prologue

"now, what do you think you're doing?" the single father of two rhetorically asked, standing at the door frame of a room belonging to two mischievous babies. the light from the hallway cast a shadow into the room, the dim light shining on the tear stained face of his youngest, grasping onto the side of her crib as she stood with her head peaking over the railing. a cheeky smile appeared on her chubby face as soon as she caught sight of him.

"look at you.." then came babbling as the little girl was picked up from her crib after crying the whole neighbourhood awake. "can't get one nights sleep with you carrying on, little devil." she giggled, her little hand finding her dad's nose, playfully pinching. he sighed with a smile and sat in a chair in the corner of the room.

"it's a bloody miracle that your brother is such a deep sleeper, god knows i don't have the energy to deal with two screaming children.."

the alarm clock on the table read 2:47am. he shook his head, gently combing his fingers through his child's hair. the bright purple on the tips shining dully. it was always pondered why.. or shall i say how, that happened, not only to her but the son too. as far as genes were concerned there wasn't any logical way to explain it.

unfortunately for him, it wasn't unusual for him to be up at this time. "why can't you be like your brother and sleep all night? i'm starting to think you're doing this for attention now." he smiled, his eyes half-lidded.

it was true, while his son slept soundly all night almost every night, his little devil of a daughter went out of her way to wake up every single night and cry out to her physically and mentally exhausted father just to get a couple minutes of back scratches.

he loved his kids wholeheartedly, of course. but was it worth the sleep deprivation?

yes. yes it was. his kids are his pride and joy and he loved them more than anything in the world.

--------

success. she was asleep again, after maybe 20 minutes of humming. he could finally go back to bed even if just for another hour.

trudging back to his room, he flopped back down onto his bed and fell asleep instantly, luckily being able to have the rest of the night to sleep.

at 6, the siblings had their first days at school, Charu had no problems making friends with the other kids, being so bubbly and cheery, besides being cheeky, she really was a sweet kid. Chance took a while longer, being quiet and kind of shy around new people.

childhood flew by, the kids soon started high school at the age of 12. their grades were average for kids their age. friends were made and lost over the years. however no bond was stronger between their sibling bond, they were each others best friend. what they couldn't tell their dad or their friends, they could tell each other.

Charu started the first year beaming, but still full of nerves. the school they attended was pretty good for a public school. starting in grade 7 with a whole heap of other kids helped put the stress at ease. chance, his whole childhood, was a master at keeping emotion contained with his monotone voice and calm expression.

charu on the other hand was visibly nervous, her long ponytail swishing to the side as she looked over to her brother, knocking his head against hers as a sign of comfort and reassurance without words. she smiled.

the first year went by in a breeze, both had themselves plenty of friends. charu got influenced into fitness by her friends, and her grades were as good as ever. she even got herself a boyfriend at some point, but it didn't last as long as she would've hoped, as all 12 year old relationships go. she was as heartbroken, but got over it.

her bedroom at home was bright and colourful. the walls were covered in motivational quotes she printed and cut out from google, along with drawings she had done on weekends with the help of her dad, and fairy lights strewn around the window frame and curtains. it was your average tumblr girl bedroom, basically.

chance got more into sport, playing soccer and basketball with his buddies in his spare time. he was an intelligent and quiet young boy, but talked much more than he did in his younger years. unlike charu, he stayed single. not because no girls like him, but because he simply wasn't interested. he was responsible for helping charu get over her first breakup.

charu even decided to cut her hair shorter during the christmas break. once the hair was cut it only took about a day for the bright purple to grow right back at the ends. no one ever thought to question it, since people thought she just always dyed her hair purple.

she didn't think it was very abnormal since her brother was the same.

after christmas holidays, everyone started back at school again and not even 10 minutes into the start of the new school year, there was a collision.

"oh! sorry!"

her eyes met with black pac-man eyes for a brief second, but that second was enough to cause a slight jump in charu's chest. how... cute.

"i-it's okay.."

the conversation was over as fast as it began as she pale while girl that bumped into her quickly bolted away.
charu watched as the loose light grey hair flew behind the girl as she ran, and she clutched at the strap of her school bag. she surely hadn't seen her before. and what was that feeling that sat in her gut that almost made her want to throw up?

surely it couldn't be..
a little crush?

towards a girl????
that's never happened before.
