Pure At Heart
She had wings.
It was so surreal.
Light blue wings with a span of about three feet.
And it was all because of the angel blood.
"Cas, explain to me how she has wings because she's been drinking angel blood." Dean murmured as she lay unconscious in the guest bedroom.
"The blood of an angel has traces of angelic grace. If a human were to ingest it over time, they would become something similar to an angel. On earth, they are known as fledglings. It is described in your lore."
"What are they called in heaven?" Sam asked.
Cas sighed. "Mephistopheles."
"What? I thought Mephistopheles had to do with hell?"
"No. The Mephistopheles are humans with angelic souls. Her soul is tainted with grace. She's not even human anymore." There was a slight catch in his throat.
"Cas, you okay?" Dean asked.
"No. I... I am worried about her. Her life is in danger, and it concerns me. I just want her to be safe. I don't understand it, but I... I care about her." Tears filled his eyes and threatened to spill over.
There was a pause as this all sank in. "Cas, we all care about her. We do. We're all worried. But you can't let that stop you. You can't let it end here. We can save her from this, I'm sure of it."
"Dean, there is no reversing what Django has done. Not only is the feat impossible, but this angel is fueled by hatred towards me in particular."
"Cas, what'd you do?"
"Django is a very powerful, very vengeful angel. And the fact that... he is determined to kill me, puts us at a serious disadvantage."
"Why's he got a beef with you? Was it the fall?"
"I would assume that's another reason, but no. Our paths crossed long before then. It involved me, him, and another angel named Josephine."
"What happened?"
Before he could explain, Felicity awoke, yelling in pain.
"Castiel!" She instinctively shouted.
He was by her side in a second. "Felicity, it's okay. Look at me." He placed his hand on her forehead, sweeping the hair from her eyes.
She looked up at him. "What's going on?"
"Felicity, just relax. What is the last thing you remember?"
"I was... telling you about... Django. What he did. What I did. Then... pain. Just pain."
"The blood. The angel blood. It transformed you. I'm afraid you are... no longer human."
She sucked in a deep breath. With a shaky voice, she asked, "What am I?"
He could barely even answer her. "You're half angel."
She shut her eyes, unable to look him in the eye without sobbing. She couldn't even speak; her throat was too tight and her eyes burned.
"I'm sorry." His voice broke.
"Is there any way that I can be human again?"
"I'm afraid not. It's... it's irreversible. If I could, I would. But I can't."
"What about the nightmares? Will they stop?"
"The only reason they will stop is because you can't sleep. Whatever is inside you is still there."
"It's in my head. It's still there, trying to get out."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I think we both know what must be done."
"What are you talking about?"
"I give it life. It took over my body because that's the only way it can survive. I know that now. Abigail explained it to me."
"Abigail?" Dean asked, finally finding his voice.
"That's the girl who was being tortured. Her name was Abigail. On August 16, 1992, she was shot and killed."
"What're you getting at?" Sam asked.
"That's when I was born. The exact moment she died was the moment I was born. This thing needs both of our life forces. So she took Abigail."
"Life force," Cas muttered to himself. "It needs a strong life force. The lives of two people."
"Cas, you okay?" Dean asked.
"It's the nameless demon."
"The what?"
"It's a demon with no name. It existed millions of years ago. Billions. Before earth was even created. And when God put mankind here, when he created this earth, the demon ravaged the whole planet. It lived off the souls of the innocent. That's how it survived. Until God found it."
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"It was banished. God condemned it to the deepest, darkest depths of Purgatory. Along with the Leviathans."
"Purgatory? As in... Purgatory?" Dean balked.
"Yes."
"How did it get out? It wasn't when you cracked open the joint, that was a few years ago. The day Felicity was born, we're talking back in the early '90s."
"I'm not sure. I thought it died along with the Leviathans, or possibly in Purgatory."
"Well, looks like it's still kicking."
"Yeah, in my head." Felicity muttered.
Cas turned to look at her. "Felicity, we will get this thing out of you. I promise. I will be damned if I have to see you... see you die."
"But what does the angel blood have to do with the demon? And why is Django involved? What the hell happened, Castiel?"
"Yeah, and who's Josephine?" Dean added.
"You mean you haven't told them?" Felicity gaped.
"You know?" He asked her.
"Django told me. Told me all about it. What you did to her. Castiel, tell me it's not true. Please tell me it was another lie."
He paused before answering. "It's true. All of it. What I did, and why I did it."
"Well, what the hell did you do?" Dean asked.
"Django and Josephine were angels in my garrison. They were both extremely powerful apart, but together they were omnipotent. They were known as the Dialis Twins. They were an unstoppable pair."
"Dialis?" Dean repeated.
"Yes. It's a word that comes from God himself. A certain language that he spoke. It means death."
"The Death Twins? Yeah, sounds charming."
"There reached a point when they became far too powerful. When God left, they sought to take control of heaven. The King and the Queen so to speak. The God and Goddess. But many angels were against the idea of having such tyrants rule heaven. Myself included. So I did... something terrible. Something I have lived to regret to this day."
"What did you do?" Dean asked.
He hesitated momentarily. "I... I burned them with holy fire. I thought I'd killed them both. It would appear that Django escaped somehow."
"So you killed Josephine? And you tried to kill Django?"
"It was a terrible decision. Not one I'm proud of."
"And now Django wants to kill you." Sam added.
"Do you think he's working with the demon?" Felicity asked.
"At this point, anything is possible." Cas answered.
"But why me? Why Abigail? It's not adding up."
"And what's with the wings? Why does she need to be a friggin human-angel hybrid?" Dean asked.
Felicity gaped at him. "The... a... wait, what?"
"Felicity... there's something on your back." Cas murmured.
Felicity slowly turned her head so she could see her wings. She saw them and jumped up, her wings flapping madly.
"Calm down, Felicity! Look at me!" Cas grabbed her by her shoulders and forced her to look him in the eye. "Calm down."
"Wings?" She practically whispered.
"I know. It's okay. They are not going to hurt you."
Her wings continued to twitch and flutter about uncontrollably. Cas smoothed his hands over them in an attempt to steady them.
"Just stay relaxed. Can you do that?"
She nodded in response.
"Try and move them. But don't try too hard."
She concentrated on the muscles in her back where the wings protruded. She focused all her energy on the wings, and slowly stretched them, moving them up and down and back and forth. It was a strange sensation, flapping her wings. But one she'd grow accustomed to.
"Castiel, can I fly?"
"With enough practice, you can do everything an angel can. Fly, heal, even smite with enough training."
"Do you think I can smite this demon?"
He sighed lightly. "To be honest, I don't know for sure. I've never seen a Mephistopheles, nor do I know its capabilities."
"A what?"
"Mephistopheles. It's what you're called."
"Try finding that on a keychain."
Cas titled his head to the side, and Felicity just shook her head to tell him to forget about it. She just continued to look over his shoulder. He soon noticed this and was interested.
"Felicity, what are you looking at?" He asked.
She just shook her head. "Nothing. I'm not looking at anything. Why?"
"Felicity. What do you see?"
She saw his wings. His big, beautiful black wings. They were five, maybe six feet long. They were rather unkempt, but nothing short of incredible.
"Your wings." She breathed.
He immediately folded them behind his back, hiding them from sight. He looked down at his feet shyly.
"I didn't think you would be able to... to see them."
"Castiel... they're beautiful."
He looked back up at her. "They... they are?"
She smiled slightly. "Of course they are. They're the most amazing things I've ever seen."
"They are nothing special. Not anymore. They have been ruined by the stolen grace inside me."
"What do you mean?"
"Felicity... they were once pure white."
"What do they look like now?" Dean asked.
Felicity turned to look at him. "Oh. You can't see them, that's right. They're black."
"Black wings? Because of his mojo?"
"Apparently," She looked back at Cas. "I don't care what your wings look like. You're still pure to me."
Cas sighed lightly. "I hardly believe that's true."
"But you are. You're pure where it counts. You're pure at heart. No matter what. I will always l-" She caught herself. "I will always care about you, Castiel. Cursed or not."
