Autism Ask Meme

-How old were you when you found out you were autistic?

I haven't been officially diagnosed yet (I want to be though), but I was about 11 when my parents told me I most likely have Asperger's syndrome. (I don't like saying I have Asperger's syndrome, though, since the term kinda has a problematic history. Totally not hating on anyone who prefers the term, y'all are valid, it's just a personal thing.)

-Do you have any other autistic people in your family, or are you the only one?

My mom is also most likely on the spectrum, and it's entirely possible that my nephew and niece are both neurodivergent in some form.

-Do you have any comorbidities, or just autism?

I might have ADHD, but I'm less sure about that one.

-Are you LGBTQIA+?

Yep! I'm genderfluid, trixic, and omniromantic :D

-What do you wish more people knew about autism?

It's not a spectrum of "more autistic" and "less autistic". There are a mixture of traits that can accompany autism, and different autistic people have different traits. Just because someone is "higher-functioning" or can pass better as a neurodivergent person, it doesn't make them "less autistic".

-Have you ever been in a relationship?

No, unfortunately ;-;

-Do you find it hard to make friends?

Not really, I've always been fairly social. I think I'm more just worried about keeping friends, since some people can be really rude about autism.

-If you have any, what are your special interests?

As of right now, mine are Inanimate Insanity and Five Nights at Freddy's. (Particularly EthGoesBOOM)

-What was your first special interest?

The earliest one I remembered having was probably dinosaurs, when I was a little kid. I just loved everything that had to do with dinosaurs.

-What are your most common stims?

Pacing, flapping my hands/shaking my fists, talking to myself, vocal stims, rocking

-If you could give any advice to your younger self, what would it be?

You ARE normal. You are not broken. You don't need fixing. You're just different from a lot of people, and there's nothing wrong with that. Try to embrace who you are.

-Do you headcanon any characters as autistic? If you want, tell us why you headcanon them as autistic.

I know practically everybody in the fandom's already said this, but Fan from Inanimate Insanity is definitely autistic. He has a lot of autistic traits (special interest, lack of social awareness, adverse to change, likes patterns, etc.) and his story especially struck a chord with me as an autistic person. I could really relate to him.

-Tell us an autistic person you really look up to.

Temple Grandin, a scientist/animal behaviorist. If you don't know who she is, I highly suggest you watch the movie made about her life. She really is amazing.

-Are you currently in school?

I'm in high school!

-Have you ever received any accommodations for your autism in either school or work?

I did this course with a small group of other kids in elementary school, and it's entirely possible that it had to do with my autism and I just never realized it, but other than that, I don't think so.

-Do you have any autistic friends?

I'm not sure if I have any autistic friends irl, but I know I have some autistic online friends!

-Do you own any stim toys? Which one is your favorite?

I have two chew necklaces and a thingy you can hold in your hand and change the shape of. (Not sure what it's called.) My favorite would probably be my cyan chew necklace.

-Do you find it easier to get along with other autistic people?

Maybe a little bit, but not by a large amount.

-What kinds of things are sensory hell for you?

Foods that are too greasy, getting grease on my skin, those ear-shattering speakers they have outside at my school, too many people at my house, most denim products

-What kinds of things are good sensory wise?

Soft, smooth clothing, electric fans, anything that chews good, my BFDI Woody plush

-How open are you usually when it comes to being autistic?

Usually, I'm open about it once I've determined I can trust you with that information.

-Would you say you're proud to be autistic?

It took me a while, but yeah, I definitely am.

-What's the longest you've ever had a special interest for?

The first time I had a special interest in FNaF, I had it for YEARS.

-Do you have meltdowns?

Very rarely, and I usually try to contain them to the best of my ability.

-What about shutdowns?

I think I've only had a complete shutdown once.

-Do you avoid eye contact?

Not really, I guess.

-Do you have any vocal stims or echolalia?

I do have vocal stims, and I used to have echolalia when I was a kid. (I stopped because people kept commenting on it and I felt like I wasn't supposed to be doing it)

-How long do your special interests usually last for?

Anywhere from a week to a few months to a year or two.

-Are your friends and/or family accepting of your autism?

For the most part, yeah.

-Favorite canon autistic character?

I don't think it was ever explicitly confirmed, but I'm pretty sure Abed Nadir from Community is supposed to be autistic.

-Do you have a comfort item? If you feel comfortable with it, show it to us.

I don't think so.

-What are your safe foods?

I'm not sure if I have safe/not safe foods.

-Foods you are sensitive to (maybe because of bad texture, for instance?)

Beans. I just cannot stand baked beans.

-Do you enjoy hugs, or are they sensory hell?

I do like hugs! I've been told I actually give really tight hugs, lol.

-Have you ever used a weighted blanket?

I sleep with one!

-Do you have routines that you have to follow? What's in your routine?

I definitely used to have very rigid routines, but I'm not so sure anymore, especially since school takes up most of my week now.

-Do you enjoy holidays, or are they sensory hell to you?

I do enjoy holidays, but after a while I'll have to spend some time alone in my room so I can have some social cooldown.

-How good are you at detecting sarcasm?

I'm decent, although sometimes I have a hard time with it.

-What's the most comfortable/sensory-friendly outfit you own?

Most of my pajamas.

-Do you collect anything related to your special interest?

I probably would, but I get too embarrassed to ask my parents to buy me merch most of the time, lol.

-If you date people, would you prefer to date other autistic people?

I've never dated before, but I want to, and yeah, probably.

-Tell us something about your special interest.

I'm gonna skip this one because I have absolutely no idea what I should put here lol

-If you could have any item related to your special interest, what would it be?

One of the II Pride shirts.

-Who are your favorite autistic bloggers? Say something nice about them.

I'm not really a blog person.

-Favorite autistic celebrity?

I don't think I really have one, but I'll tell you that it's NOT Elongated Muskrat. Screw that guy.

-Are you generally a loud or quiet person?

I'm kind of both, I have a history of volume control problems lol

-Do you happy flap?

Yep!

-What is your favorite special interest related item you own?

Right now, it's my Woody plush, which I bought back when BFDI was one of my special interests.

-What's something you find hard to do because of autism?

Breaking habits.

-Free question. Ask anything you want! Any topic at all!
