"Why don't we just go back to the hotel. It's late. And cold." Gavin complained, trying to stay warm in his coat.
"Hey look! There's a cafe open." I smiled.
He paused. "Really?... a cafe? Open this late!?"
"Yeah." I shrugged. "Why not." I said then headed off towards the cozy little cafe. With twinkling lights framing the windows.
"Augh." He shook at the cold. "At least it's inside. Where it's warmer." He complained, staring at me.
I opened the door for him, quickly getting inside the cafe, that was in fact- warm.
🕯️☕️
"Ahhugh. So much better." He sighed, rubbing his hands together.
"I'll get you a hot chocolate or something." I said, walking past him.
The cafe was indeed small and cozy, soft lighting, cute little tables and the smell of both coffee and pastries. I'm not a big fan of coffee, but I'm so cold and hungry right now. Not to mention tired, so I don't need any caffeine.
"Oh hello." A waitress with dark curls spoke up, walking up to the counter from the back. While another woman with red hair was calmly sweeping the floor.
"Hey." I nodded.
"Welcome to The Cozy Bean Cafe. What would you like?" She smiled.
"Uh, two hot chocolates and- definitely some pastries. Mmm." My eyes drifting down towards them, making my mouth water at the sight. Rubbing my hands together in anticipation.
They looked so fresh and warm, not like they had been sat out for hours.
"Alright. That comes to $10.40" She smiled, ringing up the order.
Grabbing my wallet I pulled out a few bucks and put some im the tip jar. Surprised by how cheap this place was. She rang it up then went to make our hot chocolates and grab our pastries.
I turned around to see Gavin a bit warmer and glancing around the place. My eyes also drifted around, feeling comforted in this place. The only place open in the entire town.
Probably should have planned this out better. My fault- I know!
He already complained to me enough.
"Here's your order." The lady said, placing down the warm cups and yummy pastries.
"Thank you." I smiled, handing one of the cups to Gavin then carrying our food to a table.
"Mmmm. Finally- warmth." He smiled as he held the cup.
"Better?" I smirked as I took a sip of my hot chocolate. Comforted by the warm liquid.
"Mmhmm." He mumbled, taking a sip.
The cafe was quiet and still. Where is everyone in this town anyways? Why only one lonely cafe be open this late?... or- early?
Do I even want to know the time?
We slowly sipped our drinks, well- he downed his quickly. While I took a piece off of my pastry, then another, then another. Why is it so good!? Mmm.
I scarfed it down before even realizing it. But who could resist chocolaty goodness!?
"I'm so glad we found this place." I mumbled, wiping the chocolate from my fingers.
While we sat there, my eyes traveled around. Admiring the surroundings of the gently lights and the stunningly beautiful painting placed around.
My ears soothed by quiet noses of dishes being cleaned, the tidying away of mugs and gently sweeping of a broom.
Not to mention the most wonderful smells. If I could I'd stay here for hours. Relaxing and eating. Eating and relaxing.
But then the sounds of the little cafe were disrupted by the opening of the door and a sharp flow of freezing cold air.
A man with pitch black hair, stood tall in the entryway. Swiftly walking towards the counter.
His mere presence made my hair stand on edge.
Who is this man?
And- why do I feel this way?
The man's jaw was square, with a stern expression and a dark curl of hair.
Wearing a long dark coat with dark shoes to match. Clicking against the ground as he stepped.
The waitresses muttered to themselves then the red headed woman stepped up to the counter.
She smiled brightly at the man.
Why would she be so friendly towa-
"Bonjour, mon amour." The man spoke sweetly, his appearance softening as he gazed upon her.
She leaned over the counter to kiss him. "So what are you doing around here at this time?" She asked with a smile.
"I wanted to see you, my love." He spoke in a heavy French accent.
She blushed, looking down at the counter, fiddling with a cloth.
"Well, isn't that sweet."
"Am I not allowed to visit you at work, mon amour?" He asked, tilting his head with a small grin.
"No, I just- wasn't expecting you. Usually you're only out to come pick me up. So, this is a nice surprise." She smiled, tidying up around the counter.
"je ne pouvais pas rester loin de toi, ma chérie." He spoke, looking into each other's eyes, captivated.
Meanwhile I was so in tuned to their conversation, my neck hurt from looking back.
Is this what they mean when they say the bad guys are hot!? Cause damn. This guy was sending off warning signs but now- I can't help but feel enthralled by this stranger. Probably the accent. Definitely the accent.
"Oh mon Dieu." I whispered under my breath. Confused and flustered.
The man slightly turned his head, seeing the two of us sat there.
My head quickly turned away, trying not to attract attention. But the man stepped closer.
"Ah, so your French?" The man asked curiously with his thick accent.
His presence made me uncomfortable. Why?
Best to listen to your gut! That's what I've learned. But- I had to say something...
"Ahem- Well uh, kinda of, French Canadian. I know some French but I'm not that great at saying it. Out of practice I guess." I shrugged nervously, the man looming over. His dark eyes piercing through me.
"Ah, no worries. Not many French people around here." He said lightly, pulling up a chair to the table then sitting down.
"Mm, yeah." I nodded awkwardly. Why is he sitting with us!?
"So what brings you two down here? And- so late at night?" The man asked, glancing out the dark window.
"Well, we're kinda just visiting. I dunno." Gavin shrugged.
"Dunno? Ah, well. This town is a bit boring, but if you have got friends you can have some fun." The man spoke.
"Mm. Well at least there's a cafe. We were pretty surprised to see a cafe open this late." I said, nodding awkwardly. Someone please get me out of this situation. I preferred this place with less people. I prefer all places with less people! Well- excep- never mind.
"Yeah, most people would be asleep right now." Gavin said tiredly.
"There's a few night owls around, but for the most part it's quiet here." The man explained.
"I work at night and so does my wife." He motioned towards the cafe's counter.
"Oh, your wife works here?" He spoke up.
"Oui. Her names Cheyenne. The red head." The man gently smiled as he said her name, motioning towards the woman.
"Oh, nice. Uh- redheads are beautiful and she seems nice." I smiled, nervously fiddling with my hands.
Something about this guy was- off? I mean, he seems fine, but we're in a new place in the middle of the night. It's right to be a bit on edge. Right?
"Ah, merci." The man nodded.
"Her and Lani work the night shift here. Usually isn't to busy, just a few worn out people walking the streets."
"Mm. Sounds about right." I mumbled quietly.
"Yeah, he loves cafe's and bakery's so he was really excited to see one open this late." Gavin spoke up.
"Good thing you can come here any day or night then." The man smirked.
The guy had firm features and a strong smile, showing white teeth that almost shined.
"And perhaps I could teach you two some French." He said jokingly.
"That would be good. Accents are hot." Gavin spoke up. Making us both stare then chuckle at him.
"It's true." He defended.
"Hey, technically Americans have accents." I added.
"Eh, but it's not attractive. Most Americans sound as stupid as they are." He said jokingly.
"I- uh- damn. Okay then." I muttered.
"It's true. You know it." He added.
"Still rude." I said, smiling as I looked at him. Just a simple look or joke helped me feel so much more comfortable in this odd situation.
I mean- a man coming up to you to talk. Not that strange I guess. But... I just felt like there was something going on.
What if this town is like a cult!? Or something... something. Bad!?
"Well it's getting late, about time for me to lay down." I yawned, rubbing my face. Trying to hide my anxiety.
"But I think I'll get some more pastries before we leave. Hate for them to go to waste." I added, thinking of the tasty warm pastries just sitting there. Waiting to be eaten.
"Your not gonna eat all those. They'll go bad before you eat them all!"
"I take that as a bet." I said, standing up from the chair, my hands on the table.
He shook his head. "Don't make me tell your dentist."
I froze in place. "You-" I squinted at him.
While he just smirked. "Damn it." I quietly mumbled under my breath.
"Alright. Let's get going." He said, getting up from the table, grabbing the trash to throw out.
The man stood up too. "Well, nice to met the two of you. I hope you enjoy the town while you're here." He said in a friendly manner.
Maybe I misjudged him?
He held out his hand, I paused then shook his hand. Rough and strong. Sort of- I don't even know how to describe it. This man is just- different I guess?
Gavin shook the man's hand then we headed out of the cafe.
"Oh uh, just curious. You do have a name right?" Gavin asked sarcastically.
"Oui." The man smirked, skaking his head. "Sorry. I failed to introduce myself. My name is Andre." He spoke with his heavy accent, and his teeth shining.
"Nice to meet you." Gavin nodded then we headed towards the door.
The cold air rushing through our thin clothes. Maybe we should have worn more. It feels like Alaska or something. I'm not a big fan of the cold, but Gavin won't shut up about it.
"I was so worried that they'd ask us something personal or- find out. I hate that I feel that way." He complained, stressed out as usual and shaking.
"It's okay. Why don't we just go to the hotel. It's about time to get some sleep." I comforted, gently judging him with my arm. Keeping my hands in my jacket pockets as we walked to the car.
"Mm, yes please." He mumbled, teeth chittering.
The night had seemed to get darker. Or maybe it was just from being in the light.
There was an eerie feeling, walking towards your car in the dark of the night. The entire town dark, quiet and asleep...
What could be lurking in the shadows?
