Chapter Twenty-Three

Jenny had now brushed off last weeks case as just another case. It wasn't the best idea to get attached to the people you meet on cases.

Sam was sitting across from her, reading a news article with a concentrated frown, Jenny playing Tetris on her phone, but occasionally shoving a french fry or her burger into her mouth. Dean had wandered off into the bar, possibly gambling the little money they had.

"Jenny, look at this—" Before Sam could hand the news article to the brunette, Dean walked out with a grin, carrying a handful of cash and cackling. The two seated Hunters turned to Dean, waving the money.

"Don't waste it all on pie." Jenny smiled sarcastically as Dean's dropped, sitting down.

"I was thinking a fancy ring." He grinned as Sam frowned at the two.

"You know, we could get real jobs once in a while." Sam suggested as Jenny shrugged.

"Hunting's our day job. And the pay is shit." Dean shoved the money away as Jenny nodded in agreement.

"Plus, can't exactly get a job when we're only in a town for a few days." She mentioned, and Sam dropped his head.

"Yeah, but hustling pool? Credit card scams? It's not the most honest thing in the world."

"Look, Sam. This life we have... We gotta live with what we got." Jenny smiled half-heartedly as Sam nodded, turning the news article over. "Did you find something?"

"Maybe. Oasis Plains, Oklahoma - not far from here. A gas company employee, Dustin Burwash, supposedly died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob." Jenny and Dean furrowed their brows in confusion.

"Cruella-what?" Jenny asked as Sam frowned at her.

"Cruetzfeldt-Jakob. Human mad-cow disease." Jenny hummed as Dean nodded.

"Mad cow... Wasn't that in Oprah?" Dean asked, turning to Jenny.

"I wouldn't know. You make me sit through Scooby-Doo re-runs." Dean looked away for a moment before shrugging in agreement, turning back to his brother. "Wait..."

"You watch Oprah?" Jenny and Sam asked in unison, frowning at Dean. He flushed in embarrassment, staying quiet.

"So this guy eats a bad burger. Why is it our kind of thing?" Dean asked, changing the subject as Jenny shook her head in amusement. She went to take another bite of her burger, pausing before slowly setting it down back on the plate.

"Mad cow disease causes massive brain degeneration. It takes months, even years, for the damage to appear. But this guy, Dustin? Sounds like his brain disintegrated in about an hour. Maybe less." Sam explained as Dean hummed.

"Okay... That does sound weird."

"Yeah. Now, it could be a disease. Or it could be somethin' much nastier." Sam folded the news article as Jenny shoved more fries into her mouth before standing up.

The three walked to the Impala, Dean sighing loudly. "Work, work, work. I never get time to spend my money." He complained as the trio got into the car, Jenny shaking her head.

"You would spend it all on food." She pointed out as Sam nodded in agreement, Dean frowning at the two.

"That is not true. I'd spend it on... uh..." Dean trailed off as he couldn't think of anything, the two snicker at him. "Shut up."

Jenny, Sam and Dean rolled up to a gas station in Oklahoma. The woman of the three looked out the window, then turned back to the brothers.

"Hey, why don't you guys go talk to Travis? I'm going to try and dig up what I can find on Dustin." Dean and Sam shrugged, starting to get out.

"Jenny grabbed her laptop from off of the floor, quickly doing her best to find what she could on mad cow man.

So far, she came up with nothing. A simple construction worker, who happened to die tragically. Jenny leaned back in her seat, shutting her laptop. Waiting for Sam and Dean to come back.

When the two finally had, Jenny looked up, shrugging as she inhaled deeply. "Well? Where we off to?"

The Hunting trio had come up to the crime scene in a growing neighborhood, Jenny looking around to see if she could spit anything out of the ordinary. So far, modern homes.

Jenny pulled out her flashlight as she stepped under the police tape. She slowly approached the sinkhole, aiming her flashlight down in it. "Well. That doesn't look ominous at all."

"So, what are we thinking then? Some creature chewed on this guys brain?" Dean asked as Sam shook his head, looking into the sink hole, as well.

"There would be an entry wound. It worked from the inside." He explained as Jenny looked away from the hole and back up at them.

Dean looked back down at the hole and hummed. "Looks like there's only room for one." He picked through his pocket, pulling out a coin.

"You do know there are three of us, right?" Jenny frowned as Dean turned to her, putting the coin away. He then put his hand into a fist, clasping it with his other.

"Guys, we have no idea whats down there." Sam gestured to the sinkhole as Jenny shrugged, getting ready to beat Dean in the children's game.

"Chicken." Dean chuckled at his brother, who glared at him, also balling up his fist.

As the three raised their hands to play rock, paper, scissors, Sam stepped towards the hole. "I'm going."

"I said I'd go." Dean frowned as Sam shook his head.

"I'm going." The two started arguing, Jenny sneaking behind Sam to tie the rope around her waist. She handed the rope to Dean, who then frowned at her.

"You two. Always bickering." She complained, walking to the hole. "Don't drop me."

Dean and Sam looked at one another as Jenny lowered herself into the hole, nearly causing Dean to fall down with her.

"Hey a worm!" Her voice echoed, and she picked up the worm from the ground. Dean and Sam shared a glance, looking in through the hole. He beamed the flashlight in her face as she held up a worm, smiling. Sam couldn't help but chuckle, watching as she set set it down gently.

Jenny looked around the hole again, frowning at what it was: Just a hole. There was nothing in there except for a bunch of dead beetles. Jenny picked one up, frowning.

"Okay..." Jenny looked around at all the dead beetles, counting to herself before looking up. "You guys can let me up now." Jenny said with uncertainty, shoving the beetle in her pocket and climbed out of the hole. She slipped against the wall, gripping the grass and grunted, struggling.

"A little help—" She laughed, Dean and Sam grabbing her arms. "Thanks. Slippery."

"What did you find?" Sam asked as she dug through her pocket, pulling out the beetle.

The three got back to the car as Jenny examined the beetle. "It's a beetle in the ground, Jen." Dean complained as she looked up at the two.

"I know that. But there were no holes telling me how they got in the hole." Sam blew out, shrugging.

"You know, some beetles do eat meat. Now, it's usually dead meat, but..." Sam trailed off, looking at his brother.

"How many did you find down there?" Dean asked as Jenny kept examining the beetle.

"Uh... Ten. But you'd need way more than ten to eat a guy." Jenny frowned as she folded the beetle into a napkin.

"Well, maybe there were more that ran off." Sam suggested, Dean starting to drive down the neighborhood. "We need more information on the area, the neighborhood. Whether something like this has ever happened before."

Dean pulled up to a house with red balloons, an Open House sign out in the yard. "I know a good place to start." I'm kinda hungry for a little barbeque, how 'bout you?" Dean turned to his brother with a smile as Jenny looked out at the house. "What, we can't talk to the locals?"

"And the free food has nothing to do with it?" Sam asked, giving Dean a knowing look. He scoffed, shaking his head.

"Of course not. I'm a professional." Jenny chuckled, shaking her head.

"I'm not. Free food is my calling." She got out of the car, walking along next to Dean, Sam following up next to them.

"Growing up in a place like this would scare me." Dean muttered as Jenny looked at him, confused. "Well, manicured lawns, "How was your day, honey?" I'd blow my brains out." Jenny laughed as she shook her head.

"There's nothing wrong with normal." Sam commented as Jenny turned to him.

"There's a lot wrong with normal, Samurai. Normal means something will go wrong. And that's why we're here." Dean pointed to Jenny with a smile.

"See? She gets it."

"Maybe because I've never lived a normal life." Jenny walked up to the house with the two brothers, knocking in the door.

A few seconds later, a man answered, smiling. "Welcome."

"This the barbecue?" Jenny asked with a smile as he nodded.

"Yeah, not the best weather, but... I'm Larry Pike, the developer here. And you are... ?" Jenny shook the guys hand, gesturing to Dean.

"I'm Jennifer. This is Dean, and his brother, Sam." The man nodded, looking between the three.

"Are you guys looking for a home?" He asked pointedly towards Jenny and Dean, whose eyes widened, looking at one another.

"Oh— uh.. We— uh.." Jenny laughed nervously as Dean stammered over his words, Sam looking away for a moment to hold back a knowing smirk.

Sam cleared his throat. "They are just looking. I'm here for moral support." Sam smiled as Jenny stomped on his foot. Larry nodded inquisitively, looking at Dean and Jenny, who smiled at him with rosy cheeks.

Larry looked at Sam, raising a brow. He shrugged, smiling. "Well, come on in." Larry stepped aside as the three walked in.

"You said you uh— you are the developer?" Jenny asked, her voice shaky for a moment.

"Yep. Eighteen months ago, I was walking this valley with my survey team. There was nothing here but scrub brush and squirrels. And you know what, we built such a nice place to live that I actually bought into it myself. This is our house. We're the first family in Oasis Plains." The four walked over to a woman, who smiled at them. "This is my wife, Joanie."

Joanie shook Jenny's hand, the two sharing a smile. "Hi, nice to meet you." Jenny returned to introduction, Larry turning to face the Hunters.

"Tell them how much you love the place, honey. And lie if you have to because I need to sell some houses." He joked, the five laughing. Jenny's phone suddenly rang, and she stepped away for a moment.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Jenny."

"Bobby! Holy shit I thought you were dead. Why haven't you been answering my calls? Or at least a text?" Jenny looked back at Sam and Dean, the older Winchester turning the her. She waved him off as the group walked outside.

"Yeah, sorry about that. I've been chasing down a uh... werewolf. The last few months." Jenny fell silent, pressing her lips together.

"Right. Yeah that makes more sense. But you haven't called in like... Two months. I was getting worried." She laughed softly, pacing back and forth. "Look uh... I'm on a case right now with Dean and Sam... I'm sorry."

"No no, it's okay, Jenny. Just checking in. Stay safe, kiddo." There was a smile in Bobby's voice, one that Jenny returned.

"I'll text you soon, Bobby. Bye." She hung up, turning around to see Dean walking towards her without Sam.

"Who was that?" He asked, gesturing to Jenny's phone with his head.

"Oh, Bobby. He was on a case for a few months. Just checking in. Where's Sam?" Jenny looked around as Dean cleared his throat, Jenny shutting her mouth as Larry walked back in.

"Alright. You two ready for a tour?" Larry smiled as Dean and Jenny nodded quickly. "Okay, follow me."

Jenny and Dean stepped out of the way, Larry walking between them before the two shared very nervous looks. Jenny looked around, snagging a water bottle and started chugging it as she followed Larry and Dean upstairs.

"So, how long have you two been together?" Larry asked as Jenny choked, water spewing out her nose. She turned around, slapping a hand onto the wall as she coughed, Dean patting her back hesitantly.

"Uh... She gets anxiety." Dean lied, smiling at Larry. "People make her nervous. Questions uh.. Scare her sometimes."

"Oh. Apologies." Larry frowned as Jenny shook her head.

"Nooo it's not your fa—" She coughed loudly, inhaling sharply. "It's not your fault. Can we continue?" She smiled, wiping her nose as Dean gave her a look, and she held her smile.

"Uh... Sure."
