Chapter Three
After the last class of the day finally ended, Geoff and Duncan speed walked out to the front of the school. They saw Courtney and Tom looking in a textbook and taking notes.
"Hey Princess."
"Ugh. Not you again. What do you want?"
"I was wondering if you want to go on a date with me tomorrow after school." This drew the attention of the other kids outside.
Courtney stood up. "Um, I don't even know you. We've only talked once, and you were being an immature jerk. I don't even know what your name is! So no, I will not go on a date with you." Her and Tom walked off.
"Dude! You got rejected bro!" Said Geoff.
"Dude! That's the first time I've ever been rejected."
"Wanna come over and drown your sorrow in video games?"
"Sure."
"Awesome!"
So Geoff and Duncan went over to Geoff's place. You would think that now Duncan hated Courtney, that he wanted revenge. But really, the rejection just made him like her even more. Now he was determined to get her to become his girlfriend.
The next morning, Courtney woke up at five, trying to see her Mom or Dad before they left. She saw a note on the table that said:
'Courtney- we had to leave early for an extra credit project at work, and we know that extra credit means extra money. So it's important! But tomorrow we will be home to say goodbye to you.'
Courtney's heart dropped. She never got to spend time with her parents. They were at work constantly. They thought work was the most important thing, because that's why they were so rich. But Courtney would much rather spend the day with her Mom or shoot hoops with her Dad then be rich. They were at work so much that they never had time to say goodbye when she went to school or goodnight when she went to sleep. They weren't there when she got home, so she had no one to ask how her day was. The most involved they were in her life was school. They always looked over her report card. If she didn't get A+'s in every single class, even electives, they would be disappointed. Well, Courtney never wanted to disappoint them, so she dedicated her entire life to extra credit and good grades. That's why her and Tom never had any fun, they just studied, studied and studied some more whenever they hung out. And to Courtney, that was worth seeing the proud smiles on her parent's faces. Basically, poor Courtney didn't get enough love. Her parents were both lawyers that took on as many extra projects and hours as possible, and Courtney wanted to do the same exact thing when she grew up.
Well back to the story, Courtney blinked back tears, took a shower, brushed her hair and teeth, ate breakfast then called Tom and asked him to come over and study. They didn't even talk to each other or help each other, it was just nice to have someone to hangout with. Tom was almost a male version of Courtney; he had the same situation with his parents, she was his only friend, he was obsessed with studying and doing extra credit work, and he wanted to be like his parents when he grew up and never wanted to disappoint them. Today was different then most days. Instead of going straight to studying, Tom sat down and actually talked to Courtney.
"What happened with Duncan yesterday was so weird." He said.
"I know! I can't believe he actually asked me out. I mean, I know I'm the best girl in the school, but he only talked to me once and I hit him in the face! I don't have time for boys anyway, and by looking at him once I can tell that he's not my type."
"Definitely not. Did you see his eyebrow ring? He look like a- ugh- a bad boy! But hey, now we can talk about boy problems together." Said Tom.
Courtney sighed.
"You know Tom, you wouldn't have boy problems if you would just ask Corey out."
"No! I won't! This is highschool! There's no time for boys! I'll find a boyfriend when I get out of college! Until then, school is all that matters! Besides, he's not gay."
"You don't know that! Maybe he just hasn't come out yet."
"Sure."
"I'm serious Tom!"
Then they studied till it was time for school.
