Chapter XII: A Fatal Attraction

It had been five days since (L/N) had first set foot in the Watchtower. Following his discussion with The Watcher, he had been made to fill out a small stack of forms, mostly forms that stated in one way or another that from the moment of signing until midnight on his final day, he would be interning for The Watcher Agency. This meant any property or casualty damage he may cause during his internship would be accepted as the responsibility of The Watcher Agency, however, bodily harm he sustained would still be seen as the responsibility of UA Highschool. Something like this was common for hero course students. It was seen as an equal acceptance of risk. The hero agency would take responsibility for damages caused by their interns while UA would remain responsible for the safety of their students.

After the paperwork came introductions. The Watcher Agency had exactly 67 individuals under its employ spanning across the three major divisions and included subdivisions, as well as five licensed heroes. The Watcher was the founder and CEO of the agency. Despite being a Pro Hero, it was rare for him to personally work in the field. Instead, he remained in The Watchtower where he constantly kept watch over the city through the use of his quirk. If a situation arose, one of the agency's four sidekicks were dispatched to the scene.

[Hero: Cloudburst. Quirk: Weather. As the name suggests, her quirk allows her to control the weather. That means anything from heat waves to hailstorms, but she can only manipulate a localized area of at most one-hundred squared acres. Having worked for The Watcher for almost seven years, she is the senior most sidekick and the agency's number two.]

[Hero: Cortex. Quirk: Hard Drive. His brain can store a ridiculous amount of data which he can access at any time with infallible recall. He mostly helps support the other sidekicks with information, so he doesn't get a lot of press, but there's no one better suited for reconnaissance than him.]

[Hero: Lionheart. Quirk: Courage. Lionheart is as strong as she is brave. When at her best, she's strong enough to lift ten tons and practically indestructible. But if her confidence falters, she starts to lose power until she reverts to an average human.]

[Hero: Djinn. Quirk: Wish. Her reality warping powers allow her to grant up to three wishes a day, so long as they meet certain requirements. For instance, the person whose wish she grants must genuinely want that wish to come true. Also, any physical items that become wished into existence will disappear in twenty-four hours, and anything wished out of existence will return in the same amount of time. Djinn cannot grant her own wishes.]

Aside from learning how a hero agency was ran (L/N) didn't do much. He went on daily patrols with one of the sidekicks, only half listening as they explained the purpose of patrols, the extent of their authority, and the process of catching criminals. In the office, he was bunted around the different divisions so he could learn a little more of the specifics when it came to dealing with incoming requests and dealing with the media.

The Watcher's question echoed around his head once more as he was filing away a stack of papers. What is it he wanted and why? What type of question was that? What he wanted was to be able to control his quirk. As for the why, well, there was a certain tetraplegic who could answer that for him. It was such a pointless question, and that was what bothered him so much. The Watcher didn't seem like the type to ask rhetorical questions, so why ask when the answer was glaringly obvious? Did he think (L/N) had been lying? Or did his quirk give him some insight into (L/N)'s mind? What was it he had said? That he understood (L/N) better than (L/N) understood himself? What was that supposed to mean? Shaking his head (L/N) pushed the thought from his mind and resumed his filing.

On his second to last day at the agency a request from the Public Safety Committee came into the office requesting security at a large travelling fairground that would be visiting Kanagawa Prefecture that afternoon. The whole event was meant to be a fundraiser to help those who had lost loved ones to the Hero Killer's recent crusade across Japan. The Uwabami agency had also been contacted and would be sending a group of heroes as well, hoping to deter anyone from thinking about stealing the funds. The Watcher dispatched Cloudburst, Lionheart, and (L/N) to go to the event while he kept an eye out from The Watchtower.

The fairground had only just opened thirty minutes ago and already hundreds, if not thousands of people had flocked to the attraction. A sea of people shouting overtop one another and more screams from atop rollercoasters. The whole thing was the embodiment of the word migraine. Fortunately, UA had allowed (L/N) to keep the special earplugs that had been made for him to use during the Sports Festival.

"Cloudburst, dear, is that you?" A woman's voice called from near one of the concession tents.

The three turned to see Uwabami surrounded by a pack of rabid fans that separated her from her two interns. The Pro Hero shooed her fans to the side as Cloudburst, Lionheart, and (L/N) approached. The three exchanged respectful bows of greeting before continuing their conversation.

"And Lionheart, too. Well, isn't this just turning out to be a lovely little reunion. When was the last time I saw you two? Yokosuka, wasn't it?"

Cloudburst nodded. "In Mikasa Park, that's right."

"Well, it's been too long." Uwabami said, giving both the heroes another bow. "Will our ever-observant oracle be joining us today?"

"I'm afraid not." Lionheart said. "But he'll be keeping an eye on things from The Watchtower."

"Well," Uwabami huffed, "someone ought to remind him that he needs to get out every now and then. Give his admirers some attention." She flipped her hair over her shoulder and blew a playful kiss at the crowd. "And who is this handsome young man you've brought with you?"

"Right, forgive me." Cloudburst said quickly. "This is (F/N) (L/N), The Watcher Agency's intern from UA."

"Another intern, hmm? Perhaps you know these two lovely ladies."

With a crook of her finger, Yaoyorozu and Kendo stepped forward to join them. Yaoyorzu nervously half raised her hand in greeting, but other than that the three exchanged no signs of knowing each other. Meanwhile, Uwabami had rested her left arm across her body and sat her right elbow atop her left hand, her index finger placed on the tip of her chin as she carefully examined the three students.

"You know Mr. (L/N)," she said thoughtfully, "you look quite dashing with these two ladies beside you. Very debonair. Have you ever thought about a modelling career? Tell me darling, what color are your eyes?"

(L/N)'s already stonelike expression grew even harder, his furrowing brow accompanied by a tightening of the corners of his mouth.

"Why don't we save that conversation for later." Lionheart suggested. "We're here to work."

"Right, of course." Uwabami nodded, redirecting her attention. "Well, this seems to have worked out quite nicely. There are three interns and three of us. Why don't we partner up so each of the students is accompanied by a pro?"

"Sounds like a plan." Lionheart agreed. "That means you'll have give up one of yours."

"Yes, Yaoyorozu dear, why don't you go with Lionheart. Young Miss Kendo can stay with me."

"Which means you and I are a team." Cloudburst smiled cheerfully at (L/N).

"We'll go ahead and patrol in a counterclockwise rotation, maintaining an equal distance between us to ensure maximum efficiency." Uwabami directed. "The Ferris wheel is at the center of the fairground for reference. Remember, we're only here to handle any major issues that arise. Small affairs should be left to fairground security and law enforcement, though hopefully our presence will act as a deterrent against any potential incidents."

With the agreement to radio in in the event of any criminal activity, the three groups split up, heading for different sections of the fairground. Cloudburst and (L/N) ended up going south, the bumper cars acting as the beginning of their patrol route. Every now and then someone would approach them, asking for Cloudburst's autograph, or for a photograph with her, to which she always happily obliged while (L/N) waited a good distance away.

It was extremely dull work, not that (L/N) was complaining. If there was one thing he could agree with the heroes on, it was that the quiet was a blessing that rarely lasted, but alas, the peace was interrupted by some second-rate thug looking to make a quick buck. Frankly, the preceding four hours without incident was miraculous.

The sound of an alarm pierced the joyous sounds of the fairgrounds as the thief burst through the doors of the administration building where the income from the event had been deposited. A handful of security guards were already in pursuit of the perpetrator when the pros jumped into action. He was running past the Ferris wheel when Lionheart rushed in followed closely by Yaoyorozu, blocking his path forward. The man came to a sudden halt, his panicked eyes darting around for a new escape route; but Uwabami and Kendo were preventing him from turning right, while Cloudburst and (L/N) cut off his escape to the left, and behind him security was quickly catching up.

Ripping off the black leather gloves he wore, the man ran over to the base of the Ferris wheel and placed his palms upon the main supports. The metal slowly turned red before the form distorted causing the large attraction to tilt ominously. Screams came from the cabins as the wheel gave a sudden lurch and began to fall as the support melted through completely.

The security guards quickly backed away while the surrounding crowd shrieked and ran for cover as the wheel leaned further and further to the side. It was just at its tipping point when a strong gust of wind caught the center shaft and suspended it for just a second longer.

"Lionheart!" Cloudburst shouted over the high winds.

The courageous hero ran up towards the base of the seventy-meter/two-hundred-thirty-foot Ferris wheel and planted herself in a solid front stance, bracing the bottom of the frame on her shoulders. A golden orange aura seemed to envelope her body, flaming for a few seconds before it seemed to be absorbed by her muscles. Bearing her teeth in a ferocious grin, the Ferris wheel slowly began to right itself as she straightened her legs. Kendo stood at the entrance ramp of the wheel, using her quirk to grab people from the bottom carts while Cloudburst and (L/N) flew to the top cabins, sending people down to Uwabami and Yaoyorozu on air funnels or platforms of hard light.

Using the chaos to his advantage, the thief slipped away, running past Lionheart whilst making his escape. The courageous hero scowled at the man as he fled, flashing him a dangerous look. If she had just been a bit faster, she could have taken him out before any of this happened. Her knees suddenly threatened to buckle, and the wheel groaned and started to sink again.

The sudden movement was accompanied by more screams, one ringing louder than the rest. Panicked shrieks came from the crowd on the ground as people pointed up at the sky. The most recent tremor had unbalanced one of the passengers in the topmost cabin as she reached out for Cloudburst's hand, and now she was falling. Just seconds from hitting the ground, the woman found herself safely in a sphere of cushioned light that gently set her on the ground. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.

Lionheart's confidence had been shaken, and now her strength was leaving her. It was the worst possible feedback loop. The more confidence she lost the further the wheel fell, and the further the wheel fell the less confidence she had. The sound of one of the bolted anchors snapping free of its concrete base took the last of her strength. It caused a chain reaction.

First, without Lionheart supporting the main brace, the wheel once again began to topple. The weight of it pulled against the cable supports, ripping the anchors from the ground and sending the heavy steel cables flying. One of them hit Cloudburst and knocked her unconscious. It was over. Lionheart was drained and Cloudburst was falling to her death. Even if both the pros were still in commission, the wheel was at too much of an angle now to stop.

Three hundred passengers and hundreds more people on the ground that would be crushed by the wheel, including Lionheart, Uwabami, Kendo, and Yaoyorozu. The shadow of the sixty-ton wheel descended upon a man and his wife. They turned their backs to it and hugged their daughter in a feeble attempt to shield her from being crushed. They hoped against hope that their bodies might be enough to save her. It was all they could do. It was all anyone could do. Hope. Hope and pray. Pray for a miracle, because that's the only thing that could save them.

A miracle is exactly what they got.
