty that surrounded them. Their arrival to the manor the night before, barely in time for the rehearsal dinner, missing the rehearsal all together, took them through the kitchen and straight into the dining room, missing the main parts of the house altogether.
Maureen led them up the wide staircase that spiraled up towards the second story, the plush carpet muting their steps as they climbed. A large suite greeted them at the end of a long hallway and a balcony just beyond offered the main source of light and fresh air as the soft curtains billowed in the wind let in from the open doors.
Sam came into view, looking up from buttoning his shirt as Maureen stepped aside and let the rest of the band enter.
"Samuel! My man! There you are!"
Rosie immediately started towards him, her hand extended. His usually passive face broke out into a wide smile. Maureen broke in before all the introductions could start to flood the air.
"You will be needed down in the entryway to greet guests before the ceremony begins. I'll come to get you when it's time and the resident make-up and hair artist will be stopping in to make sure everyone is ready to go."
Sam nodded in reply.
"Thanks, Maureen. I really appreciate it."
She gave him a quick nod and shut the door as she left. The five of them stood in a small circle, the four members of the bridal party looking to one another as Sam's smile was still visible and his mood brighter than the sky outside.
"Thank you guys for being here."
He shook Theo and Alfie's hands, even pulling them into a half hug. Rosie and Bobbi both got enveloped in a warm embrace. Bobbi felt her body stiffen at the onslaught but then relax as Sam proved an excellent hugger.
"Dude! Of course! We can't miss your wedding day! Who the hell else do you expect to be standing up there next to you other your best friends?"
Rosie seemed into this happy Sam, the first to speak out of the four of them. A laugh easily slipped out of his wide smile and Sam's eyes were crinkled at the sides from his high cheeks.
"You guys are the best groom's men and women anyone could ask for. Thanks so much for coming. I love you guys."
Bobbi felt a tear escape the corner of her eye and saw both Theo and Alfie wipe away the hints of their own at his words. Theo coughed into his elbow to strengthen his voice but it failed him nonetheless as it cracked as he spoke.
"Of course, dude. We love you too."
Rosie burst their small bubble of love and declaration, breaking the gaze the five of them were sending to one another.
"Okay. This got weird. And we need to get ready. Sam, you're getting married today and as Best Women, it is my job to make sure you get to the church on time."
Rosie reached forward and grabbed the garment bags both Alfie and Theo still had swung over their shoulders and dispersed them accordingly, kicking Theo and Alfie into one of the rooms set off the main living room occupying the suite.
She passed Bobbi her suit and started to push her towards an open door and the bathroom beyond before anyone could say another word. Only the sound of Sam's light chuckle followed them as they set out to get ready.
A bucket of ice, a bottle of champagne and five glasses were waiting for them on the coffee table when Bobbi and Rosie finally deemed themselves ready. Rosie was rearing to go as soon as she put on her bolo tie, buttoning the top button of her white button-up and then the front button of her black suit jacket.
Bobbi had to grab hold of her shoulders to keep her still while she wrestled with her hair and then her makeup. It took an extra few minutes before Bobbi could declare Rosie ready to go. Bobbi had her own hair wrapped up in a bun and out of her face as she followed Rosie out of the bathroom. Alfie, Theo, and Sam all stood tall and ready in their own suits. Alfie's curls remained free and high on his head as his hand pushed them up and out of his eyes every few seconds.
Rosie joined their conversation as if she had started it herself, her words coming in loud among the conversation, clearly unaware of the topic but determined nonetheless. Theo broke off when Bobbi entered the room, his smile lighting up his face as soon as his eyes found her.
He leaned down and planted a light kiss on the cheek she offered up to him, careful not to have him ruin her lipstick.
"You look beautiful."
The look in his eyes proved his words sincere and Bobbi's stomach still flipped. Five years and the look never grew stale, neither did her reaction.
He passed her her own set of black leather shoes and his shoulder to hold onto to as she slipped them on.
"Guys! We look great! I mean look at us! All matching!"
Rosie's champagne glass was tight in her hand but the high level of liquid content didn't help explain her increasingly high energy.
Theo grabbed a glass and passed it to Bobbi, who received it with a small thank you. He took a seat on the nearest armrest and Bobbi took a half-seat leaning against his leg, her arm falling instinctively behind his neck.
"We're not getting matching pj's, Rosie," Bobbi said.
"Oh come on, guys! They would be so cool. They could even have squad goals written on the back!" She turned in an attempt to demonstrate. "You know! Because we're squad goals-"
Her energy fizzled out on the subject when she saw she was being met with a mixture of blank stares and patronizing nods. She shook her head and let the subject drop, immediately diving into something else and stirring the conversation between Alfie and Sam. Theo took his eyes off their now small circle and looked up at Bobbi.
"Hey. We never discussed how we were gonna play tonight. You know, me and you. It's kind of a different crowd, with so many of our friends and family. But we don't really know Honor's family."
Bobbi nodded and bit her lip for a second to think. She shrugged when no easy answer came to mind and instead just smiled down at Theo.
"I don't really think it matters. Sam said don't try to fool anyone. Apparently, all of them can see through anything anyways. There are already rumors flying around about you and me. Why not actually enjoy ourselves?"
"Sounds good to me. Could kind of show us what our own wedding could be."
Bobbi smiled and nodded. A loud pounding on the door halted any further discussion on the running conversation as Bobbi stood up from Theo's lap. They joined the rest of the group when a big head of curls popped her head in, her continuous stream of chatter entering the room before she even got the chance. Her bright smile was another one that resembled both Honor's and Maureen's, adding to the tally of Griffin look-a-like's Bobbi had going in her head.
The make-up artist introduced her self as Lisa and hurried with each of the occupants. She found few flaws with Bobbi and gave her the go-ahead within a few minutes of powdering and hairspray. Her real challenge lay in Rosie first but her bubbling personality and continuous stream of chatter kept her victims distracted enough so she could do her job.
Alfie and Rosie were somehow subdued and looked wedding day ready by the time she finished. She came to Theo, added a bit of hairspray to his already neatly combed back hair, then paused for a millisecond at Sam before heading right back for the door. Maureen reappeared only a few minutes later to lead them back downstairs, as the hour was finally approaching.
Bobbi fell in line along with the rest of Sam's groom's men, Sam himself standing at the front nearest the door, while Rosie stood right next to him. Honor's own bridal party stood opposite on the other side of the large wooden door as it stood open to welcome in the arriving guests.
A tall young man, another body fitting the vague resemblance all Griffin relatives seemed to wear, stood immediately inside the door, even before the coat rack that stood as an offering to all guests. Only his eyes moved as he glanced over Bobbi and the rest as they descended the staircase to take their place. Bobbi caught a hint of recognition in his dark eyes as he glanced at each of them but then they moved back towards their duty before Bobbi could be sure.
He held a basket, extended so it stood in the way of each arrival, a neat sign plastered to the side that read out "Cellphones and all other recording devices. Please, and Thank you."
The first few of the guests paused at the sign, digging into their pockets and pursed with a mild look of confusion on their expression. The elderly never lost the look as they smiled up at Sam and his friends and made their way into the awaiting sanctuary.
Anyone under the age of fifty, however, glanced at the sign, reached in to grab their phones and held the same look of mild confusion. Their expressions dissipated as their eyes then went to land on Sam standing tall and the four bodies standing behind him. Their grips on their phones tighten at the sight and they had to glance at Sam and his bridal party one last time before finally letting their possessions go.
Each guest made their way into the sanctuary where the tall windows of stained glass stood as the perimeter to then take their seats among the neat rows of white folding chairs. The stream of bodies entering the hall remained steady and the faces that past Bobbi each time remained new.
Maureen's frequent glances down at the time grew as the minutes ticked on and the stream started to thin. The first lull in the crowd finally presented itself and Bobbi let her back slump.
"That's a lot of people," Theo whispered under his breath as he turned his back away from the opposing line of bridal members.
Bobbi looked their way properly for the first time and found one of them already looking her way. Well, not directly at her but instead directly to her left, where Theo's back now presented itself.
This Griffin member stood as Honor's almost exact twin. Her eyes were bright and her hair shone a dark red in the bright light of the afternoon. Her cheeks were round, glowing a soft red that only heightened the warm glow found in her thick hair and her smile stayed unwavering.
Bobbi diverted her eyes down to her shoes when the bridesmaid nudged her companion. Clearly another Griffin relative, she reigned a few inches taller than her sister once she stood tall and looked up. They were still glancing her way and grew even more animated when Theo turned back, covering his mouth with his hand to hide a yawn. His eyes didn't even blink their way and instead fell down upon Bobbi.
She could see the second bridesmaid shake her head in disagreement, her short brown hair flipping as she did, her eyes dark and intense as they switched between where Bobbi and Theo stood and her sister. Their words remained muted but their hands joined the conversation as they continued to talk.
"You've got an admirer," Bobbi whispered up at Theo.
"Where?" His eyes finally broke from her's to land on the pair of bridesmaids across the hall.
Bobbi nodded in their direction and he found the bright set of eyes smiling in his direction. He nodded and took a step closer to Bobbi, wrapping his arm around her waist in response.
The second bridesmaid smirked and turned towards her sister, hitting her lightly on the arm, clearly the victor in their debate. Her next words did make it across the hall and Bobbi caught them before her attention was grabbed by the next round of guests.
"See? I told you!"
A small crowd made its way up the walkway and caused Sam to leave his post to meet them. Bobbi tore her eyes from the interaction of the bridesmaids but had to double check her vision as she found Sam embracing a tall, dark looking man, with looks rivaling only those of Theo's. His deep voice only furthered the recognition as he greeted Sam.
The beautiful woman standing next to him barely registered in Bobbi's mind until Sam leaned down to plant a kiss on her cheek and greet the little girl she held in her arms.
Bobbi stepped past Alfie and squeezed between him and Rosie to grab ahold of her arm.
"Ow! What's that for-"
"Rosie, how is it possible that Kade Matthews and Lennon Kayhill just showed up for Sam's wedding?"
The urgency in her voice only rose higher and her grip on Rosie's arm grew tighter with the appearance of two men behind Kade, one with a date on his arm, the other proudly solo, already loosening his tie.
"And the rest of Hey Farewell for that matter?"
Rosie only bothered to look over then. Sam was crouching down, his hand extended out to the small boy standing tall by Kade's leg.
"Oh hey! Kade and Lennon made it! And Noah and Will! Brilliant! Sam wasn't sure they were gonna be able to come."
Rosie took a step to go greet them, but Bobbi's arm held her tight in place.
"Rosie! Don't you dare move! Spill. Now!" Her words came out in a harsh whisper.
"Ow! Not so tight! Geez!"
"Rosie!"
"Sam saved Kade's life a few years ago when he fell into a pool while drunk in Vegas. They've stayed close ever since! Sam is Teddy's godfather! Now let go of my arm!"
Rosie's fingers worked against Bobbi's grip as she spoke and finally broke free, able to go and greet the newcomers herself. They looked her way as she approached and smiles of welcome appeared, along with wide arms ready for greeting.
Bobbi barely managed a wave and a hello to each of the passing party as they made their way into the sanctuary. The bridesmaid with the wide smile still had her eyes set on Theo, although the hope in her gaze seemed to have faded. Her companion had turned her attention onto Noah and she held his gaze as he followed Kade into the sanctuary.
Maureen gave one last look at the time and gathered her bridal party to meet in the center of the entryway. Her monologue of discussion was cut short when one last guest came hurrying into the mansion.
Bobbi's jaw lost all ability to keep itself closed as Wes Keats himself came panting into the foyer. Not even his tie was tied but the rest of his suit was perfect and ready to go.
"Hi! Sorry. I'm so late. Hey, girls."
He greeted the bridesmaids with a quick kiss on the cheek of each of them as they called out "Uncle Wes!" in greeting.
"My private jet had some minor technical difficulties. I got here as fast as I could."
"I completely understand. I'm just glad to see you made it in time." Maureen received her own hug as a greeting then set in to fix his tie. "Honor is on her way. Sam, go ahead and lead everyone out."
He gave her a quick nod after shaking Wes's hand and receiving a warm smile from the rock legend himself.
Bobbi barely found words until she stood one person behind Sam, perfectly situated in line with the rest of the band and Rosie.
"Wes Keats is here." She was finally able to mumble, words still a foreign concept to her muddled brain. "How the hell is Wes Keats here?"
Rosie heard her ramblings and leaned back in her direction as the bridesmaids made their way up the aisle, her words barely squeezing out of the corner of her mouth.
"He's Honor's uncle. He was the one who introduced Sam to Honor when Sam worked as a roadie on his tour a while back."
Bobbi shook her head, trying to clear her mind of its complete obliteration at the sudden onslaught of facts regarding Sam. She looked up to where he stood, facing the back door, waiting for his bride.
All questions flooding her mind regarding her long-term friend and bandmate flew from her mind when the string quartet started up its sweet melody and the doors of the sanctuary finally opened.
The congregation stood and turned to face the newly revealed bride. All eyes fell as Honor, a vision in white lace and tulle stepped through the door, her arm tightly wrapped around that of Wes Keats himself.
Bobbi's eyes fell instead to the face of her friend where he stood tall only a few feet away. His eyes saw nothing else other than the love of his life as she slowly approached. Even the spark of a drop of moisture could be seen at the corner of his eye as his smile widened with each passing second. His fingers drummed a quick beat against the back of his hands and his feet bounced him slightly up and down as Honor drew closer.
Bobbi caught one last look at his expression as he grabbed her hand and led her to stand in front of the waiting priest.
Bobbi bit the inside of her cheek as she began her battle against the sudden wave of tears she felt building up behind her own eyes. The look Sam held on his face was familiar. Bobbi saw it every minute of every single day.
Even in the hard times, during the countless hours she had found herself screaming and crying, the look somehow remained. She had only just seen it that morning, when Theo's eyes met hers, as they were dressed up and ready for a wedding that was not yet their own. A look that said that one day it would be. Someday.
