~Lorna's POV~

"Lorna dear, you have a phone call." The kind elderly voice of Baa-baa Cho, the woman who rescued and adopted me when I was very young, called from the living room.

My white tipped furry fox ears quirked in the direction the voice had come from, sticking upright. Normally they were a little bit droopy, since I was often lost in my own little world. Baa-baa Cho always called me a dreamer, and encouraged me to lose myself in my own little world. I sat upright and grimaced as my back popped, I'd been hunched over my work table for too long. I glanced down at the cute metallic rabbit I'd finished constructing and smiled warmly. It was finally done. I pressed the tip of its nose and it suddenly whirred to life. It's eyes glowed gold and it sprung to its feet, standing at attention.

I smiled, "alright Baron Von Bunny, your mission is to help Baa-baa Cho with whatever she needs."

The metallic bunny saluted me before springing off my work table and out the door. I heard Baa-baa Cho let out an exclamation of delight. "Oh my heavens! What is this adorable thing?"

A big grin spread across my face and I hurried out of my small room to see her face. Baa-baa Cho's wrinkled face was alight with childlike wonder as the metallic bunny hopped to her side and saluted her. She turned her pale blue eyes to me as Baron Von Bunny began to take over the laundry she'd been doing.

"I'm going to become one of those lazy old people that do nothing but read the newspaper and yell at children on their lawn if you keep spoiling me with all your inventions, young lady." She chided me softly before ushering me to the kitchen where the possibly only landline phone in a residential building left in existence, resided. "It's someone from the Hero Public Safety Commission. I bet they've finally recognized my girl's the most talented hero support specialist out there." Baa-baa Cho cheered for me quietly.

I felt anxiety well up inside of me. What? Why would they be calling me? I thought no one wanted me. After graduating from a not so well known high school's hero support class, I'd spent the last few years applying at every Hero Agency in existence, but no one wanted me. It was so discouraging and I'd been heavily considering giving up.

Nervously, I inched to the kitchen and picked up the landline. "H-hello?" I cursed myself as my voice shook, I was too nervous. There was no way they'd want someone like me who had zero confidence and even less social skills.

"Am I speaking with Miss Lorna Morioka?" A prim proper no nonsense voice sounded on the other end of the line.

"Speaking!" I squeaked as if I were back in school and it was time for attendance. I groaned inwardly.

There was a long pause. "Right." The disdain in their voice was quite evident and it didn't seem like they were even remotely trying to hide it. "You've applied to our offices on twenty different occasions within the past year."

Was that bad? I was just so worried they'd misplace my resume and I was a tad paranoid the receptionist kept throwing them away because she really didn't seem to like me. "...uh...yeah...but it shows I really want to work there..." I piped up anxiously.

"Right." They sighed. "Which brings me to my reason for calling."

"Are you hiring me as a hero support specialist?! Oh my goodness! I won't let you down! I have so many more support items I've been working on and I know you all said they were a bit too 'cute' so I tried to make them not as cu-."

"Miss Morioka, may I continue?" The voice drawled, annoyed with my excited rambling.

I shut my mouth and waited.

"We don't have any openings for a mediocre hero support specialist at this time." The voice continued.

Mediocre was unnecessary. My eyes began to sting a little. I could feel my ears starting to droop and saw Baa-baa Cho's smile start to slip. She'd been waiting nearby with a hopeful expression on her face.

"However, we do have a position available." The voice continued. "The Rabbit Hero: Mirko, seems to have an aversion to Hero Agencies, sidekicks, paperwork and the like yet whether she likes it or not she does need to have someone to manage her public appearances and I'm sure there are mountains of untouched paperwork that need to be handled. Since every other person whose resume we kept on file has been terminated by her, it's your lucky day."

...

Last choice... again, no not again...always. I was always the last choice.

...

"Oh."

"Considering you've shown up in the same exact outdated outfit every time you've dropped off your resume, I'll assume you're going to accept?" The voice asked with a sneer.

Baa-baa Cho couldn't work anymore and we'd never really had a lot of money. All of my clothes were practically antiques; they were all vintage clothes from when Baa-baa Cho was younger, she had been a seamstress but most people didn't hire seamstresses anymore. So she altered all of my clothes for me when we couldn't afford to buy new...which was almost always.

"...yes, I'll accept the position..." I tried my best to keep my voice from shaking.

"Wonderful." The voice dripped with sarcasm, "you start promptly at 7am tomorrow. I assume you don't have a cell phone I could text or access to a computer I could email so do you have a pen and paper handy for the address?" Another slap to the face...but they weren't wrong.

I reached across the counter for a small notepad and pen, "I'm ready."

They prattled off an address, "good luck." They said insincerely before hanging up.

Baa-baa Cho offered me an encouraging smile, "don't you fret, my lovely little Lorna. Now you've got your foot in the door, it'll be so much easier for you to get into their support department. They'd be fools not to recognize your talent. Why just look at how amazing that little fellow is." She pointed to Baron Von Bunny as he had moved on from laundry and was now doing dishes.

I nodded and forced myself to smile. "You're right."

Baa-baa Cho reached out a shaky hand and wiped away the single traitor tear that had fallen, "you're so very talented, don't let anyone tell you differently."

"Thanks Baa-baa Cho." I sniffled.

"Help me to the window, I'll practice yelling at kids playing in the alley." She grinned.

I giggled quietly and took her arm in mine to lead her to the window. She took a seat on the cushioned bench and picked up some garment she'd been working on for the past few days. It was a cute white dress with a chiffon overlay and a rounded lace collar. The decorative buttons on the front were little carrots and bunnies. It was the general theme of our life since Baa-baa Cho had a rabbit quirk, though it only gave her long grey rabbit ears that could hear things for miles. She caught me every time I'd try to sneak out of bed after bedtime to tinker at my work table when I was younger.

"Who's that for?" I asked her curiously as I looked at the beautiful dress she was sewing by hand.

"Only the sweetest little fox I know." Baa-baa Cho smiled.

My heart swelled and I wrapped her in a tight embrace. "Thanks Baa-baa Cho."

"Anything for you, my sweet girl." She kissed the top of my head before waving me away back to my tinkering where she knew I loved to lose myself.

I retreated to my small bedroom, it was technically a large closet but we worked with what we could afford. It was big enough to fit my twin sized bed, a single chest of drawers and my worktable. My room was a bit chaotic since I often went dumpster diving for scrap metal, tools and other useful things I could utilize in my inventions.

I looked at my few prized inventions sitting atop a shelf above my work table. There was a miniscule metallic ball that when thrown, would explode and a giant inflatable rabbit would emerge. It was amazing at breaking falls or bracing against impacts, but everyone said it was too cute and not practical enough. Next to it was a silver carrot that when the button on the center of the carrot was pressed the leaves would form a perfectly circular shield that was virtually indestructible, it could also double as an umbrella, but people complained that once again it was too cute and childish. Next to the carrot shield was a seemingly normal looking plush bunny, though when the button on its left foot was pressed it would expand and become very heavy. It was great for bringing down villains that tried to flee a scene. It would flatten them to the ground without harming them as it was soft and plush so it didn't hurt but heavy enough to restrict movement. Once again, it was too cute.

Now, I mostly built things to help Baa-baa Cho around the house or make upgrades to all of our very outdated appliances. Most of them turned out great, save for the toaster. That one had been a failure, it ended up launching toast through our ceiling and the ceiling of the apartment above us and clear out the rooftop. I never found the pieces of toast and began to wonder if I'd accidentally launched them into space. Our landlord had been furious. Luckily the neighbors found it more amusing than annoying so we got to avoid getting evicted.
