30: The Truth
Y/n
"Shawn, if you make another Grey's Anatomy reference, I will end this phone call." I huff and feel my heart skip a beat when his laugh booms through my phone.
"Look, I can't help it, ok?" He breathes and I almost scold him before his voice comes through again.
"Anyway, y/n, I was gonna ask you something."
Ok...my heart beat just picked up.
"O-Okay?" I say warily and he chuckles.
"Don't worry, weirdo, it's nothing bad."
"Just tell me already before I pass out!"
"I was gonna ask you if you wanted to go to the park this afternoon." He finally explains and I exhale in relief.
"Psh, duh! It's gonna be nice seeing you again." I say softly and he chuckles.
"You saw me yesterday, dummy." He mentions and I feel my cheeks burn.
"Since when was it illegal to miss my best friend?" I ask, offended.
"Well when it's you saying it, it's totally legal." He says and I shake my head.
"I really wanna throw my phone now." I say and he bursts into a fit of laughter once again.
Asshole.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't help it."
"Apparently you never can!" I exclaim.
"Well, here's the plan, you're in charge of the drinks and I'll be in charge of the snacks. You can't be picky though! I'm just gonna throw everything that's in the pantry into my backpack." He explains and I nod.
He can't see you, dumbass.
"Okie dokie, ma'am." I tease and a brief image of him shaking his head crosses my mind.
"You need mental help." He says and I scoff.
"Mental help? Nah, all I need is a life supply of pizza hut's boneless wings and I'm chillin'."
"
What am I gonna do with you, y/l/n?" He sighs and I shrug my shoulders.
Still can't see you, idiot!!
"So, what time we goin'?" I ask and he hums in thought.
"Is 5 ok?" He asks and I smile.
"Magnifique!" I exclaim before making a kissing sound.
"I'm now going to end this phone call before I cringe any harder." He says and I laugh.
"You love me, bitch!" I exclaim and I take the honor of ending the phone call.
Great, now is when I freak out about what I'm gonna wear.
It's 4:13 so I think I should just start already. I huff and hop off my bed making my way to my bathroom to analyze how bad the damage is in the mirror.
Yup, there's a lot to fix here.
"Y/n!" I hear beside me and the voice startles me.
"Yes, sweet brother of mine?" I look down and gently pat my younger brother's head.
"What are you doing?" He says and I smile at his missing tooth.
"I'm getting ready to meet up with Shawn, you wanna help me pick out my outfit?" I ask and he jumps in excitement.
"Yeah! Yeah!"
"Alright buddy, hop up on my bed." I point and close the door behind me before making my way to my closet.
Ok, I have a lot of clothes. Too much to where I can't even pick 2 options.
Curse my indecisive self!
"Hey little bro, I was gonna give you 2 options, but I can't decide so come on over here and pick whatever you'd like." I say and I hear his little footsteps run to me.
"Ok, close your eyes and hold out your finger." I instruct after picking him up and he giggles before doing as I said.
"Now poke."
I smile and he pokes a pair of black leggings making me mentally sigh in relief. I hate jeans, ok?
"Ok, now a shirt." I say and he pokes a shirt I wish he didn't poke.
It's a stupid crop top.
"Mkay buddy, how much you want?" I ask as I set him down and he opens his eyes with a confused look.
"Money, how much you want?" I ask and he giggles again.
"Can I have candy instead?" He asks with a sparkle in his eyes.
I guess my mom raised him right.
"Ok, I have a bag full of candy right over there, pick whatever you'd like, but you can only pick 5." I say and he shrugs before rushing to the bag of cavities.
"I'm gonna shower now, bud." I say before turning around to leave.
"Y/n?" His small voice calls and I face him again.
"Yeah?"
"Uhm...c-can I go with you?" He asks and I feel my heart skip a beat.
What the hell am I supposed to say?
"Let's call Shawn and see what he says, yeah?" I ask and he smiles while nodding his head eagerly.
We jump on my bed and I quickly begin to dial.
"Let me guess, you can't decide what to wear." He answers and I roll my eyes.
"Ok, you're currently on speaker so careful with your words because my little bro is all ears." I say and he gasps.
"Hey little dude!" He exclaims and I smile.
Shawn really enjoys talking to my brother if you didn't already notice.
"Hi, Shawn!" My brother replies and I gesture towards him to ask his question.
"So what's up, kiddo?" Shawn asks.
"I-I wanted to ask i-if I could uhm, if I could go with you and y/n." He nervously played with his fingers and I grab his hand making him look at me, his smile reappearing when I wink at him.
"Are you kidding me, little dude?! Hell yeah you can!" Shawn chuckles and I smile.
I knew he was gonna say yes.
"Really?! Heck yeah!" My brother fist pumps the air and I laugh.
"Your sister better be ready or I'll pick you up and leave your sister." Shawn says and I laugh sarcastically.
"I'm hanging up now!" I sing before clicking the end button.
This is gonna be fun.
****
I take a last look in the mirror before grabbing my phone and quickly making my way down the stairs.
"Ready, bro?" I ask and he smiles.
"Yup!"
Just as I was about to let my parents know I would be leaving soon, I hear a honk outside.
"Mom, Dad! Were leaving now!" I say and my mom replies.
"Ok! Be careful! Take good care of your brother!"
"Love you, bye!" I say before stepping outside.
"Shawn!" My brother screams before running into Shawn's open arms
"Hey, kiddo!" He says and gives him a tight hug before setting him down.
"You two lovebirds done here or should I leave you guys to-" I try to say but Shawn's strong embrace stops me.
"I missed you, weirdo." He says and I hug him tight when his hot breath against my neck makes me shiver.
"I missed you, too." I say and we pull away to see my brother tapping his foot.
"Looks like little man here wants to get going." I say and Shawn quickly picks him up making him giggle.
"You know the rules, bro." Shawn says before setting him in the backseat.
"Seatbelt on at all times and rock on to every song I know." He says and I shake my head with a smile.
This kid is too smart, I tell you.
Shawn grins before high-fiving him and closing the door. I watch his every move as he makes his way to me and I smile when he smiles.
"What'd you bring, y/l/n?" He asks and I hold out the things in my hands.
"One big blanket to sit on, a shit ton of drinks, and a pack of gum." I list down and he furrows his eyebrows.
"What's the gum for, weirdo?" He asks and I smirk.
"You never know, I might meet my prince charming and I don't want my breath smelling like caprisun." I shrug and he shakes his head before putting a hand to my forehead.
"Are you sure you're feeling alright?" He teases and I swat his hand away.
"As Rihanna once said, shut up and drive." I say before hopping into the passenger seat.
"Yes, sir." He salutes and I laugh.
To the park we go.
****
"This should be a good spot, right?" Shawn says as he analyzes the picnic area.
"It's actually kinda perfect." I nod and he smiles.
"Coolio, I'm starving so I call dibs on the Ritz box." He says and I almost fall over when my brother zooms past me.
"Ritz?! I love those cookies!!" He claps and Shawn chuckles.
"We can share buddy, but I refuse to share with your sister. She's a thief." He playfully glares at me and I wink back at him.
"Only the best, babe."
"Ok, should we set up now?" Shawn asks and I groan.
"But- but I hate doing stuff!" I whine and he rolls his eyes.
"C'mon dingus, if we both do it, we can get to the relaxing part faster." He nods and I huff.
"Fine."
I grab two corners of the blanket and throw the other corners to Shawn. We lay it out and his hand gestures for me to sit first. I bow my head with a smile while lifting my imaginary dress before sitting.
"We picked a good spot." I smile while patting beside me for Shawn to sit.
"Yes, yes we did." He nods and I turn around to see my brother petting a dog that came by.
"Come on over here bud!" I call to him and he pats the dog once more before quickly making his way over to us.
"Who wants some juice?" I ask and of course my brother raises his hand eagerly.
"Me! Me!"
"Alright, settle down, little dude. I'll have a water, weirdo." Shawn smiles and I throw him a cold water before poking the caprisun straw into the plastic opening.
"Ok, so, when are you gonna stop calling me weirdo?" I ask as I sip on some juice myself.
"Hm, let me think. How about never?" Shawn chuckles and I shake my head.
As my brother starts a conversation with Shawn, I can't help but notice how much I love them. I don't know what my life would be like without these two goofballs, but I think it'd most likely be boring. I honestly wish I could tell Shawn the truth. How he's always on my mind no matter what time of day it is. I used to only see him as a friend and even as a brother figure, but for some odd reason, my feelings towards him have taken a complete 360 and I think I can confirm that as I feel a warmness in my heart when I hear them laugh.
"This guy is such a comedian, y/n!" Shawn grins and pokes my brother making him laugh.
"I know, he gets it from me." I smirk and they both roll their eyes.
Rude.
"Looks like those Ritz crackers and that juice is kicking in." I chuckle as my brother yawns and rubs his eyes.
"No, I'm not tired. I swear." He says and Shawn and I look at each other with an 'ok, sure' look.
"Alright buddy, come here." I say and he crawls into my lap before snuggling his head into my shoulder.
"Don't leave me here, y/n." He croaks and I refrain from laughing.
"Don't you worry, buddy, Shawn will make sure to remind me." I tease and Shawn lightly nudges my side.
"Shut up, you're gonna scare him." He scolds and I look down again to see him knocked out.
"You sure?" I smirk and Shawn makes an impressed face.
"You're such a mom." He says and I roll my eyes.
"Ew, no, i can't be a mother. Children scare me." I say and shiver at the thought of becoming a parent.
"I love kids, I think I'd hang out with a group of kids before a group of people my age." He says making me laugh.
"Yeah, then there's me, I'd just rather not hang out with people at all." I smile and he laughs.
A comfortable silence falls upon us and we both just enjoy the view. I take a quick glance at my best friend's face and I smile. He's so perfect. From the curly, brown locks on his hair to his amazing fashion. The best thing about him is...well...him! The way he thinks, the way he sees the world, how generous and kind he is, and just him. Everything about him is just amazing and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
"Whatcha thinkin' about?" He says and I look at him like I've lost my brain.
"Sorry, what?" I ask and he chuckles.
"Nevermind."
Why are you so amazing?
"What do you mean?" He asks and I gasp before stuttering.
"I-I uhm... I didn't mean that!" I exclaim before covering my face.
Good job, y/n, you thought out loud.
"Chill out! It's ok!" He says and I look over to see he's gotten closer.
I open my mouth to try and say something but nothing comes out. I huff in frustration at how shy this asshole makes me, but before I could bring the words to my mouth, his words leave me speechless yet again.
"I should be asking you that question, too." He smiles and I look at him as if he's lost his head.
"W-What?" I say barely above a whisper.
"That's why I asked to hang out today, y/n." He says and I feel my world stop.
"I wanted to tell you how I've been feeling about us lately. I used to see you as just a friend and someone who I just held very dear to me, but now i-it's just completely different. I can never get you off my mind and to be frank, it drives me insane. I hate that I can't hold you or kiss you or touch you." He says and I rest my hand on his.
This is it...
"Shawn, I-I can't begin to explain how amazing that makes me feel at the moment. Everything you just said is the exact same thing I've been feeling for a while now. There isn't one day that you're not on my mind. From the moment I wake up to before I go to sleep. Why do you think I missed you so much even when I had seen you just the night before? I didn't know whether you felt the same or not and I-I was-" I stop and I swallow the lump in my throat before wiping a tear that had fallen freely.
"You were afraid that I would leave." He finishes my sentence and I look up at him, not bothering to wipe my tears any longer.
"Babydoll, I would never leave your side. The only place for me is beside my girl. You'd have to do something really fucked up for me to leave you and even then, being the fool I am, I would still be there." He finishes and I give him the biggest smile I've ever shown.
I gently set my brother down on the blanket and before I could wipe my tears I jumped into Shawn's arms. My tears turned into tears of joy as his arms wrapped around my waist, holding me closer than ever before.
"I love you, Shawn." I croak and I gasp when he flips us so that now he's hovering over me.
"I love you too, weirdo." He smiles and my hands softly glide through his hair.
Our eyes never leave each other and I smile when his finger tucks a piece of my hair behind my ear.
"Considering I just spilled the beans, I think I have the right to finally kiss those beautiful lips of yours." He says and his thumb messes with my bottom lip making me giggle like a school girl.
"Shut up." I say and my head spins when I feels his lips on mine.
My lips felt paralyzed but they soon began to move with his. I can't help the goofy smile that appears when he pulls away and my hands cover my face. That cover doesn't last long when I burst into a fit of laughter.
"S-Stop!! No! S-Shawn!" I scream in between laughter and he finally stops before giving me a small kiss again.
We then put my brother in between us and we watch the sky. I feel my heart skip a beat when I look over to him and see him wink making a deep blush come to my face.
I am just damn happy.
