Sniffing Out Clues
._.__.~Castiel~.__._.
Everything seemed to spiral out of proportion. First it was a witch, now it's a werewolf. How could any of this possibly add up?
Felicity began to examine the body. "This is Bailee's body. I can tell," I didn't bother to ask how. "She was killed by a werewolf at around sundown; the wolf must've been in the house when it turned."
It was at that moment we both realized what was going on.
"That must mean... Linda's the werewolf." She concluded.
"But that still doesn't answer the question behind the witchcraft. Why was Gerald performing spells? It doesn't make any sense."
"The warding symbols," She muttered. "That's why he used warding symbols. He was trying to protect those women from Linda!"
"Why were there X's on the photos then?"
"Well, he's a terrible Wiccan to be honest. Those symbols were a bit half-ass. Probably so much so that they didn't even work."
"Linda is a werewolf. Gerald found out and they got into an argument. Their fighting continued for a long while, until she stormed out. She came here, and it just so happens-"
"That last night was a full moon!" She finished.
"Precisely. It is beginning to add up now."
"Now we just need to find Linda. If I were a wanted werewolf, where would I hide?"
I suddenly had an epiphany. "Felicity, I believe I have a plan."
"Alright, let me hear it."
"We can track her scent with a search dog. A bloodhound, perhaps. Or a Bassett hound. Or a-"
"A beagle!"
We exchanged glances and were immediately on the same page. This plan would work, I was sure of it.
We flew to the pet store and went inside. Thankfully, the puppy was still there. We purchased her and returned to Bailee's home.
"We'll need to find something that belongs to Linda. Wait here while I look for something." Felicity began to search the house.
I held the puppy, who was restless. She kept squirming in my hold.
"Um... can you please not move?" I asked.
She only barked and continued squirming. Perhaps this wasn't such a good idea. I sighed lightly, the puppy doing the same.
I looked down at her. She seemed to copy whatever anyone else did. I held her up so we were at eye level. I tilted my head to the side, the puppy doing the same.
"Why do you mimic whatever anyone else does?" I asked.
She only yawned, her head drooping tiredly. I held her to my chest and scratched her behind the ear. She seemed to enjoy it. At least she stopped squirming.
She suddenly looked up at me and started licking my cheek. I tried to get her to stop, but I couldn't. Probably because a part of me didn't want to.
"Um... puppy, can you stop that?" I couldn't help but chuckle. She started licking my neck and I laughed. It was starting to... tickle.
She was practically on my shoulder, sniffing me all over. She started sniffing my ear and I cringed. It was seriously starting to tickle.
"Stop it!" I laughed. I tried to sound assertive, but it was impossible with this puppy. This puppy that copied. Mimicked. Echoed.
I held her out in front of me, tilting my head to the side again. She did the same. I tilted my head to the other side, and she copied. I smiled.
"I believe I shall call you... Echo. Because that is what you do. You echo everyone else's actions."
She only barked in response.
Felicity returned from upstairs with a T-shirt, presumably one that belonged to Linda.
"Found this in her suitcase! I'm willing to bet her scent is all over it!"
"Perfect. We can get Echo to follow the scent and lead us to the werewolf in question."
"Echo?" She repeated.
"Yes. I have chosen a name for her."
"Why Echo?"
"Because she echoes everyone's actions. I felt it would be appropriate. Do you like it?"
She smiled. "I love it. Alright, we're probably gonna need a collar and a leash. Wouldn't want little Echo to wander off." She held up her hand, palm up, and conjured a purple collar and matching purple leash. There was a tag on the collar with Echo engraved into it.
"Purple?" I asked.
"Yes, purple. It's her color."
"I highly doubt she has her own designated color."
She laughed. "Never mind. Let's just get this collar on her."
She got the collar around Echo's neck and clipped the leash to it.
"Okay, Echo, can you find someone for us? Just sniff this, and find her." She got Echo to sniff the shirt, and she started to sniff the air.
I put her down, holding the leash. Echo started sniffing the ground like a proper search dog. She lead us to the back door, and beyond that laid the woods. She started running down the hill, and I realized that it had started snowing.
"When did it snow?" I wondered.
"Does it matter? It's snowing!" Felicity laughed.
"I wonder if it is snowing at the bunker."
We continued down the hill, Echo's ears flopping up and down as she frolicked. It wasn't long before we found something. Or someone.
"Is that a body?" Felicity asked.
"I believe so. Perhaps it is Linda."
Echo rushed up to the body, sniffing her all over. She seemed to confirm that it was Linda. Felicity checked her pulse.
"She's still alive. But she's freezing. We should get her to the house."
"Felicity, why don't we just kill her right here? We have no silver, but my angel blade should work just as well."
She looked up at me. "Castiel, we don't even know if she's the werewolf. She could be human."
"Then what is she doing out here?"
"Maybe she was trying to get away from the wolf."
"You said that she and her husband were fighting over Linda hiding something. She could've been hiding the fact that she's a werewolf."
"She could've been hiding a lot of things."
"And at their house, you said there was a shrine of some sort, trying to protect those women from something."
"Castiel, why are you fighting me on this? I just think-"
"It doesn't matter! All of the evidence is piling up against this woman!"
She seemed genuinely hurt. "What, it doesn't matter what I think?"
I realized what I had said and immediately regretted it. "Felicity, that's not what I meant."
"It sure as hell sounds like it."
I sighed lightly, my breath slightly visible in the air. "I'm sorry. I just want this to be done so we can return to the bunker."
She nodded in understanding, but still looked hurt. Because of me. And it made me feel so bad. Terrible in fact. I never wanted to hurt her, and that's exactly what my words have done.
"Let's, um... let's get her to the house. We should at least question her."
I nodded. "Yes. We... should." I said nothing more, trying not to hurt her any more than I already have.
We carried her to the house, Echo's leash wrapped in my hand. Once we got her inside, we rested her on the couch in the living room.
Felicity didn't even make eye contact with me. "I'll see if I can find anything silver. Just in case she's the werewolf."
"Yes. You do that." I muttered.
She walked away rather abruptly. I looked down at Echo, who was playing with her leash. I knelt down and scratched behind her ear.
"I believe I have upset Felicity. You will never be upset with me, will you?"
She only rolled over on her side, her floppy ear covering her eye. I half smiled and gave her a belly rub, causing her leg to shake. I chuckled and continued to scratch until she started playing with my coat sleeve.
"You are a playful creature, aren't you?"
She tugged on my sleeve with her teeth, growling playfully. I began to pull back, and we were locked in a little game.
She began to shake her head wildly in an attempt to get my sleeve. And the worst part was; she was winning.
The sleeve was dragged past my hand by her teeth. She continued to pull on it until my arm was well out of the sleeve. I tried to keep the coat on, but it was no use. I ended up pulling on the coat as though we were playing a game I had come to learn by the name of "Tug-Of-War".
I kept pulling, but not with all my strength. I didn't want to hurt her. I pulled up slightly so her front paws left the ground. She started growling, trying with all her might to get the coat. It wasn't long before she let go.
I chuckled, putting my coat back on. "We should probably purchase items for you to chew on before you tear apart the wardrobe."
She just barked at me. That's all she did. Of course, dogs have a limited vocabulary.
Felicity finally returned with a small candlestick. "I found this. It says it's silver, but it's hard to tell when companies are telling the truth these days."
"Why would they lie?" I asked.
"Because," She approached me. "That's how you become president." She smirked.
I examined the candlestick. "It is silver. But... I just don't understand something."
"And what's that?"
"If Linda came from a family of werewolves, wouldn't that make her sister a werewolf as well?"
"I guess." We looked at each other.
"Then why would Linda eat her sister's heart if she doesn't have a human heart?"
"I... I don't know."
"Are you sure that was Bailee's body?"
"Positive," I raised one eyebrow. "Well... kinda. Sorta. We need to look at the body again."
We returned to the location of "Bailee's" body. Felicity examined it once more. She seemed utterly baffled.
"There's Bailee's energy here, but I'm starting to question whether or not it is Bailee."
"Who else could it be?"
"I... I just... I don't know."
Echo began to sniff the body. She growled, her fur standing on end.
"What is it?" Felicity asked her. "What is it, girl?"
"I don't think she'll answer you."
Echo started to bark at the body. She barked and whined and snarled.
"Well, clearly there's something wrong."
We suddenly heard Linda wake up in the den. We rushed there to find her looking around, mumbling, "Where is she? Where is she?"
"Where is who?" I asked.
She looked up at me. "Bailee. Where is she?"
"Bailee's dead." Felicity held up her candlestick slightly.
Linda shook her head. "That's not Bailee. That's Louise. Our sister. Her twin."
"Bailee has a twin," Felicity muttered. "That's why she had Bailee's energy."
"Do you know what happened?" I questioned.
"They're trying to kill me."
"Why?" Felicity asked.
"Because I'm human. Don't you understand? I come from a family of lycans and... shapeshifters."
"Shapeshifters?" Felicity and I spoke at once.
"My father was a shifter and my mother was a werewolf. I was adopted; I'm human. Louise is a shifter and Bailee's a lycan. And now they're going to kill me."
