Chapter 1

It was a great wedding. The atmosphere on a warm summer evening at the Niagara-on-the-lake winery was especially romantic. Everywhere lanterns burned and flowers bloomed. Kate looked amazing. Her long curly hair went well with a light summer dress. Kate was wearing sandals and many anklets adorned her ankles. Even all her inappropriate tattoos, which she would remove and then get them done again looked very harmonious. And the most beautiful accessory on her naturally was a genuine smile all over her face. She was happy. She had been preparing for this day for a whole year. And the holiday was clearly a success.

Even Amanda was not as serious as usual. Amanda is the second bride and now my sister's official wife. Amanda's outfit was different from Kate's. In fact, it was completely the opposite. She was dressed in a discreet ivory jumpsuit. She had a watch on her wrist. It was a wedding watch. As soon as Amanda told my sister that she did not accept jewelry, Kate proposed to her and gave her a watch instead of a ring. Or it was Amanda who proposed. Everyone told this story in their own way, and Betsy no longer knew who proposed to whom. And does it matter?

- Kate, I like everything so much, you did so well. - Her sister smiled broadly.

- Thanks sweetheart, you know you still have time to change your mind and come on a trip with us. - Taking advantage of the moment, she again began to persuade Betsy to go on a wedding tour in Europe. - You know, your doctor can prescribe enough medicines so that we can comfortably spend the entire vacation.

- Kate, don't start. I really want to go to this camp. Besides, you and Amanda need to spend time together. I still have time to bore you before college. You know how I dislike all these drugs.

- Well, dear, I need to go to the guests, do as you know, you are already a grown-up girl. - My sister smiled at me and went to the guests.

It was pure truth. Betsy hated all the drugs she had to take. Betsy really had a stupid allergy. And she suffered from it from early childhood. Betsy could not stand large cities without a handful of medicines. And it was not a metaphor.

When Betsy was very young, grief struck her family. There was a fire in the house where they lived. Fortunately, firefighters managed to save Kate and Elizabeth, but their parents were not so lucky. Since Kate and Betsy had a big age difference, Kate was able to get custody of Betsy. She made great sacrifices for this. She dropped out of college and started working early. True, their tests did not end there. Almost immediately after the fire, Betsy began to suffocate in Toronto. Doctors did a bunch of tests and could not explain what it was. It was not just asthma, but something else. Betsy absolutely couldn't breathe in major cities. She vomited from the smell of cars, rubber, and even asphalt. So, Kate was advised to take her and quickly get away from the stone jungle to some remote village. Which, in fact, she did.

Fortunately, Kate's work was not tied to the metropolis at all. She was an artist. She was not just an artist, she was a talented artist. She did not grieve long that she would not be able to continue her studies in art. After all, now, as she often joked, the Internet has all the knowledge in the world. And it was not difficult for her to just take, collect all her canvases, brushes and paints and move to a small farm, away from the hustle and bustle and skyscrapers. Their farm was on the outskirts, the air around was as clean and fresh as possible. And it helped. Betsy stopped sneezing and panting. And very soon they cut the number of drugs in half.

Well, as it is usual in all novels, the quiet life of Kate and Betsy came to an end very soon. But believe me, it only got better for everyone.

This is the story of Amanda. One sunny morning, when Kate was creating her next masterpiece in her workshop, an arrogant businesswoman from a big city came to them. It so often happened that collectors came and bought paintings even before exhibitions. She burst into their lives with a hard thud of stiletto heels on the stone floor. And having planned to spend no more than twenty minutes buying paintings that day, she vowed today to spend the rest of her life with Kate.

After the wedding ceremony, Kate and Amanda wanted to go on a trip to Europe. And, of course, they have long persuaded Betsy to go with them. For Betsy, this would be just a nightmare, because she would have to constantly take allergy pills, which did not really help. And Betsy didn't want to spend half of her summer vacation covered in snot, with red eyes, and sneezing every five meters. Instead, Elizabeth signed up to volunteer at a language camp a long time ago. And the location of this camp was wonderful. It was located in the Banff National Park. A cleaner and fresher place could not be imagined. Moreover, for several months she had been corresponding with the guys who were supposed to come to learn the language. She had already made friends with some and was eager to see them live. She especially wanted to see Tim. They immediately found a common language and began to correspond in a separate chat. Tim had a great sense of humour. Tim was from Africa, from Tanzania, to be exact. And his English was very good. He won his place in a summer language camp and it was clear from the correspondence that Tim was a very smart guy. He, too, like Beth, was already literally counting the days until the start of the shift. For him, it was a real journey to another world. So many things he expected to see for the first time. For the first time, he was going to get on a plane, for the first time he was going to fly to another country, for the first time he was going to have foreign friends and unlimited access to the Internet. Yes Yes. The last point, oddly enough, pleased Tim the most. By correspondence, Betsy understood that there was a problem with the Internet in his village. Tim literally had to wait in line at the school library to get online.

Kate, Amanda, and Betsy were supposed to go to the Toronto airport tomorrow so that later Betsy could fly to Banff on her own, and the newlyweds could fly to Europe. Betsy had already packed her suitcase long ago, as had Amanda. But Kate ... she has not yet even chosen which suitcase she will take and what she is going to take with her for the journey. That was all she was. I was glad that there was still enough time before the trip to pack at least something. And today was the wedding day, so everyone danced, smiled, and ate a beautiful cake.
