10.
Even before his truck came to a stop, Sol knew something was wrong. It didn't take a genius to realise that his cabin in the woods – in the middle of pretty much nowhere – had been broken into.
Stepping out of the truck, his nose twitched. Angling his face up, he sniffed the air.
Humans.
A group of them.
Sol only had a split second to decide to either go after the humans who had broken into his home or stay behind to check the damages and try to figure out what they had taken – if they had taken something.
"Stay here!" He barked at the wolf before he took off running into the woods in front of his house. Sol didn't need a map to navigate through the woods; he knew this place like he knew the back of his hand. But he had to be mindful about the noise that he made while trekking through the woods, trusting his enhanced sense of smell to take him straight to the humans who dared try to rob him.
It didn't seem like a coincidence, breaking into a small cabin in the middle of the woods.
His home was completely isolated from any civilisation. Hell, it took him nearly an hour to drive into the closest human town for supplies and his part-time job.
Sol's cabin wasn't exactly something that a regular human would stumble upon and then spontaneously decided to break into.
They had to have been looking for his cabin.
But why?
Well, Sol hoped that he would find out soon. He was beginning to run out of patience, not like he had much to start off with anyway.
Coming to a quiet standstill, Sol attempted to hide his large frame behind a rather thick, old tree trunk as he observed the group of humans whom seemed to be lost. The task was rather tedious since Sol was a large man, but these beings were humans and luckily, they hadn't sensed him.
Now, if they were werewolves, they would have sensed Sol following them a long time ago. That would have been a whole different story.
Peeking out from behind the large tree trunk, Sol couldn't understand what the humans were doing. But they were pretty loud so it seemed that he would find out soon enough.
There were seven of them, all of them dressed in what seemed to be white radioactive body suits. One of them held what appeared to be an iPad in his hands while the others gathered around him.
It would be disappointing if they had broken into his cabin for his wi-fi password so they could continue to watch YouTube cat videos on their iPad.
Sol snorted quietly at the thought. It was not the time for jokes.
"It's not beeping as loud anymore." One of the humans spoke. Sol could tell that the human was stood on the right of the one holding the electronic gadget but couldn't exactly pinpoint which of three he or she was due to the radioactive body suits. The sound was quite muffled and if it were not for his heightened senses due to the werewolf genes, Sol wouldn't have been able to tell that the human had said anything in the first place.
His ears perked up at the sound.
The iPad was beeping?
"She's not here. She must have left."
"Can you find out where she went?"
"What do you think we're here for?"
"Why is the tracker not working?"
Tracker? That thing was a tracker?
"Something seems to be blocking the wavelength."
"Are you sure this is where we dropped her off?"
"Positive!" The main human, the one who seemed to be engrossed to the screen of the electronic contraption, clearly getting frustrated from all the questions that he was facing from his peers.
Sol would be too if he was in his position.
"We need to find her quick."
"Well, that's why we're here for." The human's voice dripped with sarcasm.
One of them shook his head. "We wouldn't have to be here if the job had been done correctly in the first place."
"Shut up!"
The humans continued to argue among themselves, none of them becoming any wiser to the fact that they had someone listening in on their conversation, a werewolf to be specific...an Alpha to be even more specific.
From what Sol could gather, they were talking about his wolf; the very one that he had waiting for him in his truck. Sol was glad now that he had driven up to spend some time with Clark. If not, the humans would have surely ambushed them and then Sol would have most likely have gotten blood in his cabin.
Blood was a nightmare to clean.
Sol hadn't realised it before, but this was just about the spot that he had found the female wolf. He had no doubt that those humans were talking about her.
Since she was still in wolf form, Sol didn't wasn't able to question her properly. The burning question that he had in his mind, was why was she still in her wolf form? He wanted to know why she hadn't been able to shift back and perhaps, these humans could give him the answer.
After they did, he would have to think about where he would dispose of the bodies after he killed them.
"I'm not able to get an exact location. The signal is a bit fuzzy."
"That's what happens when you're in the middle of the forest."
"I think we should head back to that cabin."
"The owners could get back any minute and we can't afford to be seen."
Sol internally laughed at that. Too late.
"Why do you even think she was at the cabin?"
"The owners must have taken her in for a bit."
"We could just go back and wait for them to get home. We could question them."
"What's wrong with you? What don't you understand when I say that we can't afford to be seen."
"Who says that they'll live to tell the tale?" One of the humans huffed, clearly not happy about practically being scolded like a child in front of everyone.
The human in the middle just shook his head. "That would just raise suspicions."
"And we can't afford to raise suspicions?" That same human mocked.
"Exactly."
It seemed like Sol wouldn't be able to get any valuable information from this group of humans because just as he sensed her coming up from behind him, Sol turned around as quick as he could on the ball of his feet and shot out an arm to catch her before she gave away both of their identities.
Just a little more time and Sol was sure that he would get the information that he wanted.
But it seemed that the female wolf had anticipated his interception because just as she was about to go barrelling into him, she dodged to the right and ran past the tree, heading straight towards the humans.
Sol froze momentarily, not really sure what to do. He hoped that she ran past them so quick that they wouldn't see her.
How wrong he was.
There the humans were, most probably talking about her, desperate to find her and she had just run straight into their open arms.
Sol clenched his jaw in anger as the wolf ran straight into the middle of the group of humans and pounced on the one in the middle, viciously snatching the iPad from his hands and throwing it to the side. The gadget fell onto some rocks. There was no doubt that it was ruined.
The humans were caught off guard for a few minutes, but after the wolf had successfully tore off two of their heads, they sprang into action too.
She fought a third one. The wolf was so determined to kill the human in front of her that she didn't notice the other two that were swiftly approaching her from behind.
The mutt was absolutely careless.
Sol busted out from behind the tree then.
Before, he had sensed that she had needed this, that she needed to be the ones to take them down. But now, she was in danger and he wasn't going to stand around and watch her get ambushed and potentially kidnapped by a bunch of humans while he was hiding behind a tree.
That wasn't what an Alpha would do.
There would be no survivors that day. Well, no human survivors.
He grinned wolfishly before jumping into action.
Howling dangerously, Sol grabbed the attention of the two humans that had attempted to ambush the she-wolf from behind. She barely spared him a look, but Sol had captured the attention of all the humans. Well, except for the one that the she-wolf was ferociously clawing it.
Sol had no time to question her actions before he leaped into the air and transitioned into his Alpha wolf. The change was quick and smooth, and he was sure that the humans were in awe of his beast, but he didn't care. All he cared about was keeping the other wolf alive.
She was his pack, even if he refused to admit it.
The little bugger had wormed her way into his heart in the short amount of time that they had spent together. Plus, Sol was mad that they had raided his cabin and left in such a hideous tip. His immaculate self would have surely died of a cardiac arrest if he was human.
But luckily, he wasn't. He was all wolf.
And the humans in front of him were about to learn that the hard way.
There weren't many humans, only four remaining, five if he counted the one that the she-wolf was dealing with.
Within seconds, Sol had slit the throat of the two humans who had attempted to jump the other wolf with his claws, making sure to pierce their jugulars. They both fell to the floor on their knees, their eyes wild with fear as they clutched at the throats, the blood seeping through their fingers. They begged for mercy, blood now waterfalling from their mouths as well, but it was too late.
Sol barely had any time to marvel at the way he had killed off the humans so quickly before he felt a weight on his back.
The human who had jumped him wasn't too heavy, and Sol threw him off rather quickly.
The human rolled across the forest clearing in his originally white, but now muddy and matted with blood, radioactive suit. Sol charged at him, determined to kill him for staining his fur.
Stamping his feet on his chest and stomach, he crushed the humans body with his weight. Just to be on the safe side, he made sure to claw at his face and neck too.
His snout turned up at the pungent smell that seemed to resound from his prey seconds before he died. Sol didn't need to look down at his crotch to know that the human had wet himself.
Before Sol could turn around for the remaining humans, he heard a yelp followed by a strangled howl.
The she-wolf.
Sol was by her side in less than a second. Blood was seeping out from her side as she lay on the ground, whining softly. Looking up, Sol watched as the two humans ran from the bloodbath.
One of them seemed to be fine, covered in blood but seemingly scratch free as he supported the other human, most likely carrying most of its weight. It was clear that the second human was severely injured and probably wouldn't survive the night if he or she didn't get immediate medical attention.
The longer Sol waited, the further they ran.
He was sure that he would be able to catch them pretty soon, and rid them of their lives even sooner, but he had a dying wolf on his hands.
Sol only had a split second to make his decision. Either go after the two remaining humans that had managed to survive, take a few hostages to find out what their plan was and why they were after the female wolf in the first place, or stay behind and save the said wolf from bleeding to death.
Shifting back into his human form, Sol chose the latter.
